My MFC 5100c just gave me the error 41 so I called Brother and they said that the problem was the printer head and that it needs to be replaced and it would cost 29.99 for a replacemnet head plus the cost of labor. I purchased my MFC in December 2002 and we stored it for almost a year. Just recently we pulled it out, bought new ink and we began using it again for about 2 weeks. We do not use our printer much and hate to invest any money in it when I just spent all that money on new ink carteridges (which are expensive enough as it is!) I guess that I am out of the warranty period and am irritated that this seems to be an ongoing problem with Brother as I have come to find. We tried removing the printer head and cleaning it but to no avail so does anyone have any ideas on how to fix the problem or should I just trash it and move on? NEED HELP FAST!

i suggest you look up the infamous error 41 through a search on these forums.... a few select people have managed to get them working again, but for the most part, the 41 error is the kiss of death for MFC's

brother should have extended it's warranty, as it's a known problem, and somthing COUNTLESS people have been through.

try calling brother again, it's a known DEFECT and therefore they should just send you a new printer like they have done others.

Sorry, that is the best advice I have for you

Got Error 41. I ran the maintenance 84 option. Took out the print head and washed it as suggested and low and behold, it works!! There was alot of old ink in the print head. But now I will order a new print head off ebay to hold in reserve in case these methods of repair don't do the job the next time.

error 41 means the print head is clogged and this happens or because compatible ink was used and it was thicker then the original ink or the printer has been standing for a long time and the ink that was in the inkhead didn't flow and it dried up

brothre doesn't give a warranty for print heads even if the printer is one month old because they can't be sure what ink was used with the printer.

being a technician i strongly suggest using original ink in most printers, compatible ink tends to clog up brother and canon, if not the print head than the waste ink sponge, in epson the colours are weeker and you need to do a lot of cleans until they start printing which means that you empty out half of the ink so practically it is not really money saving, hp works the best with compatible ink but sometimes the electronic board is stuffed also beiing a problem
