The Okidata® 400e drum unit is quite different from it's brother the 400/800. A major
difference lies within the actual technology of the cartridge. The Okidata® 400e does
not have a wiper blade, instead it utilizes a small foam roller that cleans the drum.
The rate of transfer is so good that this cartridge generates no (or very little) waste
toner. Once you know where all the pieces go, this is an easy unit to remanufacture. To
remanufacture this cartridge you will need a Phillips head screwdriver and a small flathead
screwdriver.
Before you start, thoroughly inspect the cartridge's legs. The cartridge rests on four legs
which can easily break off. Once the legs are broken the cartridge will not work properly.
Hold the cartridge so it rests on the four legs and the toner tube is facing away from you.
Begin by removing the toner tube and vacuum all the excess toner from the hopper. Next,
locate and remove the two screws holding the cartridge top in place (Figure 1) then remove
the cover. Note the position of the PCR saddle blocks. You should notice a brass colored
spring on the left hand saddle block and a steel spring on the right hand saddle block.
Make sure during reassembly that the saddle blocks are on the correct sides (Figure 2).
Remove the saddle blocks and the PCR. The small gear on the PCR belongs on the
right hand side. The PCR is cleaned with Nu-Finish® car polish (not wax). Apply a
liberal amount to a lint free cloth and wipe on the PCR. Immediately wipe off with a dry,
lint free cloth making sure the polish does not dry and harden. When finished, set the PCR
aside.
The endplates, located on each side of the cartridge, are the next items you will remove.
One screw towards the center of each endplate holds it in place (Figure 3). The endplates
in turn hold the doctor blade securely in place. On each side of the doctor blade, there is a
small square hole. The endplates each have a square protrusion which fits inside the holes
in the doctor blade. To remove the endplates, simply pry the doctor blade away from the
endplates to free the protrusions (Figure 4). Once the protrusions are free the endplates can
be removed.
The developer roller assembly can now be removed from the cavity. On the left side
of the developer assembly there is a loose gear. Note the position of this gear before
removal (Figure 5). Remove the entire assembly (Figure 6). Do not separate the developer
roller, the doctor blade or any other component of the assembly. Vacuum all the rollers and
the cavity.
Remove the drum and replace if worn. Without a wiper blade, this unit does not have the
friction buildup which causes wear. The OEM drum for this unit should be good for at least
two cycles. Be sure to install the drum so the narrow gear (contact side) is on the right.
The small foam roller which cleans the drum should be the only component left in the shell
(Figure 7). There is no need to remove this roller. Vacuum the roller thoroughly or use

compressed air and blow off any excess toner. It is important that this roller is free from
all waste toner.
If this roller becomes saturated with waste toner it will lose its cleaning capabilities and
backgrounding will occur.
Install the drum with the narrow gear to the right, the same side as the gear on the
foam cleaning roller. Install the PCR with the gear to the right. The saddle block with
the brass spring goes on the left side and the one with the steel spring goes on the
right side.
Install the developer assembly. The foam end pieces fit into the plastic slots on each side
of the toner collection cavity. Place the loose gear back on the left side. Clean the
contacts on the endplate with alcohol and add a small amount of conductive grease to the
area (Figure 8).
To reinstall the endplates, the doctor blade must be tilted away from the protrusions
using the same method as for removal. Make sure the loose gear on the left side remains
in place and meshes with the rest of the gears on that side. Install the top cover with the
two screws. Install a new toner tube and you are finished.
To reset the drum count on the Okidata® OL-400e machine, hold down "the Menu
1/Menu2" button while powering on the machine. Press the "Menu 1/Menu2" button
three times, "Drum Count Reset" should appear in the window. Press the "Enter" button.
The display should read "Drum Count Resetting" then the machine will return to the
ready mode.
