Epson C82 clogged nozzel???

Epson C82 clogged nozzel??? by Amy (4/15/03 2:50 PM) reply + / -
I bought a brand new Epson C82 in November 2002 and it ran fine. I had left it on at all times and so the heads became clogged and I called Epson and they send me out a brand new replacement (warranty covered it since I had only had it for a few months). They said the problem probably occured because the printer was left on all the times so when I got the 2nd printer I only turn it on right before printing and then turn it off and keep all covers closed. I noticed the other day that it was starting not to print in magenta and yellow. From before when I had problems I was told by Epson to run serveral head cleaning cycles and that should fix the problem (but it didn't - they made me send it back and then sent a new one). So this time I also ran several head cleaning cycles. It fixed the magenta problem and the yellow is a little better but not like it should be. When I run the head cleaning and then print nozzel check, everything is fine but the yellow, but when I print something in black and white sometimes a line or 2 of the black text has a small white line through it even though when I run a head cleaning and then print nozzel check the black looks perfect and the black ink tank is 1/2 full. I have not recently changed ink or anything. This is only the 2nd set of ink cartidges that I have had in it since getting the new printer from Epson after sending the other 1 back. I'm just wondering what I can do to fix the problem instead of calling Epson again and having to go through all that again (I'm not even sure they would do it again since they have done it once already). Is there anything that I can do on my own (that will not damage the printer - I have not done anything but head cleaning cycles) to fix my printer?

Thank you in advance,
Amy Robison

AMY: Sounds like you have been having some really bad luck with your Epson C82 Printers. Its even harder to believe that your having the same basic problems on what seems like three different printers. As an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", there's only so much INFORMATION and HELP that I can legally give, but generally I have not seen any real problems on the C82's in my service area [almost all of Northern Calif., into Oregon and Nevada]. I don't think leaving your printer on all the time would be a problem, unless you happen to have POWER PROBLEMS in your area. Power is the only thing I can think of that maybe affecting all three printers, but its probably a long shot at best...POWER RELATED QUESTIONS: Do you have any power problems in your area, that you are aware of? Do you have your printer plugged directly into a 3-prong outlet, or do you have to use an adaptor to plug into the old style 2-prong, non-grounded style outlets? Do you have to keep resetting any breakers in your house or apartment? Do you have your printer plugged into a "UPS System/Battery Back-up System", by any chance? Do you have flourescent light fixtures near your printer that may be flickering quite often? Do you use a portable heater that may be plugged into the same outlet? Do you have a microwave oven or refrigerator plugged into the same wall circuit by any chance?...As to other possible problems, there's not many that I can think of outside of the printer itself. When you get "white lines/void lines" thru the black or color bars on a "nozzle test", its normally either the ink cartridge or the printer. Do you happen to be running a lot of heavy fill pictures in either black or color? I guess it's possible that you could be using up the ink faster than the cartridge can put it into the printer. Usually you will notice that the first several pictures or heavy fill pages will come out ok, then quality will start to deteriorate. Thats normally when the "white lines/void lines" start showing up thru the blacks or colors. Then you have to do the "printhead cleaning cycles" and "nozzle tests" to correct the problem. I'm sorry, this info is probably not very helpful...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Denny, I too have had the exact same problems with my C82. I am currently on my third replacement. This one is now randomly printing a single line of text that looks like it is in italics. I have cleaned it 10 times and run nozzle check everytime. The nozzle check looks fine but it continues to do the italic thing. I have updated the driver also. I have not had any power related problems in my office and I print mostly text. I am almost to the point of junking it and trying a laser. I have 5 other Epson Stylus in my office and they are great!

BILL & AMY: I'm sorry, but there's nothing else I can think of that might help...My apologies for not having replied to your message sooner and for this general text saved message...My mother, who leaves about 300 miles from me, had a bad stroke on 4/22 and I had to leave work. I did not even return to work until monday 4/28. I will only be at work for a few days and then have to leave again because of many pressing family matters. I will not be able to help much if any on the "printer repair site", for possibly a few weeks or so. If I have any spare time at all before I leave, I will try to address/answer any questions/problems you have already posted. Again my apologies and I hope that someone else may be able to help you further until I can once again help in my spare time...Good Luck! Denny Conway

BILL: I'm sorry, but I'm not framiliar with the problem as you call it the ITALIC THING. If your problem is JIBBERISH or weird characters and symbols being printed, then you may have a communication related problem. Normally corrupted drivers, failing printer cable, or a software problem in your PC...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Epsons obsession with small droplet size ie 2 picoliter and also the use of pigment inks must not be helping
High ambient room temps and being to close to a heater will not help
A daily nozzle pattern check if freq printing is not the norm will help too
I prefer HP and refilling its troble free

I have the same problem. I bought a C82 last week and have problems printing in magenta and yellow. I tried running several times the head cleaning cycle, just to run out of ink and change them all again.

when i turn my computer on it automatically start printing weird text and won't stop. and when i try to print real clear text it won't print it continues to print 1 or two lines of some text that does not make since what can i do.

