HP 5P maintenance

HP 5P maintenance by naartjie (7/1/09 8:02 AM) reply + / -
Hello,
My 5P printer has recently started printing grey streaks down the page after a bad paper jam. I would like to give the printer a good clean as it has not been serviced for years. Can someone please point me to a service guide or give me the steps to follow?
Thanks.

Most likely a toner cartridge isssue. Run a test page from the manual feed tray. When the end of the page just disappears into the printer, open the lid quickly and take out the cartridge. If you see the streaks on the paper inside, it's a bad toner cartridge.

ok thanks moe, will give that a go. but i'd still like to give the inside of the printer a good clean - any tips or things to avoid?

Get a can of air and blow it out. Unless you have a whole lot of toner (like the printer I worked on yesterday that had the whole cartrige dump inside) it doesn't really matter much.

Take it outside so the toner does not settle all over your work area. I would also recommend avoiding breathing the dust.

A rule of thumb to all that read this thread. It is not necessary to clean out a laser printer if you are not getting defects or excess toner on the paper. Build up of toner inside the printer will cause toner on the back of the page and not the front. Only a defective toner or bad fuser will cause toner issues or defects on the printed side of the page. I have seen to many cases where someone insists on cleaning the inside of the printer and they break something or touch something like the transfer roller and then cause image issues. If it works with a new toner, leave it alone.
