Epson Epson Stylus CX4600

Epson CX4600

I am considering buying one of these all-in-ones and wanted any opinions on it and Epson in general.I didn't see any posts on it in particular and wondered if that is a good thing.

I'm furious! All I get is blank pages and I wasted so much ink on doing their stupid nozzle check and clean printer heads. So I have to call customer support, but don't you know, their hours are 6am-6pm EST. What about people who work? I can't call from home during those hours.

So I called from work and the gal didn't want to help me because I wasn't at home with the printer. But she gave me hope-- She let me know that they are open on Saturdays, from 10am-7pm. I was very happy to hear this and thanked her. "Have a nice day, la la la" etc.

Well, it's Saturday and I called them, and all I got was a recording that I have to call during the hours of 6am - 6pm EST, M-F. GRRRRRR! Why did she lie to me? I'm so upset. I have wasted so much time already.

I've been trying to make a simple copy on my Epson CX4600. However, each time I try to make a copy by pressing the "Start B&W" button, I get a flashing "error" light and a flashing "H" in the copy LED area of my printer. I've tried turning off and back on my printer. No luck. Any other tricks that anyone knows of?

I think because the heads are clogged, the printer thinks it's out of ink when it's not, and also if a number of print cleanings are attempted, the printer or cart keeps track of ink useage and subtracts what would have been used in a cleaning. But since no ink was used in the cleaning, because the heads are clogged, the ink reads out. And just so even one sees this, I am going to state it again,
The 4800 has the same setup / printhead / ink cart orientation as the 4600, so it's only a matter of time before it this starts to happen on the 4800 we all have gotten in replacement.
I was using non-Epson ink in my 4600 and from the link above bought replacement ink for the 4800 at eforcity.com.
Really cheap ink prices. Haven't had to install one yet.

Anyone "out there" willing to "part with a CX4600" that is printing blank pages really cheap. I need a front panel assembly. I damaged the small cable to the panel on one that I have (during disassembly this afternoon). Bought it about 2 years ago. Started printing blank pages about 4 months ago.

By using this site and "working with" the CX4600 "for a bunch of hours", I think "I found the problem". The last piece of waste tubing was "stopped-up solid" at the very end (where the "ink dumps out" on the unit bottom and is "soaked-up"). This is a "bear to get to". Had to "tear the unit down to bare bottom" to reach this tubing.

Somewhere on this site there are detailed instructions for checking/cleaning the waste tubing. The disassembly instructions referenced are not for a CX4600 (at least the one I have). But it seems to work!!!

I can part with my CX4600 that used to print blank pages (second one - Epson replaced the first one with another 4600 then 1 year later this one died too). I took it apart (all the way to bare bones as well) and cleaned out all the waste tubing, used the ink cleaning stuff from this site and it unclogged everything and was working fine for a while. Then, the yellow starting going crazy and overprinting everything. Sooooo, I just unplugged it and put it in my garage. If all you need is the front panel, I can send just that. Or if you want the whole thing for spare parts, I can do that too. Let me know. I now have an HP and Epson won't be getting any more money for ink from me.


Note for Epson rep reading this site: this is my first non-epson printer. You lost a loyal customer - even the sales guy at Staples told me to not buy another Epson. Suggest you get your management to listen and clean up design.

I just called with same problem of CX4600 not printing at all. I got the spiel about it being out of warranty and my options. They originally said I could pay for service but I ended up insisting they take care of it since it obviously has a flaw (and thousands of internet posts prove it). They are sending me instructions and a label in the mail to get it repaired for free. if they can't repair it, they will replace it for free with a newer model. Not bad! Too bad we already bought an HP for home use. Good luck to all of you 4600CX sufferers... demand they repair or replace even if out of warranty. Epson knows this product is problematic and faulty!

I also have this printer...bought it in late January 2005. I have had NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS!!! Finally today, after reading about all the other issues in this forum about this same printer, I called Epson. They tried to "troubleshoot" the printer, but I had done everything they wanted to try. Finally they decided to send me a upgraded replacement CX4800. Sure hope this new/refurbished model will be an improvement as I am looking at buying a second printer but am skeptical about buying another Epson...any comments?

I got mine last December. It just quit on me, print faded to nothing, then won't print. Called Epson and after troubleshooting and having done everything they said already, they shipped me out a CX4800. Hope this one works!!

I'm also having some trouble with this printer...had it for almost a year now and I noticed today that it leaks ink. I've had it sitting in the same spot for several months. By chance I had to pick it up and move it and I noticed a big blob of ink on my table. Kind of explains why it seemed to run out of ink so fast. It's leaking from the compartment in the back...I removed the screw and took a look inside and there's ink everywhere...very messy looking. And one of the tubes was just hanging there. I don't know what to do, but I hope Epson will send me a CX4800 simply for the fact that this one is a piece of crap. Will I have to ship this one in to them though?

I just got one of these Cx4600 ..but cant install it ..some wierd icon (green arrow) comes up on task bar telling me to remove usb..hardware controller etc.
I have xp pro. sp2 and downloaded the correct drivers from epson
but things still didnt go good there was red flashing error lightnext to power button on the cx4600.. i couldnt even scan or anything...
ALSO i was borrowing the T0441-etc. series cartrages from my C66 printer..hope thats not what cause problems...
the cx4600 uses T044120-etc. series..whats differences anyways and is it bad idea to inter-swap them?
I bought a refill kit that includes (so they say) c66 as well as cx4600....sounds funny to me if they are 2 different type inks...why would a ligit refill kit include both c66 and cx4600 ??

When you folks got the CX4600 replaced, did they ask you whether or not you used non-Epson brand ink cartidges (ie things that may void the warranty)?

BTW, I am having the same no print problems as everyone else and I only bought this unit in February and used it maybe 15 times.

does anyone know how to re-assemble the waste ink pad in the 4600? i got it out, but can't figure out exactly how it goes back in. i did not disassemble the whole printer. just the top housing so that i could get to the ink pad. any help would be appreciated. printed out the pics and directions, but they don't show real well all the intricate parts.

Bought the same 4600, and had the same problems as everyone else -- blank pages. I was at work and was able to take advantage of the 6am-6pm CST by telling the tech I was at home. I pretended to walk through the troubleshooting with her and convinced her that all I had was blank pages. Anyway, they decided to send a 4800 out and I received it in about 4 days. Just tell them you bought it about 11 months ago and they will honor it if the mfgr date is close.

Thanks! Just made the call and my new printer is on its way. Epson gets high marks from me with the no hassle replacement.

I would not recommend telling them if you used generic ink. Mine died with the original color cartridges so it is not just a generic issue. Thanks for everyones tips.

I too had a cx4600 stop printing. I returned to the store and got a replacement only to have that one go blank. I didn't know what to do and found this web site. I called Epson, gave them the serial number, and told them that I had cleaned the head and done the nozzle test half a dozen times using the PC and at the printer. They very nicely said that I had a hardware problem and that a new CX4800 would be to our house in 3-5 days. I guess they have found out that they built a piece of crap. I didn't know the warrenty was for ONE year. They're losing money on this. But the guy I talked to was very nice and friendly.

Just tried getting through to Epson. Same problems, no image at all. They basically told me to go piss up a tree since I don't have my receipt. No upgraded printer for me :(

Guess my next purchase will be a nice laser printer, and all my photos will go to the photo lab for development.

You don't need a receipt. Just make up a date and a store. When I called they only wanted the purchase date. You can use my date 8/23/05. Tell them you did the cleaning and nozzle test at least 6 times both from the PC and at the printer. That's all, now I have the CX4800 after 3 days. I don't know how well it will last. It has the same setup as the CX4600, but at least it's new and FREE.

My epson CX4600 turns on but makes a weird spinning noise as if it is not connected to the line. It goes through as a normal print and the printer "believes" it is printing, but it doesn't. Just a blank page prints out. I need help!! Let me know if there's anything I can do to fix it myself!! Thank you!!

I have a CX4600. about a week ago we had to replace the ink cartridges. Then when we replaced them,they would not work. We ran an ink test and it said the problem was the ink cartridges were empty but are brand new and full of ink. We have ran the troubleshoot on Epson.com, but it still shows that the cartridges were empty. What else can be done?

This is the second CX4600 after Epson customer service sent me a replacement.

Same problem: clogged ink jets. Ink jets suck. Never again.

I bought a laser printer from another company and I'm not looking back. I don't need color that badly. I can print at 3,500 pages before I have to replace a laser toner cartridge. DON'T BUY INK JETS. Lasers will save you big bucks in the not-so-long run, even a color laser.