Re: Epson C82 clogged nozzel??? by Denny Conway (7/9/03 2:02 PM) reply + / -
Sabrina: GENERAL INFORMATION ON "JIBBERISH" [strange symbols and characters], OR "COMMUNICATION ERRORS/PROBLEMS": When a printer prints "jibberish", or has communication problems, its usually caused by: #1 a bad parallel printer cable [old cable/poor quality cable: not bi-directional printer cable, or not IEEE-1284 rated cable. Inexpensive parallel cables are not usually shielded enough and are not always bi-directional]...TECH NOTE: If you are using a USB CABLE, you will usually you have less communication problems caused by a bad or corrupted USB cable, but its possible..#2 bad printer drivers: printer drivers are usually available online from EPSON and HP at no charge; remove/de-install your old printer drivers and then go online and download the newest drivers available for your printer. If you use your old CD that came with your printer, then your not getting the latest changes/updates available free from Epson or HP. There are more steps involved with correctly installing USB DRIVERS and if not done correctly can cause additional problems. Epson has in-depth information available that I can post if you let me know thru this "printer repair site"...#3 It's possible that the actual SOFTWARE you are using to do a print job from, may be causing problems [Word, Office, Excel, etc]. You can try using a different software to print from and see if your problem goes away. If it does, then you may need to have your software removed and reinstalled. It's possible that something may have corrupted it and is causing problems...#4 Its possible that internal settings on your PC may be not set correctly, but that would normally require a PC trained person to check your system and make changes [BIOS settings]...#5 Its also possible that a VIRUS can cause problems with printers. Even if you have a virus protection program installed on your PC, it has to be updated regularly to protect against possible new, or modified virus'...#6 If new drivers [free] & a new good quality printer cable [fairly inexpensive], do not cure your problem, then its probably time to have your PC/System checked for possible problems. The other thing you can try is to actually connect your printer to a different PC/System, then load the correct DRIVERS and connect your printer cable and run some print jobs. If your printer, cable and drivers work ok on a different PC/System, then you pretty much know the problem is normally in your PC/System...#7 Sometimes the Logic Board, built onto/into the printers "Main PCB/Board", just goes bad, but not very often. As a new PCB costs quite a bit, its better to put that money into a new printer, as the prices have come down so much in the last couple of years...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Ricardo: If you just bought your "C82", then its under warranty thru Epson and you don't have to worry about whats wrong with it. Just call "Epson Customer Relations Department" at 562-276-1311 and they will arrange for a WHOLE UNIT EXCHANGE for you. Epson will send you a replacement printer, with a return shipping label and instructions for the return of the defective printer to them...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: Epson C82 clogged nozzel??? by jimmypoo (7/9/03 4:13 PM) reply + / -
But here is one question that remains:

In my case, the printer was fine - but it had a 2 month period of non-use, so the trouble started.

So the question is.... WHAT is the PROPER solvent for this printer?

I can GUESS at just about everything, but what is ACCEPTED as something OK to let be sucked into the heads that will dissolve the ink away and NOT the printer?

Anyone know?

I hate going through that "you pay for the printer until we get your old one back" bullshiite.

Re: Epson C82 clogged nozzel??? by Denny Conway (7/9/03 5:14 PM) reply + / -
Jimmy: As an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", there's only so much information and help that I can legally give...FIRST: You don't have to pay for the replacement printer if you let your local "Epson Authorized Service Dealer" handle the exchange for you. You take the printer in and the dealer files the neccessary warranty claim. Approximatly 3 to 5 days later your replacement printer comes in and you can pick it up. Seeing as its not the printers fault that you did not use it for two months and the ink in the nozzles dried up and clogged, it seems like the easy way to go. The other method is the one where you are required to secure the shipment of the replacement printer with a credit card, over the phone with the "Epson Customer Relations Department". The replacement printer is then sent directly to your home or business. Because some people did not return the defective printer to Epson in the past, they ruined it for everyone... SECOND: There are only two fluids to use safely: #1: The best fluid is the RED Epson Printhead Cleaning Fluid, #2: Water and hot water is even better [most inks are water soluable]. It's possible that you may even have an actual HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem], or your printhead might just be clogged. Epsons need to be used often to keep the tiny printhead nozzles open. If you happen to be using refilled or non-Epson ink cartridges then its even worse on the printhead assemblies and you may not actually be able get the printhead assembly to work again. You might want to try using the "printhead cleaning kit", available through the home page on "fixyourownprinter.com" and see if you can get the printhead nozzles to open up again. Its around $10.00 and includes a syringe and the RED Epson Printhead Cleaning Solution, which is the best cleaning fluid to use, by far. This fluid is capable of disolving most clogs, especially if you use Epson inks. If it does not work, then its generally time to replace the printhead or the printer. Although the kit is not designed for the "C80/C82" series printers or some of the other newer Epson Ink Jet Style Printers, the red fluid and syringe can still be used the same way. The main difference is the instruction for the FELT PAD/CAP ASSEMBLY. The C80/C82 series and newer printers, use a different stlye "cap assembly" that does not use a felt pad, so you have to ignore that portion of the instructions...REMEMBER: The "nozzles" inside the printhead assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force. Damage can even occur when you are using the correct cleaning method: the RED Epson Printhead Cleaning Solution and Syringe, found in the "printhead cleaning kit" sold off the printer repair site. If you try to force the fluids thru the nozzle, the nozzles can be seriously damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for several hours, to try and dissolve the clog....Good Luck! Denny Conway

I have had similar printing problems with seemingly clogged jets and continued degradation of print quality until..no printing of anything. Removal of the cover with four screws and 4 plastic latches revealed a tube on the cleaning unit that had fallen off. Apparently the printer cleans the head by squirting out ink onto a spongelike pad then the ink is suctioned down and away into the bowels of the machine via a drain tube. There is a size discrepancy between the pad tray and the suction tube so an adapter is used. The adapter does not hold the rubber tubing firmly and a hose clamp was needed. I stole the hose clamp off the other end of the drain tube and used that but the jets need some serious cleaning since only half the jets work.

