My Epson C40 printer is not under warranty due to the waste ink pads filling up already - even after only 7 months of use. What do I need to do to fix this problem and do I need to reset any of the chips ?

It took about 2 days. The reset program was sent via Email - the manual was made available via http download. Had a problem originally and they fixed it straight away. They are great to deal with.

Hi,Guys! First and formost you've to get Service Manuals - it's ABS for printer repair and using its firmsoftware. Service Manuals have all answers for all questions.
www.epson.tk is not much use to people that live on the other side of the world and don’t want to pass on credit card details to an unknown company for such a nominal amount of only a few $’s
I don’t need a service manual, the printers already been serviced that’s the problem, nice new pads for all that waste ink but no way to reset the dam counter….
Master, I take it from your email address you work for this company? Are Epson aware that its software is being sold for “donations”. Or is this legitimate software, coded by programmers working for www.epson.tk, the web sites lack of clarification makes me doubt this.
Epson are the real monsters here, making a fortune the world over with this little scam. Lots of printers being sent back for repairs that only require a new ink pad and a counter reset, how many Epson’s are believed to be dead because of this, the environment is suffering enough without junking perfectly good printers.

WMSTEELE! I don't work for EPSON company. The goal is to help many users to solve problems by themself. For example 480 printer one moment gives a message "Unknown error. Go to service". The EPSON company is NOT HORNEST. They DO KNOW what happened, but they lie! Many users can't print when they need because their printer is blocked, but Epson didn't warn about soon blocking! How do you thin it is? Good? So, many people thank us for help we suggest. Do you still neede adjustment program for 580 printer?

What a nightmare program, it will not work in WinXP so I had to reinstall an old copy of Win98. Fingers crossed and a little luck it worked but not without a final fight....
The program crashes lots in Win98 so you have to be very carefull with it. DONT GO CLICKING LIKE MAD OR IT WILL DIE and take Win98 with it!!!!
A few reboots of Win98 and it worked :)
Now I just need to reinstall WinXP.

You boot the program for C20-C40 then choose MAINTENANCE then Counter Protected then CLEAR That's all. You can do it youself, not only at service (for $20-30):-) Any help - www.otd.com.ua

Mark, its all about money... here in argentina changing the f*cking pad and reseting the printer eeprom cost about $50. The question is.. $50 every 3 or 4 months only because epson says that they have a lot of problem about the ink dropped into the mainboard of old printers?. I dont thinks this is the answer to that problem, there have to be another ways to fix this problem... 3 month after i have buy my epson 580 its stop printing without any reason and i dosnt understand why. Go to service and they give me a new one, but 3 month later... and so on 3 times until my guarantee expire.
I think that the service program have to be free, i have spend about 8 month searching the net to come to this page and a lot of time with my printer in the epson service while i needed it. luckly i havent spend money...

I just got the same error message mentioned above on my 480SXU tonight ("unknown error"). I took it apart, cleaned it up, and thought it would work again but it didn't. Now I see that the problem probably is that I need the reset program. Could someone send it to me? I tried the website above, but didn't see it there. Also, is there a place to buy the new replacement pads mentioned above, or should I just clean the old one? Many thanks. This is a great site!

is this reset program for the inkjet cartridge reset chip or for the eeprom to reset the printer? canon has the same problem, which copied who I do not no. BUT tis all the same..I have seen the waste ink pads in the bottom of the printer..its a mess, but it can be done..you can literally wash the pad as best you can..then re-install and reset the printer..the pads are not your normal cotton pad from the local craft shop. these appears to be high intensity soaking pad..but we are getting reset cartridge machine from our wholesale vendor.

if you lift the lid up on the printer you find either 1 or 2 screws take them out there will be one on the back take that out and the shell should come off the pads are on the right hand side of the printer when it is facing you.just rinse them under the hot tap for a while and dry them on the fire and replace them.

yes but there is still the problem of the waste ink pads, once they get full up they start off all of the problems so its just as easy to either replace them or clean them its only five minutes of a job anyway.i would of thought that it was illegal what epson are doing anyway, as when you ring them they just say they havent got a clue what the problem is and to ring the service centre which they charge you a fortune to fix.

