Epson R1800 on the ropes

While I'm not too hopeful, maybe somebody here has an idea that will keep my R1800 from the trash heap.

Yesterday while running a cleaning cycle the cyan cartridge unexpectedly went straight to showing a solid red out of ink indicator. These are a fairly new set of MIS refillable cartridges so I initially thought the chip was bad, but when I swapped in an OEM cyan cartridge that previously had not even shown an ink low indicator it too was showing ink out.

Now here's the interesting part...

If I remove all the carts and power off, when I power back on the light for the cyan cartridge comes on right away, but the printer goes through it's whole startup routine before it indicates there's anything wrong in all the other slots. I'm taking this to mean this doesn't have anything to do with the presence, let alone status of the cyan cart, but I don't have a clue what if anything will fix it. I think it goes without saying that any kind of repair wouldn't be economical unless I can do it myself. Anyone have a clue what might be going on here?
