Ink cartridges not installed correctly

I was given an Epson workforce 840 printer that has not been used for some time. When I turned it on, it said the ink cartridges needed to be replaced, I was trying to just get it set up at the time so I removed the ink cartridges and put them back in. Then it said the ink cartridges were not installed correctly. I purchased new cartridges and am getting the same error message. I am sure the ink jets are likely clogged, but I cannot go any further to try to clean them. Any suggestions would be appreciated. It is only specifying the black and cyan cartridges. The other 2 seem to be ok. Thank you.
