 | Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by brainwave89 (7/19/07 4:18 PM) reply | + / - | After turning on my Brother MFC-9420CN printer this morning I received the following error on the LCD screen: Check Tray #1 Re-install Tray
The printer worked find the previous day. I took the only paper tray out then back in and also shut off and on the printer. I still receive the error.
Any suggestions on how to clear this error message would be appreciated.
Thank you for looking.

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by otterpott (7/23/07 10:56 AM) reply | + / - | Hey Brain, I finally broke down and called the support center on this. Hit "Menu" then #'s 72 and see if you get a paper count of 288888. They refused to tell me what exactly is wrong, but that I need to buy a new paper tray. I'll let yah know how this goes once it gets here. But basically the same thing, worked one day then nothing the next cept that error code.

I encountered exactly the same problem with my MFC9420CN. I'm suspicious that Brother is hiding something to prevent a recall.
Would you please share your experience on how did you get this problem fixed? Thanks.

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by ellefra (12/6/07 4:36 PM) reply | + / - | My Printer is doing the exact same thing.
About 2 months ago this happened. Page count 288888 ... etc. I turned it off for a day, the next day everything was fine once again. (unfortunately I forgot to check the page count ... I'll bet it wasn't 288888 anymore)
I go to use my printer today, I'm once again getting a page count of 288888 and a message to re-install the printer tray.
Hard to believe a paper tray can break, fix itself, then break again. Seems like an electronic problem to me.

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by lester jones (4/17/08 5:38 PM) reply | + / - | I was having the same problem. Power down the printer and moved it to another room while painting. When I hooked it back up and powered it up I received the check tray #1. After four days of research and turning it off and on. I came across a blog below. I followed part of the instructions-I powered the unit up while holding down the 3 and 9 keys and now I am back to normal!!! Don't know why it worked, but it did.
2.3 Parts Life Reset Function
This function is provided for service personnel in order to reset the counter of each periodical replacement part and count the number of replacement times when replacing the periodical replacement parts.
(1) Press the 3 and 9 buttons at the same time in the ready status.
(2) The “Reset Menu” will appear on the LCD. Select the applicable periodical replacement part by pressing the up arrow or down arrow button and press the OK button. < Periodical replacement parts are indicated on the LCD > - Drum - Belt Unit - PF KitMP - PF Kit1 - PF Kit2 - Fuser - Laser
(3) When the OK button is pressed the “1. Reset 2. Exit” appears on the LCD. Press the 1 button if resetting the counter. If not, press the 2 button.
(4) Pressing the 1 button accepts that the machine implements the counter reset.
(5) If the 2 button is pressed the machine goes back to the select part counter again. If you need to Exit press the Stop/Exit button at any time.
(6) The machine returns to the ready status.

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by razors (4/18/08 6:06 AM) reply | + / - | if you get this error and page count is 288,888 that means your firmware on the engine controller board is bad and the engine controller needs to be replaced per brother service update.

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by bjp (5/12/08 11:06 AM) reply | + / - | Mine has just shown this error also. I tried the 3 9 and it didn't work. Maybe I am not doing it right. the counter reads 2888,888. I called Brother and she said it may be the engine controller. She had me wipe the tray rails down twice and unplug from surge protector and plug into wall. Does anyone know how much this engine controller (and labor) may cost? And how long they usually keep the product?

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by lester jones (5/12/08 8:44 PM) reply | + / - | My error message came back again. I went to printer properties. On the accessories tab I found that tray 1 paper size was blank. I entered letter and everything has been fine since.

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by gc868 (5/24/08 5:35 PM) reply | + / - | I sent my printer to two different local Brother Authorized centers for diagnosis. Both of them told me the same thing that the mainboard of this printer needs to be replaced, the cost will be over $375. I decided to scrap the printer for parts.

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by daverroberts (5/27/08 6:42 PM) reply | + / - | I get the same page count 288888 error, but my machine says 'unable to print', nothing about a 'tray' problem. A local Brother service centre tells me it needs a replacement circcit board at $525.00. They say they've seen a lot of these errors. My machine is 19 months old so out of warrenty - How do we get Brother to do a recall?

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by Anonymous (5/29/08 10:58 PM) reply | + / - | WELL WITH THE CHECK TRAY 1, IT IS BECAUSE THE JOB U SENDING TO PRINTER WASNT SENT TO THE CASET IT WAS SENT TO THE MP TRAY (TRAY 1). SO IF U PUT PAPER IN THE MANUAL FEED IT WILL THEN PRINT... U CAN CHANGE THE SETTINGS ON THE PRINTER WITH DEFAULY SIZES... MOST LIKELY THE DOCUMENT URE PRINTING IS A ODD SIZE .

