Brother Brother MFC 5840CN

Brother 5840CN error 46

Got an email from Brother that there was a firmware update for my MFC-5840CN. When I went through install step by step, machine locked up and displayed "Unable to Init" - in maintenance mode it gives "Machine Error46" - Support says take it to a service center on your dime - not our problem. Any tips? - I am willing to try whatever to keep from taking it in if possible. I will likely go with a non-Brother if I can't bring this one back online.
if they sent you the email to do the update i'd get on the phone to them and kick up a stink. i assume you've tried a memory clear.

Here is the answer to your MFC code 46 – happy printing !

Machine Error 46 – Purged Ink Box Full MFC620CN/420CN/410CN/210C and FAX2440C

The machine counts all purge (cleaning) operations in order to prevent the internal ink absorber box from overflowing with purged ink. An “initial purge”, for example, advances the purge counter by 187 + 420 = 607. When the purge counter approaches 6400, an internal "Machine Error 46" is generated. Further purge operations are prohibited, and therefore the printer becomes unuseable.

When an internal Machine Error 46 is generated, the user will see an “Unable to Clean” external message and will be unable to use the printer. The “Unable to Clean” external message can relate to many different internal error codes however.

The user can establish the internal Machine Error Code as follows: pull the mains cable out of the machine (power off), hold down the Menu/Set key, re-insert the mains cable into the machine (power on). The internal Machine Error Code will be displayed.

If there is a Machine Error 46, it is necessary to dismantle the printer, replace the ink absorber box (or possibly break the ink absorber box open and clean its absorbent sponges under a tap), re-assemble the printer and reset the purge counter to zero.

Resetting purge counter MFC620CN/420CN/410CN/210C and FAX2440C

1) Enter machine maintenance mode (on MFC210C all four photo/copy/fax/scan lights flash in maintenance mode). Care is needed in maintenance mode, otherwise critical settings may be inadvertently corrupted.

FAX models with numerical keypads: Press the Menu/Set, *, 2, 8, 6 and 4 keys within two seconds. (if you fail to complete the correct key sequence within two seconds, press the Stop key to try again).

Other (non-FAX) models: Press the Menu/Set and Black Start keys. Next press the “up arrow” key four times to enter the maintenance mode).

2) Press the 8 then 0 keys in the initial stage of the maintenance mode to call up the machine's log information list (function code 80).

3) Press the Black Start key several times to scroll through the log information list to reach the purge counter. The purge counter is the 25th item in the list.

4) Press the 2, 7, 8, and 3 keys in this order to reset the purge count to zero.

5) Press the Stop/Exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.

6) Press the 9 key twice to return to the standby state.

Hi Trickidicky or others pro of this 5840CN,

Since you seems to be a pro on this printer MFC5840CN, do you have a trick to turn down the automatic head cleaning process. It runs almost always when I plug my printer and as you know it consume my ink tank.

Thanks for your answer,

Hi tricky dicky,

Just saw your instructions on how to solve the error 46 on an MFC-5840CN. I'm trying to follow the instructions on resetting the purge counter, but it doesn't seem to be working. Just wanted to check that your instructions do relate to this model, as it isn't one of the models you mention after 'purged ink box full'.

When I press menu/set and *,2,8,6,4 I get '4800 BPS NO DET' on the screen or 'procedure RX TE'. Am I doing something wrong?

Many thanks for your help.

On MFC-5840, you can start with step 2. 8 and 0 calls direct the log information list.

Fantastic! Thanks for maintaining this info all these years. It took me just five minutes of searching the net to find your info, and five more minutes to tap the buttons on my printer, and I am back in service! It couldn't be simpler!

PS: Now I'm assuming that at some point in the future, the purge tray will in fact overfill with ink? Or should the ink evaporate with time? I guess if that ever happens I can just crack the printer open and wash/dry the reservoir sponge myself?

At any rate, I'm back in business, and I don't need to buy a new printer today!

Thanks for the tip, I was able to reset my printer which was
showing Error 46.

Do you have instructions on how to open and clean or replace
the purge tray / waste ink reservoir? I cannot find any details
on how to do it either in Brother's manuals or other search
in google.

I have a DCP-585CW. Anyone know how to get to the absorber box please i.e. how to remove the top cover?

Brother and their agents refuse to release this info because of 'Health & Safety issues' or in reality 'pay us to do the job'.

Success! Took me a couple of tries to hit the actual purge counter - it's the one that says Purge, duh - but it worked like a charm.

Hello again. The error on my 5840CN was not a error 46 but a 50. I have tried resetting purge and flush to zeros multiple times, then resetting all the codes to zero, as was suggested, but still no go. I really need my printer to work! Please help!!!

Wowww, your instructions were easy and on point. It took me like 2 minutes to reset my Brother MFC-5840CN printer. I started from step 1A because it's the model with the numerical keypad and it fixed my printer. Thank you so much for the posting.