Re: Epson C82 clogged nozzel??? by jagesh (7/19/03 8:20 PM) reply + / -
OK I fixed it! Put alcohol in the sponge where the nozzles rest. You have to turn off the power.
Slide the cartridge assembly to the left by pulling the black lever that holds the ink cartridge assembly forward.
It is on the left front side just under a black tab of plastic that is on the cartridge assembly.
Slide the cartridge assembly to the left.
Get rubbing alcohol and soak that sponge till it is filled so that the clogged jets get saturated when they are resting on the sponge. Move the cartridge assembly back over the alcohol and let it soak for an hour or two.
Run one cleaning cycle.
Print a test page.
If this is too complicated, by all means take the printer to a professional.
BTW my problem was due to a manufacturing or design error with poorly fitting tubing and not enough hose clamps.

I'm totally bummed out.

I just got an Epson c82 yesterday. Worked fine until today, when the black and magenta suddenly quit printing. The black started to print again on it's own, but the magenta won't, even after repeated nozzle cleaning (at the expense of much ink of course.) So much for the "cost savings" of the individual ink cartridges.

The only thing left to do, from I can tell from the manual, is to wait overnight, for the ink to soften, and try again. This is unacceptable. What if I have a lot of printing to do? I've only had the printer and the cartridges for 24 hours now and apparently it's all ready clogged to the point of being useless.

Has anyone else had this sort of problem after only having the printer for such a short time? I can understand it after having it for a few months and not using it, but this is ridiculous.

I have another Epson, a 2000P, that uses pigmented inks, and I haven't run into this problem. I've only had to clean the nozzles once after having it for over a year and a half.

I'm really disappointed. I just returned an HP 3820 because I had ink fading problems with it on glossy paper (which didn't happen with my old HP 720 on the same exact paper.) I guess the Epson prints won't fade, that is, if I can get the darn thing to print right! Thing is, this time, I'm stuck with it. The internet place I bought it from will only exchange it. I'm beginning to wish I bought an HP 5550 instead, but with my luck lately, I'll probably get a defective one of those.

How I wish my old HP 720 hadn't died. It worked fine for years, had very few problems, made good prints, too. Good enough for my purposes. <sigh>

Thanks for any input!

Wyorat: As an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", there's only so much information and help that I can legally give. There's of course no way for me to actually know whats wrong with your printer. It could be a problem that resulted from rough handling during shipping. It could even be a possible HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem], such as a defective printhead assembly, or even bad cartridges. I would not even worry about what went wrong. Just get an exchange from the company you bought it from. If you don't want to deal with the company you bought it from, just call "Epson Customer Relations" @ 562-276-1311. You can file a warranty claim thru Epson over the phone. Epson will then send you a "Whole Unit Exchange" [replacement printer] thru UPS, in about 3 to 5 days and you will get new cartridges as well. Instructions come with the replacement printer on the return of the defective printer. Basically, you will have to put your defective printer into the box that you removed the replacement printer from. You then seal the box up and apply the shipping label that comes with the replacement printer. Then simply call UPS to come by and pick up the box for return to Epson...Denny Conway

I purchased four C82 Printers for a busy real estate office. 2 of the 4 have exactly the same problems as indicated in other emails. The black and magenta quit printing. I called Epson, they put it thru the 3 cleaning cycles and then what? They tell me to send it back and they will send us a new one. It has to be a design problem and I feel the other 2 will go out. I have tried running the nozzle check every morning on each, but that didn't make a difference at all. I think Epson should put something in troubleshooting about this, as it seems to be a problem in the C82's and most consumers do not know where to go on the net to get solutions.

Re: Epson C82 clogged nozzel??? by Denny Conway (7/24/03 11:46 AM) reply + / -
Julie: As an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", there's only so much information and help that I can legally give. There's of course no way for me to actually know whats wrong with your printer, but you should have your printers replaced while they are under warranty. Epson will send you a "Whole Unit Exchange" with new ink cartridges, if you call the "Epson Customer Relations" department at 562-276-1311. If you prefer, you can take your printers into a local "Epson Authorized Service Dealer" and they can handle the exchange for you. It usually takes about 3 to 5 days on the average...Good Luck! Denny Conway ...P.S. TO ELIMINATE POSSIBLE PROBLEMS: Be sure you are using Epson Ink Cartridges. Any other ink is the wrong ink and can and usually will, cause problems. Be sure that you only turn your printer OFF and ON by using the printers On/Off Switch. Do not turn off a main switch on a Surge Suppressor or Power Strip, to shut down your printer. That will usually cause damage to the "printhead assembly". Be sure you don't have possible power problems, or are using very old UNGROUNDED OUTLETS.

PLEASE!!! PLEASE!!! Any knew problems on Epson Printers, start your own NEW POSTING on your own personal message board, rather than tack your problem onto someone else's message board...IT'S EASY: Just go to the "fixyourownprinter.com" web-site and under MESSAGE BOARD, click-on PRINTER REPAIR FORUM. The first page will open up; scroll down to bottom of the page; in the bottom left corner is "click here to post a new message". Now you can post your printers problem...When you get to many different problems posted on the first person's board, its hard to follow and hard to keep scrolling back to find a particular problem. It's possible no one may actually help you because they did not read the board you attached your problem to. Sometimes we may just assume that your information was just a reply to that origional posting by the first person on that board and not even read your message. REMEMBER: The best chance for help is when you open your own individual message board, listing your problem in as much detail as possible. Your chances of having someone help you, including me if I have the time, will normally be better...TECH NOTE: If you decide not to open your own message board, then don't be surprised if no one actually responds to your posted problem. After all, you did just attach your problem onto someone else's origional board...Thank You! & Good Luck! Denny Conway