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by Ellen97310 (8/22/08 6:32 AM) reply | + / - | Had the same issue. Found some workarounds involving holding down certain keys or wiping down parts - no luck. Got the same information about the engine controller and they wanted like $600 to repair a $800 printer for which we had already spent $600 to replace the 4 print cartridges. Insanity! We put the Brother to the street, bought an inexpensive B/W all-in-one, and will buy a cheap wireless inkjet for occasional color printing. Gotta be less costly than what we did and could have sunk into this printer. They are designed to reap profit AFTER sale. Every printer I looked at user reviews for had some complaint of the same sort.

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by Cornchopped (8/23/08 12:42 PM) reply | + / - | The 288888 number of death! We had the same thing with this boat anchor. Brother should be ashamed- didn't even get 2 years work out of this junk and just replaced the cartridges.

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by brothersuxazz (10/9/08 3:22 PM) reply | + / - | Yes, I have the same MFC (Mal-Functioning piece of Crap) 9420CN and believe it or not I also have the same error code 2888888888. When I called and spoke to customer support they told me the engine controller board needed to be replaced, obviously the unit is out of warranty and the support tech had the balls to say it’s a common problem, which is why they extended the warranty for that particular part for 18 months. I suggest to any body that has this same problem and did not through this oversize paper weight out the window from frustration, write a letter describing the full situation and send copies of the same letter certified return receipt to brother the better business burrow and also the attorney generals office.
This may seem like a lot of work but it is the only way to force a recall. If customers don’t take the time out to contact these facilities big corporations will continue to get away with selling defective products and leaving it up to honest customers to pay for their incompetence. More then one person needs to file a complaint in order for anything to happen so please exercise this option and help others.

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by gc868 (10/30/08 11:41 PM) reply | + / - | I've decided not buying anything if it is labeled Brother. I've also told all my friends to stay away from Brother products. It seems very effective after they heard my horror story about 9420CN.
My 9420CN is still sitting in my garage. Wonder if anybody in interested in buying it as parts. I only printed a few hundred pages in two years before it broke down.

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by nivek (10/31/08 7:12 AM) reply | + / - | Alright Alright So brother has had issues with this machine, Dont forget the HP 3200 or for that matter just about all the ALL IN ONE inkjet machines made in the last three years. Brother still by far out rates other manufactures with there monochrome laser MFC's and DCP's I will say I recently worked on a 9420 that had 52,000 copies and still going strong it was just time for a fuser which I was able to find for $150 from simplyinked.com. Anyway my point is you can pick any manufacture and I will name you a lemon. I have around 100 brother machines in the field with a great history and most high usage. Please Dont be to quick to judge, always do your research, and ask around before you buy. Thanks, From someone who has brothers back.

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by Guy Lamarche (11/15/08 9:50 AM) reply | + / - | Same problem and no fix. Reality is that the economic crisis being experienced throughout North America, will, in the end, serve to drown the weak puppies such as Brother. The overated, overprised garbage which they promote and sell in the marketplace will come back to kick them in the butt. Judgement day is near for Brother and rightly so. Not only that but the Gvy should fine them for sending "anchors" to landfills prematurely. Brother, no more business from this Canadian!

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by nivek (edited 11/17/08 7:25 AM) reply | + / - | yeah Im alittle confused there. The 9420 copied HPs design? Ive never seen an Hp with an OPC Belt and the toner system with the scanner on bottom? I went to brother training OH I believe 8 Years ago When the HL-2400 was coming out and The service trainer for brother told us down at Brother Headquaters in Bartlet, TN that this Engine was designed by Hitachi I really see no difference from the 9420 and the 2400 engine. Anyway I just wanted to point that out. What does the 9420 have in common with HPs color lasers which are for the most part Canon Engines? I will add that Ive been told that the 9440 is a lot stronger model. they probably should have given this model for a high discount to people who had purchased the junk before. Hp has a dendency to do that when they know they made a machine that will not last.

Can't even buy the PF roller replacement though it says it has 0% life left. Anyone know a different way to reset this error message and to reset the parts life counters for the PF rollers?

Push and hold the "secure print" button while switching on the machine. Now the display is flashing, you are in "maintenance mode" Now enter 82. This will show the last error. Enter 09, this will print a test page. If you cannot enter this mode, the engine pcb is broken... Btw, this is an OEM machine , engine made by Ricoh Print Systems ,not by Brother.

