HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure

HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by Egizianos (8/23/07 8:27 PM) reply+2 + / -
I am posting this in the hopes that it may help other lost lambs like myself as I was unable to find this answer on my own searching the web.

For the past couple of days, my happy little HP 6180 Printer has been asking for new yellow juice. I finally got the chance to go pick up a new cartridge and much to my dismay, when I installed it, I got a message saying Ink System Failure... something something... refer to documentation.

Well, the documentation had no references to this kind of error. I tried everything the website suggested, unplugging it, taking out the ink cartridges, starting the whole thing up and reinstalling and the error just appeared again and again.

I looked online and was dismayed to find that people said that they had gotten refurbished models sent to them because they couldn't get tech support at HP to help them... OR that they were charged big bucks for tech support.

My husband took over at that point (I am normally the geek but it was a long day) he got online with a tech support person and she talked him through fixing it. It works great once again!!!

Here is the content of the chat, hopefully it helps you too! Christina is the tech support person.

Christina: Let us perform some steps to isolate the issue and find a fix for it.
Christina: Please perform the following steps and let me know the message that will be displayed on the printer.
Christina: A. - Press and hold the “*” key.
B. - Press the “#” key and release both keys.
Display should say “Enter Special Key Combo”
C. - Press and release in sequence the “1”, “2” and “3” buttons.
CustomerName: ok
CustomerName: screen says "support" R0631M
Christina: Fine.
Christina: 2. Press and release the right arrow button until the display says “System Configuration Menu”.
Christina: 3. Press and release the “OK” button.
Christina: 4. Display should say “Hardware failure status”. If not there already, Arrow Key over to “Hardware failure status”,
Christina: 5. Press and release the “OK” button.
Christina: 6. Display should say “Hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear”.
CustomerName: yup
Christina: 7. Press and release the “OK” Button. Message changes to “Hardware failure status Cleared. Press Cancel to continue”.
CustomerName: ok
Christina: 8. Press and release the “CANCEL” button as many times as necessary, so that, either the “Welcome to Photosmart Express” screen appears, or, the “Ink System Failure” screen appears. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO PRINT AT THIS STAGE.
CustomerName: ok
Christina: 9. Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.
CustomerName: done
Christina: Fine.
Christina: 10. Wait 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then plug the power cable into the wall outlet first and then into the back of the printer
CustomerName: done
Christina: 11. Turn the unit on. The printer may display message “USE POWER BUTTON TO SHUTDOWN THE PRINTER” followed by “PRESS OK TO CONTINUE”. Press OK. The Printer will start the “ONE TIME INK INITIALIZATION PROCESS”. Allow this process to complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process is complete, the printer will print out a Diagnostic Page.
CustomerName: made a buncha noise, and it didn't print a diagnostic page
Christina: Good.
Christina: Is the error message still being displayed on the printer?
CustomerName: nope
Christina: Good.
CustomerName: should I try to print something?
Christina: Let us print a self test page to check the functionality of the printer.
Christina: Press Setup menu on the All-in-One then scroll using the arrow key and select Print Report then select Self Test Report.

Thanks Egizianos

How could anyone know that stuff without HP insider info. I'm going to archive the conversation.

I cannot tell you how great this entry was. I'm a lawyer and our printer got the same "ink system failure" message just as we were printing an appellate brief that HAD to be mailed today.

I found your archive using google, followed it, and got the printer working again.

You saved me. If you are ever in Shreveport, Louisiana, my firm will buy you dinner or lunch.

This worked for me. My son was doing a project that was due the next morning in school. The printer failed and it was 9:30p.m. Ouch! Luckily my hero, husband, found this site and wam bam thank you mam we were up and running again. Thanks a bunch.

Question: We have been using refillable cartridges. I'm not sure if the others who are having this problem are using non HP ink cartridges. Do you think that is what caused this error or do you think it is just a problem HP customers are having across the board?

Much appeciated.

OK, I have a question. Here's the section of the transcript:

The Printer will start the “ONE TIME INK INITIALIZATION PROCESS”. Allow this process to complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process is complete, the printer will print out a Diagnostic Page.
CustomerName: made a buncha noise, and it didn't print a diagnostic page
Christina: Good.

the tech said it SHOULD print a diagnostic page, but it didn't. Isn't that a problem?

Egizianos ,thank you for the post about the conversation with HP to fix
HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure.
it cleared my ink system failure Oxc0160.a great thing since i thought the
printer was finished.it wouldn't do anything.
the first thing i did was the printer self report test,it failed.only one
yellow block showed up.
then i ran the clean printhead,3 yellow blocks showed up.no other colors.
then i did an align printer.it's all messed up.one yellow block, one pink.
new message"print cartridge alignment failed".
i guess i have to keep messing with it,until it works again.
this happened after i used replacement ink.how does the dumb machine
know it's not HP ink?
i got one real cartridge and drilled a hole in it before i put it in the machine.
when it was running out,i used a dropper to fill it,WITHOUT taking the
cartridge out of the machine.this way i knew it wasn't a chip reset problem.
the message came up that i wasn't using HP ink.
so there must be something in the ink.
this machine has been a problem from about a month after i received it.
all i do is try to fix it,and hardly ever printed much out of it,because
i'm too busy diagnosing problems and fixing it.
i will call HP yet again to curse them out,and call them corporate pigs.
calling them for help or anything else is useless, and a waste of time.
thanks again so much!i really thought it was dead this time.

Hi everyone,
I was grateful to find this thread, too, and hoped it would resolve yet another in a long line of ink system failures on this printer. But, no luck.
The error I got was: 0xc05d1281
So, I did a chat session myself with HP and what finally worked was to reset to the factory defaults. There is a power down/key sequence that does this, and after that, everything's working again. The tech. support person said that now that we've reset these factory defaults, I shouldn't get the error again.
Here's the link for support (I don't want to tell you how to do it the wrong way) - just ask if they can directly take you to 'resetting factory defaults' - it was pretty quick!

Just remember the reset that you posted is 1 time only. If you receive the ink system failure after that. The printer has to be replaced, you cannot do another reset like that again. And it's only for specific Ox errors not all of them, so instead of trying to wreck the printer by doing this reset, call HP or do online support and they will help you. There is documentation on different 0x errors and different resets available.

I just had the same problem with my 6180 and it went back to the error message after it printed just 1 page. I have a 3210 that has the same ink system problem but I was able to fix that by installing a new set of 02 ink catrages while reseting to factory defaults and starting a new ink purge. I refill my ink cartrages. I think the ink system problem mostly has to do with air purging from the cartages. BUT when you reinstall a set of NEW ink cartrages it must allow the purge of the air. I just tryed a new set of ink catrages with this fix and I have it up a running now. So try running the fix again and when you shut down the system and pull the plug reinstall a fresh set of 02 ink. Then turn it back on and let it run its default ink purge. Hope this helps -I saved now 2 printers and lots of ink!

Thank you so much for this information. I had exactly the same thing happen, obviously there is something wrong with this printer when the yellow ink needs to be replaced.

I followed your information and I am back printing again.

Thanks again,

Just an update - I have now had two system failures and was able to run the fix on it for the second time. ***I also was able to use my back up "New" but "old" 02 ink set that I reset the first time with. After I fixed the ink failure the first time with the Fresh new 02 Ink cartridges -I pulled them out to save for another ink failure down the road. I went back to my refilled set and back up and printing. The fix seems to work more then once thus far! Lets see if I can get a third fix in a row lol!

You guys just saved me $400 +. I was getting a yellow ink cartridge empty error. I did have to purchase about 3 yellow cartridges before I found this thread. I had no success with HP Tech. They told me I could get a new printer. This is the second HP that died on me. I wish I new of this site before I trashed my old D145. This is the second time this has happened right after the warranty expired. As a lawyer, I smell Class Action!!!

My printer did the same thing and as I was on hold (for 30 minutes) for HP technical service, I was searching google for this problem and came across this site; however, in the meantime, HP answered and since the error message on my printer was Error: Oxc05d0281, it meant hardware failure and HP is replacing my photosmar C6180 all in one free of charge. HP is fed-exing me a new printer within 10 days & I just have to return this one in the pre-paid return box. No fee to me! I was totally surprised. So, if you are getting Error: Oxc05d0281 with Ink System Failure - CONTACT HP immediately.

Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by bg1114 (4/21/08 12:09 PM) reply+1 + / -
I found that in order for the steps above to work, I had to first do the following:
1. Unplug the printer and wait 30 seconds for power to discharge.
2. Plug in the printer.
3. Hold the CANCEL and OK buttons simultaneously, and keep them depressed while you hit the ON button. This resets the printer.
4. When the printer turns on, if you still get the error message, it's OK. Then perform the steps listed above, starting with pressing the * and # key.
5. After you perform the steps listed above, when you are at the step at the end where you are pressing the cancel button until you get to the WELCOME screen, if at some point you see a message, “Inproper shutdown, hit OK”, go ahead and hit OK and the Welcome screen should appear.
One thing that is nice about this method is that it doesn't use up all your ink doing a recalibration.

Hi All

I've tried everything to get my C6180 working. My error is 0xc18a0107
This happened after I replaced the cyan print cartridge, I let the cartridge display as empty which I don't know if that was right or wrong but I did turn the printer off before I changed the cartridge.
I've tried the removing the print cartridges procedure as detailed on HP.com.
I've tried the hard system reset described for another model of photosmart printer ok+cancel+black+color.
I've tried the above procedure twice and when I try to print a test page it comes up with the same error. The printer is 13 months old so not under warranty and I really like all the features of the printer so I don't want to bin it. Can someone please help me fix the problem.

Please Help

Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by Symmetry (5/24/08 11:54 AM) reply + / -
I am wondering if you really followed the steps to do a full system reset. If not try the reset again and then see if that helps. Are you sure your cyan is new or perhaps never filled at the factory -if it's new it will tell you it is new. If not you will have to purge the system of the trapped air in the ink lines. Air gets trapped if a cartrage runs empty and is not removed before the next ink loading process. If you fill your own ink like I do this can happen if you are not watching or checking that all catrages have ink in them. If you have a truely trapped in the lines you will have to get a new set of ink and run the full system reset (this is talked about in other posts). Just after you pull the plug and ran the reset you must take out all the old catrages and add a new set (this is a small price to pay for fixing the printer). After you put the new ink in then turn the printer back on so it can complete its reset and it will run a full purge as it reloads new ink. This will push out the trapped air that is giving you the error message. You can then pull out the new ink and add your refilled ink if you wish. Good Luck!

Re: Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by Anonymous (5/24/08 12:12 PM) reply + / -
That is true if you do not replace the ink with a new set. The reset will work EVERY time if you back it up with a new set of ink. That is if you have the same ink system failure we are all mostly having. This is mostly from air trapped in the ink lines that happens when you run out of ink and fail to replace the ink before the printer does another ink reload. THis is a big problem for people like me who refill our own ink catrages. I have printed about 10,000 pages on about $120.oo of bulk ink. Again this will fix the error if you simple change out all your ink catrages for a new set. You must do this right after you do the system reset and pulling the plug. The new set of ink will cause the printer to purge the air out of the system forcing new ink in the lines. I have now reset my print about 5 times doing this -works every time. (you can also pull out the new ink after this and put your old ink cartages in -JUST MAKE SURE THEY ARE FULL TO THE TOP AND MAKE SURE THAT YOU KEEP REFILLING THEM BEFORE THEY GET TO LOW AND SUCK AIR BACK IN THE LINES!!!!!!!!!!!!

After experiencing the "ink system failure" issue on my Photosmart 3110 and being told by no fewer than 3 HP reps that my best alternative was to purchase a discounted replacement from HP (at a price higher than the going rate online) I found the "OK," "Cancel," "Black," and "Color" reset solution on this site. I restarted my printer, and now it works.

I am absolutely outraged and am seriously considering a class action lawsuit. I am looking for people who trashed their Photosmart after getting an ink system failure message and after being told by HP that it was a hardware failure. If you fit this description and you're interested, send a message to HPinksystemfailure@gmail.com.

Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by edifyguy (5/31/08 12:44 PM) reply + / -
I have a similar problem with my C7280, with an important variation. When I first bought my printer, I tried to use it with a continuous ink supply system. It was terrible. I ended up returning it.

I think that as a result of that horrible system, I got a large amount of trapped air in my yellow printhead chamber. I am now using refillable, manually-reset cartridges that are in every respect the same functionally as the HP OEM cartridges. They will not run the printhead dry, as they have chips that accurately report the ink level in the cartridge. But after using only about 1/4 cartridge of yellow, the yellow head runs dry. I have to execute the cleaning cycle 2-3 times to get it to reprime.

My theory is that if I unplugging it instead of shutting it down and then plug it right back in, the purge-prime cycle that is triggered by that sequence should eventually purge the air out of my yellow head. If it doesn't, getting into service mode, right next to the failure mode clear that you were clearing is the "initial ink priming" option. The problem is, it won't run without the goofy cartridges that came with the machine. Those are long gone.

If all else fails, can I either force it to re-run that initial prime with normal OEM cartridges (I do have a set of those available) or can I get a set of the "initial" cartridges from somewhere?

