Epson RX500 printer problems by vhbarron (4/4/05 8:41 AM) reply + / -
My printer was working fine and suddenly when I go to print, I received an error that states that I should remove any item that my be jammed, turn off the printer for a few minutes and then turn it back on. The printer console displays a error--> printing error-->refer to documentation and call tech support if necessary. I did what it said and the printer still does not print. I am planning on calling tech support today, but am kind of hesistant since the printer is probably out of warranty.

This problem usually depends by the carriage guide shaft, try cleaning and lubricating it.

The same error occurs when the encoder strip is dirty, broken or missing. Unfortunately this site doesn't have a service manual for your printer, if you want to check where the encoder strip is placed you have to download the exploded diagram from the following site:

http://www.compassmicro.com

Encoder strip is part #531 listed in page #4.

I hope this helps,

Press the setup button, scroll through the menu to "change ink" and press the color button before opening the scanner bed.

Sorry if this is duplicate post, but couldn't locate my post and thought I entered it incorrectly.
I also have an RX500 about 16 months old and out of warranty with the error message "Printer error..see documentation and call service...". Someone here mentioned carriage guide shaft and dirty encoder strip. Are these expensive repairs or might more expensive parts be involved? I spoke with Epson tech and could do nothing over phone; he referred me to a repair center and they have a $55. diagnostic fee (applicable to repairs, if desired). I am wondering if it's worth taking it in for repair. It was also mentioned here that repair centers haven't seen many of these newer machines anyway; will they even know what to do? I have had many Epsons and only had problems recently and all on the multi-function machines. Have just had two CX5200 machines stop printing as well. All,of course, recently out of warranty. Thanks.

coquinas: Servicing and cleaning of the carriage assembly and encoder strip, basically involve labor, probably at least a one hour charge, which would usually be enough to do at least a quick cleaning. You would have to check what the hourly labor rate is from the dealer you are going to deal with. Its also possible that your printer could be displaying the "Maintenance Request Error" condition. The maintenance request error is actually a Waste Ink Ink Pad Error and usually your remedy is to replace the waste ink pad/pads with a new one/ones and then reset the Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter. If that is the case, the cost of repairs could be higher, do do the disassembly and repairs involved. There are 5 pads that are usually replaced and although they are not that expensive, it depends on what the dealer sells them for. Some dealers have a minimum price point on parts, say $10.00 each. Unfortunatly, its a disposable world and newer printers are simply not made as well as the older printers were. Of course they cost a lot less and do a lot more, so one tends to offset the other. Although most "Epson Authorized Service Dealers" are not usually trained on the newer "C", "CX", "R" and "RX" models of printers, they do have on-line service manuals available thru epson company, as well as technical support directly fron epson company. So generally speaking, most epson authorized dealers should be able to repair and service your printer, but the question is if its economical to have those repairs completed or not. The only way to tell, is to get that estimate, but that will cost you that $55.00 diagnostic fee. I would suggest that you find out what their hourly fee is and guess that you may spend for 2 hours labor, plus any needed parts. Then at least you could have a general guess as to what it may cost you to have your printer repaired for. With the lower prices on new printers, generally speaking, its usually not economical to have your newer printer repaired. I'm sorry that I could not really give you a better answer, but I have never had to work on any of the newer "R" & "RX" models of printers that were not actually under warranty still. Until recently, those warranty printers were actually replaced by epson company with a Whole Unit Exchange. Now most of the "R" & "RX" models are no longer replaced, but are repaired exclusively thru an Epson Customer Care Center [that authorized service dealer]. So it looks like we start to get some on-hands training on servicing and repairing those newer models...Good Luck! Denny Conway

I have an epson RX510 (bought in Asia and same as the US RX500). I was using a continuous inking system for over two years - without too many problems. Recently I refilled the tanks, and no matter what reset I used, couldn't get the Yellow ink replacement light to go off. I got tired of dealing with it and bought genuine Epson cartridges. After installing all new cartridges, the printer now thinks all the cartridges are bad! Have tried resaeting and all manner of resetting suggested on you site. Any help would be appreciated...

Try this to reset the printer...it has worked for me a few times.

Press and HOLD all following buttons: Power, Load/Eject, Stop, B&W, Color. RELEASE BUTTONS. After this printer turns on, you'll see "Init eeprom" on printer screen. Press Color button to clear protection counter. Hit the power button and restart it.

All the printer ink is above 50% but Cyan is 20%. Would that not allow the other colors to work? I removed the ink cartridges in order to see how to remove them but wondered if this ruins it (like air getting into it or something). It wont even work in draft mode. Doesn't look like the ink is getting to the paper at all.
Any help would be appreciated.

Ed

It sounds like the ink system (pump and cap assembly) are clogged or failing. When you remove the cartridges some air does get into the printhead. However, a cleaning cycle or two usually purges it.
Hope this helps.

I tried the steps of pressing the 5 buttons to get Init.EEPROM but has been holding for few long minutes (not a very comfortable position with both hands on the buttons after a while). The exclamation light keeps blinking endlessly, nothing much seems to be happening, and no Init.EEPROM until I let go. Then, I push the Color button, which prompts me to 'push power sw', and when I did restart the printer, error message continues.

Did I do something wrong here?

Do I have to keep on holding down the 5 buttons till Init.EEPROM comes out?

My printer is still not working now... really fedup with bloody Epson for building in a chip to make us pay for extra maintenance. The printer is not small and I don't drive so that means additional cab fare to get the printer to service centre, which I am very reluctant to!

Any help or enlightenment please!

Fedup Epson User I have worked on hundreds of the R and RX printers. Frankly, I am confused by your post. What was your initial problem, error message, blinking\solid light pattern? What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Give a brief rundown and I will try to help you find a solution. Hope this helps.

Re: Epson RX500 printer problems by Fedup Epson User (9/22/08 12:36 AM) reply + / -
Dear PrinterRepairPro,

Thanks for your kind reply.

I have the Photo RX510 maintenance request error and has read about pressing the 5 buttons (power, load/eject, stop, color, bw) till one gets the Init.EEPROM message. But I was holding down for a long time, the exclamation sign keeps blinking, I can sometimes hear the print head moves a bit, then it just keeps blinking (all these while i am still holding down the 5 buttons).

To what I understand from the instructions, Init.EEPROM is suppose to come up while I hold the buttons and wait. But after 5 minutes in that arkward finger positions, I had to let go. THEN, Init.EEPROM comes up. So I proceed to next step as instructed, press the Color button - which prompts the message 'Push Power sw'. So I turn it back on but the maintenance request continues.

It seems I have done a few things correctly but missing something out. Do you understand me now?

I am trying to get rid of the maintenance request without hauling the printer to Epson with what this site says it can do from home.

Hope you can understand my problem better now.

Thanks again! Really appreciated!

Maybe you should just try doing a reset:

Press Clear+Setup+Power button. Keep it pressed for about 10 seconds :-) and let go. User right arrow key (I think 3 times) to go to reset, and press Color button. Press power button on prompt.

I had similar problem, and resolved it this way. I was trying to install a continous ink system, and the head got stuck in the ink supply ducts and the plastic holders that came with. Last night, I thought that the printer had completed it useful lifetime, but this morning a simple reset did the trick.

Lost my RX500 borderless printer. I have the RX500 and it works fine and I have an icon on the dock for RX500 borderless, but the printer won' come up. It used to work but I must have done something to delete it, and I can't find it again.
