 | Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Danimal (8/4/06 7:34 PM) reply | +1 + / - | Hi printer gurus. I have a Canon Pixma MP780 that we've been fairly happy with. However, I recently had issues on my windows XP profile with the black cartridges printing - I attempted to print a drawing with AutoCAD and a couple of colors came out fine, but no black. I then tried printing a Yahoo Map, and same problem - no black.
I went to my wife's profile and the printer worked fine.
I tried again today to print an e-mail from my profile, and no lock. I deleted the printer, reinstalled it - still no luck.
I tried from my wife's profile - this time, for the first time ever - same problem, no black! She prints often and never had this happen before. Did I give her the same problem when I deleted and reinstalled the printer?
I printed a nozzle check, and I noticed that 3E doesn't print at all! OK, so there's part of the problem. 3E was full, but I replaced it anyways - didn't fix the problem. Still no black printing.
I then tried a few of the maintenance options, and Auto Head Align would result in failure every time. After doing this, the printer is constantly 'in use'. It will still try to print windows test pages (only the colorful logo prints!).
It is as though something is not working right with the 3E, but the printer and computer are none the wiser? Any suggestions? I will keep fooling around and post results.

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Danimal (8/4/06 7:49 PM) reply | + / - | FYI - just deleted the printer, unplugged it, restarted XP, let it re-install, then updated the driver from the CD. Windows test page - just the colorful logo. In Use/Memory button is flashing continuously, and the printer is moving *something* around inside. Auto Head Align - still gives an error after printing a big black bar, a big blue bar, and two small black bars. I am assuming the black is from the 6E black cartidge - it is low on ink (I don't have a refill here) and I can't help but think this might be related to my problem...
Any insight here? I am open to any suggestions!

I have reset ink count. Auto head align - failed. Did nozzle check - all fine except 3e black. Any fix recommendations from anyone?

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Marjolein (8/28/06 8:47 AM) reply | + / - | I have a Canon Pixma MP750 and my 3e cartridge would not work, and I tried everthing that has ever been suggested. Then I went in the print menu, selected preferences and then selected profiles I then selected the default setting and clicked on OK and now it works fine.

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Peter Smit (9/1/06 9:59 AM) reply | + / - | I am habing the same problem. I bought a new printhead for my MP750 (€ 80,- :-( ) This helped for about 2 days......
First the Black 3e cartridge stopped working and now also the BK6e cartridge. The funny thing is that copying directly from ythe machine seems to work completely fine, either in black or color.
So it seems to be a software problem.....

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Peter Smit (9/1/06 10:16 AM) reply | + / - | O.k. I found a temp. solution --> Change the setting of paper to Photopaper and then it work for me anyway :-) The only problem is that I now have a very slow printer :-)

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by austan (11/14/06 6:51 PM) reply | + / - | my 3e stopped working also.. even tried a new print head but same thing. Changing it to photo paper does work, but thats because its using the photo black instead of the 3e.
anyone know how to fix the 3e?

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Lorena (1/22/07 10:15 AM) reply | + / - | I'm having the same problem. Are u guys going to tell me that NO ONE found a solution? If I find something, I will write in the solution.
|
 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Lorena (1/22/07 10:40 AM) reply | + / - | SOLUTION: Call 1-800-828-4040 and get a new ink tank. They say it's the chip in the back of it that needs replacement. I still have to receive it to see if that works. Everyone should call the 800-number so CANON knows that this is a problem in large quantity and they will fix it for free - like a recall.
I will write again after I have received the new ink holder-tank thing to let you guys know if it worked. Let me know if anyone has any questions.

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by gel (1/22/07 1:02 PM) reply | + / - | Interesting; I had an MP760 (am in UK_) and I had that issue; Canon's own engineer made 3 calls to fix, replaced main circuit board, printhead, and other bits but still no joy. In the end they took away as they said would be a good test bed for their training centre. Gave me an MP780.
Behaved for 9 mths then guess what...same again.
This time contracted engineers have made 4 visits, and changed same stuff as before; I kept saying cost of you guys coming out exceeeded cost of printer; they said Canon never do that.
So I contacted Canon Europe boss, and I now have an MP830, so fingers crossed!!