Thank you Eqizianos! I ran across this same problem with my C6180 this morning and knew I did not want to deal with HP's tech support in India. Whenever I've called them in the past it has taken forever and I can't understand them! Anyway, I followed your post and it cleared my problem perfectly. I do NOT use refillable cartridges as some of the other posts have mentioned, so I know that is not the issue here. I'm worried that it may happen again, but as of now I am up and running thanks to you! I certainly appreciate you taking the time to post this!

If you do get the new set of catrages -which will work to clear the air out of the line make sure you do not buy the full set of ink they sell these packets of ink for prinking 4x6 photo's and they are cheaper. You might already know this but its good to post so others can get the info. I am thinking about those reset refillable catrages for my printer- sounds like your having good luck with them. Who did you buy them from and where do you get your bulk ink from? It seems to be the best way to go.

Thanks,

I get all of the above from alotofthings.com; Joe is the owner, and he's quickly getting to be a friend of mine. It's cheaper to buy the refillables (sans ink) than a full set of OEMs. HAHA!

I have been using the refillables and like them but the dark magenta drained out of the cartridge (staining everything below it) so I'm not sure about trying this reset without doing some internal cleanup. Are there any instructions on getting into the machine to thoroughly clean it? Any idea why the refillable leaked all over?

I have an "HP Photosmart C5140 All-in-One" Printer. This is the second ink system error message (0xc18a0301) I have gotten in less than 2 months. My printer is only less than 14 mos. old. HP is telling me that it is NOT FIXABLE and to buy one of their upgrades for over $200. Oh, but they'll be so nice as to give me a whole $30 rebate for their "customers". This company really annoys me. Does anyone know if my printer is really junk or is there any possible way to fix it? PLEASE HELP!! Anyways, whoever has this error message on their C5140, the fix they gave me they said only works once and since this is the second time, they say my printer isn't fixable now.

Hi Guys,

I have the same problem! Stupid Photosmart C6180 that i have hardly used. Apparently its 100 days out of warranty...not that i would want a stupid replacement anyway! Just got off the phone to some lady that called herself a HP support person..not much help @ all and brought it all down to a "hardware issue" and that i would need to buy a new printer. I have tried everything from everyone's posts but still nothing..Tried to reset after the ink system failure message and now my printer won't even turn on to the welcome screen. All it does is it has the blue screen that tries to load, then after 10 seconds the screen goes black and then turns back on to try to load again and just keeps doing that!!! So annoyed and hate HP!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had a ink system failure and it was cleared using the procedure listed above, however it came back without the error when I went to print in color everything was coming out green - I contacted HP and they told me to take the two Margenta heads out and clean the contacts with distilled water did that did not work - contacted again and the told me to go to HP Solutions and open toolbar in settings - toolbar would not open - then they said to go to Control Panel and click on Printer and then Properties and when I got to the third step it came up with a window saying unable to do procedure - finally I took all the inks out and cleaned all the heads with distilled water and a q-tip - I also aligned the printerheads - cleaned the printers heads and I still had a printer that only printed in black - meanwhile I contact HP for the 7th time - now later on I decided to look on the web for a new printer so I printed the page and to my amazement it came out perfect - so a ran a test page and by some miracle every ink color came out and now it works.

I guess my ink problem is different but this was good, I get "cannot print" Replace the following empty ink cartridge to resume printing ... I did twice and get the same error, does anybody have a clue, HP said to take it to get repaired. Arent these things disposable? It would probably be just as expensive to get another one if I can't come up with a quick fix, Thanks for any help.

Re: Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by Anonymous (8/4/08 6:30 PM) reply + / -
The fix will work again -Just get a new set of ink cartages -Buy the once that sell for about $39.00 -$49.00 a set. These come with the set of 50 4x6 photo kits. You can then use this set as your "fixing" set. This fix can work many times just as long as you get the new set of ink and do not let them run low on ink. The problem most likely is from air trapped in the ink lines. You can purge them with the new set of ink as it loads the new set through the lines. It has saved me many times. By the way if your ink cartrages runs low or runs out of ink this is when it sucks the air in to the line causing the problem. HP wants you to buy a new printer - $40.00 is better then $200.00. I hope things work out for you.

Anonymous, thanks for the quick reply, both of the times I have tried to replace the cartridges I did purchase NEW kits (all the colors w/ the printing paper) if it is an air problem is there any way to purg or inject the air out? again thanks

I just run a full reset and when it shuts down I pull the cartrages and turn it back on and when it asks for the cartrages I put the new set in. One of your old but "new" sets should work. Just make sure you run the reset -which is posted in the begining of this link. Just read back some and you will find it posted. I hope this helps.

Hi, I went out and bought new ink cartridges and it did not work - when I print out a test page the Margenta's barely print -I'm really getting frustrated the printer is only a little over a year old - and I would not mind but I bought the printer before I bought the computer and when I bought the computer it came with a free color printer (which I gave to my brother-in-law) but no I wanted the HP6180 so I could print, scan, fax. I'm now thinking of buying the new Kodak.

HP doesn't put this info in documentation with the printer.
That's because it will only work 1 or 2 times in the life
of the printer. After that it can't be done again & the
unit will have to be replaced. So don't go through this
unless you absolutely have to !!

Now everytime I print a page I get the error message then I have to go through all the steps to get rid of it. I changed 2 of the ink cartridges because they were a little low l0% & 17% but it still keeps printing only one page and then the error. This is getting ridiculous I feel like taking a hammer to it. Why won't HP tell you the real problem and send you the part instead of all this press this press that and it only works for a week. I thought this printer was going to last longer than my computer boy was I wrong.

I love your explaination, it is very easy to follow. One problem. I have followed this about a hundred times and at first it worked. It would print two times then the error message would appear again. I would start the entire process over again, just to get two more pages printed out. Now I can't get anything to print out. Anymore suggestions.

this fix does not apply to all ink system failure messages, depends on the error code shown, (0xc18...applies only to this one) if is 0xc05 or 0xc19 or 019 contact HP for additional TS

Suggestions? Get another one. If it re-codes as soon as you clear it (or virtually as soon as) something has truly gone wrong in the printer. I put the wrong black ink in and then let it sit for too long (bad) which clogged the black printhead (worse!) and then tried to use alcohol in the cartridge to clean it out (death sentence?) and it coded. It would clear, but then come right back up again. Lesson: use the right ink, and don't buy these el-cheapo printers!

Just went out today and purchased the C7280 from Staples because they have a great warranty that they will replace your machine if it can't be fixed not like Circuit City which sent me a refurbished. Still have fingers crossed that this will last more than a year.

As I told you on Wednesday I went to Staples and bought a new printer 7280 well its Saturday and I just came back from returning it - it lasted two days - I went to turn in on yesterday and it made this clunking noise and said there was a paper jam - how could it have a paper jam when I did not even press copy - could not clear it - I'm now back with my old 6180 for some reason after I reconnected it the error code went away and so far its working - I'm just so confused as to what to buy if this one goes again the guy in the store said HP is cornering the market with printers and really I looked at alot of other printers but they could not come close to the HP but what good is it if they don't last.

I have an HP C6180 printer with the optional HP ph5582 automatic 2-sided printing accessory. I also use HP-02 Refillable Cartridges from Printer Filling Station.

After printing a 2-sided document I got this Ink System Failure with error 0xca0207. Normal rebooting of XP and removing power from the printer did not eliminate the problem. Since I was low on black ink, I filled the refillable cartridge for the first time and replaced the original HP Cartridge. This did not help either.

I tried the 8/23/07 8:27 PM post by Egizianos. It worked perfectly.

I have the Ink System Error on an HP PhotoSmart 8250. The printer was fine but I did not use it for some time and the 02 cartridges expired and the display said so and would not print (they gave me no option). After replacing the cartridges with a new set, I have the error. Chat with HP suggested buying a new printer. Outsourcing support does not help. As a long-time computer worker, I know it is only a firmware problem but HP doesn't seem to want to supply the solution. I know of no reason why a reset would only apply twice. It's possible, anything stupid is with HP, but only if they try to limit the reset count. I think class action suits make a lot of sense. I really like the printer. I am determined to find the magic buttons/procedure before I give up on this. I have a few more ideas as a result of your posts. Thanks.

Believe me I'm more confused now - like I said I bought the C7280 and it lasted two days and now my C6180 (which was sitting in the trunk of my car for two days) is working fine no error and all I had to do is just plug it in and and its still working with no problems and this has been the longest. I think maybe sometimes it needs to a rest by unplugging maybe overnight and retry it.

Re: Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by Anonymous (9/9/08 5:01 PM) reply + / -

The type of reset you are doing will not work unless you get a new set of ink cartages. By doing so will cause the printer to run its ink purging reset that cleans out the lines of all the air that is trapped in them. 99% of the time the system error we are all getting is from trapped air. The reset many people are doing will work once without needing to replace the ink cartages. But the trapped air will eventually cause the error again unless you purge it by doing the full reset. Run the reset as described in the earlier post and then before turning back on pull all the "old" ink cartages out and then turn it on and wait for it to ask you to install ink (now add the "new" set of ink and the printer will run the purge of air out of the lines).

Happy Printing!

That's exactly what I did - I changed all the cartridges and I think apparently there must have been an air bubble in the Magenta and it cleared up and I'm still printing. Thanks

Have you tried a Semi-Full Reset

l. Unplug the power from printer when the printer is powered on.

2. Press and hold # and 6 while plugging in the power cord (this took two of us)

I hope this will help.

I just crossed fingers because my black was down to 10% so I changed it and was waiting for the famous error code but it did not happen.

You know I really feel for you but try like I did unplug the machine completely for as long as you can (its not working anyway) then plug it in again and maybe like me it will start working if all the stuff does not - I mean I would not put it in the trunk of your car like mine was - it may need just a little rest. You know though I have noticed that my machine does not nofify me anymore that my inks are getting low so I have to do a test page to see how much ink is in there like yesterday with the black I ran a test page and it told me it was down to 10% so I changed it - I think when they run low they suck in air and now they don't what anyone to know so we will buy another.

You were fortuntate. I had the same yellow ink cartridge empty error and have never used anything but genuine hp ink cartridges. After going through HP TECH support they told me it is a hardware issue and cant be fixed. I need a new printer even though mine is only a little over a year old. I tried the reset in the thread here too but with no luck either. Seems like with so many people having the same problem, the right thing would be to have a recall!

I had an issue with my HP Photosmart C7280 where even though I put in a new black HP ink cartridge, I kept getting the error that the black ink cartridge was empty. The levels even showed at 100% and I could print via HP Solution Centre but not in any other application without getting the error that the black ink cartridge was empty. I tried everything and finally HP support told me to reinstall the software. Everything worked after that. Just in case that helps anyone...I spent two hours online trying to find an answer and even tried the instructions at the top of this thread and the semi-reset with no luck.

I have an HP C6280 with the same type of problem. Error message #0xc05d1281. After reading through this forum, HP's site, and another site, I felt I had tried everything. I tried an online chat and she went through all the same steps again and told me to get it serviced. I called HP as well and got the same result.

After giving up, I was packing it up to take to Best Buy and thought I'd give it one more look-sy. On the left (where the clicking was coming from), I noticed a white plastic gear - I had seen it the night before as well. I checked it once more for a possible paper chunk that could be causing the problem, and I "bumped" it. Fearing I had broken it, I then noted that it wasn't broken; on the contrary, it swiveled from front to back. Before I moved it, it was pushed to the back. I decided to pull it to it's front position and hook the printer back up. Lo' and behold, VICTORY! Then printer worked like new again.

Wow, how crazy. Not sure why the thing is mobile, and not sure how it got knocked out of position, but by simply moving it forward a half an inch, I saved myself some moolah. Funny how HP couldn't (wouldn't) tell me to do or try that. Hope it helps someone else out there.

I've been having the same problem - my printer will only print in black - I've e-mailed hp and told them I did everything but it still will not print in color - got e-mail back saying that their concern department was going to give me a live session and call me - this was two weeks ago - e-mailed back that apparently the concern department was not too concerned because they never called me got e-mail back saying they would call within 3-5 business days its been 6 days now - If there is ever a class action suit sign me up. I was thinking of the the Kodak ESP9 - saw it online the thing that really interested me was they said they you could replace the printer heads if anything went wrong.

Similiar problem. My girlfriend's computer, HP Photosmart 3310 claimed the ink was in fault. The cartridge levels are full, so that's not the problem. All attempts above either didn't apply or made no difference to the reappearing Error: 0xc18a0301. I'm quite certain that, given high enough evidence, her mother who made this purchase under two years ago would be more than happy to get back at HP for this seemingly deliberate error. I'll send information you have to her if that will be any help to rectifying the situation.

I went through the entire process twice and was finally able to clear the ink system failure. I called HP tech beforehand and they were no help. When I read the Oxc18a0201 code was told they didn't want to waste my money on tech support, it was a hardware problem, and I would need to replace printer and proceeded to offer prices for replacements. I was reviewing the online prices simultaneously and saw the prices offered were virtually the same, and they would get my printer. I guess it all depends on who answers at tech support. I'll ask for Christine in the future if I try tech support again. I will be complaining to HP. Bottom line: Don't let your ink cartridges run completely out of ink. You will get air in the lines and will get a fault.

