I have an Epson Stylus Photo 1280 Printer. The Green & Red light are on solid and it wont print. I have restarted the computer, uninstalled and reinstalled the printer, tried the reset code for the printer and nothing is working. HELP!!!

Re: Epson Stylus Photo 1280 by Denny Conway (3/24/05 12:05 PM) reply + / -
bryana...Just to let you know: When both lights are on solid, that usually indicates either a "Ink Overflow Counter Reset", or a "Reset, Timer IC Reset, EEPROM Clear" service error condition. Whwn your printer is in a service error condition, it stops all operations, including DATA transfer, except for specified control panel functions. Thats why restarting your computer, restarting the printer, or uninstalling & reinstalling the printer does not actually work. The actual service error must be corrected and cleared first, before any communication between your computer system and your printer can occur...You are going to need to try and find an actual Service Manual on line, to buy and download for your "1280", to try and correct your printers Service Error Condition. You will need that manual for reference in troubleshooting, servicing and possible disassembly of your printer. Especially if you already actually tried to reset your printers internal "Waste Ink Counter" and that did not actually help. I have not checked on any particular makes or models, but here are some sources that you can check with for a possible service manual: You will have to check the following web-sites for availability [some may be able to order or locate Service manuals for you] and pricing: http://www.2manuals.com , http://www.manuals4you.com , http://www.sm.copyprofi.net/index.htm , http://www.servicemanuals.net/(qxdgvu55gnxp1r55phmu5d45)/default.aspx , http://www.docteurtech.com/CAN-Import/can-import.html , http://www.workshopmanuals.co.uk , or http://www.user-service-manuals.com/epson-service-manuals.htm ...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: Epson Stylus Photo 1280 by bryana (3/24/05 2:11 PM) reply + / -
I have downloaded the manual and it tells me the problem is either -Reset timer IC reset, EEPROM clear- or -Ink overflow counter reset- The problem is the manual does not tell me how to fix either of these problems.

Thank you Denny for the information and your help!

Re: Epson Stylus Photo 1280 by Denny Conway (3/24/05 2:34 PM) reply + / -
bryana: Be sure you read the Section 3.1.1.6, "Remedies for Maintenance Request Error", on Table 3-8 [page #70 in my manual]. Especially read the NOTE below that table, for activating the "EEPROM Initialization Mode", instead of resetting the actual Maintenance Request Error...Denny Conway

Thank you!

However I have done what it is instructing me to do in section 3.1.1.6 and I still have the red and green light on solid.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo 1280 by Denny Conway (3/24/05 2:52 PM) reply + / -
bryana...ANOTHER THOUGHT: You might aqlso want to also check out CHAPTER 5 "Adjustments", in your Service Manual and especially section 5.3.7 "Protection Counter" information [page #145 & 146 in my manual]...REMEMBER: If you just reset the internal "Waste Ink Counter" and don't replace the pads, then your printers old pads will eventually overflow and normally start leaking ink out the bottom of your printer. You can see "Exploded Parts Diagrams" of most Epson Ink Jet Printers and can also check on possible parts ordering, by Compass Micro Inc, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm . Some people actually wash the ink out of the old pads, by holding them under running cold water. Then they simply dry them out and reinstall them back into their printer. The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make. I would at least recommend getting that Waste Ink Counter reset procedure and performing it first, to make sure your printer will then work...JUST IN CASE YOU CANNOT GET THE RESET PROCEDURE IN THE SERVICE MANUAL TO WORK, THEN THIS PREVIOUSLY POSTED INFO MIGHT BE OF SOME HELP: Tim H 12/10/2003 2:46:24 Subject: Epson Reset Program Download Location. after a long search for a reset program for waste ink, without paying, i found it. goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/sscserve.exe . please check that your printer is compatible goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html . this program has other features as well...TECH NOTE: Unfortunatly, that "SSC Service Utility" does not work on all Epson Printers and not on all Operating Systems and sometimes will not even work on actually listed printer models, so you will have to check it out for yourself...I'm sorry that I cannot help you further, but I have never actually ran into that particular problem before. Also, because I actually work for an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", I am legally limited by Epson Company, to the help I can actually provide...Denny Conway

did you ever get this fixed? i'm having a similar/or the same problem. It seems to be the only epson product one can't download a free service manual for . . . one web site will let you buy about half epson's manuals for $25, or just the one for about $5, BUT of course that link doesn't work. (is it dead, Bones?)

Re: Epson Stylus Photo 1280 by Denny Conway (4/27/05 3:45 PM) reply + / -
Britta: There is a free download of an "Epson Stylus Photo 870/1270 Service Manual", from fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/reference/manuals/public/epson . Several people have posted messages saying that manual was close enough to be of help on their "1280" printer. I don't know if that is true or not, but it might be worth at least checking out that free service manual and see if it can be used as reference on your 1280...Good Luck! Denny Conway

I would like to know so I dont waste my money. The 9.95 manual is the one I'm looking at.

Thanks.

