HP DeskJet 5550--Rapid, Fast Flashing Lights

I just recently purchased a used HP DeskJet 5550 Series printer, the printer appears operable but, when I turn it on, all of the lights on the front panel start blinking and flashing RAPIDLY and VERY VERY FAST! When I try to open the top cover, nothing happens, the cartridges DO NOT MOVE. The printer has no other functions, it only has the fast flashing lights. I have checked HP.com and their technical support page and called them and they can't help me. Does anyone know what is wrong?

The printer has a fatal error. I emailed you the link to a web page that decodes the lights.

Normally it's a bad carriage board, C6487-60003 they cost about $25.

What you need to do is to press the RESUME button. The lights will then flash differently, depending onthe error. For some strange reason, HP used to say to press the resume button, now all they say is to unplug it, and if it doesn't work, take it to service. Hmmmm... Sounds like they are trying to ear more money off of that...

Unless it's a loose cable on the back of the carriage board you will probably need to replace the printer. Lot's of 5550 information can be found at: http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/36013#1
