Brother 9700 MFC has Paper Jam Error

My 9700 has a legal tray also. It had a paper jam error. Intially we turn it off and then back on and it would work for a while. Then we had to take out cartdrige and turn off for 1 hour then it would be fine. Now the error is constant" Paper Jam". There is NO paper jam. My MFC is about 4 years old and lightly used. Any suggestions before we take it to a recycling center. We suspect a a faulty sensor but do not know. OH>>>> Never have replaced the drum.
