KEV: FLASHING LED'S, OR UNKNOWN ERROR MESSAGE: I'm sorry to have to be the person to tell you what your probable problem is. The sorry part is because I'm not able to really help you, but at least you will know what your facing...A "Service Error" where all "LED's/Lights" are blinking at the same time, or where you get an "Unknown Error Message", is normally a "WASTE INK PAD OVERFLOW ERROR". NORMALLY, ON MOST EPSON'S, WHILE THE PRINTER IS IN THIS ERROR CONDITION, IT DISABLES ALL OPERATIONS, INCLUDING DATA COMMUNICATION. ON SOME MODELS YOU CAN STILL USE THE "OPERATIONAL PANEL BUTTONS" SPECIFIED, TO CLEAR THE ERROR ONCE THE PADS HAVE BEEN REPLACED....P.S.: You might want to read the message posted by STEVE on 3/16/2003, under the SUBJECT: "EPSON 580 ERROR FIX"...Please find link for fixing you Epson printer when it says "unknown error return to Dealer" when all it is, is the ink counter has reached a set number. Dealer will charge you £30+ for clicking on a button...http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html .....OR THIS SIMULAR POSTING.......Re: Epson Stylus 480SXU Unknown Error. You can order adjustment program for Epson Stylus Color 580 at http://www.otd.com.ua
You'll receive it in 2 hours after transfer.......
Good Luck! Denny Conway

Will this work on a Mac computer? I work on OS 9.0.3

Re: epson 580 printer by Denny Conway (8/1/03 3:58 PM) reply + / -
Carmel: As an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", there's only so much information and help that I can legally give. I'm not sure what you are actually asking. If you are talking about the UNKNOWN ERROR MESSAGE: Since there is no control panel with buttons or lights on the printer, all the controls are handled through the printer software. You just have to follow the on-screen instructions to control all printing and maintenance functions. It does not normally matter what kind of Computer System you are using. On a few inexpensive models, there is a slightly different procedure to follow. The only way to really know, is to contact those web-sites to find out what information is available from them and if it works on your Mac...IF YOU ARE JUST ASKING IF THE PRINTER WILL WORK ON A MAC: The Epson 580 Printer only uses a USB connection, so if your MAC is can use USB, then the printer can work on your system...I apologize if that was not what you meant, or was not the information that you were looking for on the Epson 580 Printer. I only use a PC and the company that I work for, does not service or support Mac Computers, so I cannot really help you on Mac questions...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Thank you for replying so quickly. The problem I have is that I am getting "unknown error" take to dealer etc. My nearest dealer would probably be in U.K. I live in Ireland lol. Seriously though maybe I would get a dealer in Dublin to fix this for me but it's 11/2 hrs away so I was hoping for a program that could help me with this problem.....cheaper the better...of course..........

Hi again,
Well Denny ty for your linkss but I have tried it and they only supply progs for Windows, I have tried the links from Luis but got a d/l in German which would be ok if it fixed the problem but alas no. I have tried the links from Eric B. d/l'd two of them but neither one will open for me as they are also for windows, do you see the problem? I have searched sites up high and low down, nothing for macs! Anyone with any ideas?

Thx again.

Well sadly I am still left sitting with a perfectly good printer with not a lot of heavy usage out of it and no way to get this problem fixed. I have contacted Epson in the U.K. as this is where our nearest tech support is but they haven't bothered replying to me, maybe they are too embarrassed by their blatant way of trying to get more money out of their customers. This is one they have lost for sure.
I am glad for the pc users that they have had their problems sorted out, good that epson don't get their *cheat* money. Sue me epson, I don't care. I am so disgusted with all this and have passed the word around among my friends NEVER EVER buy Epson.
If I had been told by the store where I bought this printer (PC World, Blanchardstown, Dublin) that this problem would crop up I would never have bought it, but alas the staff there didn't even know which printer would suit a Macintosh computer and were glad to sell me anything. What more can I say!!!!!!!!!

Hi Maeve,
I tried to download the program to a pc last night, even went so far as to go to buy the fix but discovered that it only works on Windows98, so that was a waste of time. Have to find someone with Windows 98 to see if it will work on theirs, don't really know what else to do other than to get the sledgehammer out and give the printer a good banging with it lol. Not that it would make it work but I might derive some satisfaction from it!

I too tried all the above "fixes" but to no avail. It seems that since the damned thing only cost about fifty quid from Asda in the first place, I thought I may just as well buy a new printer. Except that they don't seem to make this particular model any more...of course I found that out just a day after I bought a load of ink for the thing....such is life!

Download this utility

http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html

Once installed you need to configure it closing the main window and right clicking the icon in the tray area, from there choose Configure and select your printer model.
After configuration, select Protection counter -> Reset protection counter, it should be able to put your printer back at work

Re: epson 580 printer by Denny Conway (3/28/05 2:19 PM) reply + / -
Mick...Just to let you know: Simply resetting that "Maintenance Request Error", is only doing part of the job and its possible that you could have additional problems later. The maintenance request error is actually a "Waste Ink Ink Pad Error" and usually your remedy is to replace the waste ink pad/pads with a new one/ones and then reset the "Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter", which of course you already did. If you just reset the counter and don't replace the pads, then your printers old pads will eventually overflow and normally start leaking ink out the bottom of your printer. You can see "Exploded Parts Diagrams" of most Epson Ink Jet Printers and can also check on possible parts ordering, by Compass Micro Inc, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm . Some people actually wash the ink out of the old pads, by holding them under running cold water. Then they simply dry them out and reinstall them back into their printer. The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make...There is a free download of an "Epson Stylus Color 580 Service Manual", from fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/reference/manuals/public/epson . That manual may be of some help to you, in actual disassembly and servicing of those waste ink pads...Denny Conway

Mick: Unfortunatly, "Epson Technical Support Department" will usually not tell you everything. They want you to have your printer serviced by one of their service dealers. You can see those Waste Ink Pads, if you go to the exploded parts diagram, by Compass Micro Inc , at http://www.compassmicro.com/files/SC%20580%20exploded%20diag.pdf [items # 731 & 732 on page #1 of 5]...Denny Conway