Sorry for everyone who this information hasn't worked out for. But as for me, I'm sticking with Epson. And why? Because I called in to lodge my complaints with my literally "blank" page printing CX4600 last week Thursday; went through the tech support song & dance (even though I had already done it all on my own). And in the end, Epson stood by its product.
My printer was purchased on 12/24/2004. Yep, out of warranty. But because I told them I had my receipt (and I really do thanks to online orders being kept on file at circuitcity.com), the rep said that Epson would simply extend the warranty period by a month, and that the company would replace my faulty CX4600 with the new CX4800 for FREE.
And yes, folks, the receipt is key. Prior to the phone representative knowing that I had my receipt, he was only offering to sell me the CX4800 at a reduced price. When he asked for my purchase date I told him that the receipt was from the date previouly detailed. After confirming that I had my receipt with NO more than the question "So...you have your receipt?" the offer changed from a reduced price purchase to a FREE replacement.
But it gets even better. Because I'm a Mac user still running OS 9.1, and the CX4800 is formatted for use with OSX, the rep offered to send me a new (though probably refurbished) CX4600––which would have been fine with me. I loved that printer. But when the package arrived Wednesday (less than one week later), a note inside indicated that the CX4600 was no longer available, so I was sent an upgrade, the CX6600 model, instead. And if that wasn't sweet enough, what really knocks me over about this entire process is that I was still also sent the free CX4800 as well! Talk about exceeding the customer's expectations...
Just last week the problem was that just over a year after I purchased my Epson CX4600, I didn't have a working printer. This week the problem is that I have two new printers, but only one computer!
Epson stands by their printers, folks. So I'll stand with Epson the next time I need to buy one––which I can only hope will be a few years from now.
Realistically, you may not get two printers out of it (unless you're on a Mac runnin OS 9.1 like me), but it's still worth it to get a replacement for the CX4600 that you purchased from Epson in good faith. Good luck, ladies & gents. Thanks, Epson!

Boy! Talk about deja vu!
All that everyone has been talking about has happened to us also. We now have a new 4800. And yes, the nice canadian young man, who said that he was in Ontario by the way, had me do the nozzle cleaning through the kaput-compute. He said that each time you do it it gets progressively stronger. I think that I will try the drain tube idea too. Then I would have an extra printer. Now all I need is an extra puter... :0)

I called them and they asked me the numbers off of each ink cartridge. Jumped thru the hoops and they are sending me a CX4800. They said to leave the power on all the time or the heads would dry out.
If you need the number, Goggle Epson support. Didn't right the number down, 520???. Had to pay for the call, but got a free printer/scanner. Of course it cost me four ink cartridges doing all the cleaning.

No. Epson told me the direct opposite. I repeated what they said and they confirmed it. In sum, TURN OFF the printer when not using it for a couple hours or so. And RUN the printer at least ONCE a week. Presumably that keeps the nozzles happy!

I'm getting the 4800 too. Hope they fixed the 4600 bug.

Meanwhile, I will still try to fix the 4600. Anyone know if cartridge-based cleaners work? Printerpal has them for \%8.95 each, which means I'd need one per color, I guess. I've seen the cleaning solution elsewhere, but the directions using it are daunting!

I also have a CX4600. It is total junk. It only worked when I used the cartridges that came with the printer - thats how fast it crapped out. I'm gonna have to open it up and clean it. It is a complicated POS.

Can someone that received an upgrade verify this?

When I call Epson I need to tell them when it was purchased (to verify that its still under warranty), I have to frivolously go through a troubleshooting procedure with them (although I'm fully aware that this piece of s*** is jacked up), and I have to give them the numbers on the ink cartridges? Are you referring to the product numbers (T044120-Black, T044220-Cyan, and so on)?

Also, how's that 4800 working for you? Is it a much of an improvement and are the ink cartridges from the 4600 compatible with it?

I didnt' have to give any cartridge numbers. I just told him that I had had it a year. He said that I was with in 30days of the warranty expireing so he would send me a new one. I'm afraid to try the ink from the 4600 in the 4800, for fear that I might screw something up.
I've only used the 4800 a few times. I plan to print some pictures from my files, so we'll see how that goes.

I just called customer service and told them about my dilemma. After about 5 minutes the epson rep sent me a CX4800.

The call was relatively hassle free. I started off by providing the serial number and printer model. I told her that I already tried all of the troubleshooting procedures from the printer setup menu and the Epson website. I assured her that I did the nozzle cleaning about 5 times before I called (thus depleting a substantial amount of ink. Surprisingly each successive print test provided worse results than the last.) Finally, I just had to provide the date when I purchased that crappy piece of crap crapper (06/09/05). I'm sure you can probably make a date up as long as its within in the warranty period.

Oh yeah, one last thing. Although i was using generic ink (which really doesn't matter) I told her that I had Epson brand ink cartridges just for the sake of making this process quick and easy. In case they ask for product numbers refer to this page [http://www.epson.com

Anyway, my printer will be here in 5-7 days. I hope it works well.

I was this close [ ] to setting the Epson headquarters on fire. If this new printer doesn't work, arson is back on the menu! lol

Well, everyone, I can now say that after jumping through their hoops, and sparring past their offer to repair my CX4600 at no charge, then to sell me a CX4800 at a fair & reasonable price (considering mine went out of warranty one month ago), they decided to send me a CX4800 at no charge. They did emphasize that this was a one time offer, but I still thought it was entirely fair. Their customer service department gets my kudos!! The jury's still out though on the 4800. We'll let you know how it works.

Well after reading all of the tips on this site,I may have solved my problem...I had the same dilemma like all of you,new ink/no print.SoI read about cleaning the nozzles with Hydrogen Peroxide,and thats what I did.I took all of the ink out and clean the ink cartridge carrier, with a cotton swab and the peroxide,and I held the swab on each nozzle,and saw the ink being absorbed out.Put the ink back,turned it on,and it started printing,but 50\%,it was very faint,and it had blank lines.So I sent the ink carrier to the left,turned off the power,and I clean the bottom(underneath the printhead)with the peroxide and swab,and a lot of ink came out.I cleaned it up enough and tried it again,and printing almost all back,about 90 \%.Then I read here to set print on full colour and black,highest quality,which I did and set it to Photo Paper,and print of a couple of copies,and it almost fixed the the entire printing,it got better every time you did,to back to normal.It is ironic that it is the"cleaning cycle" that clogs up and dirtys up the nozzles...It is the waste pad and tubes that caused the problems from the beginning.There is a little door at the rear,and if you open it you can see the waste tube.I haven't tried it yet,but I will unplug the top,and put into a bottle,thats what been suggested.I guess the waste pads just fills up over the months,and starts to shoot the ink up the print head.It's a simple fix,yet Epson says to throw this one away,so they can send me an 4800 !What kind of a service/repair department is that ?Thats like having a flat tire,and the garage says throw away your car,we'll give you another one... All they have to do is replace the waste pads, yet it is easier for them to replace the entire printer.Very odd...

Wow. Im glad to know this is a common well known issue with the printer. The guy I spoke to at Epson claimed it was NOT a known issue, but then also claimed my printer would never print again and apparantly a new one is to arrive to me in a couple days...
Sure they good to replace it, but the quality of the product is so low I will never give epson any of my money ever again.

wow i'm glad im not the only one with this problem... today i have a new cx4800 on it's way, the guy at the tech office just asked for the serial and place of purchase after he heard the words "cx4600".. like he already new the problem :) looks like the canadian office is flooded with calls then :) anyways after reading this and a q-tip/peroxide plus 5mins later my cx4600 is working again and my new 4800 will be here in 'LESS than 5 business days' .. i guess my next order of business should be the wastes tubes.. and check out how long my new cx4800 will lasts cheers all

My ink lines are clogged and will not print two of my colors. How do I take this this thing apart to repair it. Do I take the scanner top off and if so how do I get to the hinges? If I cannot repair this thing it will go in the trash.

WOW!!! I can't believe that so many others have had the same problem with this printer. I have gone thru three sets of cartriges (all Epson brand) which is quite pricey!!! I haven't had my printer a year yet and I don't use it much so I was surprised that it started printing blank pages. I was so frustrated last night that I was ready to ship it back to Epson and say thanks for nothing!! I went thru all the nozzle printhead cleaning thing too. I'm not about to take the thing apart and figure out how to clean the nozzles manually with Hydrogen Peroxide. I sent Epson an email last night and they told me to clean the heads. I sent them one back and told them I already did all that. They sent me another email and told me to call their customer service department for assistance. I'm glad to hear that all of you got or are getting new printers. I hope the same holds true for me.

Before you take anything apart,try the easiest thing first,clean out the printhead with peroxide,underneath,the head,It is simple.
The waste tube access,is at the rear,there is a little door with one screw.If you are planning to pull it off and put into a bottle,there is where it is.AND FOR MAC USERS UNDER OS 9.1 THE CX 4800 WILL NOT WORK OR BE RECOGNIZED AT ALL !!!I just went through this,so I had no choice but to fix my 4600,but it was easy.

I called the customer service center last night. I have a new replacement printer on the way!!! The rep said it would take 5-7 business days. I was very pleased with the way the Epson rep handled my call.

My 4600 is printing same blank pages, just spent $50 on new ink (Epson), did the whole print head cleaning dance, and still blank pages.

Called epson, told them what's up, they wanted to know the serial #, purchase date, and purchase location; then agreed to send replacement 4800.

It's unfortunate the 4600 has such problems. I like Epson, and feel they've done right by me, but unfortunate we (the consumer) need to go through this at all.

Yes, the customer service was excellent, but if they make crap then I'll be switching to something that will last. I know that's a lot to ask in this day. I had a Cannon that I got about 1996 - serial hook up. Had to put in 3 print heads, but that thing would always work. I think back and would really like it back. But you can't get ink for it anymore. I chose Epson becase of the features and the cheap ink. These printer guys rip you off with almost free printers, and then stick it to you with the price of thier ink. I use NON-EPSON ink and save a bundle.
Why can't their be places like this for your car?????
Or for jsut about anything for that matter??

