Epson Stylus Photo 820 prints nothing

My Epson Stylus Photo 820 printed only occasional traces of color or black ink. I removed the print head from the printer without disconnecting it and soaked it in a tray of alcohol. It cleaned up nicely but now it prints nothing. I read, after the fact, that I should not have used alcohol as a solvent because it might damage the printing heads. Can anyone tell me why this would be so since alcohol is such a mild type of solvent. Thanks.
