HP Business Inkjet 2300 - Bypass INK EMPTY message!!!! Ink refills... by alwcurlz (edited 2/25/07 12:15 PM) reply + / -
I found a fix for my printer "CARTRIDGE EMPTY" lock down.

(This is a correctly revised fix as of 2006.Sep.29)

HP designed this chip on the cartridge that counts the days till death, or expiration. The empty cartridge death, which halts printing operations is when the fluid runs dry. It seems reasonable enough to understand it should stop but, if you refill it like I did then you have a problem if the printer thinks it's still empty. It won't let you print until you replace the cartridge with a brand new expensive cartridge. I REFUSE to pay those prices. SO, what I did is this: I worked for hours to find this resolve so I hope you all appreciate it! :-)

The FIX for the MAGENTA, CYAN, YELLOW, BLACK or all EMPTY message that locks the printer from printing:

1. With ink cartridge door open pull all 4 of the cartridges out.
2. Let it set for 15 Minutes. It will after that duration of time engage something and it moves the head and makes other noises.
3. Push all cartridges back in and close door. If you open the top cover or that ink cartridge door then you'll need to repeat these steps. Really simple! You'll still see the message that the inks are low, but you do need to keep track and refill accordingly. If you let them run completely dry, the heads may get damaged from burning out with no ink to cool them and die.

WARNING: Do check once in a while to make sure you don't run completely dry because I don't think these print heads like heating up without ink to cool the jets. If the ink saturation starts fading that should be obvious enough.

++++++NOTE++++++
If you open a door to replace a head or cartridge after following the above steps you'll need to start over with step 1.
++++++++++++++++

You will now be able to print!
You'll still see the annoying "blah blah INK IS LOW SEND US YOUR $$ FOR MORE INK" message, but you WILL be able to print!

----NOTE---
The expiration dates won't matter anymore with this process so, buying newer dates won't fix the issue as the printer embeds codes to the chip on the cartridge.

What I think is going on here:
From what I've read and researched the printer reads and writes the chip on the cartridge every time before, during, and after it prints. It keeps track of the "mileage" of pages printed and drops of ink expelled, an estimated ink output (I assume) to calculate when the ink has to have run out.

Good luck and let me know if this works for you!!

(update 2007.Feb.25)
My megenta ink cartridge has been telling me it will be expiring soon. I just let it set and yesterday the power went out and I shut everything down while my UPS was still beeping not knowing how long the power would be out. There were some tremendous winds wrecking havoc on power lines/trees. Power came back on. I had my magenta cartridge say it had "expired" before, but now it had expired. I could not print at all. The above procedure didn't fix the problem. Well, I decided to try a few things and finally got it working! What I did:
I powered the printer off. Pulled the data cable (USB cable) out, which is important. Disconnecting the data cable cuts off the current date information from being extracted from the computer.
I noticed the yellow color was not printing as well. I went ahead and initiated the print head cleaning cycle on the printer and it did what it did to me a couple weeks back. It gets stuck with "CLEANING PRINTHEADS" message with the green light blinking. Thankfully this does not prevent printing, but unfortunately it prevents me from entering the menu system. Something new to get figured out I guess!! If someone has a tip...let me know!!

Hope the expired ink problem fix fixes that issue on your end! If not, let me know!!

Re: HP Business Inkjet 2300 - Duplexer dry time by alwcurlz (11/2/05 9:09 PM) reply + / -
I discovered this duplexer and bought it. Print on both sides and save on lots and lots of paper!! Wow! Thing is though, it thought the page should sit there and dry. Maybe I'm impatient, but I don't need to watch the ink dry when it's not exactly a puddle. After all, what are you going to print that needs that much ink, and on both sides? I fussed and fussed with trying to figure out why when I set the dry time (under: Printing Preferences/Advanced/Printer Features/Dry Time) to 0 sec that it would still sit there for about 5 sec and not just suck the paper back in and print the other side. Pressing the form feed button to print the other side got old really quick. I searched the net high and low and found nothing.

Once again, found the solution, myself. And I posted it here! How nice of me! (breaks arm while patting back)

FIX: Set the dry time to -15 sec! HAHAHAHAH~~!

Now, as soon as it's finished with one side, it sucks the paper back in and prints the other side!! Victory!! :-D

just be careful when printing anything ink heavy-i've seen cases where the rollers in the duplexer get so dirty that they will start to leave ugly 'skid' marks on paper-
the ink dry time is there for a reason.

And there is a reason it's adjustable. :)

i've posted to this thread but don't see my response so re-iterating:

I tried your method. it worked and am very grateful but i'm not sure that here is not something else going on. i even went hunting for a lithium battery - which another link had success with by removing for an hour or so! - albeit for another printer.

As for the duplex - i really don't mind waiting - as it is, lots of black in an image smudges very badly.

I think we now have a tendency to condemn anything HP - and not without reason!

here is the link to the guy with his battery.

very interesting. I note that he is as "hopping mad" as we are.

Glad the method worked for you! As far as the delay on the duplexer, I've never had any smudges whatseover. I've printed over 15,000 pages. Not sure if that is a lot, but I've printed everything from envelopes, fliers, photographs, stiff paper so far and no problems.

Thanks for the tip but it didn't work for me. :( I tried 3 times and gave up and then I realised if it was true what you said about dates being written to the cartridges then that was the problem? Yes I set the date back 12 months on my computer and its all working again. Thanks to you I got it to work, many thanks