Hi everyone,

I have a C6180 and error code 0xc18a0107 appears after I replace cyan cartridge wich was refilled.

I tried the 'clear ink failure status' procedure mentioned in the first post and it clears the code but after a few moments it appears again.

So I follow the procedure of changing the entire set of cartridges with a new fresh set and start the 'clear ink failure status' procedure and it worked perfectly. Printed a test page and it worked.

for the people that ask if the cartridges should be replace after or before the clear status procedure, what I did was follow the procedure, unplugged the printer, change the cartridges, plug it again and turn it on.

My problem start when I tried to use a refilled cartridge, and I'm seeing that most of the people reporting this problem are using refillable cartridges too, so My advice is to use only HP cartridges. I know 6 cartridges to buy is so much, but I spent $250 for this printer and I don't want to risk it again only to save no more than $20 on ink.

Hope this works for you too!!

Have a nice Day

This worked. Just used in on a C6180, which also started talking about stalled pump motor, after I tried the HP perscribed route (remove cartriges etc ( whihc didnt work). The error I got was: 0xc05d2281.
After the procedure at the top of this section, it worked, prining a self test diagnostic. I then printed the above sequence in case I need it again. That worked too :)
I always use Genuine HP cartridges.

I could not agree more. With the number of posts regarding ink failure and especially with "yellow," it is no coincidence. HP "conveniently" offers a refurbished printer when they know the one you have is out of warrenty. No problems prior. My issue was with "yellow" reading empty. The fix did not resolve this issue for me.

How could we get a suite going?

After spending several hours trying to resolve with HP website and telephone customer service, I was about to break down and buy a new printer. Then I decided to Google "HP C6180" and this excellent recommendation popped up. I followed and after 5 minutes, my printer was running again. Thank you!

Same deal here. Followed steps VERY carefully, but no go each time. Called HP AGAIN, and they pretty much said, "Tough luck. You have a hardware issue, and that's your problem! Wanna buy a new one?"

I've been buying HP for years. I am afraid to buy from a different manufacturer.

Has anyone else gone through the self repair set-up process and still gotten the "Ink system failure"?
If so, have you had it repaired?

Last resort--anyone know of a all-in-one of comparable quality?

Thank you so much!!! I printed from My HP C6180 on 3/17/09. Since the CYAN ink cartridge was low I printed using Black ink. I went to the store the same day, bought the Cyan cartridge, as well as a back and 2 other colors. When I got home and installed the Cyan cartridge I got the Ink System Failure message. I called HP and they told me the printer could not be fixed, and my warranty had expired.(I bought my printer two years ago in April) They said the problem had nothing to do with the ink cartridge replacement. They offered me the opportunity to trade in my broken printer for one of two other printers as upgrade options, one was he Officejet 7680 at a cost of $179.00, the other was the Photosmart C7280 at a cost of $224.99 after my trade-in. They would send me the new printer and a prepaid shipping label so I could send my C6180 back to them. I felt both of the printers they offered were too expensive and when I googled All-In- One printer reviews and ratings both seemed to be less than satisfactory. I ended up ordering an HP Officejet C6480, from Amazon. com. Tonight, just for curiosity, I googled "HP Ink System Failure" it led me to this posting. I followed the instructions and my C6180 is working fine. I just wish I had thought to look for a solution on the Internet before I ordered a new printer. Thank you once again!!!

Staples is giving $50 off, not 50%, but still a good deal considering they take anything. (The guy who took ours wrote in the dust that was all over it after we set it down!) We got another HP, but a 6500, with different style ink cartridges. Hopefully we won't run into the same problem that we had with the 6100 series.

Thanks so much for the help!! I've been on the phone with HP tech support for almost 50 minutes already today and she is supposed to call me back! We just purchased a HP Officejet 6500 and this error message started as soon as I put in my first cartridges! I went to the information option and it said that my magenta cartridge was low, so I put in a new one and went from there. I am going to finish installation and go from there...Thank you so much for this link. It has saved me a bunch of troubleshooting time.

My "ink system failure" message was #0xc18a0401 and HP's website only showed 0xc19ayyyy with an incorrect procedure to solve our failure. I was in the middle of printing photos when it failed. I tried all the diagnostics you tried first but got nowhere. Then I found this post on the web and now its all fixed thanks to your taking the time to post your solution for others to use. Unbelievable! Thank you. We were just about to buy a new printer tonight but found the store had closed. My husband has been trying to fix this exact problem with HP & then with a printer repair store, for over 3 weeks. HP could not help at all (he was on the phone for over 2 hrs with them) & the store wanted big bucks so it wasn't worth getting it repaired. HP owe you! although they probably made some money from people like us, who in frustration went out and bought a new printer (although we were so frustrated with HP that we were going to buy another brand). Anyway, thanks again for posting this info. - wanting to help out other people.

This worked for me and thank you because I was ready to give up and buy a new printer (NOT another HP I might add!). I followed the steps but also used all new ink cartridges (grr--these things are expensive and my other cartridges were all HP and were NOT out of ink, in fact the pink was brand new!).

I hate this printer because it uses so much ink & the ink costs so much, I would have never bought it had I known what I was in for! All I can think about is the expense and waste of all these little plastic individual color cartridges in a landfill somewhere. Grr.

The only objection I had to tossing out this crappy printer and buying a new CAnon or Brother was the idea of wasting something that was only a couple of years old. And oddly, my old HP that is 5-6 years old on the kids computer is still working just fine. Planned obsolesnce in the newer models maybe?

Anyway THANK YOU for saving me money and time on the phone with Singapore support!

I have an HP C6180 that I bought 2 years ago, it is my fourth HP and I never had a problem with any of them. I still have one and it still works like new after 8 years. My C6180 started giving me the ink system failure error message about 2 weeks ago. I tried to find answers for this problem but the tech at HP did not seem to know anymore than me.

Finally they told me that I had an internal problem that needed to be serviced, and to take it to Office Depot for repair. I called Office Depot and they told me that they do not service anything and could not understand why the HP tech told me to take it there. I finally found a service guy and took it to him, after keeping it for 5 days, he told me that it could not be fixed and he did not know what was wrong with it. I was ready to cry, as I really love this printer and did not want to buy another one.

I finally thought of Google, and I found this site and people having the same problem as I was. I followed the directions exactly and SUCCESS...My printer is up and running like new. I am so happy. Thank you Eqizianos so much for posting. I have printed this solution out and will keep it handy..Thank you again.

Boy, do I feel stupid for not checking the online community for a solution to this problem sooner. The error code on my C6180 was 0xc19ac001. I followed the HP online troubleshooting solution of powering off, removing the ink, powering on, installing the ink but I still had the problem. I called their Tech Support and he had me perform the same procedure and also asked me to clean the ink contacts with window cleaner; still had the problem. As many others have stated, he told me it was a hardware issue and the only solution was to replace the printer. He could give me a 40% discount on an ‘upgrade’ printer that used the same type of ink. He came back with a C8180, $400 list, $300 discounted. When I told him that wasn’t 40% off he said this was a ‘premium upgrade’ and he could only offer 25%. Luckily I didn’t bite, primarily because I thought I only had 1 new black ink in the closet.

I bought a nice Canon MX700 for $99 at Staples, which I am going to keep. Then I found 2 more new HP black inks in the closet so my interest in fixing the C6180 increased. I’ve only printed 3,087 pages so it shouldn’t be worn out. I pulled off all of the plastic covers hoping to find a spring had fallen off or something easy, but no luck.

That’s when I found this post. I only had to do the reset (hold CANCEL & OK while powering up) and the problem cleared. I don’t know how long this fix will last but I do know I’ll NEVER buy another HP printer after their unethical practices.

Thanks for the help !!!

I went through the process multiple times to clear the hardware error "ink System failure'. After clearing the error, I could print one document and I would get the error again. I cleared the "ink system failure" about five more times and now it works.

What happened. I have mostly new and filled ink cartridges. I agree with a poster who surmised that there was air in the ink deliver system and by printing a few documents it pushed the air out and the printer finally works!

So hang in there.............

Hi,
I had a similar problem with ink system failure.I took free tech support from Deenselectronics.com who are an HP service facility.I completely took the unit apart and noticed that there is a white gear of the ink system that is driven by a belt , which was loose and had come out of the bushing/ shaft. I reinstalled this and now it works but dont know how long it will last. .You guys can try is simple fix . Hopefully it helps.

With power unplugged, I replaced all cartridges, plugged it back in and reset the printer. After about 2 minutes of noise, it worked. The problem as it has been said must be air in the line.

Thanks for the original fix. It wasn't until I'd punched in the codes that I saw that it was a once or twice only fix - but I had done everything else recommended by HP without a result, so I felt I had nothing to lose! It worked for me.
They must have something built in that recognises non-HP inks, and makes this happen. Swine!

Please can somone help - I had a paper jam in which the paper came back through the centre of the printer (on the inside). I cleared the paper and then got the Ink System Failure message OXc05d1281 - as the cyan ink cartridge was low I changed this before attempting to print again. Still have the Ink Failure Message. Have tried to reset along with changing all ink cartridges before restarting the printer. As someone else mentioned I have checked the white cogs to the left hand side of the printer as am also getting a Carrige Jam message? Should these cogs move? If so does the smaller one face the forward or back?

Please can someone help as I desperately need the printer working for business.

THis forum saved my C6180, which had run well for two years until I got the dreaded "pump stalled" error. I had never used non-HP ink, but had recently let one of the cartridges run all the way to empty before replacing it.

After contacting an online tech service, I had tried the process for a software reset at the top of this post. I didn't work and the tech told me it was a hardware issue that he couldnt resolve. I was prepared to buy a new printer when an IT guy at work directed me to this site.

After reading all the way through the forum I unplugged the printer for two days, then replaced all of the cartridges with brand new ones and turned the printer back on. As soon as it was certain that the printer was functioning again I reinstalled my original cartridges and will save the full ones for any future "pump stalled" emergency. It's running perfectly so far.

HI I have a c6180 and just experienced the same problem. I have always only used hp genuine inks but after replacing my inks today got this error 0xc18a0001

I did a hard reset by this method found online also:

1) press and hold "help" + "ok" keys
2) un-plug the printer, and while still holding the "help" + "ok" keys plug the printer back in.
3) press the power button if the printer doesn't restart automatically (which for me it did)
4) continue to hold the "help" + "ok" keys untill the unit powers itself back down takes aprox 1 minute.
5) release the keys and power back up. the printer will display "message “USE POWER BUTTON TO SHUTDOWN THE PRINTER” followed by “PRESS OK TO CONTINUE”. Press OK. The Printer will start the “ONE TIME INK INITIALIZATION PROCESS”. Allow this process to complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process was complete I was back in business.

This problem has occurred three times in as many days. I used the first solution twice and it worked. This last time I couldn't power off, so I did the "help and OK", unplug, plug back in routine. This seems to have worked.
I'm only using HP ink cartridges!

I'm glad to see this thread is still active... Google -- and balky HP C6180 brought me here.

I have been having this problem with the printer for a few weeks now (the "Ink system failure" message). By following the steps at the very top of this thread, I have managed to restart the printer, and at the moment I'm not getting any error messages. It is also not trying repeatedly to restart itself.

I managed to print a "Selt Test Diagnostic Page," so the printer seems to be working "internally.

But still the printer will not print any actual documents.

When I try to print even the simplest of documents, the printer utility window seems to find the printer (it's hardwired into the computer I'm typing from now via USB) and commences to send the document to the printer.

But once it gets to "printing page 1, 100% complete..." -- then nothing happens. Nothing prints. No whirring of gears or gnashing of belts, nothing, nada. It sits there, telling me "100% complete" and doing nothing.

Oh, crap.. as I'm typing this, I got the "Ink System Failure" message again. With "Error 0xc19a0035" I'll have to go back and check now... is that the error that HP has been saying is "hardware failure, buy a new machine?"

Air in the line? These are all OEM cartridges. How could I have printed a successful Diagnostic Page even ONCE if there was air in the lines, and still get this "Ink System Failure" msgs?

I mean, after the last failure, I turned the machine off, unplugged it, restarted it, and printed another Self Diag test. So the printer WORKS.

Unless I actually try to print something.

Now what do I do?

Thanks,

--PS

0xc18a0001 error again!!!

I had the same failure again last month and I had use ONLY HP INK, reload the print driver and re-attach the printer to the network.
The net is that this error is HP's way of making you use their ink. The error message should say "Error cause by not using HP ink", they should admit to this and let the rest of us determine if we want to buy a machine that will only accept HP cartridges.

Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by cwhit (10/12/09 7:22 PM) reply + / -
I am providing this purely for others as yet another (slightly different) history troubleshooting.

I had the same "Ink System Failure" message, except (as several others above) the specific code was 0xc18a0107, also on a Photosmart C6180. I normally refill my own cartridges without any problem, but of late I have not have time to refill the colored cartridges. I have been using ONLY black copies/printing, with a full, refilled Black cartridge which has worked fine. However, apparently some of the colors are used anyway, Yellow, Cyan, and Magenta became depleted during "black only" use. At that point I got the dreaded "Ink System Failure" message of the thread - first time, I was previously unaware.

A Google search led me here.