T DID IT AGAIN !!!!IT WENT INTO THE CLEANING CYCLE AND SHOT UP THE INK !!!!It does this random.This time I soaked as piece of paper towel in the peroxide,and placed it over the watse pad,and let the print head go over it.IT WORKED AGAIN.Lucky for us we have an extended warranty from the store.So we are going to tell to fix this or give us the exact same product type,and system requirements,meaning If I bought multifunction printer w/MAC OS 9.1 they will to give another multifunction printer W/MAC OS 9.1,doesn't matter what brand.I WILL NEVER BUY EPSON!!!And there are alot of MAC OS 9.1 users with this printer.We are screwed, because Epson doen't support our system anymore,BUT THEY KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN TO THOSE CUSTOMERS ALSO,BUT DIDN'T CARE....A good company looks after all their customers,and doesn't write them off,because some of them are not making them money at the moment.I hope our extended warranty,is our last chance for fairness.

I got Epson CX4600 on 2004. i haven't had any big problems but after reading all these comments, i'm worried that soon, it will stop working. do u think i should just call in and make up that its bad? i mean, if i wait longer, i'm afraid that they won't replace it once its really gone bad. did u guys send ur cx4600 back?

Here is the procedure that got my CX4600 printer working again:

Symptoms: head cleaning made the test pattern get worse instead of better, until I got no test pattern at all.

Tech Support: Epson sent me a new CX4600 without asking me to return my existing printer.

Self Support: With a free printer on the way, I decided to try to clean the unit myself... Steps:

1. Unscrew the service panel door on the back of the unit to expose the waste tubes.
2. The direction of flow is "down from the TOP tube, into the plastic elbow, out to the RIGHT tube that goes to the waste repository".
3. Disconnect the plastic elbow from both tubes.
4. Clean the elbow using a paper clip and peroxide until it is completely unclogged and clean.
5. Get a waste receptacle, such as a small cup or something to catch the ink, and place it under the TOP tube. You will probably have to aim the tube with your fingers or a pair of pliers into the cup. The waste is going to spray out, possibly spatter if the waste has become hardened in the tube, so make sure you're doing this somewhere that you can clean up easily.
6. With the waste tube aimed at the cup, hold down the "ink" button on the printer until the cleaning sequence starts. The sequence will take about 20 seconds and blow the tube out in spurts.
7. If stubborn, you can loosen the junk in the tube using some peroxide - it doesn't take more than a drop from the end of a q-tip to start eating away... give it a few seconds to work itself upwards into the tube. Massage the peroxide up the tube with your fingers for more effectiveness.
8. Run the cleaning cycle one or two times to make sure that there is either air or nice wet ink coming out, but no more solid waste.
9. Reassemble
10. Connect CX4600 back to your printer, and print a test pattern... perhaps one more cleaning... should be fine.

Your CX4600 is a good value for the dollar. Sure it can have problems, and yes it is going to eventually be replaced by a newer and better model... just like every other electronics product ever made in the universe.

The main reason that I like the Epson printers is because I prefer the Epson software - which is relatively small, easy to install, and for me has been absolutely error free.

Here are some tips to get the most out of your dollar:

Epson has a warranty program that is just as good as every other vendor. If you aren't the responsible type who can put your receipts in a file cabinet, then TAPE your receipt to the bottom of your printer. Or, register your product online. Everyone should know by now, that it is becoming increasingly more difficult to "get a freebie" from a warranty without a receipt or registration... so take your precautions early, or lose your right to complain.

This is a minor inconvenience to you, in order to preserve the longevity of your printer. I was told several times by inside tech people at Epson that this is the number one reason that they start to experience problems.

Print the test pattern before you decide to clean it. If it printed ok, then dont clean it. You dont want to waste expensive ink, nor do you want to force unwanted waste into the small and easily clogged waste receptacle, unless you really NEED to.

Most problems are solved with simple solutions. Follow the standard troubleshooting procedures first to help you determine if your problem is simple or not. If not, try disconnecting the printer and just making a color copy... thats the easy way to determine if the problem is the printer or your computer. If the problem is your computer, dont expect an immediate fix from Epson or anyone else... it takes a little time to work through your issue and help you resolve it. P.S. No, I dont work for Epson... I've had my ups and downs with them, but their product still is the best fit for me.

I recieved my replacement Epson printer 4800 today. Thanks to everybody that posted instructions on this thread.

I would like to give Epson my props for standing behind their products. I would also like to say that Southwest Airlines and American Express also have given me great service in the past.

I would on the flip side like to say that it has been my experience that Checker,Schucks,Kragen Auto refuses to stand behind their products. I would advise you NOT to due business with them.

Had an Epson CX4600 and it started printing blanks. Its out of warranty, about 2 years now. I called customer service and they told me they would charge, otherwise it's free to email.

I emailed and they sent back troubleshooting instructions. After you do all of them (which I already did) you can call back cust. service for free. Tell them you did ALL the troubleshooting steps and they will transfer you to the right department that will help you resolve issue.

I was transferred an offered 3 options:
1. $40 off new printer on Epson.com and free ship
2. Ship CX4600 back (they pay for shipping) and they will see if they can fix it otherwise you get a new CX4800.
3. I dont remember 3rd option.

I opted for option 2. They sent shipping label and I got a brand new CX4800 1.5 weeks later. They even give you brand new epson ink!!! What a deal! And yes, your old CX4600 ink works with the CX4800.

Epson is excellent since this was already out of warranty.

Does anyone know how you get to the sponges under the ink cartridges? I have read from an article that you fill this spot up with windex and it rectifies the blockage. I can't see anything resembling sponges when I remove my cartridges. Oh, by the way my second cx4600 is shooting blanks and they have offered me the $40 rebate toward a cx4800.

The "sponges" are under where the printhead parks. If you get the printhead to the middle you will see it on the right, however windex is not recommended by those who know. FYOP sells an Epson cleaning flush but if you are willing to take a chance, that's where to find the sponge.

I can only see one sponge and it has an X figured very fine wire on top. I was expecting more sponges and a tray which was possibly located under the cartridge holder. The article I read said to fill this tray and sponge area with windex and let sit for an hour, and this would disolve the congealed ink. Not seeing any tray and only 1 sponge in the parking spot and no real receptacle to hold a fluid,
I was unsure of where to look.

I just got off the phone with epson.. I'm getting my new cx4800 next week! My cx4600 didn't even make it through one pack of paper or to it's six month birthday. What CRAP! Customer service was amazing.. they asked me two questions and told me my new printer will be arriving soon. I have owned 2 other epsons in the past.. One was replaced by a color printer.. then that color printer was replaced, after years of service, only because it got dropped during a move. I will stay with Epson.. they make great a great product and obviously own up to thier mistakes.

My Epson CX 4600 Multifunction device (Print/Scan/copy) has turned out to be the biggest piece of garbage.
It comes with miniature ink carts that print 100 pages only…
then if you only wish to print black, if your color cartridges are out you are screwed and have to buy color to get black to work(Trust me...I even bought the cartridge resetting chip).

Unbelievable….all I wanted was a space saver on the desk and got a pile of junk that requires you to buy color cartridges you do not use.

Now the ink wells have dried up and require me to bring in the machine….well, they don’t do repairs anymore…..they are sending me out a newer machine that will require me to buy new ink cartridges every 3 weeks? (It is free but it is prone to the same problems the tech said)

What the hell do I do with the new black ink cart I just installed? It does not work with the new machines.

I read the earlier links....Someone said there is a drain hose that is blocked? What about the ink wells- they are probably dried up?
How do I clean this piece of junk? Do I have to take apart the printer and platin?


I have been in technology for 20 years...this is the most ignorant design I have ever seen. Even if it gets you to buy new ink carts every 2-3 weeks, the design is such that it WILL CLOG and JAM. And is NOT EASILY SERVICABLE, and MUST BE REPLACED.

Relating slightly to the beginning of this thread - does anyone know how to print in black and white with the CX4600 when the three colors are out? I've gone into OS10 system settings, set to black in printer utility, etc... this seems to me like ploy to make me buy more ink when I don't need it, and I'm beginning to not trust the 'Black' setting - recently I have had no use for color and yet the ink has still run out.

All I can say about this thing is thats its possessed!
My Girlfriend bought this "little gem" well over a year ago and completed 8 printed pages, two photos and three scans total then POOF! Dead!
It acted like it was powered off even if all the lights were on but did nothing. She called Epson, went through every test they could suggest, then they gave up. She received the "upgrade" and was told they did not want the little beauty back. She gave the thing to me to take to the computer graveyard but it sat in my garage for the next few months collecting dust.
I then find a person looking for the top cover and tell him Ill give him the one off this before I trash it. Just for giggles I plug it into my laptop for one last check and guess what? IT WORKS FINE! I gave the entire unit to my buddy and will call a priest for an excorism of the garage just in case.
I have a few other Epsons and have never had or seen this many problems. At the prices they charge they are quickly becoming throw away printers. With rebates and sales, it's cheaper to buy another one than it is to buy consumables or fix a broken one. Less headaches too.

No lancelot916, the 4600 ink carts don't fit in the 4800. Yes they are the same size, but the part in the front that keeps you from installing the black in the magenta slot is reversed in the 4800. So now we all have to get new ink.
I checked the link provided above -
and they have real cheap prices. I thought I found a cheap ink place, but this one is even better.

And by the way I just did the hydrogen peroxide cleaning of the printhead and the exhaust tube, not hard at all.
After I got my 4800, I put the crap of a printer, the 4600, in my garage and forgot about it. I'm sure the ink froze while out there. The other day after reading this web page again, I thought I'd try to fix the crap printer.
And to my surprize it works!!

