if you can remove all ink from the yellow ink slot, check to see if there is a small piece of ink that is in a position to keep the new ink stick from advancing to the heating element.

Then i re-installed a yellow. The printer recognized it. The screen said "cleaning". It was cleaning for awhile and asked for another yellow ink. Then it went back to cleaning. Then it asked for a cyan, I added that, back to cleaning.
All in all it kept asking for inks, heated up and went into cleaning mode.
It kept eating inks. It ate about 4 yellows, 2 blacks, 2 cyans, and 1 magenta.
It spit out one sheet of paper with what looked like clotted colors on it.
Then it went back to cleaning mode. Sometimes it said, ink sticks jammed, please open and close top.
I did this and it went back to cleaning.
I got a printer error too that went away when I turned the printer off and on.
It asked for another yellow, but I have no more.
It seems to just do endless cleaning modes. I have wasted a lot of money in inks.
Anyone have any ideas???
Please help.

The way I do it when necessary is to use a pin or paperclip to go into the center of the ink stick and pull up thru slot. The cover does not come off to easily remove the sticks.
The sticks that have started melting are not accessible unless you jar them loose.

Hi, I'm sold on these solid ink printers, we had a 8200 which we ran into the ground having never had any problems with it. Replaced it with a 8500 which is working fine and now adding a C2424 to the office. Ink sticks are the major expense with these printers and we scour ebay to get genuine Xerox sticks only. 8200 sticks were easy to come by and we have had some success with 8500 but there is nothing available for C2424. We have a stack of 8200 ink sticks which we will never use and I would really like to use them in either the 8500 or the C2424. I used to be a candlemaker and reworking the sticks to the same shape as the C2424 will not be a problem! Having read some threads I'm concerned about melting point incompatibility between the 8200, 8500 and C2424. Am I being stupid to even attempt it or will it work? Thanks for any advice, hope I'm posting in correct thread.

According to Xerox you should not do it at all... As with most Major companies and brands Stock is always the most compatible and best for a long running and FULL life of the printer, But Can you your asking.... I guess you could but the life of Your Printhead will decrease significantly as well as the Ink Loader life.... So I guess what im saying is It probably will work but do so at your own RISK!!!

I have had my 8500DN for about six months. We had several Okidata Laser printers but the ink and maintenace was outrageous. The Okidata maintenance alone makes you just want to toss the printer and buy a new one. We purchased the Xerox because of the low maintenance cost. We were very please with it until the second time we had to replace the ink. It printed fine for about 100 copies then stopped - instructed us to call tech support. They had to come out. The ink failed to melt properly or something and we had to have a new part put on the printer. It worked fine for another month. Then, in the middle of a big job, deadline, etc. Ink full but printer will not print. Tech support said because it's Friday it will be late Monday. Why don't they make these things where the consumer can more easily fix minor ink problems? Truly aggravated. I've owned and or used just about every brand of printers and Xerox is by far my favorite but the heating problem with the 8500 needs to be looked into because it is costly downtime. When tech was here last time I asked did he see this problem often and he said yes, regardless of it being Xerox or Media Science ink (which is said to guarantee compatibility and will insure you against any damage to your printer caused by the ink). However, with the apparent sensitivity and heating problems I think it is a MUST to use Xerox ink - as costly as it is. Per tech support the same part needs replacing and they have to overnight it.
Have ink in error, Noticed your thread. by Anonymous (1/5/07 9:13 PM) reply
I had shipped to me in error and didn't notice, but I have 1 kit of 3 each of the 4 colours for the C2424.. let me know if your interested in purchasing. I have the 8400 and somehow these arrived. About 9 months in package
Does anyone know (positively) if the #108R00676 extended capacity maintenance kit will fit the 8500? Information suggests this item is for the 8550 only?

Sadly, this did not fix my printer (Phaser 8500, out of warranty). It still is asking for black ink. About 3 months ago, the users in that building put a yellow stick in upside down and then tried to pry it out with everything but the kitchen sink it seems. I had to tear the printer down to remove it, but once put back together, it was working. About a month ago, it came up asking for black ink although the chute was almost full. Resetting the Ink Stick Count fixed it. Now, it is again asking for black ink and doing the above steps in Diagnostics does not clear the error. Any and all suggestions would be welcome!

Both side covers have to be taken off. There is a T20 torox screw in the rear for each side cover that has to be removed. The top cover (the cover over the display panel) has to be removed first. You open the top cover and use a screwdriver to pry the cover loose. Once the two side covers are removed the ink loader will lift right out of the printer. There are 2 cables that have to be disconnected to remove the ink loader from the printer

my xerox phaser 8500 is locked. It powers up but tells me to insert the maintenances kit but the area on the side where the kit is suppose to be entered is locked. The maintenance kit can't pass through it. Is there any way to make the lock move back so the kit can be inserted. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank You in advance.

I was having issues with my Phaser 8500 Magenta ink. It was asking for more ink even though the tray was completely full. I removed two cartridges with no success. I then read this post and went through the diagnostics provided by Gebhardt and I'm happy to say my printer is running like a well oiled machine again! Thanks Gebhardt!
I order my ink off of suppliesguys.com and everything works fine. Spending that amount on Xerox ink is just silly.
I get great quality at a fraction of the cost...

I took the printer apart. Front panel off, 2 screws from the back to release sides then unplugged the wax stick holder and there was a slither of wax blockin the hole that the wax goes into. I removed this and no more error message...
Cheers

If the ink is Xerox, and doesn't have any defects in it you can try going into service diagnostics and performing the clear ISC fault, and seeing if that will clear it up, otherwise you are looking at replacing the inkloader, and if the message still continues to pop up you are likely looking at a printhead replacement.

my printer is low on yellow ink, but I just need to print black and white documents. I selected "black and white" in the printer properties and then try to print, but the printer still says "add yellow ink" and won't print.
Any ideas?

Gebhardt's instructions of 4 Oct 2007 enabled me to gain control of my printer and clean up the image. (Thank you so much). BUT. There's always a but. Originally the 8500 demanded black ink when it was chock full. Now it just says ink is low. I would like to know at what point (down the slide) that the ink detector operates. Apart from black, I can see 1/2 to 3/4 of the colour blocks. Is that sufficient to trigger the message or am I still getting an erroneous error?
Re: xerox phaser 8500 ink problem by tech5 (8/6/08 7:08 AM) reply
My 8550 gives an error message on startup - 09.035.43.67017. I think this is a problem with the cyan ink loader. I can't get it to go into service mode by pushing the red button and ok button at the same time when it displays this error message. Is there something else I can do? Also, if I need to tear it down to clean or replace the ink handler how do I do it?
