LCD blacked out

The LCD on my printer is displaying vertical black bars. The printer seems to be booting but will not respond after the initial start up. This has happened since last week, we had a storm and I lost my cable modem and now the printer is doing this.

I have read in the threads that the likely causes are the lcd $20, formatter $20, and firmware $29. None of these are cost prohibitive to replace. Does this make sense? If I replace the firmware is there a difference in versions?

I have found these two, both are $29

Firmware, DIMM Upgrade, V6.32, LJ 4050/N/T

Firmware, DIMM Upgrade, V6.36, LJ 4050/N/T

Thanks in advance for your help.

Power the printer off and remove the JetDirect card. Power on and see if the display works. If it doesn't work, replace the formatter first. If it does work, search the forum on baking the card instructions.

Thanks that the JetDirect card did not affect the problem. I will replace the formatter.

Is there a difference in the firmware versions?