By now everyone must have looked at the 4800 and found that it too has the very same set up as the 4600. So when will these crap printers stop working??

And what do you use as the resevior for the ink tube?
I've been trying to come up with something.

Okay, I've read all of this. It all concerns the print heads. What if you are told the print heads and the pads need replacing? Has anyone gone into that issue? Do you still try to fix it yourself?

Well, I hope all who have input there sob stories here keep checking back. My NEW 4800 went out. Although it wasn't a complete white sheet it printed, it was close. It was full of lines and not much of the print was readable. So I guess this one is just as bad as the 4600.

I have gotten my 4600 back to working order just a week ago, so I went ahead and tackled this problem.

I removed the ink carts and used perioxide on a Q-tip and put on each of the points that the ink sits on. I did this two or three times. Then I used a wet Q-tip and tried to clean the underside of the printhead. I couldn't get much on the left side, but on the right it was quite dirty, and I haven't printed much with the 4800 yet. I used about 4 or 5 Q-tips on the right side before I thought it was enough. I then tried a copy and it wasn't much better. So I cleaned the the underside a few more times, and tried a copy. And it worked!!!
All be forwared, this NEW 4800 looks to be the same crap 4600 is. Didn't we all get screwed on this deal!!

Hey, I suffer from the same problem. I followed the directions above and the rep wanted to charge me 9.99 to diagnose the problem.

I got up on my high horse, and said BUT I BOUGHT THIS PRINTER ON APRIL 15TH 2005. Which I mde up of course, and they are sending a new printer out. No recept needed.

I don't feel guilty, because this problem has been unending, I've only managed to print about 300 pages all told this year. I've spent more on ink than on the printer.

I read many forums, websites dedicated to this issue. I've also spent lots of cash on catridges as has everyone else on this list. I took my machine apart, cleaned it, put it back together, got a little blip, then nothing again. But I found my solution, and I encourage you to do the same when you're at the end of the road with the good ol' 6400: 1. Disconnect printer from power and computer, 2. Move to location outside or to a garage, 3. Get a hammer, 4. Release all frustration built up during the fix period, 5. Collect all pieces and put into a box, 6. Open and spill unused ink cartridges over remainder of printer, 7. Seal box, 8. Address box to Epson America, Inc.

Yes, there will be a postage charge. But if enough people (and from the last two months of research there are a LOT) do the same thing, Epson will have a nice little garbage problem on their hands at the Long Beach address. Well, I get to join the club. I've had mine for just over a year and just before the warrenty went out, mine started to do the same as all the others. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time back then to troubleshoot or call in.....now, I'm past the date. Maybe they will cut me some slack. I too have joined the club. Had a C80 that was a workhorse for years before it crapped out and replaced it with the CX 4600 which I have generally liked until today when it did the same thing everyone else has complained about. I thought I was crazy since all the troubleshooting does not work! I already have a CX 4800 that I purchased for my daughter and have not given to her yet, so will put that into use while I play the support game with Epson. Wish me luck!

I also had this problem..printing out blank pages..even after I replaced the ink cartidges. Also, I ran the head-cleaning procedure more than enough times and still...nothing. So I decided to call Epson Customer Service like you guys suggested and I now have a CX4800 coming my way! Which is great! I jsut hope that it doesn't do the same thing as my 4600. For all those who have this problem as well, call them, and get yourself a new All-In-One!
One bad thing though, is that I just bought new ink for the CX4600 but CX4800 does not use the same ink...so now I have 4 cartidges just sitting there.

I have a 18 month old cx4600 which after buying new Epson ink Cartridges at a cost of about $90Cdn found it only printed blank ages. I phoned for help which was reluctantly given because the 1 year warranty had passed and after 3 head cleanings and using a third of my ink it still prints only blank pages? They then offered to repeir for a cost in excess of what I paid for it or could buy a replacement so I am disgusted with Epson and will never buy anything from them. When I bought my inks cartridges in Staples the young lady that served me said she was aware of the problems with the CX4600 and said she would not recommend Epson printers and suggested Canon or HP as a more reliable printer. In the meantime I am out the cost of the new cartidges which makes me mad!

I have this same crummy printer. The cartridges just ran out for the first time so I replaced them and spent a ton of money only to find the printer will not print anything but blank pages. I've ran the cleaner cycle 6 times, let it sit overnight and still nothing. I will never by Epson ever again! Totally not worth it!!! This is such a piece of junk Do Not Buy IT!!

I too have called Epson and after giving them the info (Bought form Office Depot in May 2005 and serial number) and told them I'd swaped out cartridge after numerous cleaning attempts they shipped me a new CX4800 w/ink. I called 28 Mar 06 and the printer arrived 3 Apr 06. They told me to dispose of the CX4600 in a environmentally friendly fashion.

I really appreciate this forum and all the good tips I received.

Epson is a scam. When your printers are defective they ALWAYS ship you out re-furbished units from their warehouse. THe ink is not the problem with the printer. It's the shotty design of the print head that causes this issue. EPSON knows about it, and does nothing but give you options to fix your broken printer (in which sometimes they ship it back to you still broken) or they give you a discount to buy a newer model that will more than likely break down within the one year warranty. There are a lot of people with these problems. To bad it is a waste of peoples money, time, and enviromental loss. Epson, shame on you. You will be bankrupt soon at these tactics.

Same problem here... I just got off the phone with Epson. After working through a very reluctant converstation with tech support and their "customer loyalty department", they finally offered to fix the printer for free. I told them that I would not waste one more drop of ink on a CX4600 and they said that was all they could do. I'll be looking at Cannon printers today!

I had the same problem as everyone else here.

I'm going to try to clean the Epson Cx4600 so that I can use my newly replaced ink cartridges for the last time. I no longer intend to waste anymore money on Epson's ink or their printers unless they make laser ones. It's super unfortunate because for the times that it DID work (10 months?), the print quality was absolutely beautiful.

When the Cx4800 comes in, I will use that until the ink runs out too. I can't afford to keep buying these cartridges and wasting ink "recharging ink" and doing "nozzle checks".

I bought a CX4600 from a Fry's Electronics store approximately 6 months ago, and within a month of light use it was already failing to print simple text documents. Fortunately I had a friend with a nice Canon printer, and I was able to get printed what I needed. Miraculously, the cx4600 started working again within a week of it being totally useless and without any effort on my part to make it work, and I didn't think much of it as it continued to work well over the following months. Days ago, after I printed two full-page color maps (the only color printing I've ever done on it), the printer started telling me that it's out of color ink. I bought new ink, and the message is still the same. I've read through this thread, and I'm betting it's an ink clog, but I'm wondering what would be the best way to proceed.

Should I:
(1) buy the necessary materials and try cleaning it myself?
(2) try getting a replacement (say, cx4800) from Epson, since I'm well within the warranty period?
(3) not bother with Epson printers anymore?

Any thoughts?

PS: When it first crapped out, I tried having the printer clean the heads numerous times, with no positive results. I doubt it would do any good if I could do it now, but since the printer is convinced it's out of color ink (even though it is rather obvious that a vast amount of ink remains, as I hear it sloshing around when I shake the cartridge) I can't even try that! The printer refuses to attempt a nozzle check or a head cleaning as long as it believes no ink remains in one or more of the cartridges. Design flaw?

Typical Epson scenario. The chips on the cartridges are showing empty when there's clearly ink inside. It's not a design flaw, more a design strategy to get you buying carts when you don't need to.

Get one of those chip resetters (like the JR Zapper). This will reset the chips to read 'full' and you can continue using what ink remains in the carts.

Use non-Epson campatible carts to reduce the chances of ink blockages and download the 'SSC Utility' to over-ride Epson's own cart management system. Works very well. You can find details from a little searching around this site.

Hey guys!!! It seems to be a lot of issues with the cx4600 and 4800 here. Well i work for epson here in portland. I actually run the print test lab for them on all there current models. I have to say things depend on the version of the model you got. I dont know if i should be posting here but i really like there printers and i own 3 that i never have any problems with(it helps to know how to repair and take care of them). First off i have to say that using a third party cartriges does really hurt the preformance of the printer head. I have tested many out there and wow. See the real issue of the third party stuff is contamination of the ink and quality of the ink. Most stuff made in china does not conform to the clean room specs that epson uses so there is a lot more stuff to block the heads from printing. I am not an epson fan boy just stating things i have found. Hell even epson stuff from mexico has some contamination issues. We make most of the cartidges here in america so when you buy from a third party the money goes to china and not here in the U.S. I am here to help if anybody needs it!!! I think its my job to help after all with out the consumer there would be no company.Before i worked for epson i used off brand cartridges and always had problems. There are a few tips that i use. I never turn off my printer. I always make sure that the heads rests on the head rest to keep air out of the head. With durabrite ink i remove the cartridges every so offen and shake them. Pigment ink settles and gives a bad print. If i can help i will. For epson, quality and the customer mean alot! I have a few more tips so let me know.

Sorry I don't buy the "I work for Epson" line, PieBoy.
I used and paid good money for the Duribrite ink, and the printer stopped working. I switched to the cheaper knock offs after cleaning the head up, and I haven't had a problem yet.
I also do not have to run off tube inside the printer any longer.
So, maybe if this tube can breathe the printer works better.
You have to admit that the design of the head is terrible.
Where are the bubble jets?????? Mine lasted for years of trouble free print.