If I am I am going to buy an HP. Does
anyone have a recommendation for a
good HP that just works.

c82: Most of the Epson warranties are for one year. Check your purchase date and if its under the warranty period, then just call the "Epson Customer Relations Department" at 1-562-276-1311 and file a warranty claim. If verified as under warranty, they will create a WHOLE UNIT EXCHANGE and mail you a replacement printer in exchange for your old printer. You may need PROOF OF PURCHASE [your receipt or invoice copy] if you did not register you warranty on your printer...Good Luck! Denny Conway

I bought an Epson C82 for my husband's computer at home for Christmas. He doesn't print a lot and just finally needed the black and magenta replaced. The printer claims the magenta cartridge is not correct and I should be using a genuine Epson magenta cartridge and then maddeningly won't print anything even in black. What would make it think that my genuine cartridge is not genuine. If I buy another ink cartridge which I have to drive an hour away to buy one...will I be throwing the money away or do I assume I just have a defective cartridge.

Re: Epson C82 clogged nozzel??? by Denny Conway (8/19/03 9:45 AM) reply + / -
Ellen: No way for me to actually know, but its possible that you just have a bad/defective cartridge. If you still have the old cartridge, then try reinstalling it and see if it gets the same message. I relalize that the old cartridge is empty or its almost empty, but you may be able to use it for a test. If the old cartridge does not get the same message, then I would guess there's something wrong with the new cartridge, or its the wrong cartridge. CHECK THE CARTRIDGE NUMBER OF THE NEW "MAGENTA CARTRIDGE" THAT YOU INSTALLED AND REMEMBER: The "C82" uses magenta cartridge #T042320 and the "C80" uses magenta cartridge #T032320: THEY ARE DIFFERENT CARTRIDGES. The "C82" and the "C80" both use black cartridge #T032120: THEY USE THE SAME BLACK CARTRIDGE. Its real easy to assume the magenta cartridges are the same in both printers, but they will not work in the wrong printer...Reply back and let me know thru this "printer repair site" if that was your problem or not...Good Luck! Re: Epson C82 clogged nozzel??? by Tim (8/27/03 11:42 AM) reply + / -
When I called Epson today about my clogged nozzels (I have had 2 C82s replaced already for the same problem) they told me that I must turn the printer off everyday and better, after each time we use the printer (my printer is on 24/7). Further, they said that they would make a note in my file that they told me to do this ( I guess as a theat - do what we say or else).

So, not finding anything in the manual about turning the printer off on some schedual, what is the correct wisdom? Should the C82 be turned off daily or worse, after each print job?

If so, why doesn't Epson tell us that in the maual (not as a threat when problems come up)?

The C82 is used all day long to print invoices and lots of other things, so it does not sit long between use.

Anyone else have success with the alcohol solution noted on this list?

We have 3 other Epson models and we never turn them off either.

Thanks. Tim

Hi - we have a user with an Epson C82 who has this sat ontop of his pc on the desk. Would this have a detrimental effect on the printer i.e. causing the ink to dry up/blockages? The ink red light just constantly stays on, despite changing all the ink cartridges twice. We cant do print head cleaning, realignments or any tests as the printer just will not print. The printer is left on all day. Should Epsom C82's be switched off when not in use, should they be situated in a particular place, would the cleaning kit be of use?

Hi my name is Bitter... and I too have a crappy Epson c82! My printer would work great until it got low on ink and then I would have to clean it 5 times and still only get purplish scratchy font. Finally I would replace the ink cartridges to find out it prints nothing. I thought perhaps it was just me but looking at all these post looks like it's the printer. Quite frankly I am tired of getting a printer every 4 months. (They are currently sending me my second) My year warranty is coming up in a few months which means if I get yet another faulty printer I am stuck paying the bill. Perhaps Epson needs to re look at their C82's and maybe stop selling them... I would like to support Epson but I'm tired of getting crap.

Whoa, after reading this message board I will change my mind about Epson. I have praised and brought Epson printers for the last 8 years from the Stylus 640 to the infamous C82 and I am having the same problem(s) reported with the clogged nozzles. I am still under warranty but from what I am reading I will get just another problem when I get the replacement.

There's of course no way for me to actually know whats wrong with your printer and it's even possble that you may even have an actual HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem]. Normally when I see that type of problem, the black text printing usually comes out ok and just color printing causes the bands/lines to appear. Its usually caused by either a bad "Printhead Assembly" and or a failing "Main Board Assembly". The main board sends electrical signals to each nozzle, telling them when to fire, as each color is needed, or of course black. Sometimes when the board is bad it just sends signals at the wrong time, or even sends signals when it should not have sent them. The printhead receives those signals and then fires the printhead nozzles as they are needed. Sometimes those signals get messed up when the printhead assembly is going bad, or the nozzles can even fire when there is actually no signal sent to them. Unfortunatly, there's no way to really know for sure, but either part is normally not economical to replace. You can usually buy a new printer cheaper than you can have your old printer repaired for...If you happen to use Non-Epson Inks or Ink Cartridges, then its very possible that could be the cause of your problem. No matter what anyone says, all blacks and colors are not the same. Thats why all companies patient the formulas for there inks. Epson has many different formulas just for its black ink, for all the different Epson Printers, let alone for their colored inks. Generally if you are using non Epson Ink Cartridges, you are using the wrong ink for your printer. Sooner or later you will have some type of problems, almost everyone does. Sometimes using the wrong ink, can actually damage the "Printhead Assembly"...Even if you were actually using Epson Ink Cartridges, its possible that something just went wrong in the printhead assembly or the main board assembly. There's really not a lot you can really try, except possibly replacing your color cartridge with a new Epson Cartridge. If that does not help, you could try using a "Printhead Cleaning Kit", but its probably a long shot at best and normally it does not change the banding type problem. I'm sorry that I really can't help you further and that I really had no good news for you...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Help! I've replaced under warranty one Epson C82 -- terrific service...and new one worked fine...and yes, was abour these printer cartridge issues also.

