I'm gonna guess defective E-mod, any ideas other then that......ANY-ONE. can print to other printer from parallel port on pc, so port is working, an is set to lpt1 irq7, 5 is being used by sound card.

 | Re: hp designjet 450c.....one for dmzcompute...!!! by dmzcompute (3/21/06 8:08 PM) reply | + / - | Two bad emods would be rare. I assume, but will ask anyway if you tried another cable making sure to use lets say a 6 ft IEEE parallel cable. Serial connection is always very difficult having to setup the parameters so I would never trust it. With the printer at ready press the print quality and Media Type keys to do a service configuration plot and see if there are any errors reported on that plot which may give us some indication of what may be wrong. Since the trailing cable connects directly to the emod and the only interfaces are on the emod it has to be something to do with the emod is the plotter will print its self tests ok, unless something with the cabling, driver or other communication issues.

 | Re: hp designjet 450c.....one for dmzcompute...!!! by dmzcompute (3/22/06 5:33 AM) reply | + / - | Another thing you may want to try is to get access to one of the older ex external jet direct device. You will have to go to hp to see which exact model to get, but they are cheap of ebay. The reason is for testing only. The older ones had a routine where if you held the button for over I think 3-5 seconds it would send a HP/GL test to the printer. At least this way you can confirm if it is the emod or some other communication issue. With this device if it prints ok you know the parallel port is working. If it does not then you have another bad emod.

I've been doing plotters/laser,prntrs etc. etc. for 10+ years, I have done the config test an it comes out ok it does have 1 error on it an it's in HEX if I remember right, I'll get error # for ya an lets hope it points us/me in fix for prob. I've cleard eeprom user settings an unit settings etc. etc. reconfiged an so forth........cable/driver/an a direct connect to pc is next step...........if this stuff fixes it (boy i need a vacation). I'll have a perfectly good E-mod for sale...know where I can sell it, other then e-bay. If it comes down to E-bay then so be it.

 | Re: hp designjet 450c.....one for dmzcompute...!!! by dmzcompute (3/22/06 11:35 AM) reply | + / - | You can use an external jet direct device. Drivers are built into the xp system, just choose the one for the size plotter you have. The other thing is you want to use the same cable that works with another printer connected to the same port.

 | Re: hp designjet 450c by Roy Mac (12/10/06 5:35 PM) reply | + / - | I have an HP Designjet 450C which has worked fine for 6 years. Last year it got a bit noisy and, to be prepared, I found and printed some well written instructions by 'dmzcompute' on how to change a drive belt. With some WD40 it kept going ok but now the belt (though shredding a bit but intact) seems to have come off.
Just for added confidence I wonder if there are any illustrated instruction manuals available?
Thanks for any help offered!

 | Re: hp designjet 450c.....one for dmzcompute...!!! by dmzcompute (12/10/06 8:13 PM) reply | + / - | The belt is not that hard to replace. Instructions are below, but please, please do not use WD40. Go to a cyle shop and get some tri-flo oil.
The belt is not that hard to replace. You have to remove the center cover first. Using a flat blade screwdriver pry the right most clip away from the top and slide the cover to the left and it will come off. If you have a roll feed attached you will have to remove the 2 torx 20 screws one on each side and slide the roll feed about 1 inch away in front. Next remove the blue power button on the right side. It just pulls out. Now for the right cover you just pry the bottom away on the three sides and at the same time lift in an upward motion. If you cannot pry it away use the flat tip screwdriver to pry the little clips away in the center on each side. Carefully lift the cover up and look inside and you will see two latches which hold the control panel in place. Squeeze the latches towards each other and the control panel will separate from the case. Let the control panel hang down by the ribbon cable. Next remove the left cover doing the same as with the right and it will lift straight up. Once you have removed the covers you will have to remove the spittoon on the right side. It is held by one screw (torx 15) towards the front. Just watch as you remove it to see how to put it back. Just be careful of the wire that is usually looped thru it on the left. Next you have to move the trailing cable out of the way from the holding clips by the motor and on top and push towards the rear of the printer. Next you will have to remove the encoder strip. It is held in place by two nuts on the right side. Remove the nuts and push the metal bracket towards the other side of the printer and you should be able to release the cable. Next remove the bracket on the left side that holds the encoder strip. When you remove the bracket, slide the encoder strip away from the carriage assembly and put it someplace safe. It can be easily damaged or bent. Next you have to remove the bracket that held the encoder strip-fastening bracket on the right side. Again it is held by one screw (torx 15). Now you can remove the cutter to the right and off the frame. Make sure the carriage assembly is all the way to the left and remove the ink cartridge(s) from the carriage and flip up the top bracket from both sides that covers the trailing cable. Just look at it and you will see how releasing the ends outward with release it. Just remove the trailing cable connector from the carriage. Next put your hand around the motor on the right and push gently in and to the left to release tension on the belt and remove from the motor shaft. Remove the belt from the left side pulley and slide the carriage off the frame on the right side. Turn the carriage over and you will see how the old belt was held and just remove the old and put on the new. You will want to remove any crud that has accumulated on the pulley and motor shaft. This is very important, as not doing so will result bumping action. I would also put a light coat of oil (Tri-flow or similar) on the rail that the carriage moves. Reassemble in reverse. You will have to attach the belt to the pulley side first and then pull to the motor and slide the other end onto the shaft. The encoder strip will be a little tricky. You will have to flatten the end where the nuts were and slide the strip thru the back of the carriage and out the other side. You will know you have it right if the carriage moves freely. If the carriage does not move freely the encoder strip is in wrong and just try again. It is a lot easier then it looks. You can test your installation before putting on the covers by using the blue power button sliding it on the side of the control panel to defeat the open cover switch. Press the power switch in with a screwdriver and test. You will also want to use plain water on a lint free cloth and clean the encoder strip. You also may want to use the same to clean the bottom of the carriage assembly by the sensor and the contacts of the print cartridges. Also look at the condition of the spittoon on the right. Black ink builds up and if it is very high, get yourself some rubber gloves, disassemble and clean most of the ink out of it. You can also use a cloth dampened in water to clean the service station on the left side. Good Luck.