Dear Helpful soul,
I have both solid green and red lights however; my computer does not seem to have a problem. What concerns me is that since I have the red solid light I feel I must have a problem. What possibilities are there?

Thanks

Dear Experts or Any Help:

I just bought a Epson Stylus Photo 1280 off eBay, when I start it up, it goes slowly across the ink bar and then back to the right side really quick, then slowly back to the left side where you are suppose to change the ink cartridges, then it stops and the RED SOLID maintenance light comes on and stays on.

Where it stops, I can only open the black ink cartridge cover, not the color on the right side, it needs to go about another half of inch to have the clearance to open the color cartridge cover.

Now I push all the buttons, nothing happens, I shut it off and the printer cartridges stay to the left side they do not move back to the right side where they should.

I turn it back on and it repeats this action above. I have tried unplugging, re-installing the printer drivers that I got them from Epson web site and nothing seems to work.

I am running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2; I am using a USB port to hook my Epson printer to my lap top.

Any help would be wonderful on this matter, please.

Thank you,

It now appears the computer has froze up and refuses to work. I guess the red light was just a precursor to a kaput printer. I guess it’s the rubbish bin for my 1280 ciao and thanks for all the fish.

Just received an Ebay bought 1280. The heads are fine and print a test sheet for the inks when I use the buttons and the computer goes ding dong when I disconnect the usb cord but goes ding ding ding when I reconnect it (I seem to remember hearing this before on another printer that had a problem). Anyhow, no matter how many times I install and uninstall the driver, the computer doesn't detect the printer enough to send a job to it. It did actually have the 1280 logo on the printers and faxes page and it said "ready" but when I asked it to print a ink test page, nothing happens.
Could it be a faulty usb connection within the printer? I've sprayed contact cleaner on both the outlet and the cord.
Help!!!

What word processor are you using, that should define the paper source and it will just print as direct by the software.

You might need to create a USER DEFINED paper size, because I don't see it as standard, you can do it in your word processor software under PAGE OPTIONS, or click PRINT, then click on paper sizes, and go to USER DEFINED at the bottom and define your paper choice and click save, and then print, it should remain in your printer options forever, just like if you were to change the paper size to LEGAL or LETTER or CARD STOCK or anything.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
Having been an Epson tech for a few years.
I do have many of the tools (programs) for resetting waste ink counters.

I have always disagreed with Epson's method of keeping their trained technicians in business.

I knew about it several years before I started working for Epson, when I was a Canon service technician.

Canon's reset was just a button sequence that I could guide through over the phone if the job was urgent and I would arrange to have the pads checked within a few days to ensure that they would not get a messy result. The button sequence I found out from another tech for the Epson 1200 series didn't seem to work so we had to send our clients to the Epson service agent, who I ended up working for myself.

Back then Epson created a bitter taste in my mouth when client's Epson printers that I had checked out to see if I could repair, only needed resetting. Since I knew the tech only needed ten minutes to check the pads and reset the counter. In many cases the pads were physically only quarter full. We usually charged our quote fee of 20 minutes ($33) for the resetting, quick clean and a splash of lubricant. As this would all be part of testing the printer to see if more work would be required.

They were often quoted 1 to 1.5 hours (@ $110 p.h.)to replace the pads and around $40 for the pads. The pads (often 4 to 5 pads) had a retail value of (now that I know) around $12 to $20 for the lot.

They were getting quoted $150 to $195 to get the job done. Most of them just replaced the printer except those with the very expensive units like the SP-1200 series.

For the newer models of Epson printers in the past couple of years (eg. CX3900, R1800), Epson have built a time-out clause into the counter reset tool. This is so the tool will fail after a month from the download date and the technician must log in and re-download it, to validate his/her usage of it.
Is this Epson getting cleverer or dumber.
I think the latter!

All this security in the pretence of preventing the clients from making messy mistakes, like resetting without replacing full pads.
I'd let them, but I'd have proof that I warned them of the consequences and they would only have themselves to blame.

I was part of a group of electronic technicians who were against wastage and selling product just for the sake of sales figures.
I'd much rather keep these clients back to happily working with their old printers and have an ongoing service history with them. Instead of needlessly selling them new units every time a difficulty arises.

Now, products are so cheap, I know people who just replace their basic HP or Epson printer instead of purchasing new cartridges. As it is cheaper for them to do that and they get another 1 year warranty to boot.
It's a strange and silly society indeed.
Aye M8s! :-D

Regards

Gudday

Gudday,... That was a very honest post you made. Those of us that work on all kinds of printers have seen the truth ourselves. I have spent most of my time on Canon printers but I do have several Epson and HP's that I need to fix.

Are you still wroking for Epson or have you moved on. What do you do now.

I have noticed all kinds of detail design differences in the Epson and Canon printers and I clearly believe that the Canon printers are much easier to repair, and they are designed to be repaired. The good news is that you can actually buy parts for just about any Canon printer, from Canon. Their prices are not bad. Epson printers do not seem to be engineered as well as the canon. An example of this is the Purge unit. The Epson unit does not have any "Wiping action" to clean the excess ink off the bottom of the printhead. It just stays there until it dries. There also is no extra cycle in the purge system to make sure the parking pads have been sucked dry of ink before the printhead is park. If you flood the pads the bottom of the printhead will wick in the puddle and contaminate the inks.