"Check Tray#1 - Reinstall tray" Got the 288888 count. None of the little trick fixes worked. Toast! The frustrating thing is that I also have a HP Color LaserJet 2605dn with color registration way out of whack. It also needs a main board! Can only print gray scale! I'm going broke here.

 | Re: Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by Anonymous (8/10/09 8:57 PM) reply | + / - | Nobody really cares about your statistics, it doesn't change the fact that people spend hundreds of dollars on toner and the machine itself to find out it has to get trashed two years later or folks who dish out hundreds more to get it repaired. Even when they DO do their research like myself who takes almost a month to purchase an item because I want to be sure I get a great product. It's still CRAP. Oh! And their customer service don't know jack about what they are doing, they read off of a prompt on their computer thinking that they know what they are talking about. My 8 year old can their job! I will never stray from my "CANON" products again.

 | Re: Re: Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by Anonymous (10/13/09 6:12 AM) reply | + / - | We have a Brother MFC-9420CN. We have a PF Kit #2 that shows no life and we are getting a paper jam in the back of the machine every once in a while. Page count is not near the amount to call for new parts still has a good percentage of life on other parts. Have not made many copies on it, mainly used for receiving faxes and sending. Called Brother said it would need to go to an authorized representative. We decided to buy a new printer. If anyone is interested in buying to fix or for parts ,we would be interested in selling.

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by Sec/Treas (11/12/09 2:15 PM) reply | + / - | Received the same message on my MFC 9420cn. I used this printer for our local fire department for about 2 years and printed between 500 and 600 pages. I called almost never found a Brother service representative that knew what they were talking about. End result was the controller board is bad. Brother has to know about the 9420 controller board issue. Why don't they offer a new board and let us install it? It is a very simple 5 minuter task to remove the control board but they will only allow their service representatives to install them. Wouldn't be nice if the would offer a replacement control board on their website. Brother's name is being smeard on Bulletin Boards everywhere concernig this issue, and rightfully so. As for HP printers, I have about 17 hp desktop lasers and 1 large network printer running at my work place and it is very rare that I experience any trouble with them other than toner replacement. Thanks HP.

Brother sent me cleaning instructions which I perforemed as specified (I think). After I turend the machine back on, I get an error message that says "unable to print, refer to troubleshooting and maintenance chapter in user's guide". I odntacted Brother, who tole me the problem was in the laser assem. What does this mean? How can it be repaired? Can I do it myself?

Can anyone recommend a Multifunction printer that is a better investment/ comparable to this one in page output and toner??

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by Sec/Treas (1/7/10 1:17 PM) reply | + / - | In response to "Can anyone recommend a Multifunction printer that is a better investment/ comparable to this one in page output and toner??" I strongly recommend the HP Color LaserJet CM2320nf MFP. This printer received a 4.1 out of 5 review. It is much quieter, and faster the piece of junk Brother MFC-9420CN. It list for $699 on HP's website, but can be purchased at a lower price by searching the internet. I got mine for $450. It prints Black and color printing/copying at speeds up to 21 pages/min • Advanced printing, copying, scanning, and faxing with one machine • Automatic document feeder (50 sheets) • Color graphics display I have used mine for several months with Zero problems. It also prints cards and envelops. You will like it. Thanks

When I go to find the actual error code I get machine error 40. I've read elsewhere that this means I need a new OPC belt. Has anyone else gotten this same message? And if so, was it fixed by getting a new OPC belt?
Thanks!

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by nivek (2/19/10 4:29 PM) reply | + / - | Decided to check this again for any updates from seeing this on another machine. The part is currently running around $200 but is out of stock for anybody who cares. Still we have been selling the BRT 9440 as a replacement with lots of success. The funny part as to my post is that I was going to complain about the HP CM2320 which someone gave lots of compliments to. We recently sold one which is having fax issues. Even had HP come out and replace the Formatter and Modem board and yet the customer is still having issues. Mind you we put there old BRT 4100 back in place and have no problems so its not a line issue. Did look up the HP online though and come to realize that the model is having lots of problems with faxing after reviewing the firmware updates. Obviously not all the bugs are worked out. Once again do your research and dont knock Brother to hard. HP has there issues and like brother there phone support is a joke. It took me four phone calls and around 3 hours to get a tech onsite just to have the same issue a few days later.

