Document failed to print HP PSC 1410

Document failed to print HP PSC 1410 by KittyK (10/4/05 10:31 PM) reply + / -
When attempting to print, the printing stops halfway through the first page and shows an error message: "This document failed to print". The error has occurred with Word documents, as well as PDF documents.

This is seriously frustrating me!! I have a relatively new HP PSC 1410 All-in-One Printer/Scanner/Copier, which has been working perfectly for the past 3 months. The printer has only seen light/moderate use, there should be no reason for this!!

I am using Windows XP with a Thinkpad T23. I print on "Normal" mode, NOT Best or Maximum DPI modes. This is NOT a shared printer. There have been no major changes to the laptop or the printer recently. The printer was originally on the spooling setting "Start printing immediately"

Here's what I've tried, none of which fixed the problem:
- Restarting the computer and printer.
- Checked the USB cable.
- Replaced USB cable with a brand new one.
- Changed printer setting to "Start printing after the last page is spooled"
- Changed printer setting to "Print directly to printer"
- Printed out a self-test page by pressing the Cancel and color Start Copy button at the same time (SUCCESSFUL)
- Printed a test page from WordPad in Normal resolution (SUCCESSFUL)
- Downloaded and installed the 'Critical update to fix Best printing mode' from the HP support website (even though I have never used the Best print mode).
- Emailed HP support -- awaiting their response, but not expecting much...

Unfortunately I do not have a fix for you, since I too have a similar problem.

I was wondering which document types you were printing when you got the failure.

My PSC 1410 fails on Quicken Invoices and when I could not print those out I created PDF files from them.

When I launched the PDF files into Adobe Reader, they too failed to print to the HP PSC 1410.

I have seen other web references to similar problems, but have yet to find a fix.

HP wants to blame the software vendors (Adobe & Intuit) but the likelihood of 2 software vendors having the same problem is remote.

Maybe someone out there has an answer for us. Let's hope.

To anyone reading this, your advice & suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks,
JRB

Search on HP's website for downloads for your printer re: 'Critical update to fix Best printing mode'

11: My printing begins and prints part or all of the first page then printing stops. (Applicable to the HP PSC 1400 Series All-in-Ones)
(Applicable to the HP PSC 1401, 1402, 1403, 1408, 1410, 1410v, 1410xi and 1417 All-in-Ones)
If you are attempting to print from Windows® 2000 or XP to your HP PSC 1400 Series All-in-One and part or all of the first page prints and then printing stops.
This error usually occurs when using Best, Maximum DPI, or 600 x 600 dpi modes. When this happens, you may also notice a 'document failed to print' error message on your All-in-One display.
NOTE: If printing starts and stops but eventually continues or if printing is slow, the information in the following document will not solve your printing problem.

The solution to the partial printing for the 1400 Series All-in-Ones is split into four steps:
Print a self-test page from your All-in-One
Print a test page from WordPad in Normal resolution
Print a test page from WordPad in Maximum DPI
Install the 'Critical update to fix Best printing mode'
Please click here for full instructions on each of these steps. After completing all the steps, you should find that the partial printing issue is resolved. If the fault is still evident, you should contact HP by your preferred method by using the contact link at the top of this page.

Re: Document failed to print HP PSC 1410 by Schermann (2/2/06 12:32 PM) reply + / -
No problems but I downloaded this update first...
Name:BestModeUpdate.exe
URL:ftp://ftp.hp.com
Size: 405KB
Complete Time:Wed Jan 25 05:17:21 2006
Referer:http://h10025.www1.hp.com
Comment:Operating system(s): Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows 2000

Download file size: 405.61k
... and then...
Name:DRV-CDB-enu.exe
URL:ftp://ftp.hp.com
Size: 97455KB
Complete Time:Sun Jan 29 04:43:42 2006
Referer:http://h10025.www1.hp.com
Comment:Release Date: 2005-09-18 Version: 5.3.0b
... this gives a better TWAIN interface.

Also I run 'InkSaver2' which extends the ink supplies by 700% with noticable print density (no bleeding)...
Name:InkSaver2.0_www.vanix.net.zip
URL:h**p://www.hot.ee/vaniok1/InkSaver2.0_www.vanix.net.zip
Size: 2944KB
Complete Time:Tue Jan 31 01:39:41 2006
I run PShop CS 8, ABBYY FineReader OCR with no issues.

Also I run as intermediary print applications 'FinePrintPro' and 'PDFFactoryPro' for extra benefits.

No problems so far...

Tip: ditch the CD that comes with the printer, HP sofware sucks and is buggy, just use the updated TWAIN interface and you will have no issues.

During printing the printer shut off.
I am unable to get power to it.
Is there a fuse or something I need to replace or maybe a restart button?????
I have pulled the plugs and restarted the computer, but nothing happens. Have also tried to reinstall.
Thank you.

Re: Re: Document failed to print HP PSC 1410 by Anonymous (3/22/06 4:32 AM) reply + / -
Shermann's advice seems to have done the trick. The first link for BestModeUpdate found a more recent update so probably was not that important for me. The second link for the TWAIN interface said hpfmom12.hlp not found midway through (and gave me no chance to tell it where to find the file) and so ended by saying the installation was unsucessful HOWEVER something good must have happened because my files that previously only partially printed now print completely. Thanks.

