 | Lexmark 2300 Plus problems by moe (8/13/05 12:32 PM) reply | + / - | Dot matrix printers are not my cup of tea so I thought I'd post the problems here in the hope that someone actually still works on them. I happened to be cleaning up stuff in the office today when the Pizza guy across the street noticed I was here and brought them over. Needs them to print labels. Both quit at the same time. One moves the head about 1 inch when powered on and starts beeping and Paper Out, Ready and the 2 Lock lights flash. The other one will print a label and then the head slams to the left and it quits.

For the printer where the head slams to the left, does yours have a carriage home position switch on the far left on the carriage path? - you might want to check that out
On the other printer, no idea what the lights are telling you, does the carriage/printhead move smoothly by hand?

I can't remember much going wrong with these printers acually when i used to look after them, apart from printhead failures and the odd ribbon drive problem; hence why i can't offer much advise on fixing them! Post back your findings..

 | Re: Lexmark 2300 Plus problems by moe (8/14/05 4:23 PM) reply | + / - | As it turned out, the manual didn't help at all. In fact, it led me down the wrong path and wasted about 1/2 hour of my time. So I threw it aside and did seat of the pants troubleshooting. I'd never worked on dot matrixes so I thought having a manual would help. Only thing I got out of the manual was how to do a self test, which I probably could have figured out on my own since I'm real good at pushing buttons. So, on the one printer that the head would move slightly and the lights flash, it turned out to be the home switch. The contacts had somehow gotten tweaked so they were always touching. The other problem was caused by the head hitting the edge of the paper and stalling it, causing it to reverse and slam into the home switch and beep, etc. A quick look and I figured out how to adjust the head position and that was fixed as well. I do appreciate the manual. Even though it didn't help at all, it inspired me to try. You don't know what you're capable of till you try. The moral of the story is, DRTFM, it will only mislead you.