I tried multiple attempts following the procedure. I also used the Tools>Restore Factory Defaults. I also attempted hot water swabs on the print heads, which have helped other HP Inkjet Printers I have had in the past. None of these were successful. I finally broke down and purchased a set of HP Cartridges, the high cost being against my religion. I imagine most readers are aware that the Cartridge chips on the print head tell the printer the cartridge is new/full, which is one way HP keeps selling cartridges.

Installed New HP Cartridges with machine off. Error message remained (see following). Followed procedure at beginning of thread, except that when I got to the following point:

The "Ink System Failure" message was still displayed. However, I "OK'd" out of that (message temporarily removed), and for grins attempted to print a test page. BONGO!! it worked. I subsequently aligned the heads to a) verify and b) make sure it was all working, and it worked fine. I turned off the printer, and restarted it with no error message.

a) contrary to some postings I tried the procedure multiple times, apparently without permanent damage; however it might be different for other users, especially with a different specific coded error message. b) even though the refillable cartridges I have, have modified chips which indicate "full", apparently once the error message appears, at least in my case, only the genuine HP cartridges work. c) I returned to my refillable cartridges once it was working, in the same condition they were when the error message persisted. They also worked fine, i.e. once "fixed" mine operated normally with non-HP cartridges, though only the HP cartridges enabled the fix itself.

It's been a frustrating day, but this thread saved me, and maybe my slightly different experience may be of use if the procedure does not work first time.

Re: Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by Anonymous (11/9/09 5:03 PM) reply + / -
Put a dab of vasiline on the relevant ink cartridge seals ("o" rings).

If are not getting a hardware error code, it could be just air in the line (of any cartridge). The fix as described by diane53 (pull out cord hold # & 6 and put the cord back in) causes the printer to run the ink pump when it restarts and hence purge the air out of the line without doing a hardware reset.

I had continued repeat problems with no black prining. HP replaced my first C6180 under warranty. The #&6 fix eventually stopped working. I figured there could be a faulty seal letting air into the system. I smeared a very small amount of vasiline on teh o rings of the black cartridge, being careful not let any get into the ink supply holes. I cleaned these out with a cotton tip bud. Reinstalled the cartridge, restarted the printer with the #6 method and have not had a problem since.

My friend just gave me a "broken" Photosmart c6180 that she was about to throw away after changing the cartridges twice, taking it to HP and getting the same "sorry it is impossible to repair, and too bad the warranty is just over" message from the HP service center that a lot of the people seem to have experienced.

So, I powered it up, and indeed error code 0xc05d1281 kept coming up. So i tried all the different resets suggested in this thread, but still was getting the error.

Thanks to one of the notes, I decided to take it appart, and to discover that some parts (white plastic gears) had fallen off from somewhere. Searching where they could fit, I quickly found out that they fell off from the print cart (the one that moves back and forth). I simply snapped the 2 gears back in place, put everything back together, powered it up, and tada! it is now working perfectly fine.

My moto has always been "if it is broken you can't make it worse by trying to take it appart". So my advice, before you throw anything away , just it give a try.

Hope it works for some of you, and if anyone from HP customer service reads this: "shame on you".

The guy who posted the 9/4/09 message saved me from buying more ink. The lead thread might have worked, but I didn't have to try it. I read everyone's post and found them very amusing. HP tried to sell me a new machine too!! My wife was saying I was spending more time on trying to fix the machine then it was worth. By the way, my error was "cannot print".

feeling real dumb: the instructions state:
A. - Press and hold the “*” key.
B. - Press the “#” key and release both keys.
Display should say “Enter Special Key Combo”
C. - Press and release in sequence the “1”, “2” and “3” buttons.

?On what screen do I do this? I hit Shift-8 to get "*", continue to hold shift and hit 3 to get the *, then release both keys: I get nothing. Where is it suppose to trigger a display of “Enter Special Key Combo” ???

HELP HELP HELP.... I have a c7280 all-in-one. I have been paying a lot for the replacement cartridges, but started to hang onto the black empty cartridges to trade them for full ones. No doubt that the ones I get back are full in fact probably twice as full as an originally store bought one, but the machine will not accept them. Still says "the printer does not have enough ink to ensure printer health. The empty ink cartridge(s) must be replaced to resume".... How do I get around having to buy HP Genuine (half full) cartridges? Is there a quick fix to reset this printer to accept these refills? I've read the above comments/answers and tried all except the paperclip idea, but had no such luck... If anyone knows or has the answers I am looking for, please write back or email me @ mistyflynn@hotmail.com
P.S.
Not partial to HP, but on the verge of buying another new printer.

If you do a class action, I want in on it.
I had a C6180 that quit because of an ink system failure. HP support said they didn't know what to do except get it serviced or get another printer. I found a barely used C6180 on E-Bay. After 2 weeks the "new" printer had the same ink system failure message that the first one had. I found this post on the internet and tried the procedure at the beginning of the post and it worked. Then I see that it will only work once.
Definitely a case of design flaw.

Thank You very much! I too had been quite frustrated due to being in the middle of Scrap Book pictures for Christmas and having just purchased 2 new combo (ink and paper) packs. Which left me with more than 40 HP-#02 cartridges. After 2 days I am back and ready to print once again.

Re: Re:Same ? by Anonymous (12/13/09 4:36 AM) reply + / -
If you dont know how to press the # and * keys its probably because you dont have a C6180 (main response on this post). The c6180 is printer/scan/fax. It has a keyboard with numbers 1 to 9 + "#", "0" and "*" keys on the bottom row. I notice on a picture of the c6280, that it does not appear to have a keypad, and hence no # and * keys.

A few days ago I had the problem re-occur. Contrary to some of the posts here, I had the same experience clearing the problem using the same instructions, which I had printed out for future reference. Now I keep them on the top of my desk. I saw nothing to tie the problem to the yellow cartridge being low. To note, I use only Genuine HP #02 cartridges. I sense the problem is brought on by the quanity of prints put into the spool. 10 is a good number and print properly. More than 15 and that is when my problem occurs. MERRY cHRISTMAS TO ALL!

The first time I encountered the problem, I tried rebooting and disconnecting. It did not work. I turned off the printer and unplugged it. A few weeks gone by, I turned on the printer; the error code went away by itself. It worked for a while until I needed to replace the light magenta cartridge. The Ink System Failure message came back again. I tried the reset as suggested on the post and also replaced all ink cartridges. I did the Cancel + OK on the power up. It did not work either. My error code is 0xc19ac001 with support code R0625M. From what I read so far and experienced myself, I don’t believe this is mechanical failure, but I ran out of ideas. I would not buy another HP printer that uses the same ink system. My other HP Photosmart 7960 has not had any issue like this. If anybody has a solution to my particular error code and support code, please help.

Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by arowhena (12/30/09 4:20 PM) reply + / -
Well guys, it looks like you are all new to this piece of crap!

I will never buy another HP!

Basically, your problems with the C6180 are just beginning.

My messages and HP help went much the same as the rest of you. But, over this last year have progressed into a “turn on,” “turn off,” “turn on cycle.”

# and 6 buttons do work

“help” and “OK” buttons do work
However, eventually it all ends up the same. Lately I have let the silly thing cycle for an hour or so and then it works as advertised. Bizarre!

Interestingly, my problem began suddenly, and each time I got it working I would try and reconnect to my Ethernet and then the whole thing would start again. Just plain weird! Doesn’t HP have a quality control department!

I plan on leaving this piece of garbage out on the curb – good luck to the person who gets to it first.

I plan on buying a non-HP printer for less than $70 – trust me – it will be a marked improvement over this poorly designed piece of junk!!

Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by poppawayne (12/30/09 8:05 PM) reply + / -
Arowhena - I am sorry to hear of you dislike for HP. Have you tried using it in wireless mode instead of ethernet mode? I would probably feel the same under the same circumstances, but that is not the case for me. This one has been in heavy use during 2009 and moderate use for the 2-3 years prior. My previous HP was an all-in-one HP85. It was more than 10 years old when the scanner light became weak, and I gave it away to a teenager I know, who as far as I know, is still using it for printing. Besides these, I have had 4 other HP's that I can remember, which I had no other problem with other than just plain being worn out after many years of use.

If this one gets to the point of being un-reliable, I will most certainly consider another HP before any other brand. And No, I don't have any financial interest or stock in HP. I am just a satisfied owner and user of HP printers.

FOR ALL NEW READERS HERE, you need to go back to the original posting here and read it carefully. If you follow it closely -- it does work!!

PoppaWayne

PS - As a note, I leave my printer power on - 24-7 and 12 months a year and it is connected wireless mode

Just an added thought on something which may be the cause of continued failure --- In the original post from Egizianos on 8/23/07 --
"Christina: 9. Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.
CustomerName: done
Christina: Fine.
Christina: 10. Wait 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then plug the power cable into the wall outlet first and then into the back of the printer."

The plug was into a power strip which was hard to reach but lying down on the floor, I was able to unplug it. There is a small light on the printer end of the cord which very very slowly went out after being fully unpluged. I waited much longer than the 30 seconds to make sure any residual power had drained. If the plug is not fully removed from the circuit or is not left out long enough, it could cause or re-establish the same senario. Just food for thought!

Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by arowhena (1/7/10 6:59 AM) reply + / -
Poppawayne, by the term, "Ethernet" I did mean "wireless."

The point is moot now. My C6180 is now stuck in a repetitive cycle of OFF and ON. There is no fixing this thing now. HP need to rethink their manufacturing sources, their quality control (hardware and software), and their Customer service.

A recession is no time to experiment by selling devices that fail so conveniently after the warranty runs out.

This is a basic failure in senior management. If quality control has failed so completely with the C6180 then most probably it has failed right across the line. New management may save HP yet -- but at what point will the Board of Directors become aware of this looming fiscal disaster. Did I mention we are in a recession?

I will not purchase another HP -- ever! At my summer home I have another HP printer (I don't remember what model), but guess what -- it doesn't work either!

Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by PedroStephano (1/19/10 2:24 PM) reply + / -
Demy - just a point for you from reading this thread in entirety - I think the most important thing is the POWER OFF bit - allows the printer to "de-charge" of all electricity and supports the memory reset that you've achieved by following the other previous steps..........
9.Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.
10. Wait 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then plug the power cable into the wall outlet first and then into the back of the printer.

When I did this last night I did it this way:-
Power off button on printer.
Power off at mains.
Plug out of back of printer.
Waited for at least a few minutes. (did some You Tube!)
Replace plug in back of printer.
Power on at mains.
Power on printer button. Then step 12 etc etc etc.

Do hope you get it sorted - please post your success or otherwise of the "All Fresh Inks" solution, as I'm living in dread of the next "ink system failure" for my HP as I've had two.....

BTW can anyone recommend a good All-In-One printer (A N Other brand?!?!?)

Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by Demy (1/20/10 5:13 PM) reply + / -
The new ink did not work. Also be careful at removing the ink and turn on the power with out ink as suggested by someone above. Now the message is clear but I do not have any printing.(Either with new or old ink. Both sets are full) ...and as I am typing the message is back. The printer had lived 4 years... I think is time for a new one. Good by HP Photosmart C6180

I had the same thing and I called the support
they had me do a full reset by disconnecting the printer > pressing and holding "#" and "9" > then reconnect the power
This allowed me to print but showed my brand new yellow cartridge as being very low.
Basically the tech said the printer is breaking down and I will need another soon.

My first encounter with this problem occured just before 12/12/09 and the first time I tried the fix found at the beginning of this string, was on 12/12/09. It worked until 12/24 and re-occured and it quickly responded to the fix once more. Today is 02/06/10 and there has not been another time since 12/24/09. I am someone who has the desire to find out what causes problems like this and how it is that the fix will work for some users and not for others. How to start this quest? I guess the best way would be for me to state how I use my HP C6180 and what I have discovered in the process of my daily use. So here goes -- I will refer to my C6180 as my HP.
1. My HP is not connected by wire to either my desktop or laptop, it is a "Wireless" connection.
2. Being wireless, my signal to my HP is encrypted to keep it secure.
3. I am using updated software from the HP site.
4. I use my HP to print almost anything that is printable on the internet, my Corel Word Perfect 8 and other software.
5. I print pictures and during November and December 2009, printed about 600 4"-x-6" pictures for scrapbooks using HP paper and ink.
6. I leave my HP power on full time excepting very bad lightning storms.
7. I watch my ink supply notices carefully and try to change them before they go completely dry.
8. Other than using my HP for pictures, I also use it for scanning and copying. I had previously used it for faxing but seldom have the need to wire it for that.
9. I do not overload the spooling for printing. I limit my 4"-x-6" printing to 10 to 15 at a time maximum.
10. I suggest checking your plugstrip if you are using one. This past week our TV was acting freeky and it turned out that the plugstrip was NOT making good contact with the TV plug. I replaced it and the problems disappeared.

Most of the posts here at this thread do not give very much information. You can use this post as a guide as to the type of information helpful in determining a solution to this problem. If you wish to e-mail me direct, that is fine too.

Happy printing with your HP C6180, if it is up and running; if not, let work on the problem together.

I do hope this post does help at least one person with this problem.

Wayne

It is always good to hear about someone who is helped through this thread on the C6180. It sounds like the fix sometimes works for other similar models as well.