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by carolleigh (9/17/07 9:27 AM) reply | + / - | POSSIBLE SOLUTION: I had this same problem this morning so I did a thorough cleaning to no avail. I then contacted Canon at the (800) number listed above and after charging me $9.99 and FOUR suggested cleanings, my 3E cartridge works perfectly. If you guys are still having printing problems, try running the 'CLEANING' through at least 4 times - it's worth a shot and less expensive then buying a printer head OR a new machine. Good luck!

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Anonymous (10/30/07 8:49 PM) reply | + / - | i have (2) mp780 printers. either one of them are working. the first one gave an error message that the repair guy from canon told me he would send me a replacement, which he did in march of this year. now this one doesn`t even turn on. and canon tells me that there`s nothing they can do about it. so i`m in process of starting a class action lawsuit against them. i should not have (2) canon printers in my home and neither one works. if you want to sign up on this lawsuit, e-mail me with your information. thank you

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto alig by wood (3/24/08 1:40 PM) reply | + / - | Friend told me to go out & get bottle of Windex with Ammonia D. Get small Glad container & fill it to level of 1 inch , add another 1/2 inch of water. Then put that solution in microwave for 2 minutes.
Meanwhile, run warm tap water at medium velocity over the screen of your empty printhead (take cartridges out & put in Zip lock bag for overnight). Gradually increase water temp from warm to very warm on cartridge screens while cleaning printhead. Do this for 5 minutes.
When you finished & water runs clear of ink. Immerse printhead in Windex Solution with printhead standing upright. Leave it standing up in solution overnight but for the first 1/2 hour rapidly move printhead from side to side to create bubbles (agitate) every 10 minutes.
Next morning take printhead out of solution. Use compressed air to dry thoroughly. Then after using compressed air allow printhead to dry on paper towel for another 2 hours.
Then after complete drying & only then re insert Printhead and then cartridges into machine.
If you are lucky print head will be thoroughly cleaned, if you are not you can buy another one from Canon for 31 dollars + shipping.
Good Luck to All.

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Anonymous (4/6/08 9:08 AM) reply | + / - | Possible Solution: Carolleigh's "run cleaning 4 times" worked for me. Before this I did remove the printhead and look around, but did not have to manually clean it.

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Michael H (4/15/08 8:45 PM) reply | + / - | I've been dealing with the same issue for weeks now. Replaced print head, all ink tanks, and tried all the suggestions posted still not working, It's a shame because I'll have to throw this printer in the trash and get a new one as it would cost more to repair it than it's worth. This is my 3rd Canon multi-function and they all usually have lasted just under 2 years. They work great initially but when they go they are done for. I guess I won't be buying another Canon

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Jodie James (5/18/08 1:18 AM) reply | + / - | I have tried cleaning the 3e black printer head 4 times consecutively with no avail. As there are so many postings that on this site that have replaced the printer head but still have the same problem, I am unhappy to do this. Has anyone got a guaranteed fix for the problem. I am extremely frustrated by this. Jodie

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto alig by jimbell4 (8/1/08 5:32 PM) reply | + / - | All, I fixed mine with a long but easy process. My 3eBK suddenly totally stopped printing. The rest of the colors had no problems when I ran the nozzle test. I emptied the 3eBK tank using the deep cleaning process with no success. I drilled a hole in the empty tank and filled it with 91% isopropyl alcohol. I ran the deep cleaning process many times. Just as the tank emptied the nozzle test started to print the 3eBK line. I refilled the tank with 91% isopropyl again and continued the deep cleaning and nozzle testing. It appeared the 3eBK had stopped again. After I emptied the tank I replaced it with a tank with ink in it. The first nozzle test printed with many missing areas. I ran the nozzle test followed by normal cleaning about 4-5 times - each pass showing improvement. Once again my MP780 prints great - I hope it lasts. Jim