Right now I have an Epson 1280 that started out with a simple clog in the Photo Magenta nozzles. The cleaning cycle only wastes ink and won't clean the head. What is your best process for cleaning an Epson printhead.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo 1280 by Dennis Barnes (2/2/08 5:25 AM) reply + / -
I have a syringe with a 3 inch hose that just fits onto the teats of the head and I force a little alcohol into the teat and that often clears out a clogged outlet. Another way is to pour alcohol or a window washer liquid onto the pad where the head rests when you turn the printer off (of course, it doesn't rest into the pad if you don't turn the printer off) and that often cleans the head of clogs.

I just switched to a mac that won't boot OS 9. I can't get to the Epson control panel to clean the head. Anybody know a button sequence on the printer to clean??

Sorry, I can not help you here except to say that maybe you can hook another computer up to the 1280 and order the cleaning through the 1280 controls.

For the 1200 try this. Hold both the cleaning and load\eject buttons while turning on the printer. The paper out light should start to flash. Within 3 seconds release both buttons and immiediatly push and hold the cleaning button for about 10 seconds. The printer will reset, release the button and you should be good to go.
Hope this helps.

Solid red and green lights on this model mean one (or both) of your ink cartridges are empty. Replace the ink, and try again.

Epsons do have some inherent problems, but as an Epson tech myself I'd like to clear up some misinformation on earlier posts.1)The cap assemblies DO have printhead wipers on them. They move out of the way when the carriage is out of the cap assembly.
2)The Epson adjustment programs I download and use do not have any auto cut-off dates. For example:an R1800 adjustment program I downloaded in March still works to reset the maintenance counter. I understand that Epson has started making a maintenance reset program available to customers on some products, in some areas(though I haven't seen them yet), but if the customer could use it forever then any tech out there knows that some customers would use it multiple times until ink flowed out of the printer and then they would sue Epson for damage and cleanup.

MMurray,
The public can go to www.epson.com/ipr (ink pad reset) for reset programs.
Hope this helps.

If you have blank pages or a color is not working it is usually a clog. You can use a print head cleaning kit like the one sold here and do a full cleaning job. Depending on the clog it can clear up on the first cleaning or it may take a day ot longer of soaking. But 99% of the time they do clear up.

You can get the kit here http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kits/epson/K70

For ink cartridge errors try here http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/cartridgeerror.html

And for maintenance request errors go here http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html

Re: Epson Stylus Photo 1280 by Dennis Barnes (9/18/08 10:19 AM) reply + / -
Bill,
I misread your question. Apparently the black head is clogged. What has worked for me now and then is to squirt some alcohol (see below) onto the pad where the head rests when the printer is turned off. Let it sit over night or so and that might have unclogged it. If not, what I've then done is to find a syringe to which you can attach an 1/8th inch plastic tube. Remove the black cartridge. Suck some ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL (not less than 99% anhydrous usp)into the syringe and then press the end of the tub onto the teat in the black head and force a little alcohol, if possible, into it. Let it sit a while and see if that worked.
If neither works after several tries, you might have to take it to a repairman.
Good luck!
Dennis

Re: Epson Stylus Photo 1280 by Anonymous (9/18/08 10:42 AM) reply + / -
NERER USE ALCOHOL...IT MAKES THINGS WORSE. USE DISTILLED WATER OR A PROPER CLEANING KIT. A standard syring is all you need. The tubing is just a waste of money and effort as the tubing is a little too bug for the 1280. That is something a tech should know. Listen to the techs here otherwise you can mess up your printer following the advice of a well intentioned amature.

My Epson Stylus Photo 1280 suddenly stopped leaving ink on the page mid-print without any fade out one would normally see when the heads are clogged. The printer continues to run as if it's printing, with normal movement and no warning lights. Nozzle check prints nothing. Head cleaning doesn't seem to have any effect. I turned the printer on and off and unplugged it without any luck. Any suggestions about what to do?

Re: Epson Stylus Photo 1280 by Dennis Barnes (9/21/08 5:47 AM) reply + / -
See my response above yours. Regarding alcohol use, I've heard of a lot of photographers using it. But I did order some of that safe stuff mentioned above to clean the heads.

Re: Epson Stylus Photo 1280 by printerrepairpros (9/21/08 10:08 AM) reply + / -
Hillary, Assuming that you have ink in the cartridges, I would first determine whether the pump\cap assembly is working properly. That assembly is on the right side of the printer where the carriage\printhead rests. It is held in place by a white plastic arm that pivots up from underneath the mechanism. Turn the printer off, move the arm down, and put some water on the exposed pad. Turn the printer on, run a cleaning cycle, and see whether the water has been sucked through the pad. If not, the pump\cap assembly is plugged or malfunctioning. If it is working properly, the printhead needs to be flushed.
Hope this helps.