How many times have you wished that you could talk with someone who has also found themselves in the same or simular situation? Maybe so or maybe not exactly the same situation, but you learn there may be hope. Fixyourownprinter.com has obviously been created with this thought in mind. Here they bring out the brighter, smarter minds found out in the web to help us with our problems. I am 68 yrs. old and I can tell you that I am NOT one of the smarter "Bulbs" in the pack but, I will also tell you that I am not a quitter and I will dog a problem until either I fix it or it goes away.

If you don't try and try again, and over without giving up - you lose! Don't listen to those here who try half-heartedly and give up. When you give up, you are then a loser.

There is a treasure of information here and throughout the web. Why would you ever want to stop looking for answers to problems, when there are resources available?

I am really sorry to hear that you are giving up. I would suggest that you get the printer of your choice. As far as the HP, either set it aside for a period of time (couple of months) or give it to someone who may be able to fix it for you. Then/Or donate it to such as the Salvation Army or Good Will. They will giive you a tax receipt for your donation.

I am on either my 5th or 6th HP printer and have only experienced one problem (My HP-85 needed the scaner bulb to be replaced) and I didn't wish to spend the money. I had a free standing scanner so I continued using it for the other functions with no additional problems.

I did however have a Epson printer which couldn't seem to keep the ink inside. It consistantly leaked all over. That is one which I quickly dumped and I went back to HP.

I wish you well with whatever Brand you do choose.

How convenient/profitable is that for HP? Thanks to the Office Depot gentleman who suggested this website.

Steps to do a reset on a Photosmart C6280. It didn't solve the problem for me, but it might solve problems for others.

1) Press Red Eye Removal & Print Photos button simultaneously

2)Enter Special Key Combo is displayed on the screen.
Press and release in sequence "Red Eye Removal", "Print Photos", "Red Eye Removal"
Display should say "Support" and display the FW rev XXXXX.

3) Press Right Arrow button untill "Reset Menu" is displayed. Press OK.

4) Press Right arrow untill "Semifull Reset" is displayed.

5) Press OK.

I have an HP Photosmart C-6180 All-in-One
Printer-Fax-Scanner-Copier.
On the front panel welcome screen there appears the icons showing the ink cartridges.
Does this mean that the ink levels are low, and that I should replace the cartridges? I hardly use the multi-colour function!
And if I have to replace one cartridge (which would probably be the black one), does that mean that I must replace all of them?
I would appreciated any assistance and advice, please.
THANK-YOU !!!

Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by iancam (3/19/10 8:53 PM) reply + / -
Hi Alan,
The ink levels on the printer screen are for general guidance only, just so you can keep an eye on the ink levels. You will receive a message on your computer screen when you need to change a cartridge. And you only need to replace one cartridge at a time.
Hope this helps.

I got the Ink System Failure and tried the fix from the 10/12/09 post but with a bit of twist. So far so good (but the day is just starting) Oh and BTW, I've never used anything but HP printer cartridges so I believe this us unrelated to what cartridge is used.
Here's the fix that seems to be working:

1.) On the front of the printer console press the "SETUP" button.
2.) Scroll down to "TOOLS" using the down arrow on the console.
3.) Then Scroll down to "Restre factory Defaults" and press ok.
4.) Exit the "SETUP" menu.
5.) Go back ino the "SETUP" Menu gain and Scroll down to "TOOLS" again.
6.) This time select the "ClEAN PRINT HEAD" option (I'm scared of the Q-Tip fix as a tiny piece of fiber left on a print head might really send this machine over the edge)
7.) Printer will start it's usual cranking and grinding.

This time I got a message that my Magenta cartridge needed to be replaced (This was the first I'd heard about this color in MONTHS)
8.) I replaced the Magenta cartridge and pressed OK.
Machine seems to be working.

In the future, I will go first to SETUP > TOOLS > DISPLAY INK LEVELS before I try anything. I'm wondering if this prob we're all having is caused b/c there is an empty ink cartridge that is not properly "reporting" to the ink sensor.
Just a thought....Hope this helps you out. My day is just starting so I may be back reporting that this fix did NOT do the trick.
Mary

Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by iancam (3/26/10 5:21 PM) reply + / -
Hi Mary,
Thanks for another 'take' on this problem. I'll give it a try because I've found that the routine contained in the original post on this thread is only a temporary fix. I have also found that turning the machine off and on again does the same thing and saves having to go through that tedious routine. But the failure comes back same day anyway, either way. I also found that turning the machine off when not in use reduces the opportunities for the INK SYSTEM FAILURE mechanism to activate.
I've been waiting for someone to come up with a permanent fix - let's hope yours in the one!
Regards,
Ian.

2 1/2 years later and this post is still going strong! Halleluiah your instructions, and God leading me to them :), fixed my computer! What is with the yellow ink?? That is when I had the problem too. And I DID run my printer while it was out, so I guess that was a user error problem. Note to self DO NOT LET THE PRINTER RUN OUT OF INK! I usually keep a back up set, but this time I did not and it cost me a week of trying to figure it out. Thank you thank you thank you for the poster that took the time to let us all know :)

HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by Egizianos (8/23/07 8:27 PM) reply + / -
I am posting this in the hopes that it may help other lost lambs like myself as I was unable to find this answer on my own searching the web.

Re: Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by poppawayne (4/5/10 9:03 AM) reply + / -
Good Morning Ray --

My C6180 did that when I had the ink supply problem. Please READ all below before doing anything else!

FIRST, start with this simple procedure. Turn on the printer and when it goes into the on/off cycle, quickly remove the power plug from the back of the printer when it goes into the "OFF" part of the cycle. You have to be quick because you probably have less than 3 seconds to do it, so have you hand on the plug at the machine before it actually goes off. SECOND, FULLY remove the transformer from the power source, ie. wall plug, power strip, etc. Don't just power off the plug strip. Leave the power fully disconnected from both ends for at least 15 minutes.

Now you are ready to reconnect -- first plug in the transformer (NOTE the little light on the printer end of the cable, it should be lit.) Plug into the back of the printer and it should be off until you turn it on. It may not clear the ON/OFF problem but it is the first step in doing so. Please try this first! I will look back to find what I also did to clear the On Board Memory in the printer and will print the steps here for you. My printer has not had any problems since I cleared the printer On Board Memory.

I believe this may be the step I was looking for. This is found in the HP Troubleshooting section of the on-line help. Copy this link and paste into your search window at the top of your computer screen.
www.hp.com/support . There you find the following. Please follow their on screen instructions both as below and on your printer screen.
--------------------------------------------------
PERFORMING A SEMI-FULL RESET OF THE ALL-IN-ONE

1. Use the On button to turn on the product.
2. Remove the power cord from the product.
3. Press and hold the # and 6 buttons.
4. While holding the buttons down, connect the power cord to the product.
5. Continue to hold the buttons down until the color graphics display becomes blank, then release the buttons.
6. Use the On button to turn on the product. The reset information appears on the color graphics display.
--------------------------------------------
They do have some good instructions there but sometimes it requires a good amount of digging to get to them.

Good Computing and Printing.

Hi Poppawayne: I appreciate your encouragement, but I have exhausted every resource I know for resolving this wireless loss issue. Can you give me guidance as to where else I might go to get a solution: Here's my original post:

Has anyone addressed the problem of completely losing the wireless capability after this hard reset? Printer now prints with ethernet cord, but not wirelessly. I am glued to my home office for printing now, where I use to click on "print" on my laptop from the kitchen and my printer would print in my office. I have contacted Bob Rankin, Leo Leport, HP. No one knows. Please respond with solution. Thank you! Don't want to buy another printer just to get wireless.

Hi again WineFlirt -

A few questions to see where you problem may lay,and some possible solutions.

1.. Are you using Windows XP?

2.. Do your have your HP C6180 manual?

3.. You said you did a hard reset, did you turn your "Wireless radio" back on? (pg 23 in manual)

Possible solutions.

4.. You may have lost your WEP encryption and/or your SSID, and will have to re-enter them into your C6180. (pg 20 in manual)

5.. If you don't have or can't find your manual, I will look for one on the Web.

Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by WineFlirt (7/13/10 2:45 PM) reply + / -
Hi PoppaWayne! So glad to hear from you!! I've been following your advice on this blog back to your 12/09 post. Here are answers to your questions:
1) Yes. Windows XP Professional Service Pak 3
2) Yes. I have my C6180 manual.
3) Yes. Radio back on.
4) WEP and SSID reconfirmed.

After doing a hard reset,(I followed the heycompman hard reset directions noted in his 11/08/09 post)I do the wireless setup from the Network Menu on the printer. Everything for wireless set up confirms ok: radio goes on, ssid confirms (wireless router is found); I re-input WEP and get a "network connected!" message. When I try to print a wireless configuration confirmation page, the radio goes off, I hear a huge clunk noise-like something fatal just happened or the bottom of the printer dropped out - the screen goes black and then comes up with the HP blank blue screen which cycles on and off with the Improper Shutdown message.
I do a hard reset again, don't set up wireless or turn radio on, connect with an ethernet cord and can print for about 15 minutes until I'm thrown back in the cycle abyss of blue screen and Improper Shutdown Message. It seems when the radio goes on or I try to print after wireless set up or I try to print a wireless confirmation page, I can't print. The wireless is the culprit here. Thanks so much for all your effort and time to help!

Hi again, again --

When you say "Ethernet" are the meaning the USB connection? If you have the USB plugged in, remove it.

When you try to print wireless, are you using your desktop or your laptop? If using your desktop, set it up once again and this time use your laptop to test the wireless connection.

I had that "clunking" sound also when mine went down.
At the moment I don't remember exactly what I did to clear it, but it worked and I am still up and running. The following may help.

This is the reset procedure from the HP site ..
http://h10025.www1.hp.com

Copy it and place it into your browser. Read it over thoroughly, even more than once to fully have it understood. I must have read it over four or five times before using it.

After step 1

When you pull the power plug from the printer in step 2, remove the power transformer from where it is plugged in. Let it set for 15 MINUTES minimum before plugging in first the transformer, then the cord to the printer in step 4. It may sound crazy but it did work; evidently the power transformer and cord still holds residual voltage. Note: You may have a bad plug strip if it is plugged into one.

Then go on with the remaining steps.

At the bottom of that procedure, you will also find other possible solutions and links for various problems.

Just a note here - I have a Wii which would not come on. I had it plugged into a powerstrip and I thought a spike muct have killed it. On line I found that I needed to remove it and let it be disconnected for more than 15 minutes. It worked!

The only time my printer is without power is when our power does down. Sometimes it is the simple things which cause the biggest problems.

Have Fun,

PoppaWayne

Good Evening, poppawayne,

1)Ethernet cord is not a USB cord. This blue cord plugs into the top port at the back of the printer and into the back port of my laptop, which is like a large phone jack connection, not USB. I have one USB cord plugged into my laptop to control my wireless keyboard and mouse.
2)Laptop not pc.
3)I'll do the homework you suggested and keep you posted. I have not been unplugging from the power strip. Will try again.
Thank you!

Well, poppawayne, I think we'll have to "call it a day". No, let's call it a year--or, so it seems, after spending 17-25 hours at trying to resolve this loss of wireless issue.

I did as you suggested. I removed the power cord from the power source for over an hour to remove any residual power. I reset up my wireless by means of the Wireless Set up on the computer. I plugged into a brand new power strip. As soon as I attempted to print, I got the deadly "clunk" sound, the black screen, then the cycling HP blank blue screen with the Improper Shutdown Message over and over. I am so disappointed to say there is no fix. Off to Staples tomorrow to buy a Brother Printer. This HP printer still works for at least 15 minutes when hard wired, but not with wireless, which is the primary reason I bought this computer. I now know HP is not in the printer business, but in the ink cartridge business. They do not care about return business. Hopefully, our non-allegiance may prove to change their organization. I have worked for Fortune 500 companies for the last 28 years that used nothing but HP. But that relationship is now ended. Thank you for all your efforts. Good bye, good luck.

Poppawayne:

When you say you are "up and running".....are you printing wirelessly or hard wired? Reading the 53 pages of this blog,it appears that no one is concerned about or using the wireless capability on their printer. I can't be the only one. Just seems it's not a priority...... Good Night.......

Hi WineFlirt -

I am very sorry that you are unable to use your chosen HP C6180 and that it has given you so much trouble and aggravation. I do wish you well with your new choice. I am also sorry that I couldn't help you.

Yes, indeed I do use my C6180 ONLY in the wireless mode. It sits close to my desktop computer and accross the room from my wireless router. I often use my laptop wireless in the dining area, some 60 feet away. When friends and relatives visit and want to "hook up", I give them my WEPA code and they all have used it wirelessly.

I believe that since I last had any problem, probably last December, it has been powered on and in operation without problems. I use it for scrapbook pictures, printing e-mails, recipes and most anything on the web. It has been very reliable for me for over 4 years.

Maybe it's just the air here in North Carolina! :)

Hi WineFlirt -

I apologize for missing your post July 13. I hope you didn't think that I was saying that you would not know the difference between a Ethernet and USB plug. I have noticed here that some refer to USB as other types of plugs and that is why I asked.

With this info I wanted to say that I am not plugged into the C6180 with any plug at all except for the power plug.

Also, I do update the software for my C6180 through the HP Site to keep it current.