Thank you for the guys that sent me the reset program. It really worked: the printer was resetted fine. Also i cleaned the pads by washing in a tile of water and drying on the heating.

Hang on you unlucky epson 580 owners, asking for the program the last few days, i will send you the complete program. It is in .arj form : you need something like winzip or winrar to unpack. Be-aware: there is a version going around the internet without pictures, and one with them. I only use the one with pictures. They say you need windows 98, i did not check if you can use win xp. It worked for me under win 98. In the program, you have to chose which usb port you use, from which region (world or ESP: for me ESP worked). I first somewhere checked the status of the EEPROM then i did a reset somewhere (do not remember exact details). The i checked again and saw that the numbers were decreased. After using this program, i removed the printer drivers (because i got another error) and restarted the computer. Then i reinstalled the epson 580 as follows: remove the power cable and usb cable. Run the setup of the drivers until the program says: 'connect cable....': first put in the usb cable, then put in the power cable. The rest should be automatic. Then it worked for me.

Thanks to those that sent me the program. I just tried it with XP and got an error "could not open port" so I will copy file to disk and take it and the printer to a friends house running Win ME and try it there.

@Phill I got the same message when i used xp. But i did not have the epson printer connected to the computer (because the printer was not mine: it is on another place). Maybe if you connect the printer to the usb port, try every usb port, maybe it works when you connect to the right one. The program asks you to type in port 1, 2, or 3: on your computer you cannot see which is which.
You could also try the following: in xp you can let the program run under win 98 compatibility mode (right click with mouse on the icon: select 'compatibility mode' under properties)

Have a relative in the computer business. Owns his own store and repair shop. He could do nothing with the 580. Even Epson would not help one of it's own dealers/repair depots on this one. The 580 must be sent into the official Epson repair depot. The reset program will only work up to windows 98 and even than it acts up. Epson has just found a way to make more money from suckers like us. The faster the printer breaks down the more they make on repairs or selling new printers. I wonder if HP pulls the same tricks? Took the printer over to friends tonight with Windows ME and ran the program. Bought the computer home and hooked it up to mine (XP) and I have a working computer again. YAH!!! Saves the $150 I was quoted to get it fixed. Thank you everyone that helped.

don't know ifanyone can help, but I would be very grateful for any tips. The black ink cartridge is COMPLETELY empty, I missed the warning) and now it will not let me renew it. I have put in a new black and colout cartridge but it will not recognise it 'cos it hasn't been through the programme. Hope this makes sense and that someone can help please

I took the printer (and cables) and the reset program (on CD) over to a friends house with a computer running ME. Connected the printer, loaded drivers then run the reset program off the CD I burnt it to. Ran a test page, checked it worked then unplugged it all and bought it (the printer)home and plugged it back into my computer (running XP) and tested it again. and.....it worked :-)

I have a problem with my EPSON stylus color 680,. the error indication on the indicator panel is as follow, both ink and power on indicators are blinking/flashing,..I guess the waste ink pads filling up already is that true ?
if so, could anyone here help me for getting the software adjustment program for SC680, I have downloaded "SC777_Ver.1.1.exe" but it doesn't work for me :(,. It seems the program doesn't do anything when I execute its menu choices.

1) People told me the program works on windows 98 and windows millenium edition. Good to know i think.
2) It is better (my vieuw) first to do the reset with the program and do a test print, and see if it works.I you want, you later might want to clean the ink pads. I tell you this because before using the reset program (at that time i did not know about the reset program) i opened the printer and did some dismantling. After the reset i removed the error but since than i had problems getting the printing on paper. I think the printerhead is too far away from the paper. No problem because i already had ordered a new epson 580. In short: only use the reset program.

I got the printer to work! I did the waste pad cleaning and then ran the restart program, but as Bassie pointed out, I get no printout in black, just color! Seems likely that the printerhead is to far away from the paper.
So try the restart program first...
P.S. Anyone who has an idea how to fix this problem, please drop a line!