 | Re: hp designjet 450c.....one for dmzcompute...!!!!!! by dmzcompute (3/2/07 3:43 PM) reply | + / - | You may need to get a friend to help you since those instructions have been used by dozens of people and no one had the issues you are having. For you information the encoder strip is a clear plastic piece which run thru the back of the carriage assembly. It has very fine lines on it that a sensor in the back of the carriage reads to position the carriage. It is attached to the black end plate of both sides. The right side is where it has two nuts and when you remove the nuts you press the end of the piece towards the other side to release tension and you can then remove it. As to the other issue you have to read the sentence part of which says "slide the carriage off the frame on the right side." I just looked and that statement is still there so you did not read or understand the directions correctly.

 | Re: hp designjet 450c.....one for dmzcompute...!!! by PedroDias (5/2/08 4:10 AM) reply | + / - | The belt broke.
I purchased a new belt and installed it according to the instructions in the service manual Upon power up, the printer went through its self-test and reported an error in the bail lift mechanism.I have a DEFM error subcode, wich indicates ta problem in bail lift. The bail lift mechanism is engaged when the print carriage positions itself over a lever, which engages the gears that drive the lift cam. Instead of stopping above the lever, the carriage postions itself all the way to the left, past the lever, over the service station. It then jerks a short distance to the right about 9 times before halting and signaling an error. i cant enter the service mode 2 to run the other tests. In service mode 1 i have run all test and it work's fine except the bail test. Please help me

How did you solve this problem. I've got the same issue.
Thanks in advance!

 | Re: hp designjet 450c.....one for dmzcompute...!!!!!! by dmzcompute (edited 8/17/08 10:55 AM) reply | + / - | Recheck your installation of the encoder strip to the holder on the RIGHT side. I have seen this a couple of times and both times it was caused by a bow in the encoder so the carriage assembly never made all the way to the right aide before moving to the left. Move the carriage by hand and at the same time look from the right side towards the left and you will see how the encoder sorts of bows. What I would do is remove the encoder from the right side and remove the encoder bracket and then reinstall the bracket first making sure it is straight with both holes being flush against both rods and then remount the encoder strip at that end.

 | Re: hp designjet 450c.....one for dmzcompute...!!!!!! by PPE (5/22/09 10:17 AM) reply | + / - | I also have the same error messsage and problem with the bail lift mechanism. I can not get into service mode 2, but in service mode 1 all of the tests pass except the Bail Cycle Test which just doesn't register any lights, solid or flashing. Then when performing the Modular Test all of the lights are solid and in addition the Best LED is lit up solid? The test just continues moving the carriage back a forth not going to the service station. (not clear from the manual if this is what it is supposed to do?) Any ideas? I am thinking that I need to try and replace the bail lift mechanism?
Thanks, Sara

 | Re: hp designjet 450c.....one for dmzcompute...!!! by dmzcompute (5/22/09 4:55 PM) reply | + / - | Have seen this a number of times. Recheck the holder on the right side for the encoder strip. If not full seated in the frame the encoder bows out and effects how the carriage reacts.

 | Re: Re: hp designjet 450c.....one for dmzcompute...!!! by Anonymous (6/4/09 12:09 PM) reply | + / - | dmzcompute,
Thanks for the tip. I think that was an issue as I was able to set the frame further back and now the encoder does not seem to bow out. It now runs centered over the longitudinal rod. Still, now a new error comes up when turning on the plotter. It states that the mark encoder is not detected. So I reran all of the Service mode 1 tests and the Carriage Y-axis test continuously runs without results(the LED does not light up at all), also when running the carriage test the line sensor portion shows no results(the line sensor LED doesn't light up at all). I am guessing the issue may be a faulty line sensor on the carriage? Any ideas? Any input would be appreciated! Thanks for you help, Sara

 | Re: hp designjet 450c.....one for dmzcompute...!!! by dmzcompute (6/4/09 8:22 PM) reply | +1 + / - | Forget about all the tests. Just watch the carriage as it moves across and when it get over the mark encoder does the red light come on. If not then yes either a bad sensor light or trailing cable and if it lights ok it could be a bad encoder strip, dirty mark encoder or even a bad emod. If it lights ok and then errors after going back and forth a number of times, then just hit the cancel button and the plotter may work.

 | Re: hp designjet 450c.....one for dmzcompute...!!!!!! by Anonymous (10/27/09 7:16 PM) reply | + / - | During the self test, towards the end of the test the ink carriage moves from the left side to a position about 6 inches over the paper, stops, then all 3 error group lights go on.
Any ideas?

 | Re: hp designjet 450c.....one for dmzcompute...!!!!!! by pktmattyj (12/1/09 5:31 AM) reply | +1 + / - | I’m having the same bail error problem after doing a belt replacement. I was thinking about posting a video of the startup to hopefully assist any knowledgeable folks in providing sage advice.
I was also thinking of posting a walkthrough up there at least I.D'ing the parts discussed in the instructions I found here.
If I hear any interest in seeing the video of my errors during startup, I’ll post a link to it tonight...