God Bless and I hope your new printer works great for you.

Well, again, PoppaWayne, I do so look forward to your replies!

You are always are positive and very helpful. Given your suggestions, perhaps I should take a kindler, gentler approach to my C6180 (because I so want to love it as others do, including yourself.)

Note: After the hard reset, I get hard-wired printing for about 1/2 hour (still no wireless--I've given up on that one for now, until I can buy a new wireless printer--then I get the Ink System message. Now I just power down and up again and can continue to print for short periods.

So, if you're only using the power plug, are you printing wirelessly? Not clear.

WineFlirt -

I have NO wires, cables, etc. going to my HP C6180 for data of any kind. The only wire there is between the printer and the power transformer.

I am 100% WIRELESS.....

It sounds as though you still want to work on your C6180. If so, Good!

If I were you at this point, I would go to Pg. 73 in my Manual under "TROUBLESHOOTING AND SUPPORT". I would locate my instalation disk and follow the written instructions for removing the software. I would make sure the printer was disconnected from the computer. Then I would restart my computer to complete all that I had done.

Chapter 2 gives me good instructions for connecting to a wireless network (802.11)so this is what I would use to re-install the program.

An intergrated wireless network WLAN, is the best for best wireless security. WEP is good but WPA is even better.

I would make notes as I followed each step.

Pg. 22 in the Manual tells me how to manage my network setting in the HP6180 All-In-One and I should be able to print a wireless test page.

All this is done without any data wires to the printer.

I would grab a good cup of tea, coffee or a cool refreshing glass of wine, nothing that will make me sleepy, and closely read the Network Setup Chapter. (And make Notes.)

I can't believe your C6180 is a lost cause.

I would enjoy the wine and the reading. Even some soft music would be good!

PoppaWayne (Again, this is what "I" would do.) :) Hmm, it's a lot of "I"s, isn't it? Sorry!

This HP C6180 really has it "in" for me and I am now officially paranoid about my relationship with this printer---yup, I said relationship, so you know I'm off the "deep end" !

I uninstalled all the software as you suggested, followed the manual to the "tee". The HP messages on my monitor confirmed that the software was completely de-installed. Now my computer will not even recognize that I have a "D" file or CD disk in my computer for reinstallation. Unbelievable. Yet, my printer when plugged back in is behaving in the same cycle mode of Ink Failure System to Improper Shutdown Message.

The problem is now so convoluted, I can't even begin to know where to start to fix this.

If you have any final words, I will be burying this HP C6180 to rest in peace, so I can move forward.

Thanks and good-night.

That's what HP wants us to think, but it's obvious from previous posts that people have managed to fix the problem more than once.

HP is full of BULLSHIT and I am surprised that they have not be sued over this yet. Here in the UK layers are very expensive, but I am sure that in other countries they are not. HP tries to make people buy new printers. In many cases, mine included, there is nothing wrong with the printer. I have a C6180 and get the same error message. I forced it to do a self print test and a nozzle clean and it works great. It's the software that LOCKS the printer down! This should definitely be illegal.

Was getting C6180 Ink System Failure and was resetting, but now into on/off cycling and can't seem to break it long enough with boot resets to do *#123. My C6180 Ink System Failure started after a ink cartridge change (don't recall the color) and has always been HP ink. I don't recall the hex number on the message, but the resets would only last a mater of hours.

I'll give the machine a few more tries, but I think it is toast!

This is third hp product I've been screwed on. First a 5300 scanner when no Vista driver (and years later W7 has XP mode, but I can no longer find the power supply). A Color LJ3600n with no W7 driver (HP says use Vista driver), but didn't play nice with the C8180 unless the 3600 was configure as the default (but it was actually the remote in the basement printer. And now this 6180 problem.

Well I guess the 3600 situation self rectified itself when the 6180 croaked.

So I'm here to vent ... HP is not your father's HP when they actually cared and were proud of their equipment ... basic HP is products and there management are POS using their own failures to force us to buy expensive ink or support time just to give something one last try at resuscitation.

I will never by another HP product!

HP can open a new chapter and set of errors code in honor of its latest failure to deliver thus cause the loss of mind-share and customers. These would be the Leadership System Failure codes and would be in honor of the newly departed Mark Hurd.

Code Oxc0001 is main failure ... return to kindergarten.
Code Oxc0101 is major flaw ... return to mom for re-manufacture.
Code Oxc1101 is major flaw ... return to mom for refurbishment.
Code Oxc1111 is major flaw ... fire their ass.

Well, after many e-mails, expletives, due diligence, I have moved on, and also decided to never invest in HP again. I tossed the 6180 and all the frustration that went with it and purchased a new laser Brother printer. Predictable, problem free, fast,no software glitches.

I don't acknowledge HP in my world any longer, and I make it a priority to let anyone know about HPs issues, when I'm inquired about what printer to purchase from associates, friends, etc.

Thanks for all your help fellow bloggers, but life is way too short to allow HP to hang up your valuable time, weekends and life to invest in trying to save their equipment, that won't be saved.

Good bye and happy printing elsewhere!

For sometime now I have felt frustrated in not being able to help with needed solutions in this thread on the HP Ink Supply Problem. Many have posted that what is shown here has helped but also many have not been helped and for this I truely feel their frustration. This C-6180 All-in-One printer has shown NOT to be reliable for the everyday user who NEEDS a reliable Printer right out of the box, and for it to be "Plug and Play".

Although my C-6180 continues to serve me well, I can no longer recommend HP as my printer of choice for others as a reliable printer.

God Bless and my hope is that all here will continue researching for their choice of a FULLY RELIABLE , everyday printer.

This message is concerning black ink failing...I was ready to "junk" my printer (like many other have on here) because it stopped printing in black ink. This seems to be a major problem of this printer. Shame on HP for making such shoddy equipment, which is a bit pricey at that...well, anyway back to the "solution" After doing lots of research, I tried cleaning the printheads. I cycled this several times (at least 20 cycles) I noticed a slight, ever so faint, black ink on the paper. Being persistent, and not wanting to lose the money invested in this pricey printer, I continued to run the clean prinhead cycle. As luck, (more like dogged determination) would have it, it got slightly better with each "clean printhead" cycle. (A ray of hope) I ran a color cartridge out of ink doing this, and had to buy color ink (such a rip-off, because it will not perform funtion without wasting ink.) After using tons of paper, valuable time and effort, money spent on wasted color ink.....it finally began to print in black ink. It then allowed me to align the printheads, which failed befor due to the black ink not printing.....I would also advise not using the "clean printheads cycle from the printers menu...but rather use the one in the toolkit software...because this one does a better job, (has two levels of cleaning) and actualy uses less ink..(wish I knew this before wasting so much money on color ink) Anyway...it has funtioned very well now for several days after...I hope this helps someone out there, before they make a boat anchor out of theirs like others on here!...HP needs to wake up, and make a more reliable printer, or at least a better cleaning system if they plan to continue sell me a printer....Kenny

I have a C6180 that was displaying the 0xc19a0035 error code and the above fixes worked for a while until the printer started power cycling continuously - making it useless. The problem turned out to be failed capacitors on the logic board from a manufactuer called TEAPO - many unfavorable internet references. Look at the capacitos on the logic board, if any look like they have even the slightest bulge in the top, they are failing and should be replaced. On my C6180 I replaced C613, C614, C660 and C662 and the printer is working great!

Not sure how many people are brave enough to start replacing caps on on a logic board, but I am.

As pissed as I am at HP it goes to show you useful info is useful info and some of us are game if it gets the job done and doesn't put money in HP's pocket.

If replacing the caps, does the trick ... it just goes to show you what cheap bastards HP is. How did you find this? I can't image some HP support person telling you this, usually they find it easier to tell you to junk it if it is out of warranty and would never suggest for a customer to break the seals and do a self repair like this.

Ink Failure problem once again. Solved this time in less than 10 minutes. Turned off, removed plug from printer, removed transformer from power for about 6 minutes, pluged back in and it powered up by itself. it showed two cartridges needed replacement very soon so I replaced them first checking the onboard level indicator. Problem is gone! (for now). This trouble free period was about 9 months.

Wasn't sure where board was, so pulled the right side cover where the cable connectors are, pulled the board and sure enough ... 2 out of the four caps you mentioned are bulged.

For the brave among you ... you need a T10 star screw driver (I had one of those kits with bazillion screw tips and drills and had a t10 tip ... I put in my electric screw driver) and a soldering gun then ...

1. Remove screw on the back next to the cable connectors.
2. Pull any connector protectors/covers (as it will impede side cover removal later.
3. Remove another screw near right front of scanner glass (lift top backward to access (does not look like it comes off easily so don't try)).
4. Again next to right side scanner glass about halfway back is indent with a tab that needs to be pressed down to pry plastic cover downward (front and back edges will stick and need a little help around the lips. Once down, it hinges off.
5. Logic board front faces inward, remove 5 screws on board.
6. Gently pry upward from the bottom edge of board to expose the front.
7. There are disconnect-able wires harnesses, but I'm leaving them attached for now.

The caps in question are about 1/4" diameter and about 1/4" high and are green plastic coated with exposed aluminum top with what looks like a peace sign embossed in it (peace of shit apparently ... how prophetic). Diagram ref numbers are next to them, but they are about middle left side of board. They are +/- oriented, but marked on the board. They are of different sizes so note which are which (I have my list at bottom).

Soldering isn't that hard and these aren't complicated tightly packed components so if they are bulged ... desolder the caps from backside.

If I am reading them right the ref numbers and sizes ...

C613 680uf 6.3v SC 105 Centigrade 08/06

C660/C662/C614 330uf 10v SC 105 Centigrade 08/06

Only these caps are TEAPO caps on the board, I pulled them all to get and posted the values and since a1224imac said many unfavorable internet posting on TEAPO ... so I'm doing them all.

I'm not an electronics person, to me it is just like plumbing and house wiring ... connect a to b with smaller parts.

I looked at Radio Shack online and they don't have these sizes. I know there are some variations that you can get away with like higher voltages as these are the max volts not the running voltage, but the uf values???

There is also one of those quarter size batteries, it is in a holder, but soldered in so I'm skipping replacement, but something to think about if stuff is still screwed up.

Hey a1224imac ... Nice find ...

I still want to know how you found this out or are you an electronics guy who doesn't take no for an answer?
Where did you source that caps and did I read them right? Wasn't sure what that 08/06 was ... could have been manufacture date for all I know.

Industry sources will usually only sell in bulk, but ended up ordering from www.digikey.com ...

Digikey Ref# Vendor Model Description Price Each
565-1750-ND ELXY100ELL331MH12D CAP 330UF 10V ELECT LXY RAD 0.42000
565-1876-ND ELXZ6R3ELL681MH12D CAP 680UF 6.3V ELECT LXZ RAD 0.49000

There are lots of sub-characteristics for caps, hopefully these will work.

What seemed like the higher end caps had high min order quantities, but these were min 1. Order a few extras and with shipping came to $5.51.

Shipping is snail mail, but I'll let people know how this works out after I get the new ones in.

FYI ... People might want to look at this

http://www.dalantech.com

from some guy that has done cap replacements (with pictures) and he too sites TEAPO as failing without outward signs (another reason I'm doing all TEAPO).

He mentions www.digikey.com and www.mouser.com as sources.

Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by a1224imac (9/21/10 8:06 PM) reply + / -
Hi MorePissedOff, good description. I usually don't take no for an answer, and I have been around electronics all my life, so once I figured out where the logic board was hidden, the problem was obvious.
For the capacitor replacements I went to mouser.com (in a former life I found them to be a good source of sample parts). I went for a slightly higher voltage (higher voltage OK, lower voltage BAD), anyway the capacitors cost about 60cents, but shipping was expensive - total was about $7.50, so MorePissedOff found a better deal. For those who are unfamiliar with electrolytic capacitors, don't install them backwards (the negative side is labeled on the capacitor, and the positive side is labeled on the logic board - pay attention.
For those not familir with soldering, a little soldering 101: When installing the new capacitors, the holes will likely be sealed shut with the old solder (unless you have a solder wick or solder vacuum tool) - trim about half the leads off the new capacitor, heat one of the holes and insert the correct lead a little bit, then do the same on the other lead and heat each side progressively working until the capacitor is fully inserted - tedious but it works. Properly solder the connections (keep it neat, no big chunks of solder) and trim the leads.
Lastly, on my C6180 the 680uF capacitor was labeled C662, with the other 3 being 330uF - so you need to check to be sure you are putting the right value capacitor in the right place - I am not saying MorePissedOff is reading the values or labels wrong, there can be variations in the logic board design - especially if you are looking at a different printer model.
I suspect this failure may be impacting many printer models from HP produced around this time. Looking at the problems that other folks are having, there appears to be a constellation of errors around the ink system, which may be more sensitive and is an early indicator that the capacitors are failing.

Nice work and great documentation a1224imac.
Thank you so much for all the time and effort to correct this problem. Do you think the original parts were defective or just poor quality?

Note: In the absence of a solder wick or solder sucker, a sharp tipped wooden tooth-pick may be used to hold a contact hole open until the remaining solder sets.

I did doc and a1224imac did pics .. a good match. My http://www.dalantech.com link also has notes about soldering.