Thats what you want to think fine. I have 6 printers a home and no issues. would you like an email from my epson email address? There have been some issues with the durabrite ink and they have switched the formula as of november 2005. If you see a lot stamp on the back of the cartridge(no label)you will see a set of letters and numbers something like 5412HA well that cartridge was made April. find some that are made this year(will have a 6 in the front) and try them out and see if they make a diffrence. Hell i will just buy you some and have you try them, how about that? If the drain tube from the pump is not draining right it will keep backed up old ink on the head, as dust is blown in there it will contaminate the head and cause issues. Its funny that i said i work for them and you assume i am lieing. so j6495 i have help a few people out so far and they seem understand some printer are like cars and need to be taken care of. I like there stuff and have moved everybody in my family from other printers(25 to be exact) not only do they like them but they know where they can go for help. thats for supporting the Americans that work for epson here by using good ol' crap from china. - unknown
Just got off the phone with customer service. The guy was not willing to replace my printer right off, however he is going to send me a free ink cartridge. Then, if that doesnt work they will set me up with an exchange.

My purchase date was 5/2/06. He said it was out of warranty, however there is a 30 day grace period, so they will still honor the purchase.

So now I just have to wait and be printerless until they are convinced that even my cx4600 is a piece of crap too.

Thanks for all the comments, if I didnt read this I wouldnt have even thought to call for exchange. I just kept buying the ridiculously expensive cartridges because each cartrige only printed maybe a dozen times before it became "empty"

BTW, I had registered my Epson when I bought it and I got a letter in the mail last week about a class-action lawsuit they are bringing against the company for these exact issues we all are complaining about.

For those with NO IMAGE, Torpedo51's directions worked great for me. Thanks, Torpedo51! They were slightly ambiguous though. The thing that needed cleaning out was the plastic square-cornered elbow. You only need to remove the tubes from each side, not at their sources (which is impossible). Clean the elbow out (I had to use a syringe and h-peroxide to bow it out). Then reconnect it all and clean and test print. Had no image before fix, then had a PERFECT image after cleaning. Unfortunately, before reading this thread, I blew through a hole set of cartridges trying to clean them. That's sixty something bucks I'll never get back!

JLPT when you get your cartridge can you tell me the lot number off it. When buying cartridges buy only ones that have been made this year. It has a new ink type. I am sorry that you are having problems, is there anything i can do to help? Hell i can send ya a few cartridges if you want. And dont forget to shake them before you place them into your printer. It really makes a difference. I am not an epson fan boy i just want to help you guys out. Just today i sent back two brand new printers C86. One had bad print head and the other didnt even power up and that was from a lot of 30 printers we use in our lab. The printer were better when they made then here in the states. jnrh2001 can i send you are few to replace the ones that you used to clean the heads? Dont turn off your printers trust me the run better when left on. Also when printing stops but you still have ink in your cartridge take it out give it a shake and place it back in, bubbles are the issue most of the times. hope you guys get things worked out. Hit me back i can replace some cartridges for ya!!

My husband is having trouble with his printer. Just out of the clear, it seems to be printing, but black ink is printing. We have changed cartridges, cleaned heads. If we use the "combine ink" option, it still does not work clearly. Any suggestions or is this printer done! Thanks!

Purchased my CX4600 late in 04 but let it set in unopened box till last month. Only used it a few times to copy and the carts furnished with it are stil almost full. It just croaked and will only come on and blink some kind of code with all the lites and the "E" then quit. It will not come on again till much later (like the next day) and go thru the same routine. Tech says that it's a mechanical (they think) problem and unless I can come up with my receipt from CompUSA that I purchased it within the last year, I'm just out of luck, which I can't. Got the same routine from tech about the "Loyalty" thing a discounted price on a CX4800. Was refered to a local approved Epson service shop which charges $85/hr +parts!! Good deal Huh? Any ideas anyone?

Adding to the list of many, my Epson CX4600 is printing blank pages. Phoned tech and was told sorry you need it serviced but there is no one to service it in your area. I told him my next printer would not be a Epson. He said he could offer me a $40 rebate. I told him where he could put that since that was all they were willing to do for me. That doesn't even pay for the price of half the ink I just wasted putting in new ink cartridges!!! I have only had it 1 yr and 4 mo. but I am in Canada and I guess they don't care if I take my business elsewhere!!!!

I'm having the exact same problems with my CX4600. I went through the typical checks, and came to the conclusion that it was that the nozzels must be jammed.

I have a few questions for people that have recieved replacements.
1. Did any of you live in a southern ontario region?
2. How fast did it arrive?

I'll most likely be calling epson tomorrow, while i'm at work. Why dont they have a 24 hour line?, dont they realize that people who buy there products have days jobs...idiots

Well it has happened. My CX4800 is printing blank pages. I knew it was only a matter of time since it has the exact setup as the CX4600. There are just a few things that you expect to right right - Your car starting in the moring, your furnace or AC working right, and being able to print when you want. Before this printer, I would print something and never wonder if it would work, I just expected it to. But with these Epson's, I always watch to see if there is ink on the page. Funny, I got the 4600 to work somewhat, it's not like it was when new, but it prints, and now it's replacement, which I guess I thought would be better, is just the same piece of crap. I wanted to use up the ink that I had bought, but I've had enough. I'm going to buy a better printer. Anybody want to two pieces of crap and their ink??!!??

I was doing some checking on what replacement I should get and I run across some interesting facts. It seems Epson has a differnet way of making it's inkjets work, than everybody else.

Here is my experience with Epson customer service and the CX4600.
Yes, I too had big problems with my CX4600. I don't know how many times my ink heads clogged and I ran my ink dry doing head cleanings. I found this thread and decided to call them. They said "Sorry about your luck, your one year warrantee is up". Even though I was close. I immediately had the feeling I should have lied about the date I purchased it because I doubt they would want proof. I think they just want to hear a date. I called a few times to fight with them, and I think I was close to receiving a new replacement at times, but I couldn't close the deal. I was told I had two options, repair or buy a new one. I was offered a discount through the "loyalty program" which is actually a pretty good deal. I said yes. Then I thought about it, and called back to say no, and that I would send mine in for repair (to them). They told me that they would either repair or replace it if it could not be repaired. I tried to pry to find out the chances of replacement. They would not say much, other than typical "We'll do what we can to fix or replace it". They were polite, I will give them that. Very polite. Well, I sent it in, called them back and was told that I would recieve either my repaired printer or a replacement within 30 days of them receiving it. Well yesterday was day 27. I called customer service, and the rep said he would call me back the next day. He said he didn't want me to call them anymore because I was inconvenienced enough, he wanted to fix the problem. He called me today, like he promised and he said they "lost" my printer. He said I will recieve a new, cx4800 (the new model) in the mail within 5 days. Free (that means no money).
So when you call them. Be polite. They are just doing their job. I was very upset with Epson, but after this kind of customer service, I am impressed. So send in those cx4600's. They may replace it. Who cares how much improvement they've made. It's free, and that means no money.

Yes, Sharkman their customer service is top notch.
When I called them they were very nice and forgiving, and willing to help. But after all that I have been through with the cx4600 and their replacement, cx4800 and it not working either, then shopping for a better printer, I think I can see why their customer service is so nice.
ALL the Epson printers I looked at, had the same cartridge printing setup. Which leads me to believe that they have a potential of having ALL their printers stop printing, which means they had better be nice and forgiving or they will be closing thier doors.
I think they found out they have a hugh problem on their hands, and there isn't much that can be done to fix it, other that coming out with a print setup like the HP's or the Canon's or like anybody elses printer.
Epson has lost this customer. I bought a Canon. I have taken the printhead out of the 4800 and soaked it for 2-3 days. I will reassembly it and see if it works again. Then I will sell it to the first sucker who wants it. I think the 4600 is junk since I have the exhuast tube hanging off the back like I had read in these postings. I am not babying a printer along so that I can use up the ink I bought for it.
Like I said before, there are somethings that you just expect to be working 99\% of the time - your car starting in the morning, your furnace and/or AC in your house, and when I press print.
My first home printer for my PC was a Cannon bubble jet. And I never had any trouble in the 5 plus year I had it. Then I had to go to a USB printer and I unluckly shoose the Epson cx4600. Now I wonder everytime I use either of them if they will print. That isn't how it should be, no matter how excellent their customer service is. So I have replaced the printers that don't work. Epson, sorry, but you have developed and sold products that are sub-par and I don't need them anymore.
The rest of you should think about it.

I am on here trying yo fix my Epson CX4600 right now. Never buy one, I have only had problems with this thing. It is the least used printer in the office and it breaks the most, about everytime we try to use it.

Yea, I thoguht Durabrite ink was a great idea and so was an All-in-one. I constantly had problems with the nozzles clogging. I used it maybe every 2 days and each time I went to print something, i had to run the nozzle check cycle. That wasted a TON of ink.

Lucky me, mine stopped printing one month before the warranty ran out. It was like what everyone else said, it started phasing sections out until it just didn't print anymore. I didn't have any problems at all with customer service. I emailed, they directed me to a number, I called, we went through the "steps" of whatever ("did you run the nozzle check cycle 3x?" etc etc)

They are sending me a cx4800, I should get it in 5 days.

Hi all, I read this forum with interest. I have had a CX4600 for two years, and I do need to clean the print heads when I have not printed for a few days. But other than that, it has been flawless.