Yes, just use the reset program first. Don't touch the inside (for now) i would say.
In my case i think the printer head is too far away from the paper. In the case of Halli maybe indeed he has an empty black cartridge or so. Or he must run some cleaning cycles, test, and than maybe let it stand a day or so. Or do a nozzle check and so on, and so forth.
Like you see, first use the reset program and see if everything works!!! Otherwise you might have other problems to solve.

There are a lot of people bashing Epson in this post. Scanning all of the posts shows more people with HP problems. I think the success of HP reliability is because the print head is replaced with every cartridge change but this does not help the miriad of mechanical problems. I priced replacement cartridges for a friend's HP recently and for third party cartridges, it was $35 for 1 black and 1 color plus shipping. Instead I found and bought them a used 600 for less than $25 including shipping. Now they can use the cheaper cartridges I described above in the previous post. I save enough money on third party cartridges to replace my epson but I still have the original 600 I bought years ago back when Computer City was in business. I do use my printer and use it often for heavy photo printing. I have had very few problems with it even using third party ink. If I ever have a problem with either of my 600's, I will simply buy another good working used one for less than the price of HP cartridges alone. I do agree with the others, I believe it was a bad move on epson's part to produce a printer that required such intense and expensive service as the 480 and the 580. Hopefully with the help of some of you out there, I can get the 480 working for another friend also with the reset program. I am also still working on a non-printing 660 but may soon abandon that in favor of another used 600. Good luck to you all.

i had a problem with my 580 it would not print black after swopping cartriges and running the head cleaning utility several times i got a genaral error message....... now the reset program might clear the genaral error but before i try to beg one of one of you kind people do you think it would help me with the not printing black problem or is that another problem

Jim: That message is indicating a "Maintenance Request Error", which is actually a Waste Ink Ink Pad Error. Your remedy is to replace the waste ink pad/pads with a new one/ones and then reset the Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter. If you just reset the counter and don't replace the pads, then your printers old pads will eventually overflow and normally start leaking ink out the bottom of your printer. You can see "Exploded Parts Diagrams" of most Epson Ink Jet Printers and can also check on possible parts ordering, by Compass Micro Inc, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm . Some people actually wash the ink out of the old pads, by holding them under running cold water. Then they simply dry them out and reinstall them back into their printer. The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make. I would at least recommend getting that Waste Ink Counter reset procedure and performing it first, to make sure your printer will then work...THIS ADDITIONAL INFO MIGHT ALSO BE OF SOME HELP: Tim H 12/10/2003 2:46:24 Subject: Epson Reset Program Download Location. after a long search for a reset program for waste ink, without paying, i found it. goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/sscserve.exe . please check that your printer is compatible goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html . this program has other features as well...Unfortunatly, that "SSC Service Utility" does not work on all Epson Printers and not on all Operating Systems and sometimes will not even work on actually listed printer models, so you will have to check it out for yourself. Most reset procedures are usually available for around $10.00 [+/-]...There is an "Epson Stylus C60 Printer Information Page", that also includes the C41 series, that you can view at http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/C60.html . It does have a section on the left side you can click-on, titled WASTE INK PAD SERVICING and also a section titled HOUSING REMOVAL, that will be of some help to you, if you want to try the needed servicing...Good Luck! You need to go on-line and check it out, to see if it will actually work on your "C41" printer. Its not something that is sent to you. If that service utility does not work on your printer or your computers operating system, then you have to go on-line and buy and download that reset procedure. Simply resetting that "Waste Ink Error" service condition, is only doing part of the job and you may have additional problems later, if thats all you actually do. There is an "Epson Stylus C60 Printer Information Page", that also includes the C41 series, that you can view at http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/C60.html . It does have a section on the left side you can click-on, titled WASTE INK PAD SERVICING and also a section titled HOUSING REMOVAL, that will be of some help to you, if you want to try the needed servicing. You need to read the messages and replies on this message board, concerning the, free "SSC Service Utility". You will then need to go on-line and check it out, to see if it will actually work on your particular printer, or not. If that service utility does not work on your printer or your computers operating system, then you have to go on-line and buy and download that reset procedure, for your particular printer. i have just bought a usb cable for my epson 480 but all it says is a connection error i have managed to print one thing off but now it doesnt print at all. i bought the cable because i got a laptop and it doesnt have a parelel conection so i got a usb to parellel connecter.

i have downloaded the new driver form the epson site and installed them as well. i just cant understand what the problem is i been at it for 2 days now. i got a new cable new driver its printed one thing but now it just doesnt go. its got the communication error. sumtimes it just freezes on the searching....