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Brad S (8/21/08 8:22 AM) reply | + / - | I had the same problem and it appears to be in the software I cleaned the head and got the black to work but then the colors did not I cleaned a second time and nothing worked but all the colors were showing through the bottom of the print head and when I removed it again and then when reinstalled the print head third time sparks flew on the connection behind the head and the whole printer went dead. Canon is crap this equipment should last more than two years if your car can last 10 to 12 years a computer component should also we are filling up to many landfills with this crap I have had to also replace computers every three years or so. This stuff all needs to be made better I shouldn’t have had to even take out that print head should have never clogged up.

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Matt M (8/30/08 9:05 AM) reply | + / - | Had the same problem - 3e not printing at all. Solved this once in the past by replacing print head. This time I first cleaned the print head with q-tips and alcohol, then I tried suggestion by jimbell4 above - filling an empty 3e with alcohol and cleaning several times. This worked for me. It took several cleanings (I'd say 12-15), several 'nozzle checks' to see the 3e showing up on the test page. Switched back to full ink 3e and had to run cleaning again a few times before it would print perfectly.
Run the cleaning through the software, not from the printer itself - go to Printers and Faxes->Right click on Canon mp780->Properties->Maintenance tab->do "deep cleaning" - it let's you select just the 3e black for cleaning.

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Anonymous (9/8/08 5:35 AM) reply | + / - | I had the same problem and spent hours to fix it. When I replaced the 3eBK with genuine Canon ink tank then it works. The Staples brand is the problem. It was working for a while when I first used it though. I will not use Staples brand again.

I replaced the cartridge and that didn't work, cleaned it many times ... nothing. Then I tried changing the paper type from plain paper to photo paper in the print settings and it works perfectly.
Clearly this is a driver issue.

I HAVE FEELING SOMETHING IN THE JUNK INK HAS DONE IT BUT THEN CANT HELP BUT AGREE WITH SOMEONE THAT SAID IT COULD BE SOFTWARE RELATED SO IF NO ONE HAS ANY SUGGESTIONS THAT WORK THEN MAY HAVE TO CONTACT CANON DIRECTLY. IF I GET IT WORKING WILL DEFINATELY POST SOMETHING. I TOO HAVE ORDERED A NEW PRINTHEAD. FUNNY STORY THERE AGAIN...I AM IN AUSTRALIA AND EVEN WITH THE DOLLAR BEING LOW I CAN STILL GET ONE FROM THE US FAR CHEAPER THAN I CAN LOCALLY.

 | Re: Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by DigiNat (10/10/08 1:28 PM) reply | + / - | Did you try to do the suggestion above, where you do the maintenance "clean" 4 times in a row?
I've been having this problem, too - my MP780 would print color, but not black. Separately, the indicators for my ink levels aren't working accurately. Anyway, the black cartridges - both of them - were new, and still no black ink.
I was about to spring for a new printer when I was sent to this forum. I read through the list of suggestions, and figured the quickest (and cheapest) repair attempt was to do the cleaning 4x first. I did, and I've got print again. I'm so relieved!
I don't know how long it'll last, but it worked for now. FWIW, I've never used non-Canon cartridges, and I've never had them refilled, so this wasn't caused (at least in my case) by bad ink.