As detail as I was, I think I started to look at the cap labels after pulling the second so it is very possible I flipped them. I saw the board part number on a1224imac pictures and matches mine. I haven't gotten the new caps yet, but I think I'm going to go with a1224imac's claim that c662 is the 680uf one less we hear from other people.

poppawayne ... caps do go bad for all sorts of reasons, I don't think high heat was a factor here as no near by heat sources like a heat sink, transformer or tight packing. I doubt TEAPO would intentionally sell bad caps in the kinds of quantities that would be causing complains like this forum has ... but lack of quality is another story and from general internet forum buzz ... plenty of bad TEAPO caps are out there.

The TEAPO dark green and poorly printed dark gold is a bitch to read ... I could have even pulled them right and they were miss inserted at the factory given the crappy labeling ... another reason to not use TEAPO.

a1224imac ... I noticed from pictures some of your caps have blue pen on top, but there wasn't a good before top shot to see them all. 3 of 4 of my TEAPO's are marked with red as well as other caps (may be just a mark that they were tested???).

Gee ... 3 of 4 uf sizes are the same ... may be the ink is how they tell the difference with such crappy printing? Unfortunately, my 680uf has the ink so kind of blows my theory unless mismarked at the factory. Additionally C628 (near C612) on your board looks physically larger, mine is 10uf what is yours, it could explain the different cap'ing.

I haven't gotten the new caps, but if anyone else has cracked their C6180 open, I'd like to hear what size your C662 is (man that sounds pornographic) as a confirmation.

Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by a1224imac (9/23/10 5:25 AM) reply + / -
There were capacitors from different vendors on my logic board - I will have a look at C628, and take some more pictures.
If the voltage experienced by the caps exceeds the rated value, overheating can occur at very low power levels - if the wrong cap was used (too low voltage tolerance) this error could be replicated millions of times....
Another good read: http://www.dashdist.com/1u2u/company/capacitor.html - lends credence to the thought of lots of bad capacitors.
I will also find the exact part numbers I ordered and post here as well.
I am anxious to hear if this fixes other folks printers or if I am the exception...

Hi MorePissedOff ....

Right you are, cudos to you also. I had not read back far enough. Thank you too!

Concerning soldering, I also look for cold solder joints and have in the past found too many. They are easily fixed, but often they are hard to find.

I am happy to find others here who do not give up nor take no for an answer.

Thanks again.

HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure - ANSWER by MorePissedOff (9/23/10 4:08 PM) reply + / -
Ok so I got the caps today and put them in with the 680uf cap in position C662 as per a1224imac, screwed the board down, left the covers off and fired the old c6180 up with no usb or network cable in. It sounded cantankerous as it cycled with all sorts of bings and bongs (and reminded me the black wasn't in and the paper tray wasn't in all the way) ... seem to cycle forever.

I plugged the usb in, my computer did its usb load thing, I found a short email to test print against and said let there be printing ... and there was ... hallelujah.

Streaked in a few places, but given it has printed in a few months...I'd say it warrants a cleaning cycle.

a1224imac ... I'd say this is a good confirmation that you are on the money and that you are the man ... today and I think forever as far as a lot of people in this forum are concerned.

HP should have there %#%&#!@ kicked in court. In my opinion this product should be recalled for this many people ripping about virtually the same problem. I bet dollars to donuts that virtually anyone here with printer cartridge hiccups also has bulged (bad) caps ... are any of you guys lawyers ... can you say class action!

Again ... a1224imac you are the man!!!!!

i think the 6150 was costcos model number, most box stores have mfg. make them there own model so the can play the price match game.or can i say not play the price match game.i could be wrong though.

Full recount of the cap replacement in full ... with some corrections about dis-assembly and cap positions ...

(it actually seems some other threads at this forum as noted this as a fix a few months back, but I still think a1224imac is the man).

1. Remove screw on the back next to the cable connectors.
2. Pull any connector protectors/covers (as it will impede side cover removal later.
3. Lift cover to access ink area, remove another screw near right front flat area of what would have been the scanner glass (does not look like it comes off easily so don't try)).
4. Lower right lip has screw, remover it to loosen corner (doesn't need to be removed, but of reassembly it was easier (silver memory cared piece pries off also)).
5. Again next to right side of what would have been where the scanner glass was about halfway back is indent with a tab that needs to be pressed down to pry plastic cover downward (front and back edges will stick and need a little help around the lips. Once down, it hinges off.
6. Logic board front faces inward, remove 5 screws on board.
7. Gently pry upward from the bottom edge of board to expose the front.
8. There are disconnect-able wires harnesses, but I left them attached.

a1224imac did some useful pictures of his cap replacement at ... http://picasaweb.google.com/109215435720772332144/C6180#

I'm not an electronics person, just like plumbing and house wiring ... connect a to b with smaller parts. Soldering isn't that hard and these aren't complicated tightly packed components so if they are bulged ... desolder the caps from backside.

If I am reading them right the ref numbers and sizes ...

1 @ 680uf 6.3v SC 105 Centigrade

3 @ 330uf 10v SC 105 Centigrade

Board marking show them as C613, C614, C660 and C662 and they have -/+ orientation and also marked on the board.

When I pulled them I thought C613 was the 680uf (and I can believe that I mixed them up), but a1224imac said c662 was the 680uf so I went with C662 is the 680uf cap.

These caps are the only TEAPO caps on the board, I pulled them all ... many unfavorable internet posting on TEAPO ... so I'm doing them all.

Radio Shack doesn't have these sizes, I ended up ordering from www.digikey.com ...

Digikey Ref# Vendor Model Description Price Each
565-1750-ND ELXY100ELL331MH12D CAP 330UF 10V ELECT LXY RAD 0.42000
565-1876-ND ELXZ6R3ELL681MH12D CAP 680UF 6.3V ELECT LXZ RAD 0.49000

I order a few extras and with shipping came to $5.51, a1224imac user mouser.com and was a few bucks more plus he used a higher volatge on the 680uf.

Job done, a lot of binging and bonging at start up, but seemed ok after a streaked page.

I seem to has also lost use of the magenta ink. Not sure if it is clogged or electronically dead yet. I tried clean head and NVM restart, but no luck yet.

I realized afterward there was a cap position that was empty on the lower left of the board and I vacuumed the solder out of it thinking it was one of the replacement positions and left it that way. If this is a multilayer board, I could have broken the circuit.

So until I reopen the case and add some solder, unclear if it did it to myself, but if someone knows a purging sequence for just magenta or a utility (someone mentioned a computer based utility, but was unclear where and I see nothing like on my c6180 software).

I posted a video of removing the logic board from a C6180 - re-re-assebly was successful ;)
Search for "C6180 logic"
This matches MorePissedOff's description - the cables are disconnected though.

Here are the parts I used to repair:

1 of these ($0.26 ea.) - C662
Mouser # / Mfr. #
description
647-UHM1A681MPD / UHM1A681MPD
Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors - Leaded 10volts 680uF 8x11.5 20% 3.5LS

3 of these ($0.12 ea.) - C613, C614, C660
140-RGA331M1CBK0811P / RGA331M1CBK-0811P
Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors - Leaded 16V 330uF 105C 8x11.5mm

If you are attempting this on another model and you are not sure the capacitor values, just ask - there are lots of folks on this list that can help.

I just opened mine c6180 following the images of a1224imac. I have the "cartridge expired" problem. I pulled out the wallet cord and the battery (for two hours) on the mother board, reassembled the printer and ... voilà ... the cartridge worked perfectly. And with my big surprise, the lan and wireless settings doesn't disappear.
It's absolutely unfair this HP behavior. I got my original sealed HP cartridge in the drawer, but when I need it, the cartridge was "expired" ... This is my last HP printer.

Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by MorePissedOff (9/26/10 9:04 AM) reply + / -
My magenta is doing fine ... just appears to have needed some time and coaxing to prime it out or loosen the clog (found a 3x4 picture with a lot of deep red and was ok by the end ... nice way to not waste the other colors).

I like the battery trick, don't need it right now, but given HP's track record ... need to remember that one. Now if it wasn't such a pain to disassemble to get to all this.

In my opinion, this is all planned obsolescence for profit ... HP shame on you ... not only are you screwing us, you are torturing us in the process. I came so close to buying Cannon and was just wait for the model to go on sale at Staples when this cap replacement solution happen. So while, HP has abused us and we beat them at there own game, I have now saved about $180-250 bucks on new hardware, unfortunately, they will still profit on future ink (I've never had much luck with refill kits although those ones were the print head combo units vs the 02 sytle that are just chambers).

a1224imac ... saw more pictures at the prior link, but no video. Think you need to switch to Digikey in future ... my caps were Chemi-Con .42 (330uf) and .49 (680uf) (a brand I saw good ratings on) and got 5 and 2 quantities to have spares, used US Mail options. Online orders don't tell you what the shipping comes to so I had to take it on faith that I would not be ripped, but $3.30 of caps with shipping came to $5.51 ... very reasonable. Package was good sized cardboard box 6x6x1.5 with packing ... heat sealed clearly marked envelopes for each size. I expected them loose in some small padded envelope, but got very professional packaging for such a small order ... personally I can't see how they made money on me.

Edwardga ... seems stuck in some hardware fail ... I'd certainly pull the board and see what the caps look like.

dirtracer27x ... if it is teapo brand (dark green with dark gold lettering) and you are pulling one then I'd do them all.

I was second to do it and still running strong 2-3 weeks now.

a1224imac ... saw the video ... seems you are the "man" only in the philosophical "buddy" sense ... I owe you an apology for jumping to that gender conclusion. I see you have spread the news in a few other forums including HP ... GOOD ... HP should be ashamed of themselves.

So how many others did the cap replacement and any problems?

In this day and age of toss it vs fix it and off shore outsourcing, I am actually glad so see the people here with a can do attitude and that simple arts like soldering isn't lost.

I have a HP PhotoSmart C6180, with fax. I had lots of clicking sounds on the left during startup, and it gave me an Ink System Failure message with error code 0xc05d1381. The support code was R0620T.

I followed the following steps, which fixed the problem.

1. Pressed and held the “*” key.
2. Pressed the “#” key and released both keys.
3. Display said “Enter Special Key Combo”
4. Pressed and released in sequence the “1”, “2” and “3” buttons.
5. Screen said “support R0620T”
6. Pressed and released the right arrow button until the display said “System
Configuration Menu”.
7. Pressed and released the “OK” button.
8. Right arrow keyed until display says “Hardware failure status”,
9. Pressed and released the “OK” button.
10. Display said “Hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear”.
11. Pressed and released the “OK” Button. Message changed to “Hardware failure
status Cleared. Press Cancel to continue”.
12. Pressed and released the “CANCEL” button as many times as necessary, so that,
the “Ink System Failure” screen with error 0×00000000 appeared.
DID NOT TRY TO PRINT AT THIS STAGE.
13. Using the Power Button, turned the unit OFF and unpluged the power cable from
back of the printer.
14. Opened the printer and looked inside. On the left (where the clicking was coming from) was a 2in by 1.5in corner of paper, which I removed, and two white plastic gears. The smaller gear was forward of the larger one. I rotated the smaller gear from front to back of the printer, so it is now back of the larger gear.
15. Waited 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then pluged the power cable into the back of the printer
16. Turned the unit on. The printer displayed message “USE POWER BUTTON TO
SHUTDOWN THE PRINTER” followed by “PRESS OK TO CONTINUE”. Pressed OK.
The Printer ran its normal startup procedures.
17. Pressed Setup menu on the All-in-One then scrolled using the arrow key and
select Print Report then select Self Test Report.
At that point, everything was back up and running.

Not sure why the "Key Combo" solution keeps coming up...Has anyone used the Key Combo solution to achieve long term error free operation?
Summary of capacitor replacement solution:
It appears the many of the INK system failure messages are being precipitated by failed capacitors on the logic board - based on other users, this is a common problem with many HP inkjet printers made around this same time. The system most sensitive to problems is likely the ink system. After the ink system errors begin, the printer eventually will go into a loop of continually powering on and off (as mine did). While the "key combo" method above clears initial ink system error, it does not repair the failed components. The repair is easy and fast, all you need is a Torx #10 screwdriver, a soldering pencil, replacement capacitors (less than $1.00, really!) and a toothpick - see previous posts from several contributors for more details.

I also have the ink system failure and a bulging cap. I ordered the parts per a1224imac and removed the circuit board per his/her excellent video. I'm UNABLE to de-solder the bad components. HELP!
I am using a de-solder wick and a 30W solder gun, as well as a Weller dual heat 100/140 watt gun. Can't seem to melt the factory spots, the solder won't budge yet they are tiny spots on each lead.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you....

ITS FIXED!!

Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by morepissedoff (1/2/11 2:53 PM) reply + / -
A 30W seems too low and Weller Gun's are know for two issues ...

1. The connection under the nuts holding the copper tip corroding and/or coming loose as to not make a good electrical connection thus less heat.

2. The tip itself becoming corroded or eaten by the acid in some fluxes so uneven in how/where it applies heat.

I have a heavier model, but 100/140 should be good as long as it isn't having above problem.