I am on my second set of replacement cartridges and I print a lot of photos ... I'd guess I get about 35 4x6 photos per set of cartridges. I use non-Epson cartridges (shh!) from pctek.com that cost about $4 each, so a full set is $16 -- making each photo about $0.50. That's a little more than the photo developing place, but the prints come out looking MUCH better. Not so bad.

I will go ahead and change the tubing for the waste ink though! It's otherwise bound to clog one of these days. Thanks everyone for your tips.

This is the most unreliable printer i have ever owned! i did as suggested on this site and opened up the back - sure enough the tubes are completely clogged. since mine is out of warranty, customer service offered me a 'loyal customer' reward of selling me a cx4800 for only $60! wow - some loyalty reward - they are trying to unload their problems on unsuspecting customers.

I just called today after finding this thread.

I like the others had my receipt. The conversation went like this:

Rep: May I have your model and serial number please
Me: CX4600 Serial XXX
Rep: Oh sir, it appears that this model is out of warranty
Me: Yeah I had called just a minute ago and had my parents (whose printer it is) find the receipt the purchase date was August 6th, 2005.
Rep: Oh, ok sir I'll start an "in-warranty" ticket for you then. Can I have your address (and so on)
Rep: Ok what seems to be the problem.
Me: Well, my parents have had this printer now since last August and in that time they've had to replace the cartridges twice (Again true). Now when I'm printing the "Nozzle Check" it's fragmented. The lines aren't solid. So I ran the clean, which then gave me a worse result than the first time.
Rep: Are you using original Epson ink cartridges
Me: Yes
Rep: Can I have you lift the lid of the unit and give me the serial numbers of the cyan and magenta cartridges
Me: T0443 and T0444
Rep: Oh, since you are using true Epson ink cartridges, this seems like a hardware problem, I'll ship a new printer out to you within 5-7 days
Me: Oh, are you still selling the 4600?
Rep: No sir, you will be receiving a 4800
Me: Oh thank you
Rep: No problem sir.


So I had to give information others didn't but who cares, I was ready to throw Epson out the window but this level of service is unheard of for a printer company.

I just called Epson and because my husband sent in the cards when we purchased it, they already knew it was out of warranty. They told me that if I wanted help, they would charge me $9.95. I said that I didn't want help, I wanted to make a complaint, as I had seen this website and I knew, that they knew, that there was a problem with the 4600. To make a long story short, he did waive the 9.95 charge to talk to him, but all they could offer was to let me buy the 4800 for $90 with a $30 rebate. The other option was to send me return labels, so I can return it for free reapairs, but they will keep it for 4 weeks. Neither is a good option, especially when you consider that although it was purchased in 9/04, it had little usage, as about all we print are the Outlook calendars and school projects. We are done with Epson.

I talked to Epson Customer Support about my printer and the "blank page" problem. I bought this printer 18 months ago so it was not under warranty. They waived the $9.95 fee because I had sent an email first.

I'm on my second set of new cartridges, dozens of head cleaning-test patterns, cleaned the heads myself with some help from this forum and still all I get are blank pages. C.S. said they could repair my printer for free (long wait) or as a "loyal" customer I could buy an upgraded model as a discount. I explained to them how I'm not feeling very loyal at the moment and I don't want the same printer with it's future problems, so I certainly don't want another Epson product that I have to remember to turn off when not in use or print color and black test pages once a week.

My roommate has had an HP printer for 4 years now and believe me, I treat my lawnmower better than she treats that printer and it prints perfectly every time. I'm very disappointed with Epson and will put my future money into a more reliable machine.

Incredible, Epson has settled class action suit claiming that the ink monitor shows nempty before it is. And now I find this forum describing the same issues that I now have. This problem is so widespread that Epson should do a recall or we will all be using Canon or HP all in ones.

DO NOT BUY ONE. I bought three last year, for work, for home, and for my nephew. The one at work ( used the most) crapped out about a month ago. The one at home crapped out this week. First they stop prinitng colors, and then they just print blank pages.
I used to love my old Epsons, but I'm afraid I will now move to another brand. Root cause of problem- Stupid Egineering Design.

Thanks to everyone here for your assistance with the resolution(s) to the issues with the 4600. I too had/have the "print blank page" issue with this printer. Fortunately, thanks to the information provided by you good folks, I was fully prepared for my call in to Epson Tech Support to resolve my printer problem. As expected, I had a mostly similar (and positive) experience with these folks. THey asked the same questions, waived the $9.95 fee (LOL) and I have a ne 4800 winging it's way to me as we speak. The only significant difference I've seen in my experience is that they said they would be mailing me (separately) instructions to return my 4600. This is the first time I've heard of this on this forum. Of course, I can't really complain since they're sending me a "new" printer (they didn't mention and I forgot to ask if it was truly new or refurbished). Interesting sidenote, since some of you mentioned having the same problem with the replacement printer, will we all be calling Epson customer service in 6 months complaining about the same issues with the new printer. Will they then provide us with another new (and free) printer yet again? TIme will tell.... Thanks again to this group.....

Well I'm just another happy poster that am glad i found this, if it wasn't for finding this forum i probably would have trashed it. So i called Epson up...exploded on them telling the guy i've done like 50 cleanings and blah blah blah...I also even got kind of "mad" and said that I had new cartridges in there, and replaced them anyway so i had wasted two sets of brand new cartridges, so not only am i getting the new 4800 but he got it approved to send me an extra set of ink with it too! lol! thanks alot guys

I too have had problems with an Epson CX4600 in that I was getting no prints even after cleaning heads etc. First I lost the ability to print black colors, and then all remaining colors went over the next couple of weeks. Various emails to Epson produced no helpful advice other than wasting my time and lots of ink. As a last ditch attempt I tried to fix the problem before buying a non Epson replacement. I tried the following and it seemed to fix the problem but I am shocked that Epson can provide such a poor product and support.

1) Open up the top of the printer as if you are going to replace the ink cartridges
2) Push the ink replacement button on the top on the machine (the one directly below the power on button. Do this until the cartridges can be easily pulled out).
3) Remove all the cartridges, making sure not to spill any ink.
4) Pull the power cord out of the back of the machine so that there is no power going to the machine (Do not power down using the power off button on the top of the machine as this will park your heads into a non accessible part of the machine).
5) Carefully clean the four nozzles using some cotton buds or tissue until no ink remains.
6) Now remove a small black blastic blanking plate behind which is some flat cabling. The black panel easily pops out after gently levering from the left top side.
7) Remove three retaining screws (two at the back and one at the front right) that you can see at the bottom.
8) Gently pull the plastic square assembly with the four nozzles out of the bottom and turn it over, taking care not to damage the cabling.
9) Once the panel is turned over you will see a grey square membrane. Carefully swipe this surface with a tissue until no ink remains.
10) Reassemble, following the reverse of the procedures above.

As I said, this works for me but I am amazed that Epson has produced such a poor product.

A 4600 I purchased for a little old lady was used very little over ten months. Replacing cartridges did not fix the nearly blank printed page problems. I was about to clean the heads as suggested in positings here, but decided to phone Epson Canada first.
After the usual 'we dont recommend after market ink cartridges' shpeel, they're sending a replacement printer, no charge what-so-ever and dont want the faulty one back. Just requested that I dispose of it environmentally safe.

NEVERMIND EVERYONE!!!! i called today and they are sending me a new printer- a CX4800. I just gave them a date of purchase, answered a few questions and they are sending out the new printer ASAP. they said there must be a blockage in the printer head. thanks to everyone for the great info on this page. it saved me from purchasing a new printer. geez, i had it for a little over a year and it crapped out on me. they owe this to me!!!

I, too, am a victim of Epson CX4600!! I have purchased new cartridges over and over for this thing in the 18 months I've had it and it hasn't worked for the last 6 months. Mine does the same thing as everyone else's and it also tells me my cartridges are empty when I know they aren't. The class-action suit settlement is a joke in that they are going to send out coupons for cartridges of ink but what am I going to do with more ink for a printer that doesn't work. This thing is a piece of junk and I'd like to throw it out the window. I'm thinking of going back to my old Lexmark until I can figure out what I want to get to replace the Epson (and it won't be another Epson). Can anybody give me the phone number so I can call and complain??? Thanks!

I am totally serious - if you do the following before trying anything else you will save yourself a TON of time and effort! (despite which, you will arrive at this solution anyway)

1. Unplug the printer
2. Take the unit out back and go to town on it with a sledge-hammer and a blowtorch
3. Chalk the dollar value loss up as an education on buying an Epson product
4. Enjoy a cool drink and feel REALLY GOOD about what you have done to a source of stress in your life
5. Never buy another Epson product and let the free market system do its job

epson has 2 choices - blow us off if it's out of warranty
what happens then? we never spend a dime on epson again
replace it with another printer and we are happy and continue to buy epson cartridges
we all know there is no money in selling ink jet printers

Surprise of all surprises!! I did get ahold of Epson and they are going to send me pre-paid postage so that I can send in my printer and they will fix it for nothing!! I remember reading about that in this column and they did the same thing. They got a new printer sent to them because Epson couldn't fix theirs. We shall see if that happens with me!! I think they should do a total recall of all CX4600 since they have had so much trouble with them. It can't be paying them to pay everybody's postage and then send them a new printer!! I will let you know what happens!!

