Novice please help HP Laserjet 4si won't power up! by Liassides (7/28/05 2:29 PM) reply + / -
I have an HP Laserjet 4si, has not been used that much.
It has always worked perfectly but now when I switch it on - Nothing, no power, no noise, no error on the display, NOTHING! I have tried various leads and have checked the fuse in the plug. Is there another fuse inside the printer somewhere? Please help

I haven't seen a 4si that had the problem, but you will probably need to replace the DC power supply. That is what provides all the DC to run the display, motors, etc. You are of course sure that there is power at the outlet? I once went into an office with a similar problem, found no voltage at the ac plug and inquired where the cb panel was. Turned out an electrician had been working in the office and left the cb turned off. Flipped the switch, handed them the bill and left.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I am sure there is power going to to the printer - I have checked the fuse, plug and mains. You refer to replacing the DC power supply. How do I access this? I have a voltmeter - can I check anything on this before I replace it?

The DC power supply is on the right side of the printer. You have to remove the formatter assembly to access it. The plastic cover is held on by 2 screws at the bottom and then slides off to the rear. Then you have to remove the fan plate cover and then the formatter assembly. The DC power supply has a bunch of screw terminal where you can read voltages in and out.

Since you have a meter check the voltage at the wall outlet while you are powering on the printer.
