HP officejet v40-bad service station by Delilah G. (7/31/05 4:25 PM) reply + / -
Okay....I posted a problem a few minutes ago about my officejet v40. I had 2 replies that said the problem had something to do with a bad service station. I was told to start a "dialogue" with HP about a refurbished (free) replacement. It also said to search other threads to find details. I searched, and searched, and just for a changed searched some more with no luck! The usage of this printer is VITAL!!!!! How do I start this process with HP?

Stop starting new threads! Here's another thread you can look at. Have some patience, it's Sunday. Not likely you'll get anything done today.

I have a life, and a job fixing computer equipment.

I had some more information that I researched, but as you are ungrateful and nasty I'm not going to bother posting it, if you apologize I will.

I was doing the best I could, but the communications channel you would need to use is unavailable on Sundays.

If you click on the crossed tools by my name you'll see how many threads I've contributed to, (1,159), and I don't get paid for this.

I suspect that if you start too many threads the moderator will ban you from posting on this site, and he's been known to delete duplicate threads.

Moe is the Moderator of the forums, you want to be nice to him!

Stephen is just a volunteer technician, he has been fixing computer equipment since 1978, so he does know a little bit...

HP has live chat support available for some printers Monday thru Friday from 6 AM to 6 PM Pacific time, I can't verify that it is available for the V40 since the links disappear from the support pages on the weekends, and I can't make them reappear.

Here's the link to the support page, the chat link is usually on the right side of the page.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com

Read carefully, HP is only replacing printers that have a carriage jam problem, and only certain serial numbers qualify for replacement, and you have to tell HP about the carriage jam problem you are having.

I'm going to reread your original post and see if there is anything I can add to it.

I think you were told about the service station issue because HP is only giving free replacements for printers with that problem.

Thanks for the link! I will check into that in the morining. I emailed HP and got a response in about 15 mins. They gave me a list of things to do (same ol go around) and mentioned that my product was still under warranty. They offered to replace my model (I guess it will be that 5510 model since the v40 has been discontinued) at no charge. I sent my best regards to you and thank you for your help. Thanks again.

HP officejet v40 - ink is leaking bottom right side of printer.
Replaced cartridge. Made no difference. Drained most of ink from service station but is still ponding. If only cleaning of service station is required, what is process?

Re: HP officejet v40-bad service station by Bert (11/20/09 8:19 PM) reply + / -
The case must be removed and the print mechanism partially disassembled to clean the service station, assuming that is is motor driven. Later models used a hokey setup that broke in less than a year. V40s that are still operating are almost certainly the earlier models.

It has been so long since I've seen a V40 that I can't tell you how to remove the case without seeing one. I have instructions for cleaning once the case is removed. The print mechanism is identical to the Deskjet 900 Series. If you need it email me by clicking on the crossed tools to the right of my name and ask for the Deskjet 900 Series Disassembly Procedure.

Before You Begin
You will need a T10 Torx driver and some latex gloves if you want to avoid getting ink on your hands once the case has been removed.

Use a garden hose adjusted to a slow trickle to wash the ink out of the mechanism after the service station is removed. Avoid getting water on the electronics boards, motors, and carriage (not difficult). Dry the mechanism before reassembly. I use a sunny place.

Removing the Service Station (after the case is removed)
1. Unplug the connector from the carriage drive motor.
2. Unplug the connector from the main electronics board.
3. Viewed from the front, remove the red screw from right side of the service station.
4. Remove the screw in the vertical frame to the right of the carriage drive motor.
5. Remove the screw in the vertical frame to the left of the belt tensioner.
6. Looking from the top, remove the two screws going through the carriage rod.
7. The vertical frame will now hinge up and come free of mechanism.
8 Looking from the front, there is a large latch on the right side of the service station. The wiring obscures it. Using a slot style screwdriver, release the latch and the service station will rotate CCW and lift out. Unplug the motor connector to free the service station from the mechanism.

Cleaning the Service Station.
1. Remove the service station motor by removing one screw.
2. Scrape as much congealed ink as possible from the service station.
3. Soak the service station in hot water to dissolve the remaining ink. This will take a while but after a few rinsings nearly all of the ink will be removed.

Other things that should be done
1. Clean the carriage rod with plastic polish, available at auto parts stores. Its fast and does a great job. I use Meguiar’s.
2. Clean the encoder strip on both sides with water.
3. Replace the carriage rod lubrication/cleaning felts if you can find them, 2 req'd (P/N C6409-80003). Otherwise clean them with a mild diluted cleaner, rinse and let dry, then apply Tri-Flow (get it at a cycle shop in the small squeeze bottle). NO WD40!
4. Clean the feed rollers with a cloth dampened with water.

I have sent 2 requests for a copy of HP Deskjet 900 series disassembly procedure. Any chance of getting this soon?

Thanks,
Ray

Don't know who you sent them to, but your chances are lessened since you seem to be on a V40 thread. Do a search for DeskJet 900. Chances are they're already on the forum somewhere.

I sent a message to Bert. He indicated I should request the Deskjet 900 series disassembly procedure that would indicate how to disassemble the HP Officejet V40 printer which I have. He indicated they are similar.

I just took one apart recently. You take the back off with a couple of #10 torx screws. I believe there's a connector from the speaker attached that you have to unplug from the board. There are 2 flat ribbon connectors coming from the top and 2 other regular connectors to that board as well. Disconnect those. Then pop the top off. You'll see a couple of springs underneath. Disconnect them from the back part and they'll dangle. At the front, there is a plastic piece that separates and allows the pegs from the top to come loose. Now flip the top up and you'll see I believe 8 screws holding the top onto the printer portion. Remove them. You can now take the scanner part off and the top of the printer off. The sides will fall off as there is nothing to hold them in place. You'll have to take the circuit board off the right side to get access to the service station. You'll also have to take the 2 screws out that hold the carriage rod on that side and disconnect the endoder strip and remove the metal clip that holds it. That will give you enough room to lift out the service station. I hate taking out more than necessary to do the job, but most people need to totally remove everything which I feel unnecessarily complicates things. The more you disassemble, the more you need to reassemble. See Bert's post up a little bit on dealing with the service station cleaning.

Hi Bert,
I clicked on the crossed tools and thought the message went through. Anyway, I would like you to please send me the deskjet 900 series disassembly procedure as suggested by yourself in response to my Officejet v40 service station problem.
Thanks for your help.

Ray
