HP Officejet R80 paper feed problems

HP Officejet R80 paper feed problems by Evergreen (4/16/08 11:55 AM) reply + / -
My HP Officejet R80 will attempt to feed paper from the tray, but comes back with "out of paper" message. It will sometimes take the paper, but either jams the printer, or at the very least, curls up the area where the machine grabs the paper to draw it in.

Any suggestions as to how to clean or adjust this feed mech. would be greatly appreciated.

Remove the rear cleanout door and clean the feed rollers with water. It that solves the problem I suggest using rubber rejuventator. If the paper does not feed after the water cleaning the paper lifter may be out of place.

Run a print job and view the paper tray at a low angle so you can see if the paper feed rollers are turning and if the paper is being lifted into them. If the rollers are turning and the paper is not lifting, either there is something that has jammed the mechanism, or the paper lifer (a shiny metal piece, about 1" X 3") is out of place. To check pull the sliding paper tray forward and remove the rear access door. Looking from the rear of the printer, the paper lifter should be laying flat, more or less, against the bottom between the left two feed rollers. It has tabs that fit into slots.

The printer will have to be partially disassembled to reinstall it, i.e. remove the back panel and feed rollers, not that difficult.

Replacing the paper lifter
1. Remove the rear cleanout door.
2. Remove rear panel by pressing the two latches on its bottom edge. The panel will hinge upward and disengage.
3. Release and remove the feed rollers by rotating the levers that are integrated into both black feed roller shaft bearings. The levers rest in detents and must be pried outward slightly with a small slot style screwdriver before they can be rotated (toward the back of the printer).
4. Pull the sliding paper tray forward.
5. The dislodged paper lifter can now have it’s tabs reinserted into the slots in the bottom of the printer. The slots are between the left two feed rollers.

Thanks Bert!!!!

I will work on some general maintenance today. I didn't realize that the paper tray would slide in and out (gosh, you would think that I would notice, after all this time). I tried to print out your response, got a paper jam, then noticed that the tray was not "locked in" to the most inward position. When I locked it in, it printed your response without any feed problems! I'll clean it up anyway, just in case it was a fluke..... But I can't thank you enough for saving me the cost of a shop repair - one that's probably not needed!