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by Anonymous (2/19/10 10:36 PM) reply | + / - | Concerning the replacement part for the MFC-9420CN, HP is not offering a rplacement part for $200 although I can certainly believe the part about them being out of stock. First off, we are not discussing a BRT 9440,whatever that is. As for the HP CM2320, it has a 4.1 out of 5 rating so don't even try to put it up against that MFC-9420 piece of junk. You said you sold one HP CM2320 that is having fax issues. Look how many Brother MFC9420 printers are have the same issue. Also the same or better quality printer in HP is almost half the cost of the MFC-9420. Anyway, as I indicated in my response to the question of replacement, I run a whole fleet of HP printers in my office and the only problem ever experience was using remanufactured toners, and even that is very seldom. Personally, I plan to never purchase, use, or promote Brother because of their rip-off policy concerning the MFC-9420. Open your eyes and look at the long list of broken MFC-9420 printers listed at this site. Okay that's enough, you get the picture. Thanks for making this easy. Brother sold a piece of junk and refuses to admit it.

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by nivek (2/22/10 9:33 PM) reply | + / - | I was trying to keep it on topic with my part update. So I will again somewhat for those who care brother did extend the warranty on the machine for this error an additional 6 months but I doubt anyone bought the machine recent enough for it to effect them. For the above poster I was reffering to the Brother MFC 9440. As for Hp not offering a replacement part? I would imagine not since its a brother product but brother does have a replacment engine board for the 9420 for around 200. For those who are thinking about the HP cm2320 Check under there firmware updates and the fixes for what Im talking about they wouldnt post this if it wasnt for several complaints. Thats all I was saying. As for compairing the two that would be stupid and I never did. As for never selling a bradnd becuase of problems with a individaul model. I think any tech would agree we would never sell a machine becuase every brand makes a machine model that is a problem child. I still have several brother 9420's working great and a few that have had the repair done as well. As far as the long list. Yeah this post has seen lots of post but Ive seen enough others in regards to different brands and models to know this in comparison is average. I could go on and list them all but that would be pointless. Moe wouldnt appreciate it and I really dont want to take the time. I've been a Hp, Brother, Lexmark, Xerox, and Sharp Ar series ASP so Ive seen my far share of warranty calls and know every brand has a machine with lots of issues so as always dont be to quick to judge and always do your research or call around to your local service providers and get some opinions.

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by Anonymous (2/23/10 7:07 AM) reply | + / - | First off, this forum is about the MFC-9420, not the MFC-9440 or the HP CM2320. The HP CM2320nf is only discussed in answer to the following question. "Can anyone recommend a Multifunction printer that is a better investment/ comparable to this one in page output and toner??" Okay, back to the MFC-9420, tell us how to get that repair for $200. I've called everywhere including several Brother repair shops. Brother refuses to sell me the board. They say it must be ordered by a repair service center and will not sell the part to an individual. Replacing the board is about a 15 minute project that is very simply to change. So tell us, how to obtain the replacement board so that we can install it. Everyone is waiting on the answer. Secondly, has brother correct the issue on the replacement board so that we will not expect the same problem with the replacement board. Conclusion, how do we repair the MFC-9420 at a total cost of $200 when we've been quoted prices that range from $400 to $650 plus shipping cost. Come on now, we've heard this $200 fix twice already. Where is it? And thank you if it is true.

This is the service note for the error and the proper way to restore the settings after its been replaced. I have not read where it has been changed but the part number is different and I cant image them not changing it. Printer Manufactures handle recalls like cars manufactures. They go back redesign and give the customer a better quality product when updated. As far as the amount to repair I would charge $180 for the part and $75 in onsite labor. To restore the counters and also clean the machine. As for the other quotes. I work with several other local companies and know there business practices and the quotes would be pretty much right on. Contrary to what you might believe about me. I give my customers the best value and quality parts I can find to keep them coming back. Kinda goes back to my car comparison. Take it to a dealer or a well established local service provider and you will see a big price difference. I called Brother and unfortunately for the reconditioned part listed in the service note there is not ETA. However when I looked up the original part number it gave RLF9931001 as the new part number. Which the describtion says 9420 engine control board. The stock is currently low and it list at 205 but once again I would sell to my customers for 180.

 | Re: Brother MFC-9420CN with a check tray #1 error by Anonymous (2/23/10 2:13 PM) reply | + / - | I just became your customer. Troy D. Smith, Fort Payne, AL 35968. We are finally getting somewhere. I don't know who you are but I want to find out. Please list you phone number, email address or some means of contact. I want to order the board ASAP at $180. I don't understand why we have been receiveing such high priced quotes. I expect you will be flooded the these orders. Several owners have already disposed of their machines but maybe there are a lot of owners still hunting this fix. But I consider the $180 to be a very reasonable fee to repair my machine that has printed between 500 and 600 pages. And my thanks to you again because you are the only contact that has offered to sell the repair part to a customer. If you were close enough to Fort Payne, AL, I would galdly pay the extra $75 to have you clean and service my machine. Again, what is you contact. By the way, the installation pdf is also great. I only wish we could contact all the owners. Thanks again.