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by EmilyTheChef (10/24/08 6:14 AM) reply | + / - | My 3Ebk all of a sudden stopped printing, and in searching the internet, I found many threads that said to clean the print head. Though I couldn't figure out how to get the print head out! Take out all the ink cartridges, flip up the gray clamp, and a little black plastic tray will lift out. Flip it over and you may find a gooey mess. I used (upon recommendation from different threads) Windex. Sprayed it on, let it soak, used paper towels and a qtip to remove the goo... dried it with paper towel and some canned air. Popped it back it (got an error message to alighn the print heads, but that I had to put paper in the ASF, or what I'm assuming was the Auto Sheet Feeder, but there WAS paper in there! I couldn't turn the printer off...) So I opened the printer again as though I was going to change the ink tanks, but didn't take actually do anything to the ink carriage. That tricked it to think that the last thing I did was NOT changing (or fixing) the print head... so it finally let me do a nozzle check after a deep cleaning. VOILA! 3eBk is working again!

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by BAB (10/24/08 6:38 AM) reply | + / - | Try soaking in about 1/4" of warm water. Move the printhead up and down in the water and observe the ink screens. If water is moving in and out of them you have probably cleaned the head, and after a couple of pats on a paper towel, and a couple of nozzle checks you should be in business. If not, a new printhead may be in order. You can find all the parts you need for your Canon inkjets at beckscrs.com

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by hbsbmb (12/8/08 6:29 PM) reply | + / - | I wonder if the problem is related to using Office Max replacement BCI-3ebk ink cartridges? Maybe we should be sticking with Canon original cartridges?
|
 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by hbsbmb (12/8/08 6:36 PM) reply | + / - | I've had the same problems, except, not only have I tried using the deep cleaning cycles as well as the regular cycle numerous times, to no avail. I even took out the print head, sprayed cleaned with electronic cleaner spray (which helped several months ago when more than one ink color stopped working and these cycle cleans didn't work).
I even took the actual pens with electronic printed ribbon off of the print head device, and spray cleaned it as well. Still the black does not come out. Seems weird, that the black would stop, so I suspect there just might be some electronic malfunction. So, i'm pretty sure its not a cleaning problem. I also installed a new black ink cartridge, same results. The other clue, head alignment won't align is present. Hello Canon are you listening?!!!!

 | Re: Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Anonymous (12/8/08 7:36 PM) reply | + / - | Hi hb I got mine working again after using brake cleaner and had to strip the printhead all the way down also. But when I put it back together the next day (left it a day to air dry) it still did not work until I put a canon black 3E back in the machine. I had been using other brands for a short time when no canon was available in my town. I will never stray from Canon brand again. My print head has been working fine since cleaing it with aggresively. Although I did not trust it I did buy a new one and have it on standby just in case. FYI it has been a few months now and it has been fine. I hope this helps. But there does seem to be a problem even though Canon don't want to admit it as I did call them about it. Cheers

 | Re: Re: Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by hbsbmb (12/9/08 5:43 PM) reply | + / - | Thanks for the response. Its true, since i've been using other brand cartridges i've had problems. I'm a bit reluctant to buy another cartridge if the chip in the head is bad. Then i would have to try and buy another head i suppose, but, then its probably cheaper to buy a new printer all together.

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Anonymous (1/7/09 11:29 AM) reply | + / - | I did what Matt M suggested - be sure to use the software, not the menu on the printer itself, and do a deep clean. I had first tried to clean several times using the menu on the printer for my MP750, and that didn't help at all. I did the deep cleaning once, and got it to print. Yeah!

 | Re: Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Anonymous (2/14/09 9:29 AM) reply | + / - | Emily the Chef, Thanks so much for posting your solution to this 'no 3eBK printing'. I have worked on this for 2 days without any results..then I read your suggestion. I did as you suggest and cleaned only once (only the 3eBK). It works beautifully. I will say that I, too, had bought the OfficeMax brand of black ink and had used it for about 2 months without trouble. I replaced it last night with the 2nd (2pack offer) ink cartridge and had no luck at all. I bought $80 worth of Canon ink today and replaced the 3e (after your suggestion) ink and it now works again..Lesson learned: Canon wants you to buy only their ink - surprised? Thanks much!

