 | HP LaserJet 6L Toner Spill by Brian (2/2/03 7:35 AM) reply | + / - | Hi Moe,
Good to see your site. I used to work on photocopiers, cash registers etc but it been a long time. Is there a decent source of info on laser printers to have get a bit of an update?
I have a Laserjet 6L. During a paper feed removal, it has spilled or dislodged some toner. I had the toner cartridge out before trying to remove the jam so I don't know how it occurred.
The spill causes a dark strip about 1/2 inch wide down the full length of the page. It is so much toner it causes what appears to be bleed through to the back of the page.
Pulling the cover off (as per your archives - I have HP manuals but they aren't a lot of help), I can see toner on the long soft rubber (feed?) roller that goes full width at the rear. How is it best to clean this roller - alcohol (I find medical wipe swabs are very handy).
Secondly, this machine has quite some age on it now and desperately needs a good clean up. Any suggestions on how and, more importantly, what to avoid. I have "canned air", compressor, solvents and anti-static work bench.
Prints have been getting too light with a 1/2 to 1 inch strip down the page lighter still. It is amazing but a new cartridge ended up being signicantly worse in this respect. It was a brand new actual HP brand cartridge.
HP service agent techs is this are are not very interested in low end "consumer" products - "it could be two weeks to even lookm at your printer."
Many thanks for your fine site, I now know where to get parts.
Regards, Brian.

Use compress air to blow the Toner out of the printer. The Roller you are referring to is teh Transfer Roller and please don't touch it with your finger because the oil will make it a lot worse. You could clean it with a DRY lint free cloth. The light stripe could be a result of dirty optic. The toner could have been spilled from the old Toner. IF you open your new toner's shutter and look on the drum, do you see toner residual on it? If you do, chances are your new Toner is bad and bring it back to the store ask for a new one.
Hope this helps. Reagrds. Dewaine

As Dewaine suggested, the light stripe could be a contaminated charge transfer roller or some dust on the optics in the scanner assembly. You'd have to remove the covers to get at it. It sits on top of the printer.
