HP 6210 stuck on Self Test

HP 6210 stuck on Self Test by Kimbyl (6/28/06 8:27 AM) reply + / -
The other weekend, I noticed my HP6210 was stuck in a Self Test mode. The power light was not on and no other buttons worked. I unplugged and tried it again. It starts going through a self test mode and the little rectangle makes it way across the display and stops on the last one. I tried HP support to no avail. It might be one of two things, the external power module (the LED is green on it, so not sure if that is actually a problem) or the printer itself. One thing I should mention is that we had a power outage just before we noticed it wasn't working. I'm considering buying a new power module just to see if that is the problem. Hope I can return it if it isn't. I've only had the printer a little over a year with hardly any use.

Has anyone had the same problem?

I have the same problem, and it happened right after a power outage, too. Were you able to resolve the problem? Thanks.

I haven't been able to solve my problem. Actually, I haven't been working on it. I remember I tried the online help which really wasn't much help. They asked me if I wanted to buy a new one. All of their responses seemed rather canned, so I wasn't sure if they really knew much on the other end (if there even was a real person there).

Does your problem still persist?

I have the same problem. Has this issue been resolved? Mine locked out after lightning hit a neighbor’s house. It was in the basement on a surge protector (the phone cord was not). The other HP fax machine I have was fine (even though it was much closer and not on a surge protector).

we have the same problem... lightning last night. Computer on the same surge protector is fine, phone cords were plugged into the surge protector. Tried #+3, #+6, #+9 nothing get partial resets then errors and unit power goes off. No lights on panel unless you unplug and plug back in. Self-test comes on gets to the end stops... lights go off and then after a couple of seconds panel light flashes and shuts off. Going to try #+* and try all again not plugged into surge protector (direct wall plug in)error number after #+9 OX8814e96e can't find any info on error number. Anyone ever have a solution? Thanks!

This seems to be an old thread, but i have recently encountered the same problem and stumbled on a way to get the thing printing again, so i post my answer in case it comes up for somebody else. I had unplugged my printer without first turning it off and got the self test, followed by the error message and blinking lights, when I plugged it back in. Through another post related to carriage jambs, I learned that unplugging the machine and then plugging it back in while holding down the 3 and # keys forces a reset of the machine. It didn't work the first time I tried it, but then I moved (by hand) the carriage out away from it's home position (thinking that this might give it something to reset) and it did get me past the self test and initialization procedure, so the machine works. Something obviously got fried when I unplugged the machine, because it won't start normally any more - it goes into the error mode with flashing lights EVERY time I turn it off now, but the 3# reset gets it going again - and I tell the kids to NOT turn it off anymore.

same problem, stuck in selftest with the square bar in right most position. Nothing seems to work, neither pressing # 3 and/or moving print carriage. Any solutions? Thanks.

I'm having the exact same problem. I've tried every suggested resolution...
#3 (partial reset) = no response
#6 (semi-full reset) = error response
#9 (full reset) = error response
black-color-quality buttons in the "copy" section = error response

If I get the error flashing it will continue flashing until I hit the On button at which point it shuts down.
Error:0x8814ea3a1: etc.

Obviously still a problem and apparently no answers or resolutions.

I just posted the same problem... did you ever find a resolution? (see all the ways I tried) Thanks! CaroleH

Carole: No, I couldn't fix it and gave up after having tried pretty much everything that you describe and many others before, I saved some parts for my wife's identical printer and chucked mine. I bought for only $130 a new wireless ready HP OfficeJet J4680. I guess at these cheap prices you've got to be happy to get 2-3 years of service out of these printers, and now it can easily be used by everybody and doesn't even need a cable...

Jurg, thanks so much for letting me know... I couldn't find a resolution. I just received a response from an expert on the FixYa site and he said much the same. May need a systemboard. In time they malfunction (6-8 yrs) and it's not worth paying to fix it - costs more than buying a new printer. Although ours was 5 years old, it may have received a jolt through the phone line during a storm. Everything else on the surge protector was fine. So it looks like it's time for a new printer. Thanks again for your information.