If you just reset the counter and don't replace the pads, then your printers old pads will eventually overflow and normally start leaking ink out the bottom of your printer. You can see "Exploded Parts Diagrams" of most Epson Ink Jet Printers and can also check on possible parts ordering, by Compass Micro Inc, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm . Some people actually wash the ink out of the old pads, by holding them under running cold water. Then they simply dry them out and reinstall them back into their printer. The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make. If that utility is available to use on your printer model, then you can try their individual color or black printhead cleaning, to try and open up those possibly closed nozzles. They also have a powerful cleaning process that you can use, but it uses up more of your ink. People have posted messages saying that the more powerful cleaning process, actually helps to flush out closed nozzles, but I have never actually used it. That ssc service utility, offers some useful services for epson printers, like cartridges hot swap, csic enabling/disabling, waste counter reset and so on. Most of these functions are built in the printer, but they are not readily available, except by using an actual epson service manual, or thru an actual reset procedure. Although that ssc service utility has been created to help with printer troubleshooting and related ink procedures, it is not designed for most normal printing needs. Unfortunatly, that utility does not work on all epson printers and was designed for the windows operating systems, so you will have to check it out for yourself...Here's some previously posted info that may also help. hi i have 480 epson changed cartridge then all it does know is unknown error unplug call epson for repair. it says its ready to print. i called tech here in canada there answer was 65.00+ taxes any info appreciated how to clear it it says i have pictures waiting to do. thanks jim

I was very happy last month to have found this site, I took my troublesome Epson 580 apart, tried to dab the ink pad dry, then installed the fix. IT WORKED! I was so happy because I had just purchased 5 new ink cartidges and although printers aren't overly expensive, I so wanted to not have to waste my new purchases.
Then, on Christmas eve, my computer crashed. I had to get a new hard drive installed and my (sorry to say) Windows ME reinstalled. Now I'm sad to say, although I do have the original Epson disk, I can't get it to reinstall. It goes so far, then I get a message that I don't have the printer plugged in or connected to the computer. I'm thinking it's relating again to the original problem of the counter needing resetting, but if I can't install the printer (not even the driver from the site), then I can't reset the counter again. Any suggestions?

I know this isn't that helpful, but... jeez! some of these people are being really stupid and/or not understanding english very well. posting a link to the site you're already on? hm. I came here for help but ended up reading 50% ignorant comments & repeat requests.
Denny Conway & the rest, you are extremely patient & helpful - I respect the amount of time you seem to put into helping people out, but surely the format or method of finding/submitting help needs to be refined to stop people being confused about what they have to do to get help. It should be simple, but it seems like you need a more fool proof solution than a message board. Maybe a bit of moderation at least?
I know it's easy to criticise and much less to actually provide useful help & a solution to problems, but it just seems like this thread got lost somewhere along the way -big time. I've found useful help on here before. What happened here? Maybe you could put some info next to the message post box to explain that you need to READ what is offered before you post empty requsts, and/or summarise links that were posted somewhere in a column on the right?

Hi whenever I replace the ink cartridges in epson c41 SX inkjet, if the cartridges are not epson, there is a problem. Colors are not proper. One of 3 primary colors will not get printed. The quality of the print is to be kept at Quality - among Quality, Speed and Middle of the two. Speed option will not print properly.
Also, Out of 2 options, colr and black, if I select Black and try to print the printer always show paperjam red light and it is not printing. How to solve this problem?
Note, I am not using refilled ones. I am getting the Wipro Wep cartridges. Pl. help me out.