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto alig by Anonymous (2/22/09 6:58 PM) reply | + / - | >>> Finally! This Worked For Me <<<
After trying most of the suggestions in this thread finally the post from "BAB (Authorized Canon Tech)" worked for me.
From BAB: Try soaking in about 1/4" of warm water.
Back to me: The first time I tried this printhead cleaning method it did not work. Then I figured I had nothing to loose so I cleaned the heck out of it with only warm/hot water. I even unscrewed and moved the little white piece at the bottom of the printhead (be careful not to damage the ribbon that is connected). I also used a few wet q-tips to clean the screens on the top and the small holes on the bottom of the printhead. I also soaked the printhead in water all the way up to the circuit board connections. I was satisfied that it was clean when I could put it into fresh water and it didn't change the color of the water. After this I waited a while to make sure it was dry and screwed the white piece back on. After putting it back into the printer with ink I just had to run alignment and a nozzle check. I almost cried (not really) when I saw the 3eBK show up on the nozzle check.
Final thoughts: To me the solution of throughly cleaning the printhead makes the most sense because the problem seems to arise after about two years of successful printing (with the same software and drivers) and it is a problem with 3eBK, the most used ink. At least it's a good no cost to try solution that hopefully will work for you. It saved me the cost of a new printer.

 | Re: Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Anonymous (9/6/09 11:44 PM) reply | + / - | Hi I also am in Western Australia. I had this same problem when the 780 was a year old. $220 for a replacement print head and service. Was told it was due to the use on non- canon inks. Subsequently I used only canon inks but same problem re-appeared after about 6 months; so I would suggest canon inks are actually no better at all than inks half the price! Perhaps blockage is more likely due to low use on colour? Tried about 20 cleaning cycles and used a set of ink cartridges, even tried windex etc with no success. Just received a replacement print head from OSD saving about $60 from Aus distributor. Will see how it goes.

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Anonymous (11/7/09 12:05 AM) reply | + / - | guys! I had the same problem with black not printing properly. I've done deep cleaning for 5 times a row and my new tank of ink is almost used up....
And after a whole hour, I found out it's not the print head's problem. It's a driver issue. When you print, set the paper type to Photo paper instead of plain paper.
Mine is working now. Hope it helps. Enjoy printing fixing! :D

 | Re: Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Anonymous (11/17/09 8:11 AM) reply | + / - | You are right ... It seems to be the driver issue. I go through all cleaning things and nothing works.
I have ended up to change the paper type to "Photo paper" and then I can print it ...
Does anyone have any idea how we can get the fix for this driver issue ? Printing with "photo paper" seems to be slow.
Not only I have problem with printing "black" ink printing, I also have problem with "black" copying, I have to choose, color copying instead ...

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by TedETGbiz (11/26/09 8:11 AM) reply | + / - | We have used Canon printers for years and are generally satisfied-- particularly because you can easily replace individual color cartridges when needed.
I use steam to clean print heads-- a gently boiling tea kettle with steam coming out the spout works every time. Be careful not to burn yourself...
Don't forget that these units have a "waste ink" blotter right under where the print head is parked. It fills up eventually-- after that your printhead will always act up. Blot it over and over again with a wet paper towel to suck the waste ink out.
We have used Chinese OEM ink for years; the quality is not quite as good, but they are MUCH cheaper. I like http://www.abacus24-7.com/ If you need high quality, go to a Fedex Kinkos or other print shop.
Happy Thanksgiving!

 | Re: Canon Pixma MP780 - 3e cartridge and auto align by Anonymous (12/30/09 2:56 PM) reply | + / - | soaking the print head in HOT water worked, but i had to soak it for almost 24 hours, constantly shaking it and running hot water (small stream of hot water) over the inside part (where the silver contacts are), constantly! no exaggeration. just letting it soak didn't work.
i think canon really needs to redesign their print heads. i really don't see myself buying another canon printer in the future. searching the internet, many people are experiencing this.
i'm thinking, if other people replaced their print heads and were still experiencing the 3ebk still not printing, then canon must have sold them recertified print heads that weren't working properly to begin with.