Since you are unaware of this, I gather you borrowed or found this gun somewhere and haven't done this before. The solution is same and simple for either ... disassemble tip from gun, file the connector area surface of the prongs and the tip, reassemble and tighten the nuts good. Usually nut is ok, but a quick pass would not hurt.

A warning ... hold/clamp the barrel area that the nuts go into to much force in nut disassembly/assembly can rip the inter connections.

Should be nice and hot after the fix and no problems, however, sometimes it helps to have a drop of solder already melted on the tip so it "flows" to the uneven surface if the tip doesn't make enough contact.

I managed de-solder the first capacitor in my repair. I chose to remove the obviously bad one with the slight bulge on the top (and the bottom was bulging too). I replaced this cap with a new one. I decided not to do the 2 other TEAPO caps on the board as they do not appear to be damaged. I reassembled and powered up. Voila! The system came up and it now works beautifully.

It was recycling on and off and giving me ink system failure warnings before. Problem seems to be gone with that one bad cap at location C660.

The re-calibration with the key code sequence may work for some minor situations but for the rest of us, it is not a permanent fix. Replacing the bad capacitor(s) is. Many kudos to a1224imac, morepissedoff and others for the info on this website. It save me from smashing this HP junk with a 3 pounder. The capacitor was $.12 and shipping was $7.95 from Mouser. Oh well. Anyone know where I can get HP ink cartridges at fair prices?

So I found another site where someone suggested doing a partial reset:

PARTIAL RESET: UNPLUG THE POWER CORD FROM THE BACK OF THE PRINTER. PRESS AND HOLD THE # AND 3 KEYS TOGETHER... WHILE HOLDING THEM, PLUG THE POWER CORD BACK IN. AFTER A FEW SECONDS, RELEASE KEYS. PRINTER WILL RESET.

This worked for me and (fingers crossed) I don't seem to be getting either message now.

Hi All,
I am surprised about all the issues surrounding the C6180. I bought mine 4 1/2 years ago and it has never given me a moments trouble - I use it fully wi-fi running from 3 laptops and a Desktop and it has run and run printing A4 and Photos in vaious sizes in this time period.
I have even allowed the cartridges to run dry without mishap. Then this year I switched from HP cartridges to refillables and everything has moved along ok till today when I got the Ink system failure message. The first time I just pressed cancel and everything seemed fine. Then the second time I did a web search and turned up this site.
I am aghast a the scale of the problem. I did the reset recommended and so far everything is OK but we'll see what we get.
Thanks

Many thanks for the info you provided. I went thru all the steps and in the end received the same error message. The only thing I can think of that may have caused the original problem was when the black cartridge was out of ink I replaced it with a non-HP one (due to their high cost). It was one I had used previously when I had another printer problem (it was still a full cartridge). So I'm at a loss as to what to do. I hate to purchase a new HP genuine one at $200 (well that's a little exaggeration:) and find I have the same problem.
Any help anyone can give me would be appreciated.
Many thanks.

There are some defective electronic components used in the construction of HP's C6180 all-in-one printers (as well as other models). The symptoms range from an occasional ink system failure message to the printer powering itself on and off repeatedly.

The solution for most confirmed long term fixes is to replace the defective capacitors on the logic board. The easiest way to spot a failed capacitor is to see if the top is puffed up (even a little bit). Search for "C6180 logic" on YouTube to see how to disassemble.

Photos of the capacitor replacement: http://picasaweb.google.com/109215435720772332144/C6180#. The capacitors I replaced are C662 (10volts 680uF) and C613, C614, C660 (16V 330uF 105C - 3 of these). The parts I used are from Mouser.com, but others have used DigiKey.com as they had a lower price.

Hi, I'm wondering why HP can not provide such clear, simple and functional guidelines on their site. This seems to be such a common problem with no obvious fix even on the HP site.

This is great fix. Thanks for your help.

It enabled me to fix the problem in minutes and then dwell on several wasted and very frustrating hours I had previously expended not fixing matters but getting more and more stressed.

I have two of these machines, both in home offices and my wife and daughter use other very similar HP machines, which I have been waiting to develop similar problems. They are not subjected to heavy use but had proved useful and reliable prior to them both developing this problem within days of each other. I even bought two new full sets of cartridges.

I was on the verge of junking them both!

I have a C6180. I have only used HP inks to this point (however, thanks for the tips on getting refillable). 99% of my use is for black-only, however, the machine sure uses up a lot of color inks (that's either bad design or a lawsuit). The machine was purchase around 2007. It is connected to Ethernet (10BaseT I guess) for printing. For the last year, the machine has stayed on 24/7 as it is also used as an incoming fax machine. The machine is NOT on a network that is connected to a modern Windows PC, thus I can't use the extra driver features there (the machine is on a Linux network and also gets jobs over that network from older Windows virtual machines running under Vmware on Linux).

My INK SYSTEM problem is DIFFERENT than I have heard anyone describe.

I am NOT getting any error messages.

My problems started suddenly about 3 weeks ago. I am not sure if it was related to running out of a color of ink or not. However, we normally run the inks until the printer won't print anymore without putting in a new ink; that had never been a problem.

My copied OR printed output ranges from PERFECT to COMPLETELY BLANK. Usually the output is in-between, with BLANK horizontal banding ranging from perhaps 1 mm blank stripes fairly often up to about 2 cm (.75 inch) blank stripes so that 95% of the intended printed area is missing/blank.

When the blank stripes appear, they may continue to appear for many copies -- or the next copy may be perfect -- or the next copy may be completely blank.

I have not found a repeatable, reliable way to fix the stripes.

- I have tried restarting without unplugging. Sometimes works, sometimes not.

- I have tried powered off and unplugged from the machine (but after reading this forum I need to also try unplugging from the wall). Sometimes works, sometimes not.

- I have run "clean print heads" up to three times in a row. Sometimes running it one time solves the problem; sometimes three times does NOT solve the problem.

- I think I have noticed/imagined that changes in weather/humidity may affect or correct the problem.

Again, I do NOT get any ink-related error messages.

Sometime very soon after the blank stripes problems started, I started (for the first time ever) to have paper jam error message problems. The errors occurred at random times; when it tried to start printing, after it was done printing a page, and even while it was doing absolutely nothing (print a page and watch it for 2-3 minutes -- all okay -- leave the room and come back 30 minutes later and it has an error message). BUT there were NO actual paper jams. I checked, rechecked, etc. I used different paper, thicker paper, etc., but such changes seemed to make no difference. There have been no more jams for the last week, but I have no idea why or why not.

===

MY QUESTIONS ARE:

1) Has anybody has this type of problem: blank horizontal banding and/or completely blank pages? How did you fix it?

2) Has anybody had the paper jam error messages? How did you fix it?

3) Many people in this thread talk about "cleaning print heads", "swab print head", etc., etc., etc. However, each time, the person has not mentioned what model of printer they have. I have a C6180 and I cannot see anyway to get access to the print heads other than taking the whole damn machine apart. Are those people using other models and just being unclear about it? Or IS THERE a way to manually clean/swab/wipe the print heads of the C6180?

4) A few people in this thread have talked about taking apart (disassemble) the C6180. Are there instructions for this anywhere? Written or video or anything??? One or two people (printer model unknown) have talked about taking a printer apart and then it never working again -- I don't want to have that result.

Thanks to the OP for the original information. And thanks to everybody else for keeping this alive. I hope that somebody can help me with my four questions.

Jay

Re: HP Photosmart C6180 Ink System Failure by RunningFree (9/21/11 7:37 PM) reply + / -
- Have a C7280.

- Forget error code (sorry...) but it was one of those stated above. Probably the worst one (my karma). So, followed above stated HP procedure about 10 times to try to resolve issue, but to no avail every time... No amount of key sequencing, code clearing, resetting, unplugging and replugging did any good.

- All levels showed correctly in HP Solution Center. Yellow ink level was low.

--> Solution found: Replaced yellow cartridge but also, ENERGETICALLY removed and reinserted each and every of the 6 cartridges several times. ENERGETICALLY as in I've got nothing left to lose at the epitomy of frustration kinda jerking to and fro movement under the lid. Picture it...

After closing the lid, the printer did it's "initialisation" sequence once more and it didn't sound any better than before: the now all too familiar grinding sound like "I didn't press the clutch enough and shoved the stick into gear anyway" started it off followed by the pulley humping belt tug of war... Usually THE CODE would appear not long after. BUT WAIT ! Whats's this ?! A new warning appeared: CLEAR PAPER JAM. There was none... Pressed Ok. And waited some more. The test was f***ing endless. But finally, it rolled to a stop. No more crash code. I printed a test page, a diagnostic page and a sample page. Everything works fine now.

I know it sounds too damned simple but, it worked for me: ENERGETIC CARTRIDGE REPLACEMENT. Who would of thought...

My sincerest thank you's to every one who participated here. My cheeriest hi-five to those for whom my solution would work and my most heartfelt sympathies to you who tried yet another solution - mine - only to have it also utterly fail...

Thank you ever so much for taking the time to post this for others. I spent nearly 2 frustrating hours trying to fix this issue, and HP was of no help. Thanks a million it worked for my c7280. I've lost faith in HP products this having been the first ink change and getting no support from the HP web page. I was in the verge of getting a new printer (obviously a different brand)after spending hours on this error research and buying numerous cartridges thinking I was scammed with refills. If this is a common problem with HP printers, I presume, they should do something about it and make it clear.

I fixed my problem (posted a couple items above)! I THREW OUT THE PRINTER.

Problem fixed!

This situation forced me to get real and pay attention to what is really important. My time is worth much more than this frustrating printer.

I did quite a bit of research and absolutely LOVE what I have replaced it with.

I bought an EPSON WP-4530 (I like this model instead of one higher because I prefer that it has real buttons on the console).

- It is FASTER (at least twice as fast).
- It DOES NOT STOP and make lots of funny noises when you are in a hurry.
- The COLOR IS BETTER (which was a huge surprise)
- It is CHEAPER (around $300, but read on; I got it for $200)
- It AUTO-DUPLEXES COPY & PRINT if desired.
- It has a VERY LARGE PAPER TRAY (six times the size)
- It has a manual feed for odd size stuff

AND..... THE INK IS EXTREMELY INEXPENSIVE (only on this model). They say 2 cents per page, but for what I do, I think it will work out to about 1 cent per page.

AND..... it only cost me about $200!

LOVE IT, LOVE IT.

I got it at Office Depot. They had it on sale for about $50 off AND a $50 credit (may no longer be offered, I am not sure) for bringing in ANY OLD PRINTER (so I took them a 25 year old pile of junk).

I also spent another few bucks ($30 I think it was) for an additional two years of service coverage by Office Depot -- you just take it into the store and usually they give you a new printer.

This is a relatively new model, so buying it now puts you early in its lifecycle (which is best).

If you are tired of struggling with your HP problems, take a hard look at THIS PARTICULAR MODEL: EPSON WP-4530

If you value your time, there are much better printers out there now.

Jay

Problem started when we would get random horizontal bands of semi-printed text interspersed with normal printed text lines. I cleaned the printer heads, then tried aligning the printheads, and received a alignment failure error. Rebooted the system as described above, ran another alignment, got the same error, cleaned the print heads again, then ran the alignment again (there is a forest getting naked somewhere) and this time it was successful. Hooray... or so I though. tried printing a page of text again, and ran into the same initial problem of random blank horizontal bands. Anybody have this issue and offer any sage advice, short of buying a new printer?

I appreciate all the comments in this forum--inquiries and fixes. I scanned through most of them, but didn't happen to see if anyone has experienced getting a message on their HP C6180 that says: "Cartridge has exceeded expiration date; please replace immediately to resume printing..." As a result of this, the printer would not print out or scan copies at all. I found this rather outrageous since my elderly motherly, who I bought this printer for, didn't print or make copies all that often and had probably only used up less than half of the ink in most of the cartridges within the two years from the date of purchase. I fiddled around with the printer menu options, hoping to work around this problem but had no luck. I'm going to try a few suggestions made from this forum before I go and purchase new cartridges. After reading many comments about the printer failures, however, I don't feel very confident about this particular HP printer model.

Thank you!! You first posted this in 2007, and six years later people are still grateful. This seems to be working for me, although I'll add that after step 11, my printer just seemed to be "normal." I was not able to finish it the same way. When I plugged the printer back in, the power just went back on by itself, and I don't seem to have full control of the on/off switch. That may be a separate problem. In any event, thank you so much for sharing your solution. It was a big help.

Had "ink system error" with different number code. Had decided on an HP 7525 printer at Sam's before I found your posting. Tried it as a last resort before purchase. No luck the first try BUT success the second time. Have run multiple prints since (turning printer on and off several times). Works OK. Error showed up after installing HP cartridges that came in the photo pack. HP did not answer inquiry on possible bad ink cartridges. Thanks again. I really like the photo prints - better than Kodak.

You saved me either $80 for new cartridges for an old printer or the cost of a new printer. Thank you thank you thank you. I tried many different steps and this is the one that worked. Amazing!

Just wanted to say thanks so much! I was so happy that an article that was posted in 2007 still works today for this printer!

Just found this. I had a problem with my C6180 - only printed half of a page. Would not print the rest and also printed jibberish like weird signs, numbers, etc etc. This reset fixed everything. And I was getting ready to go out and buy a new printer! Saved me $100±! THANKS!