My Epson Printer wont print black, after I changed the new ORIGINAL black ink cartridge. I had run severals (10-15 times) head cleaning and nozzle check with no success at all. I had read about the Epson Solution, but I want to know other possible tips or methods to fix the printer myself before I tried the solution, or without having to bring the printer to nearest Epson service centre!!

tengo problemas con mi epson el escender se mueven los cabezales y luego las luces de verde y rojo parpadean secuencialmente, ya probe con otro cartucho y mantenimiento, talves sea por falta del reset porq la esponja estaba q rebalsa de tinta, claro que ya lo limpie, si alguien me podria ayudar con el diagnostico se los agradeceria. gracias

I have downloaded the Epson Engineers software for all Epson printers and the Epson Stylus Color 580 is on it. It is available to download (free), but I can't remember the site address, it is called SSC Serve Utility Software and the installation file is sscserve.exe I could send this to you by email, but you would probably be sceptical of viruses as would I, so feel free to search the net for this file.
Install the program, go to [Start] then [Program Files] / [All Programs] click on SSC Serve and it will open the configeration screen, click on the [Configuration] tab, select the 580 from both drop down menus (your 580 printer software must be installed on your computer to appear in the top menu / list). When you've configured both drop down lists, close the program [X]. It will now run in your task bar at the bottom of the screen until your next computer restart. Click the right button on the new printer icon in your task bar for the menu. Click on [Protection Counter] and you get 3 options. (1) Show current value. (This shows how many passes (prints) your printer has done). (2) Reset Protection Counter. (This resets the passes (prints) to zero). It will ask you if you've replaced the INK PAD, say Yes or Ok. (See INK PAD Info' below for more detail) (3) Clear Counter Overflow. (If you've gone over the maximum amount of passes allowed there will be an overflow and will also need resetting).
If you've continued to print past the preset printing overflow limit, your printer will lock out completely and give two flashing lights to show this which will not allow you to carry out any task on the printer. For the Epson Stylus Color 580 (USB Version), there are no buttons and no lights on the printer so you won't see the lock out. To unlock the printer use the SSC Serve software icon again with the right mouse button, click on [Extras] and then [Soft Reset]. This frees the lock out. On printers with buttons and lights, you'll see when the lock out has been freed by the lights, but on printers with no lights you just have to wait 5 or 10 minutes before restarting your computer with the printer left on and unused throughout.
Once you've Soft Reset your printer and reset the counter and overflow you will be able to restart your computer, the SSC Serve software will not run in the task bar anymore and your normal printer software icon will. Your printer should be working as normal once again. However, if it has been out of action for a number of weeks without use, your print heads will have dried up and you will probably need cleaning cartridges for it in order to allow ink flow once again. These can sometimes be expensive, but I've found some high quality branded cheap one's in the UK at http://www.page-net.com The INK Store. Their on the Epson Stylus Color 580 ink cartridge page.
INK PAD Info':
The ink pad takes many years to fill as the ink is water based and evaporates / drains all the liquid content leaving only the solid parts that make up the dye or pigment in the pad. There is also a tube fitted to the base of the ink pad on most models that allows the liquid content of the ink to drain into a catch tray at the bottom of the printer. This then evaporates from there to the atmosphere leaving only the solid parts behind which dry and harden.
Ink Pad Full Message:
'Your Ink Pad needs emptying and so we've stopped your printer from working until you do so', is Epson's EXCUSE for stopping their customers from using their Epson printer past a predefined number of prints, usually resulting in the disposal of the printer and the purchase of a new one. Once your guarantee has run out, there will be a charge of at least £25 to empty this pad and reset the counter by an Epson dealer. Because they use the ink pad as an excuse, it saves Epson from facing prosecution for blatent disregard for Fair Trading & Trading Standards. Which means that they sell more of their latest models and Epson customers get to fill up the landfills and junk yards with millions of perfectly good printers. However, Epson's are truly great printers when they are working and if you have this software and use your printer regularly, you'll have virtually trouble free printing for many years, which is rare for any brand of printer.
I hope this info helps many people.