Now - the new one is 3 months old, worked like a dream...no hitches at all. Today it likes the new replacement cartridge it just received (no blinking lights, all seems as usual) however - regardless of what I do and I'm infomred about this, I cannot get it to print. I get no error messages of any nature -- it just will not open to 'receive' the signal to print via my wireless setup that has worked flawlessly with it for 3 months until today. I know how to 'open' the channel for my wireless connection with it to work. I know how to troubleshoot this end of it and get no indicator other than it seems to think it is connecting.

I know about handling my Mac Airport system with it, I know to turn off the printer and turn it back on, I know about the value of rebooting my Mac OS-X 2.x system. Nothing changed - nothing - other than changing one Epson cartridge for the same color new Epson cartridge -- which it took right in like usual.

Now it simply refuses to receive printing content.

I get NO error message. And I get no print. The printer cue is working fine - and everything is all stacked up in there waiting. I know how to put those files on hold, resume, and re-start them printing -- when the channel is open to receive them. None of the usual trouble-shooting methods make any headway though.

Now -- here's something else -- where do I download a printing utility that will actually give me the option to clean printer heads and all this. Given it will be two days tomorrow since i successfully printed by in the morning, and even having the printer on all the time -- i may need those by then if this starts to dry out from lack of use given it is usually printing off and on all day.

I know how to use the Print Center in Mac OS-X systems and I find Epson Printer Utility file installed. However, it's not bringing up evidence of any installed printer on the system now either. I'm wondering if this is the problem --and if it is just coincidental it needed a simultaneous ink cartridge change out and maybe the driver is the culprit though I've had no crashes or anything to corrupt it.'

Is there a shareware Epson utility for the C82 that will bring up menus for choices for cleaning the heads and testing for the color availabilities and all that? I've seen my son use that on this computer for me before but I do not find any option to bring that up with the Epson C82 driver software I have and while I see a printer utility installed - it does not offer this option either.

Re: Epson C82 clogged nozzel??? by Denny Conway (10/10/03 10:27 AM) reply + / -
Sherry...A "C82" uses the same black cartridge as a "C80", but different color cartridges, so always be sure to check the numbers. Its always possible that the New Epson Cartridge you installed is either the wrong cartridge or a bad cartridge, but it would normally cause an Ink Error Light/Led to come on and you said that "no blinking lights, all seems as usual"...JUST TO LET YOU KNOW: I'm sorry, but I only work on the actual printers and not on Software, Computer Systems or PC's. The company that I work for, does not work on or even support Mac Systems. Probably the only possible help would be directly from Epson Technical Support at 1-562-276-1300. If your printer is still under warranty, then there is normally no charge involved to talk with a service technician...Any available Printer Drivers or Status Monitor Utilities that are available from Epson for your Computer System, would be found on the Epson web-site at " http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/index.jsp ". You would look under DRIVERS & SUPPORT and then check under DRIVERS & DOWNLOADS for whats available...The only thing I could even suggest, would to disconnect your Printer Cable from your printer and try running a "Stand Alone Printer Test", to see if your printer is working normally or not. The printer cable would be unhooked from the back of the printer and the power cord would still be plugged in to the wall as normal. With paper loaded, turn the printer off for 10 seconds or so, to clear out any remaining DATA or Information that may still have been in the printers system, from when your Computer System was previously connected. Now reach over and turn the printer on as normal and the printer should come on and go to a normal Ready Condition, with no Error Lights on. If you get an Error Light on, then you know you have a problem in your printer. If there are no Error Lights on, then you want to run your printers "Internal Epson Self-Test Page", directly from the printer itself. As not all Epson Printers are always the same, you should refer to your User's Manual/Owners Manual for the correct procedure on how to run your printers Self-Test Page. Normally [on most models] you simply reach over and hold-in on the Paper Button, while you reach over and turn the Power Button back on, as normal. Continue to hold in on the paper button for about 3 to 5 seconds, but release the power button after turning your printer on. Release the paper button once you can hear and see the printer starting to initialize and start to pull-in a piece of paper. The printer will print out an Internal Epson Self-Test Copy, which will also have a "Nozzle Test" on it. If everything is working correctly in the printers Paper Feed Assembly and Carriage Assembly/Cartridge Assembly, the self-test copy should be printed out and correctly fed thru the printer. AS A GENERAL RULE: If the self-test page prints out correctly, then usually your printer is working normally. This does not mean your printer may not be dirty, or have another service related problem, or even bad or low cartridges. It just means the printer is basically working normally as far as the internal tests go. If your printer is working ok, then your problem could be in your Computer System/PC: bad drivers, bad printer cable, bad software, incorrect internal Computer System/PC settings, possible hardware problems [parts problems], etc. I'm sorry, but as I don't work on Computer Systems/PC's, I can't really help you with those type problems. Remember that this is actually a Printer Repair Site and you may need help from a Computer Technician, rather than a Printer Technician. If the self-test does not print out normally, then you can assume the problem is in your printer. Usually that would be a problem in the "Logic Board/Main Board Assembly" and unfortunatly, that is not normally economical to replace. You can usually buy a new printer cheaper, then having your old printer repaired...Another test would be to actually connect your printer to a different Computer System/PC [like a friends], load the correct Printer Drivers, connect your Printer Cable and then try running a few print jobs from that other system. If your printer prints out ok on a different system, then you would know that you probably have a problem in your system. On the other hand, if your printer does not work on the other system either, then you could assume that the problem was in the printer...Good Luck! Denny Conway

the problem with magenta is that magenta cartridge is incorrectly inserted in carriage - the cartridge is not filled with air (at the side of cartridge there's a pin which could make a hole into a PVC) - check this if that pin made a hole in to that PVC

Thanks to all of you who responded to my message about my mysteriously non-receiving wireless wonder of a C82.

