1220c hp deskjet - prints only pink and black. by sillyd (3/11/07 12:26 AM) reply + / -
Hi, my old deskjet prints only pink and black right now. I got it 2nd hand and it worked then. but upon carrying it home, turned it upside down, was a bit rough and later noticed ink coming out the side (which is i think where the service station is). now it only prints pink and black. and with cover open alligns the color cartridge towards the sad face. i have changed the color cartridge several times just to make sure it was not faulty cartridge. and also cleaned the metal prongs on the head of the carriage with alcohol. today i removed the carriage from the printer which seemed really unecessary, but upon opening the printer up noticed on the right hand side a MESS of ink/congealed in what i think is the service station. could this be causing my pink-only printing issue. and if there is a lot of ink in there, how can i clean it out? also don't really understand how this area works since i can really see any of the part. are there small parts or pads taht will now need replacing?? electrical parts?? thx for any help.

one more thing - is this worth trying to fix?? i have a lot of toner, but also would like to keep it all from prematurely going in landfill. pls advise. thk you! -Susan

after reading a bit about leaks here. perhaps the service station was just full already and the leak was from there due to tilting when i carried printer home. if so, could this still be causing my printing problem perhaps it is a totally seperate issue. again, the service station is completely black and gooey - can't even see the parts so it is hard to tell anything. :(

thx,Susan

The service station normally looks like that and it wouldn't cause the pink and black. There's one really long thread dealing with the pink flu http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/inkjet/13694#42

Moe,

If the service station wipers get ink buildup on them they can cause the nozzles to clog, so I'd advise cleaning out the service station, or al least cleaning off the wipers before reinstalling the cartrisges.

yeah it looked super messy in there so will do. i will soak and then clean (altho to be honest the cleaning of that looks crazed. i can't even imagine any part below has survived). so i am not with the printer now, but do the wiper nad the cap that closes off the cartridge head sit down in that mess? i don't really recall seeing anything in there but gunk and seem to remember it as a low sitting bucket of gunk. does the printer cartridge slide downward? confuSED about this service station. and what i shoudl be uncovering during excavation work..

The service station is supposed to have sludge buildup in it, although not an overwhelming amount. The wipers and cap sit above it and slide back and forth to clean and cap the ink cartridges. They don't venture down into the sludge. Wipe them with a paper towel soaked in Windex or other window cleaner. Warm water will also work. Do not use alcohol as that has absolutely no effect on ink whatsoever.

Further note:

As long as the sludge stays sludge the service station usually works.

If you let the sludge dry out, then it can lock up the service station.

And an intereting fact, in some cases if you let a locked up service station dry for another few days it will start working again. Seems like the block of gunk that is sticking to the parts shrinks a little and breaks loose from those parts which can then move again. (that saves the school systems that turn off their printers during the summer)
