No matter how carefully I loaded the paper, adjusted the amount of paper, fanned it before inserting, etc. the paper feed rollers would not be able to feed the top sheet and I would get the E error message (paper tray empty). I checked for paper jams, cleaned the rollers per hp instructions, and followed every guideline for paper loading. But what typically happens is that after fifteen or twenty minutes of fiddling with the stack it will start feeding for awhile and then stop again. I cannot detect any difference in the way it was loaded when it worked as opposed to when it doesn't. I use standard copying paper that has worked fine on every other printer I've owned. I contacted HP, they sent me a brand new 1315 model and I'm having the exact same problem. I contacted them again and their answer is they will exchange it again. Any sense you can make of this or any guidance would be much appreciated. I'm willing to try the exchange again but I'm feeling like my wheels are spinning in futility just like the rollers on the paper feed. Thanks.

Is the machine sitting on a level surface?
Are there any unusual environmental conditions, (high/low humidity, etc)?
HP printers also do unusual things if bright light is shining in to the paper tray area, (morning sun through a window).

I purchased an HP 1315 over a year ago ( 13 months to be exact ) and it started malfunctioning ( why I am not surprised!). It first started printing an extra blank page after the sent document was finished printing( I did check to make sure there was no extra blank pages in the document ).
Then, it started jamming the paper. Both lights would come up on the printer ( the paper/cartridge lights ) and a "printer cartridge is stalled" error would come up on the computer screen followed by a " paper jammed " error.
I went to the HP customer support website and followed their suggestions until I reached " Call HP ". No luck. The problem is still there.
The only good thing is that (as long as I remove the paper from the tray first)I can send a printing command, wait for the "out of paper" error message to come up, put the exact number of pages I need to print the documentin the tray , reset the printer, and the document will print just fine.
Nevertheless, If there is paper in the tray already, It will pull the paper half way through and then it will stop and the series of error messages mentioned above will come up. Sometimes, if it manages to go through with the printing, it will still continue to pull an extra page after the printing job is done and get stuck again.
I am very handy when it comes to fixing things and I can follow directions if I knew what needs fixing!!