I have managed to lose my Epson manual in all this -- so I need to know what the commands are for the following -- plus if several are essentially going to perform the same function or if these are 3 different functions?

<<A daily nozzle pattern check>>
(how to execute this?)

<<repeated nozzle cleaning>>
(how to execute this?)

>>tried running several times the head cleaning cycle>>
(how to execute this?)

As to my other situation:
For NO known reason, I'm once again wirelessly transmitting to this C82 just fine, HAVE determined the culprit though I'm getting NO signals from the printer about it - must be a defective black cartridge. No 'out of ink' lights lighing up, going through the printing motions as if all is fine -- and producing blank paper via 'Black' as an option to print. Seems to print much better if I select Color as the option to print though.

I believe now that I am transmitting again it may be as simple as a fresh ink cartridge.

My next question:
How is it that Epson produces a printer that creates this much chaos?? With all these reported issues and all this replacement they do -- how can it possibly serve a company to have this 'touchy' an ink situation??

What do we do -- just all go back to HP -- given they just do not have this same history at all insofar as I can tell...??

Sherry: As an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", there's only so much information and help that I can legally give. Some of your questions are or should be directed towards Epson Company, but they will never read those questions or any messages off any Printer Repair Site. I can tell you that most of the problems people have are caused by something they did, or did not do and are not always the printers fault. SOME EXAMPLES: Refilling your own cartridges, or having them refilled, buying Third-Party ink or Generic ink [Non-Epson Ink or Ink Cartridges is the wrong ink and can cause problems and sometimes even damage], removing the ink cartridge and then reinstalling it on older models of Epson Ink Jet Printers [resets internal ink counter automatically and your printer will not know when the ink actually runs out and usually clogs], never cleaning and servicing your printer [dust, dirt, lint and hair cause problems and wear], not using your printer for long periods of time [ink dries out in the nozzles and can cause clogs], not keeping your printer covered up when its turned off and you are not using it [help stop the dust, dirt, lint and hair from collecting inside your printer and causing problems], or not turning your printer OFF & ON by using the printers ON/OFF Switch [using a main switch on a Power Strip or Surge Protector, can damage the printhead assembly]. No matter what anyone says, all blacks and colors are not the same. Thats why all companies patient the formulas for there inks. Epson has many different formulas just for its black ink, for all the different Epson Printers, let alone for their colored inks. Generally if you are using non Epson Ink Cartridges, or refilling your old cartridges, you are using the wrong ink for your printer and sooner or later you will have some type of problems, almost everyone does. Sometimes using the wrong ink, can actually damage the "Printhead Assembly", so you are taking your chances by using Third-Party or Generic ink cartridges, or even by refilling your old cartridges. Epsons use a completely different printhead inking system than most other brands of printers and correct Epson ink formulation is vital. Those printheads are one of the reasons that the Epson Printers make such quality color prints. Printer manufacters do not make available their ink formulation and in most cases, the formulation is patented. Any difference in the ink formulation can clog the small printhead nozzles or damage other critical components...You can go to the Epson.com web-site at http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCooki e=yes&infoType=Doc&oid=14417&prodoid=22708391&category=Products&menuSp ec=15 and look under REFERENCE GUIDE and see Usage Instructions, Options and other available information on your particular model of printer from Epson Company...Denny Conway

Hi, Denny...i've been using all Epson cartridges...and the printer is under 1 month old...and has had no time, really, to collect interfering dust, etc. it's in an office - good environment.

since we started this exchange though -- I did backtrack. only new thing changed was i had installed a new Epson black cartridge. the system did not signal a problem-- but in desperation since I did need it to PRINT -- i did change it to yet another brand new Epson cartridge.

Eureka! It did like this one -- and interesting thing...though I was getting no error lights at all before or after with either the old brand-new one or the new brand new Epson black -- my printer is now working fine and is receiving the data wirelessly and all is right again with its C82 world.

However -- I know for sure this is my LAST Epson printer...and I'm going back to HP from now on where I speak the language without the hassle.

Thanks for your time. And...I did find my Epson manual through all this...and have now read it. ;-)

Guess what? It is starting the same old s__t.
Here's to you, Epson....my one finger salute. You deserve more for your innovative designs but
we wouldn't want you to put yourself out and try to re-engineer the unique printer you are peddling to the masses. Take note, all of you future C84 purchasers. Buyer beware.

If you don't really care if they actually know or not, then at least you can release your frustrations thru this site, so I hope that helps...Denny Conway

I too have this problem. My c82 is out of warranty and It would likely cost more to fix it than to but a new printer. I want to go to Epson and throw this through the front window of the CEOs BMW. What a hunk of crap. It worked great for about 6 months and now I have this clogging problem. All of this BS about using your EPSON frequently is a load of crap. We can land a man on the moon, but these fools cannot even get a printer that won't clog up. I had a Canon for 3 years and never had any clogging problems. I will never ever by anything from EPSON again. I am going out to get an HP today.

