 | HP series II Laserjet Printer by waltwin (5/10/08 12:40 PM) reply | + / - | I just received and installed the AC power supply repair kit with the video DVD. It is a pretty straight forward repair. I also replaced the fuser with a new one although the old one checked OK.
I am still getting the 50 service error code! Any ideas?

 | Re: HP series II Laserjet Printer by waltwin (5/10/08 5:26 PM) reply | + / - | Thank you for the response. I did as you suggested but no joy. I am still getting the same service 50 error. My connector was not marked FUSER but after studying the cable layout it was obvious which cable you were referring to. One cable connects to the fan, one to the fuser and one into the chassis.
I have to assume that the power supply that I received is good and I followed your procedure for checking out the fuser that I have. As I stated I have also replaced it with a rebuilt fuser.

You should hear the motor turn for several seconds and then you should see some light emanating from the fuser for about 20-30 seconds. Then it should pulse on and off intermittently to keep fuser temp at operating temp. Describe what is happening, also take note of any clicking sounds coming from the power supply module.

 | Re: HP series II Laserjet Printer by waltwin (5/11/08 1:18 PM) reply | + / - | I have done as you suggested. I did hear some activity which I assume is the motor. The printer went through it's self check cycle then gave a 50 Service Code. The only Panel light that remained on was the one marked "MANUAL." I did not hear any clicking sounds from the Power Supply.
The difference between the old and new power supply is that the old Power supply did not give an immediate code. It waited, then gave the Code. The replacement supply gives the Code immediately after the self check.
I did not get any light from the fuser. I waited for a full ninety seconds. I once again pulled the fuser and did the checks that you recommend on your site and both of the fuser's check OK.
Is it possible that I am not getting voltage to the fuser or is that what the new power supply is providing. Can you give me some test points so I can determine if voltages are present.

 | Re: HP series II Laserjet Printer by moe (5/12/08 4:14 PM) reply | + / - | The power supply gets tested before it goes out. It worked for some time in our test bed. That's not to say that it couldn't have gone bad the very next time it got switched on. Even new parts out of the box sometimes don't work. There are only 2 voltage outputs out of that supply. The switched AC voltage goes to the fuser, the other AC voltage passes through to the DC power supply where it gets converted to DC. It's really hard to diagnose remotely. Could be the power supply, in rare instances it can be the DC controller putting out a false 50 error. The DC controller also monitors the temperature of the fuser and sends the signal to switch the AC to the fuser on. I've seen a few of them go bad. Then there was the 50 error (a long time ago) I spent several hours replacing power supplies, DC controllers, fusers, wiring to no avail. Even tried swapping working parts from another printer. In the end out of total frustration, I gave up and reinstalled all the original parts. Tried one more time (what the heck) and the damned thing went to Ready. Then it wouldn't fail, even after powering it up and down and letting it run for a couple days. It might be still working for all I know.

 | Re: HP series II Laserjet Printer by waltwin (5/12/08 9:36 PM) reply | + / - | I have more invested in this printer than I should have. What do you suggest that I do. Dumping it at this stage of the game doesn't seem like a good option.
I did try re-installing the old supply but no joy. Incidentally that term came from my old submarine days many years ago when I was a young sailor, on a Diesel boat. We were on Patrol testing a new device and our CO kept reporting "NO JOY MY GADGET." I have never forgotten it.
If the DC supply is the large box that sits forward of the new power supply, I have two spares for that also, but I have no way to test those. I has some relays and what seems to be a selenium rectifier on it.
I will wait for your response.

 | Re: HP series II Laserjet Printer by moe (5/13/08 10:32 AM) reply | + / - | DC power supply will not cause the error. Most likely, it's either going to be the replacement power supply failed or the DC controller. Or you could get into something like I got into in my previous post. Some of those 50 errors can be a real nightmare to fix.

 | Re: HP series II Laserjet Printer by waltwin (5/13/08 3:09 PM) reply | + / - | Would you suggest that I return the replacement Power supply? That would eliminate that possibility. How much is a replacement DC controller or is there a test I can perform to eliminate it as a potential problem.

 | Re: HP series II Laserjet Printer by moe (5/13/08 3:38 PM) reply | + / - | You really can't test the DC controller as it monitors the fuser and sends signals to the AC power supply. Only thing you can do is replace it. There really is no way to isolate the error without replacing parts. If you want to send back the power supply for us to test, you're welcome to do so. You can also send the DC controller as well.

 | Re: HP series II Laserjet Printer by waltwin (5/13/08 4:07 PM) reply | + / - | Can you tell me where the DC controller is or what it looks like? I don't want to send you the wrong part. I can also return the old or suspect power supply. I guess we should determine if that one is in fact bad.
Thanks for the help and quick response.

 | Re: HP series II Laserjet Printer by moe (5/13/08 4:50 PM) reply | + / - | DC controller is the smaller of the 2 boards on the bottom of the printer. You have to remove the metal pan and the larger board to access it. 4 short screws and 2 long screws. A bunch of connectors. Be careful pulling off the fiber optic cable as you can pull the end off. Board is attached to DC power supply, so you have to wiggle it a bit to get it up after you disconnect everything.

 | Re: HP series II Laserjet Printer by waltwin (5/14/08 5:26 PM) reply | + / - | I am going to return the two power supplies. I will hold off on the DC Controller until I hear what you find with the supplies. It sounds like a lot of disassambly and potential trouble for a not so comon problem.
Could you provide me with a good mailing address?

 | Re: HP series II Laserjet Printer by waltwin (5/22/08 7:00 PM) reply | + / - | I have been busy the last several days. Could you send me an address so I can send these power supplies to you for testing? I would like to repair this printer or send it on its way.
Thank you,

 | Re: HP series II Laserjet Printer by waltwin (6/26/08 6:56 PM) reply | + / - | Hi MOE
The last time we communicated you were going to send me an address where I could send these AC powere supplies to test them. My wife has been pretty ill so I have been out of touch. I never did get that address!

 | Re: HP series II Laserjet Printer by XS650HEAD (6/27/08 1:42 AM) reply | + / - | Try the uppper fan - when the bushes sieze they can cause an error 50, it's possible to clean the bushes (assuming it's one of the older type upper fans) and regrease them.
good luck PS Leave it powered off for at least 15 minutes before retrying.