I called Epson regarding my CX4600 which had some clogged jets on the black ink. I had purchased the printer at Best Buy and Best Buy was really nice about printing me a duplicate receipt so that I would have some paperwork in front of me when I called Epson.

Epson asked for the model, serial no. and purchase date; I guess they looked the serial number up and must have figured that the sale date matched the time that the serial number should have been sold.

I told them that I had done 8 print head cleaning cycles and there was no change/improvement. They sent me a CX4800 which arrived about 5 days later. They told me to dispose of the CX4600 in an approved way. I figured that an approved way might include partial disassembly so that I could try cleaning the jets as described elsewhere in this forum. It didn't work because after cleaning it said that the two of the tanks which had been 3/4 full just before the disassembly were now empty. I removed the two tanks, shook them and reinstalled them, then it said only one was empty, so I did it again to the one that still indicated empty and it then said that the other one that I had just done the R/R on a little bit ago was empty, then both were empty again. I would have to buy two more new tanks to try it again, but I didn't want to waste even more $$ on this (*&@(*&#[email protected] printer.

The CX4800 wouldn't print a complete test page. I uninstalled the printer drivers a few times and it still wouldn't work. Tech support went through this with me and wanted me to try it with another computer. I waited a couple of weeks until my son could connect to it with his Mac, and the printer had problems trying to print a simple email which had colored text.

Epson is sending another CX-4800, but this time they are holding something like $114 on my credit card until I return the lame 4800. They will extend my warranty so that I have 30 days after I get the new printer to test it and work out the bugs.

I wasn't planning on a sideline career in printer maintenance.

I saw a video of a soldier in Iraq who had a Hewlett Packard all-in-one printer, scanner; he called for tech support and they wanted him to pay for the support, so he took his automatic rifle and blew the thing to smithereenes. I guess all these in jet all-in-ones are junk.

I got the CX4600 as part of a special when I purchased an iBook G4 Nov 2004. In August 2005 it quit working and was replaced at no charge by Epson. I was doing a head cleaning yesterday when the error light went on and all lights started flashing. Printer utility said, "Parts inside your printer are at the end of their service life. See your printer documentation." I did this and went to the web site where I was referred to the service center. I was on hold for over 5 minutes (my dime). I did get an English speaking technition which was nice. He gave me the option of taking it to the nearest service center (over 300 miles from where I live) or going to the loyalty site. I might have considered purchasing one of the models on the site just so I could use the over $50 worth of cartridges I still have on hand. However, why would I consider continuing with Epson based on their track record? I will likely purchase an HP for replacement as I've had good luck with them at work. This one was used at home. Does anyone know how to go about resetting the CX4600 when all lights are blinking and red lights are on for both ink and error? The copy window shows E also. I'm not going to invest any more $ in this for a repair but would like to use up the ink if I can find out how to reset the thing. Thanks.

My CX4600 problem was the same as yours, even 1 year beyond warranty. The service person gave me the same 2 options. I stayed with her on the line, telling her it worked okay for over a year, I liked Epson until now, I'll have to buy other brand, blah blah blah. Eventually she gave me a "third" option for 'faithful' customers... free courier postage to their "repair" facility. Off it went and yesterday... a new CX4800 on my porch.

They then told me my warranty was expired.

However, after I hung up, I googled the printer and discovered this great board. I called back told them that I bought the printer 11 months ago, and now I have a CX4800 on the way.

I just found this site and bless all of you!! I have had the same frustrating problems with my CX4600. I followed all the collective advice, called Epson service, and explained the light ink, missing colors on the pages, multiple attempts at nozzle cleaning, print testing, replacing cartridges, etc. The very friendly guy at Epson did not mention the $9.95 service charge, but I did have to provide the serial number, purchase date within a year, ink cartridge model numbers, and attempted a test page from the printer for him. (I could tell he knew it was a moot point but had to ask me to go through a test printing since that's what they pay him for.)

Now I have an upgraded model CX4800 on the way. Yeah! There was no request for the old printer to be returned. THIS IS GREAT SERVICE... lousy product, but great service.

I know replacing ink with cartridges from my supplier (Ink4art.com) voids the warranty, so I saved the first original Epson cartridges in a ziploc to re-install if I needed in-warranty service. After reading here, I knew I'd need those numbers, so thanks all.

The Epson service representative said the new CX4800 uses the durabrite inks only. Does anyone know if my black ink cartridges from Ink4art.com will be usable?

Will printing a test page every couple of days keep the cartridges and tubes from clogging?

I also own an Epson CX4600 with blank pages and repeated head cleanings. I wasted way too much money on ink. I purchased the head cleaning fluid from this site and it didn't work - still getting the blank pages. I think Epson would begin making true amends by sending HP replacements instead of CX4800's.

This thread was very helpful to me - thank you all. I am considering using the ink collection bottle at the back, using the SSC Service Utility, and even taking my printer apart to clean up the mess as described in one of the links provided in this thread. However, I wish that someone could invent something that will take this farther. Even with the fixes that I mentioned, the printer will still waste way too much ink because the ink head is built into the printer. I don't know, but I'm guessing that the program for automatically wasting ink is burnt into the firmware of the printer. If that is the case, it would be helpful if someone could provide a fix for changing the firmware. Or if the ink wasting routines are in the software, maybe someone could reverse engineer and rewrite the software. Another fix I'd like to see invented is a detachable ink cartridge holder for ease of removing and cleaning with a cheap cleaner rather than with expensive ink that just makes the clogs worse. One other fix that I'd like to see invented is an internal self-cleaning system. So far, all the fixes I see do not remove the problem of ink wastage. In my opinion, that is the best solution I have read. It would be better to get a refund than to have Epson send a CX4800. The CX4800 apparently has exactly the same problems including not allowing to print black only when no color ink is present. I might do as one member here suggested and take the printer out back with a sledge hammer and consider it a loss, lose no more time and money on it, and never buy from Epson again.

I've been using the Epson CX 4600 since January 2005, and aside from all the head cleaning with the associated waste of ink I've
had no problems up until now. Now in the process of changing a
couple of cartridges I've gotten the "E" message with all lights
flashing. Following the procedures in the manual, and going to the Epson website I'm informed that a part has failed. This after a little over a year and a half. I got the printer as part
of a promotion at CompUSA in which I paid the sales tax on 129.00, then received a combination of 129.00 in rebates from
CompUSA and Epson. Later on I saw the CX 4600 offered at 79.00.
When the printer failed I had about 50.00 in unused ink that I'd
bought from LD Products. I called them to see if I could use the
ink in any other printer, and they said, "No, but send us the unused ink for a refund", and that's what I did. The printer's in my garage, and destined for the Salvation Army. An earlier
Epson inkjet all in one worked fine for me for three years, and was still working when I gave it away after getting the 4600.
With that in mind I don't think Epson will continue to make bad
products, but for now I'm switching to HP. The postings on this
website are very helpful. It looks like Epson has some work to do on their low end printers. I doubt that I'll be headed back to CompUSA very soon either.

I am convinced that the problem doesn't lie with the machine, but with the ink. I had constant print problems from day one. Being the cheap bastard I am I refused to pay $60 for replacement Epson ink.

After a quick Google search I placed an order with 123inkjets (at half the price of Epson). I have used their ink for 8 months now with not a single problem. Last week I had a big project to print out and ran out of ink and had to run to a local retailer to get more ink. And guess what? Now with the Epson ink back in, nothing but problems.

I got my Epson as a present and after a year, I got the same problem (this happened a year ago). New Epson cartridges and no output whatsoever. I tried calling tech support only to find out I have to pay the phone support line to talk to me, I said no, hung up, went to my favorite electronics store, exchanged the cartridges for store credit and bought a Canon that I'm very happy with. It's no multi and hasn't clogged at all in the thirteen months I've owned it.

Just to flog a dead horse, I emailed Epson anyways (much cheaper!) and they gave me an authorization code so that I don't have to pay for phone tech support, even though I still had to pay for long distance charges (I could not find any 1-800 number to use in Canada). I used my cel phone, and the tech support guy seemed to relish in extending my call for as long as possible (I used up my cel phone credits in just that one call; so much for avoiding crazy communication charges) before giving me an RMA code to send the non printing printer back to them just to get a new 4600. This new one works fine (been a year now) and I think what I got originally was a lemon.

Their early printers were nice, but these days, all they do is bait-and-switch. Epson does not mean quality, but quantity (i.e. the company nails you in ink sales) and they way they handle tech support is TERRIBLE. At least in Canada, there is no 1-800 number to call. Whenever I see someone buying a similiar Epson product at _any_ store, I warn the customer that they're getting a lemon. I suggest that all readers do the same so the stores (and Epson) will realize that company can't get away with this anymore.

I tried calling the tech line and they asked for my serial number. I gave it, and then was told by the guy that since it has been past my warranty date, they'd have to charge me $10 to take my call - and they don't even guarantee that they'll fix my problem!

BTW, my problem is exactly the same as others: blank page comes out after the printer apparently goes through the motions of "printing". It sounds like everything is working, only nothing gets printed!!! PLUS, I've replaced all my ink cartridges - they're brand new!

Anyone figure out how to at least temporarily solve this problem???

I just dragged one of these out of the trash. After looking over the traffic here I probably should have left it there.

But I hope to use it as a scanner only.I have poked around and found only this statement, viz:

"You cannot scan when any one of the lights is flashing."

Which seems a little too dumb, to me.