I purchased 3 of these C82's for a small business, plus one for my home. Guess what - all 4 of them are clogged. One of my biggest frustrations is how the Epson technicians treat every call as if you are a moron - "...OK, let's try cleaning it one more tme...", as if running a cleaning routine for the 10th time might just make a difference. They know this product has a problem, but they are taught to put it back on the consumer with comments like "You leave your printer on 24x7 ?!?" Of course I do - I never had a problem with doing that before I bought this C82 crap...

This forum has been a great place to warn the public about these printers. I agree with Jeff - no more Epsons!

Re: Epson C82 clogged nozzel??? by Blackbeard (1/18/05 1:54 PM) reply + / -
I have three of these printers and never had a problem that a cleaning and alignment did not fix. The reason I have three, is because they were on sale before the C84 came out and it was cheaper to buy a printer than cartridges for the old printer...solved the problem of networking to be able to print, just put one at each terminal.

But now my one printer is not printing, I am going to take some alcohol to it and try it again tomorrow, but it may have bit the dust...I will buy another cheap printer to replace it and be happy...never used anything but Epson cartridges in it, but I am guilty of turning it off by power strip...Life goes on...

Blackbeard: You might want to check out the "Dura Brite Blank Output Information Page", for the "CX82", "CX5200" & "CX64/C84" models, at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/duraink.html . It seems like most of the problems are not actually related to clogging, or even a bad or empty ink cartridge, but is usually more of a Hardware/Parts Failure, but no way for me to really know. The most common failure seems to happen most of the time, just by simply repacing the ink cartridges, or simply happens during normal use of the printer. The most common problem found on some of the newer "C" & "CX" printers, is the tubing on the cap assembly becomes disconnected. The cap assembly can't clean the print head if the tube is detached. That information page may be of some help on your printers possible problem, if that tube has actually come off. I know this information does not really give you that much to go on, but I felt you should know about this common problem, just in case it happens to apply in your case...Good Luck! Denny Conway

ADVICE, NEVER EVER BUY EPSON AGAIN!!!

Re: Epson C82 clogged nozzel??? by Denny Conway (1/25/05 5:34 PM) reply + / -
Nigel: Unfortunatly, its turned into a disposable world anymore, even if we don't agree with it or like it. People want and buy inexpensive ink jet printers from almost ALL MANUFACTORS, at a tremendous rate. The small inexpensive ink jet printer, is basically reguarded as being more or less disposable in the Printer World, especially anything under $100. Unfortunatly, its also starting to look like most printers under $150 are getting to be more or less disposable, as well. Think about it, you can usually buy a new printer cheaper than you can have your old printer repaired for, or at least close to the price. Today you can almost but a new inexpensive printer, cheaper than you can replace the manufactors ink cartridges for. People just don't want to pay for quality anymore and buy those basically disposable printers by the thousands. So most of the printer manufactors produce the cheap small ink jet printers, just to get in on all those thousands of printer sales. To keep those prices so low, quality is sacrificed and options are given up. Thats one of the reasons some new printers only have a 90 day warranty and it sometimes seems like they are lucky to last that long. Printers were more expensive just a few years ago, but they were also built better and seemed to last longer. It seems like as the selling prices started to come down, so did the quality. I know we get what we pay for, but it's still a shame...Denny Conway

Yep, I too have a clogged-up CX82. I haven't used it for a couple of months and when I tried to use it last night, there was virtually no ink coming out.
Yep, I went through the head cleaning routine many times, to no avail. So I took it apart...
As Denny warned on the 1/18/05, the tube had become disconnected. The whole cleaning assembly was covered in semi-solid ink and the tube itself was blocked with lumps of ink.
That tube then leads into another tube which snakes along the base unit to a reservoir for dead ink. The amount of dried ink there was enough to make you cry!
It is going to be a very messy and difficult job to clean it out, so I shall probably junk it.
As has been mentioned elsewhere, NEVER buy Epson again!!!!

The sad part is for the most part I am a huge Epson fan... I find myself reading this thread and cannot help but find it amusing that I came here because my C82 is having the same issues that everyone lists here, just to see them each told it is not the fault of the printer... If it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck folks.... The printer series is flawed, plain and simple. There probably should have been a recall on this particular problem but I guess they'll just phase them out. oes anybody know a way to fix this problem other then just getting rid of the current symptoms? I'd like to give this printer a real chance efore giving up, but am unwilling to deal with this if it's just going to keep repeating itself.

printer; epson stylus c82
one year old and suspected clogged head
clogged heads??? expanded the ink with repeated nozzel cleans and checks to no avail.

i researched the problemvia the good ol web. after research, i prformed the cleaning task. the dampened paper towel and sliding the print carriage many times untill clean.

I then used the syringe to gently inject the
print heads first with air then distilled water.

during the air injection I noted the resistence and proceeded gently as directed,
when I moved on to the black jet,I noticed there was no simular resistence as experienced with the color jets.

yes the "tube" was found diconnected and what a chore that was to reconnect.

I followed through with the syringe loaded with distilled water and accomplished the cleaning.

upon the restart, I have good color printing, however the black appears to be affected.
some text prints fine then a line down is unreadable.

any suggestions.

would the lack of resistence with the black print head suggest a blown print head???

