HP 3330 3 in 1 , Vertical line on some pages

HP 3330 3 in 1 , Vertical line on some pages by Lee Tabas (1/23/07 3:17 PM) reply + / -
We have a 3 year old 3 in 1 machine. We are experiencing a vertical line 2" in from the side, that varies in intensity. We suspect that it may be related to one side of envelopes as they feed into the machine. Any ideas about this? Thanks

More information needed.

Is the line there when printing, when copying, or both?

If visible for printing and copying then:

Do a half-way test on the printer to isolate the problem.

The purpose of the test is to see what the page looks like before it goes through the fuser.

Print a page and feed from the single sheet feed on top of the input tray.

When the paper has fed almost all the way in to the printer pop open the cover to stop the printing process.

Open the printer and inspect the page, if the ghost is visible before fusing, the the problem is being caused by the toner cartridge.

If the page looks good then the fuser is bad.

I did the halfway test, and the line did not appear. Is it just replacement of the fuser, or is there some type of cleaning that could be done. Where can I obtain a fuser? Does anyone have the manual, that might be able to send it on? Any ideas for local help in replacing the fuser? I am reasonably capable in fixing and repairing. Thanks

If you answer more of my questions, then I'll give you some more help.

I still don't know if you have a printing or copying problem.

I don't know if you ran a copy to make a test page, or used the menus.

I don't know if you use the menus or a PC to print a test page if the line is on the page or if it only happens when you are copying.

I'm not going to advise you where to get a fuser until you have given me enough information that I am sure the fuser is bad.

What I will say is if it is the fuser, then cleaning it will only make things worse.

The first time I replaced a fuser on one of thase it took me an hour and a half, and I had the manual, if you don't work on printers for a living plan on taking at least 2 hours.

By the way, it really irritates me when I take time to ask a few questions to help someone out, and then they don't bother to answer them. (no I don't get paid for this, I do it out of the kindness of my heart)

The line appears from both printing and copying. I used the menu to print a test page and normal printing and copying. The line appears in all of these.
Thanks for your interest.

Sounds to me the fuser film has torn. It is a real pain to replace the fuser in this machine as Stephen mentioned. Here is a link for the service manual. It will be up for 7 days.

If it fails when printing the self test, and the half-way test looked good, then it's a bad fuser.

I would recommend replacing the fuser as opposed to rebuilding it, the fuser is relatively cheap, and has easy to break plastic parts.

Where is a good place to buy a fuser?

I'd email Moe.

Put on your sunglasses before you look at his picture, his, um... er... beauty, <cough, cough>, is almost too much to bear with naked eyes...

I can get you one. If you think you can handle replacing it, and you are sure it is the fuser, click on my name to email me. Stephen wasn't kidding about the difficulty level of replacing it. If you're a real glutton for punishment, I also stock the films. That's all I ever replace.

I just got a haircut today. I'm looking a lot better. Can see a lot better too, hair was getting in my eyes.

HP Laserjet IIIP by martinmarty (2/16/07 4:15 PM) reply + / -
Could I please ask you people a followup question?

I am having a similar problem on a Lasrjet IIIP. I just replaced the toner cartridge and I am getting a faint vertical line on all pages.

I did the half-test and the line is visible before fusing. This means it is the toner cartridge, correct? Is there anything I can do to fix it or did I just burn myself by buying a cheapie?

I opened the door [that you're not supposed to open] over the drum on the toner cartridge and I can see the line on the drum. I tried cleaning it off with a dry paper towel but it came right back and.

I didn't want to spend $100 for a real HP toner cartridge but I will if it is the only way to make it print right.

Thanks in advance.

-Marty