Do you know if the unit will scan without ink cartridges?

This printer is a piece of crap i will never do buisness with epson again there machines suck and i ended up taking mine out for a little target practice.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dont ever buy one because they wont help you.

Just got off the phone with Epson Canada. My CX4600 was shooting blanks. When I gave them the serial number, it came up as out of warranty, but I gave them a purchase date of within a year ago. I have a new cx4800 on its way!

hi all I have the same problem with my 4600 but I think it's out of warranty, biggest problem I have is epson obviously knew of the problem and only did anything for those whose printers crapped during the warranty, and then for some didn't do much different my parents had the same printer and epson first sent them a new replacement 4600, second time told them sorry out of warranty, had I knew of this site I would of never let them buuy another epson product, and at this point I don't think I will either, and I have bought epson since 1989 I have recommended it to friends and such but at this point I"m not very happy with thier service, or thier machine. For those of you that got your replacements I'm happy for you and I feel sorry for those of you that are out of warranty, can anybody say RECALL, that is what should of happened with this printer.

ok up date I had found my reciept vie my credit card I used to pay for it and called epson again, and word now is they are going to send me a new printer and told me to keep the old one. guess it's not worth it to them to even try to fix it anymoore - Anonymous
After having messed with inkjet printers for several years now I can say with firm conviction that they are really not worth it. In order to keep heads clean you must use them and clean them which eats up ink. For those mechanically inclined, it is interesting to clean and refill, but after doing it several times it becomes apparent that if you need a company report in color, it pays to go to Kinkos or a professional print shop. If you need photos, it's absolutely cheaper to email photos to Walgreens or Walmart for 19 cents per print.

I got fairly good at refilling my Canon and Epson printers, but now that Samsung and Brother laser printers are linux compatible and under $100, I ditched all my refilling paraphenalia and have now used my Samsung mono laser for about one year and still going strong with the original toner. No more spilled ink, prying open cartridges, messy printers, cleaning cycles, cleaning waste tubes, scotch taping vent holes....blah blah.

I bought one of these printers because I previously owned an Epson which was fantastic. The CX4600 proved to be just the opposite. It is one horribly engineered printer...I did not use it for a couple months and when I came back to use it, I could not get it to print. I used three sets of ink cartridges and a set of special cleaning cartridges, attempting to clean the head, as specified in the Epson manual...and it still would NOT PRINT.
Sunday, Nov 26, I decided I had wasted enough on the PIECE OF JUNK. I literally ripped it apart to get to the "print head," another piece of junk. NOTHING could have unclogged the print head...so where did all that ink and cleaning liquid go? NOWHERE, because the printer is programmed to show ink is being used at a certain rate. The cartridges may still be full but the printer will lead you to believe they are empty. Once they have reached the programmed "empty" level...you cannot use them anymore...the chip on the cartridges is set such that the printer WILL NOT function when even one cartridge is "empty."

I was a BIG fan of Epson inkjet printers until this fiasco with the CX4600. Now I would not even recommend Epson to my WORST ENEMY. Maybe the other manufacturers have their faults also, but hopefully, out there somewhere, is a manufacturer who actually cares about keeping satisfied customers.

Does anyone know of any recourse with the new ink cartridges? I thought of taking them back to Wal-Mart with the receipt and say that Epson said there was a problem with the printer being faulty and for them to just send them back. I hate to be stuck with $70 worth of full cartridges that I just have to throw away. I wish I would have found this site earlier today before I bought the black ink. I am going to try and see if the ink tube is the problem also. I found it, but it doesn't look clogged. I found were it connects to a 45degree angle but not sure if I take that apart or not. Any help would be so appreciated since I am always needing to print something!!! - Gin
I'm not completely sure about Walmart, but I know that Best Buy will take them back with a receipt if you bought the wrong ones, etc. Walmart's return policy is much more relaxed than BB's. I bet they would at least offer to let you exchange them. If you are getting a new 4800 from Epson, I would just exchange your 4600 inks for 4800 inks and keep them until your new ones run out.

Used the number provided and called Epson support. Went through the hoops with Tech trying power on and off, etc., good news is a new printer is on the way. Now believe it or not I purchased three of these losers for my children. Two don't work do you think if I call again I will get another????

I am on my 2nd Epson All-in-one in a school setting. I am the only one who prints with it. Of we course bought it just over a year ago (BTW - to replace one that did EXACTLY the same thing!!) I used it heavily this month for a project the kids were doing. Printed 11 pages perfectly today, then one by one the colors stopped printing - except for blue (the kids all look like Martians!). Did all the usual troubleshooting. Called Epson and they eventually sent me to a web page where I can get another Epson at a discount like an Epson Stylus 5000 for $89.99. Spoke to the 'guy' on the phone quite a while and they seemed to think this was an acceptable solution! In a school we are lucky to get one new printer every couple of years - forget about a new one every year! I told him if my school ran the way that company ran we'd be in real trouble! Any suggestions - except never buy an Epson again??

Saw your posting and hope you can help.
My Epson CX4600 is got lights flashing and an error msg saying
parts at end of service life.

Sorry everyone else is having so many problems. I've loved mine. I do a lot with scanning though. Loved the software that came with it. Really don't want to hassle with getting a new printer.

Most people are not aware about supposed technicians fixing your printer. They do a general cleaning. But they don't tell you about the Reset Codes or Computer Reset Machine they have to plug in to reset your machine. Then they always run good as new...Until the next Need Technician Error and Reset Codes again.

You are the only person I've seen that knows what I'm talking about. I would really appreciate any help you could provide. Even if it's just a link to where the reset codes are.
I don't have the time to go thru all the regular run around.

You can use the SSC service utility to reset the protection counter. This page has the info on the utility and the download link as well. http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html

You should clean or replace the absorber pads at some point.

I am on on my second Epson CX4600. I am completely disgusted with both of them.

So, why did I buy the second one you may ask yourself? I really liked the price of the printer and the features - all in one printer, copy machine, scanner . . . But as you may see in many of the posts in this forum, given a short amout of time, the thing just craps out! I had used some off brand of ink that I think I had purchased at Costco - not realizing that it was not Epson ink. I attributed my problems to the ink. Silly me. It's the printer.

Consider the following -

The ink delivery design of these things is insane. The nozzle is embedded somewhere in the machine and cannot be accessed for cleaning (although I might try after I rip this latest one apart.) I had an HP for many years and the print nozzle/head was a part of the actual ink replatement cartridge - buy a new cartridge, get a new nozzle. Nozzle gets clogged, take out the cartridge and clean it with a little alcohol. Thing stops working, buy a new cartridge. In all cases, the worst thing that can happen is that some of your print jobs come out looking bad and you've wasted some paper - maybe a little ink too. And if you ever remove an Epson cartridge that's still got ink in it, be very careful - it will easily leak out it's contents. My HP cartridges didn't do that, (although I suppose it's possible that all printer cartridges work the same as Epson these days - I bought the HP back in 1996 - it really lasted a long time!)

The ink monitoring design seems suspiciously intended to force you to buy lots and lots of Epson ink. Say you want to print a page of text in black and white. You need to have red ink in red ink the cartridge; can't be empty! You may not need to use any colored ink to print black and white, but you'd better have some ink of all colors in the printer or - No Print!

Also, say for instance the yellow ink nozzle is having problems, you need to clean all of the nozzles. Can't clean just the yellow. Can't use up just the yellow ink, gotta use up all the colors, including black.

The last thing that I tried before giving up on my first CX4600 was to refill the cartridges. This failed miserabley. Perhaps others have been successful. I've learned since that the IC chip needs to be reset. I did not know about this at the time. But I was so frustrated at the amount of ink that I had wasted that I tried the refill approach with a refill kit that I had used in my old HP.

Good luck in your printer search. Wish me luck in mine! Epson is not going to send me a refurbished unit as part of my warranty. I won't accept it.

The main problem I think with the Epson CX4600 is the design of the waste ink tubes. I opened my printer up and the waste ink tubing wraps around some ridiculously tight areas of the printer. It is easy to see how this ink path can mess things up especially with the Durabrite pigment ink which easily clogs in tubing. I guess if you used Dye ink the CX4600 would be less susceptible to clogging but still the path that the ink takes to the waste sponge makes things difficult and the more head cleaning you do the faster that waste sponge and tubing will clog up.
What I did was to route the tubing out the back of the printer into a little plastic bottle. I am hoping that this will prevent the tubing from clogging up because when I first opened up my CX4600 the end of the waste tube was heavily clogged shut with ink. With the waste ink tubing routed out of the back I can easily see if the ink is clogged and possibly clean the tube out with a head cleaning solvent if needed.
The best thing to do with the CX4600 is to NOT use the Durabrite ink cartridges from Epson and order on the internet a refill cartridge system where you can easily add ink to the top of the cartridge. I think that with this printer you will also have to periodically open it up and check the tubing and clean the heads.
I know that it is a big hassle but that is what this printer demands to work correctly. - unknown
I had the same problem. Thanks for the support number tip. They offered to upgrade me to the 4800 for free. It should be here in 5-7 days. They must have had a ton of complaints about the 4600!

My CX4600 was purchased in april of 2005. Died on me obout a month ago. Doesnt print anything, just prints blank. Ive cleaned the printer heads a million times, changed the inkm and nothing. No black, no color, nothing. Will Epson help me out? Should I tell the truth about when it was purchased or just lie??