Re: Epson C82 clogged nozzel??? by Denny Conway (2/22/05 2:26 PM) reply + / -
Mike: Usually a lack of resistance, simply indicates that there is no clog present. If you used any force on the plunger of the syringe, while trying to inject the fluids, that would cause damage to the tiny printhead nozzles. If the black printhead had actually failed, then normally, you would not get any black ink to print out. Either you have a bad ink cartridge, a partial clog in some of the black nozzles, or an actual hardware/part related failure [such as a failing Main Board assembly or Printhead Assembly]. Its even possible when that hose came off that the tiny tube/hose could have become partially clogged and could be causing problems, but no way to know. Usually a clogged hose will stop the ink from printing at all. At this point, I would suggest actually cleaning the underside area and backside area of the printhead assembly. Sometimes a build-up of dust, dirt and lint, could be stuck to the wet ink in that area and possibly causing printing problems. Check for a couple of e-mails from me that should help in that area, in case you want to do the cleaning and at least eliminate that possibility...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: Epson C82 clogged nozzel??? by Denny Conway (2/22/05 2:43 PM) reply + / -
Mike: Once I re-read your origional message again, I could see that you had already cleaned that underside area of the printhead assembly. As you said that you cleaned that area with damp paper towels, until it came out clean, then I doubt that my in-depth cleaning method, will help any further. In that case, you may want to actually try using the "Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution", available through fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kits/epson . I know you used distilled water already, but that Epson Solution is much stronger. If there actually is a partial clog in the black printhead assembly, that solution may dissolve the clog, where water does not always work. This is the same chemical used by Epson Company in their service department and was designed to dissolve most clogs, especially if you were using Epson inks. However, it will only help, if there are actual clogged printhead nozzles. When that web-site opens, click-on "Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution" thats listed for your particular printer. The Epson solution sells for around $10.00 plus shipping and includes a syringe and some Epson printhead cleaning solution. You can try it if you want to and see if you can get those printhead nozzles to fully open up again. IF YOU DECIDE TO, TRY THE "EPSON STYLUS HEAD CLEANING SOLUTION", JUST REMEMBER: The "nozzles" inside the printhead assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force on the plunger of the syringe. Damage can even occur when you are using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution method, if you actually try to force the fluid thru the nozzle. To much force/pressure can damage the little tubes inside the Nozzle Assembly and then it will never work again. One individual printhead nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair. You can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for a day or two, to try and dissolve a possible bad clog. Sometimes you might have to use the fluids several times to be able to dissolve the clog in the printhead nozzles. Sometimes the clog will never dissolve, or it actually damages the nozzles. The longer the clog has been in, the worse it is to remove. Again, if the cleaning fluids don't help, then its generally time to invest in a new printer. In some more expensive printers, you may want to get an estimate to replace the printhead assembly, but as a general rule, its not really economical to do in the smaller Epson Ink Jet style printers. You can generally buy a new small printer cheaper than you can have your old one repaired for. EXAMPLE: The printhead assembly in the "C80" Printer sells for around $120 to $130. There is a REVIEW of the "Printhead Cleaning Solution", as well as general "Printhead Cleaning Instructions", that is available to view at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/EKR.html ...Again, Good Luck! stained fingers...Its too late now, but just so you will know: You should only use the actual "Epson Printhead Cleaning Solution", or "Distilled Water", when cleaning the printhead assembly. Unfortunatly, its already possible that those SOLVENTS you used on the printhead assembly, or even the way you actually used them, could have already caused damage...Here's the general info that I normally send out to people that think they have a possible clog: It's possible that you may even have an actual hardware/parts problem [failing Printhead Assembly or Main Board Assembly], but normally the most common problem is clogging of the Printhead Nozzles, especially if you were actually using Non-Epson Ink Cartridges. You might want to try using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution, available through fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kits/epson , but it will only help, if there is an actual clogged printhead assembly. When it opens, click-on "Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution" thats listed for your particular printer. The Epson solution sells for around $10.00 plus shipping. It includes a syringe and some Epson printhead cleaning solution, which is designed to dissolve most clogs, especially if you were using Epson inks. This is the same chemical used by Epson in their service department. You can try it if you want to and see if you can get the printhead nozzles to open up again, but that will only help if they are actually clogged. It was basically designed by Epson Company for use on their older models of ink jet printers, but people have been using it on the newer models, with success reported. If you remove the "Top Cover Assembly", then you can leave the printhead assembly parked in its normal home position, at the far right side. Then any ink & fluids that are purged during the cleaning, will normally travel thru the cleaning station hoses, to the waste ink pads. If you have the "Print Cartridge Holder Assembly", positioned away from the home position, then you will need to slide strips of paper towels or coffee filters under that assembly, to soak up any expelled ink and fluids, or it can get all over. There is a REVIEW of the "Printhead Cleaning Solution", as well as general "Printhead Cleaning Instructions", that is available to view at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/EKR.html ...Just in case you are trying to actually clean the underside & backside areas of the actual printhead assembly, I will e-mail you my in-depth info on cleaning those areas...Good Luck! As I'm reading this I don't hold out much hope. It does seem to be a common problem. Mine is also not printing magenta. And that one is the only genuine Epson cartridge!!! grrrr. This machine is not old enough to be doing this but the "proof of purchase" is long gone. Get with the program Epson! I'm not using this commercially and I'm not trying to run a home business with it. But I do use it for color printing and now after trying to get the most out of my ink by getting individual cartridges in this machine, I'm screwed. Bad press travells as fast as hitting return. Next time I'll read first. Anyone for Consumer Reports on printers? Better late than never. By the way, have you tried some lemon juice on your fingers?

i miss my HP...........