Getting error message stating "This document failed to print" but the document does actually print on it's own after a little while. The printer is a LaserJet 4050T on the network printing from an XP machine. I don't find any other problems on the network and the information does print; however, the message stating it failed to print is annoying. Also it takes longer to print when the error message comes up than when it does not come up and prints fine. I haven't been able to determine a pattern for when the error messages is received and when it's not.

Any suggestions on what I can do to correct this so the error message doesn't come up?

"Document Failed to Print" Error Message After You Upgrade to Windows XP
View products that this article applies to.
Article ID : 322961
Last Review : August 6, 2002
Revision : 1.0
This article was previously published under Q322961
SYMPTOMS
After you upgrade your operating system to Windows XP, you may receive the following error message when you try to print:
Document failed to print
Also, you may not be able to install a new printer.

CAUSE
This issue may occur when all of the following conditions are true: • You upgraded your operating system to Windows XP.
• The version of basic input/output system (BIOS) installed on your computer supports the following settings for parallel ports: "OS controlled" (or "Auto") and "Enabled".
• The current BIOS setting for parallel ports is "OS controlled" or "Auto".
Windows XP may create dummy parallel ports (for example, LPT2 and LPT3) on some computers, in addition to the already existing LPT1 port, and then Windows XP reassigns port names so that the valid port (LPT1) becomes LPT3. Any printer still connected to LPT1 under these circumstances will not print.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps: 1. In the BIOS of your computer, change the parallel port setting from "OS controlled" (or "Auto") to "Enabled". For information about how to change BIOS settings, see the documentation included with the computer or contact the computer's manufacturer.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Double-click System, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
4. Double-click Ports, and then examine the existing LPT ports.

Only one port is listed: LPT3.
5. Close the Device Manager window, and then click OK to close the System Properties dialog box.
6. In Control Panel, double-click Printers and Faxes.
7. Right-click the printer, click Properties, and then click the Ports tab.
8. In the PrinterName Properties dialog box, click to clear the LPT1 check box, and then click to select the LPT3 check box.
9. Click OK to close the PrinterName Properties dialog box.

This is an old solution to an old problem. Still, it might be what is going on with some of you. Un-coil your printer cables. Move the excess cable away from the back of your computer and it's power supply. Many printer cables are completely unshielded and stray EMF will cause problems with printing. I had this problem recently with our CEO's printer. It was driving me nuts and

Well I've got a officejet t45xi and I've been having the same problem.. It's also an all in one printer.. I thought well hell let me try and set the fax as the defult printer and see if it would let me print and it did... I can not print with the printer as the defult printer but if fax is set as defult it lets me print.. I don't know but it solved my problem maybe it would do the same for you..

I have an officejet T45xi. It worked fine up until a few months ago when I unplugged it and installed another printer. When I tried to install it again, it keeps telling me there is a communication error. I've installed the software from the safe mode and nothing worked. Finally I decided to try to install it in the portable mode, now, I still get the communication error when it starts, but when I send a document to the printer, it prints. However, the scanner and none of the other things work. It tells me there is no communication between the computer and the printer, but there must be, because when I send a document to it, it prints. Can you tell me how to install the software so that the computer recognizes the printer? When I plug in the printer to the parallel port without the software, it does not recognize it and yet I know the parallel port must work. I have it set to ecp mode like hp said.

This is the only way I could install the Best mode update from HP. The method in HP Director/HP Update failed every time I tried it but the downloaded file "BestModeUpdate" unstalled it with no problem. No more Printing crashes from the HP PSC 1410 all in one.

Re: Document failed to print HP PSC 1410 by Anonymous (4/25/07 7:54 AM) reply + / -
Try removing & recreating the port in the printer properties. If you cannot remove the current port, change the port to another and apply, trying to remove again. You may need to stop & start print spooler or reboot if you cannot remove.

Installing the BestModeUpdate.exe seems to work!!
Thank you.
Initially when i tried to print a pdf it said need to install a printer so i opened the 1410 in my 'printers and faxes' and then on the second try onwards it printed the full complete whole page without the "document failed to print error".

I have spent all day with the same problem. Every time I try to print, the printer starts and only prints a couple of inches down the paper and then I get the dreaded "this document failed to print" message. I have used this printer for 3 years without any problems. After trying every known solution to no avail, I just plugged the usb cable directly into the back of the computer and not into my new usb hub. VIOLA! Problem Solved!

The document would only print the top half of the page and then fail. I went into the printer properties under the ports tab and deselected the (Enable bidirectional support) option. This was all I needed to do to fix the problem.

This is to everyone who got the hpfmom12.hlp not found error during the instalation!
When asked for the file just go to the C:\Temp\HP_WebRelease\ENU\drivers\com_lang folder and there you should find a file named hpfmom12.hl_ ; just change the extension to .hlp and and show the installation the path to the file.It worked for me!
Cheers!

I am replying to the Schermann fix from a while back. I was having my HP printer stop halfway and send a failed print message. I also tried many things until I went online and found this fix. I downloaded this critical update ftp://ftp.hp.com suggested by mr. Schermann and it done the trick. I also found out that my HP 1400 would not print text and grafics, so this download prevents printing failures for documents with mixed text and graphics in Best or maximum DPI modes, or on photo papers. My thanks to anyone that takes the time to help solve problems. I hope this may also help someone....
