Artcopy55 MFC Application has encountered a proble by brgt (2/26/05 1:08 PM) reply + / -
Does anyone know how to fix this error I get when I try to scan, fax or copy?

Thanks

the artcopy55.exe uses 2 files: artcopy55.ini and artcopy55.jac. For some reason the artcopy55.jac can disappear causing the mallfunction of the aplication. The only way to fix this problem is to reinstall the entire application.

This very late reply is only for posterity - I hope it might save somebody else from needing to do the few hours of experimenting I did today when I couldn't Google up a solution.

If you're getting this error when you try to scan, fax or copy when logged on to Windows with a Limited User account (as opposed to a Computer Administrator account), read on; otherwise I have no advice to offer.

Artcopy55.exe apparently needs to be able to write to the file C:\balance.txt every time it does a scan. The default NTFS security permissions will stop it from doing this if it's run from a limited account, and instead of coping in any reasonable way with this (like, for example, simply believing the settings that are already in there) it just dies.

You should run artcopy55.exe at least once from a Computer Administrator account to let it create all the files and registry keys it needs, then apply Modify permission for Users, and Deny Delete permission for Everyone, to C:\balance.txt.

Artcopy55.exe also wants to save the scanned image into a subfolder of C:\Program Files\LexmarkX73, as well as mess with the contents of some settings files inside that folder. So you need to apply Modify permissions for Users to this folder as well. If you don't do this, copy and fax operations simply stop after performing the scan.

Process Monitor reveals all kinds of other files and registry keys that artcopy55.exe gets ACCESS DENIED results on when run from a limited account; however, it works OK with just these two changes.

If you want to apply these permissions but don't already know how, post a reply to this thread and I'll add some step-by-step instructions.

Fifteen "you guys suck!" points to Lexmark for making me waste half my day on this crap.

Flabdablet,
Please post the step-by-step instructions for modifying Permisssions so that the Lexmark X73 will copy from a limited account.

Somebody else still has this printer! I'm amazed. OK, here goes.

The most straightforward tool for applying NTFS permissions to folders and files is the Security tab on the property sheets for files and folders. If you can already see a Security tab when you right-click on a file or folder and select Properties, skip straight to step 1.

If you're running XP Home and you don't see a Security tab, run Reinhard Tchorz's excellent (and small and free and reversible) "Security for folders and files" patch:

http://www.rt-sw.de/freeware/filesecpatch.zip

If you're running XP Pro and you don't see a Security tab, open an Explorer window, go to Tools->Folder Options->View, scroll to the bottom of the Advanced Settings, and turn off Simple File Sharing.

If you're running Vista and you don't see a Security tab, I have no idea what to advise you, except perhaps to upgrade to XP.

Now that you have your Security tabs available, here's the step by step procedure for using them:

1. Open an Explorer window and navigate to C:\Program Files. You should see a folder called LexmarkX73; right-click on it and select Properties, then click the Security tab.

2. Click Add, type Everyone into the box in the Select Users or Groups window, and click OK.

3. In the Allow column under Permissons for Everyone, check Modify.

4. Click OK to dismiss the property sheet.

5. Click the Up button in the Explorer window, to get from C:\Program Files to C:\.

6. Right-click on balance.txt and select Properties, then click the Security tab.

7. Click Add, type Everyone into the box in the Select Users or Groups window, and click OK.

8. In the Allow column under Permissons for Everyone, check Modify.

9. Click Advanced, to bring up the Advanced Security Settings window.

10. Click Everyone under Permission Entries, then click Edit.

11. In the Deny column under Permissions, check Delete.

12. Keep clicking OK and Yes until all the security and Properties windows go away.

Note that these instructions give Modify permissions on the two objects I mentioned last time to Everyone, rather than just to Users. This is because the Guest account isn't generally a member of Users (but is a member of Everyone) and it would be a shame if Guest couldn't use your scanner.

If you're curious about the NTFS security model, there's a pretty good introduction here:

http://www.winxpsolution.com/ApplyingNTFSXPPro.aspx

Googling "ntfs permissions" will get you lots more.

Flabdablet's instructions have proved right on to allow using the Lexmark X73 to work with Microsoft Vista despite the lack of support by Lexmark. The printer should be set up using the Lexmark Z42 Vista driver. Combining these two things have enabled full functionality with the exception of Print to Fax. The other key ingredient is to run the software installer in Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode.

Thanks's Flabdablet!

I sent message #50614 earlier today regarding the used Lexmark X73 printer I'm attempting to get up and running. Have read your 12 steps to correct printing problems which specifically addressed users of XP Pro and XP Home. I'm using Win ME and there are no security tabs available to tweak. It appears that Ive already wasted hours in attempting to use this printer with a six year old Dell 4140. Agreed?

Re: Artcopy55 MFC Application has encountered a pr by flabdablet (12/11/07 6:28 PM) reply + / -
End-of-life Lexmark printer - strike 1
Windows ME - strike 2
Six year old Dell - your call

but if I were going to try to make *any* printer work with ME, and there were no specific ME drivers available, I'd be chasing down Windows 98 drivers since the two systems are so similar under the hood. NT-family (NT, 2000, XP, Vista) drivers will absolutely not work on a Windows ME system.

If you have trouble getting it to work even with appropriate drivers, you can also be absolutely sure that the problem has nothing to do with security restrictions, since pre-NT versions of Windows have none.

Sorry I have nothing more positive to offer.

Re: Artcopy, where do I get Z42 driver for vista? by nubile (12/26/07 2:46 PM) reply + / -
This is the closest to a solution I have found yet, except, where do I get the Z42 driver for vista?

(Lexmark says it's not compatible, and the last 30 google attempts have come up dry...

any help appreciated!

The Z42 driver isn't a perfect match but works well enough for the print only function. The Driver is included with Vista. Vista will not autodetect the printer properly however if you do a straight manual printer installation (including selecting USB port), it can be done. Unfortunately the printer I did this with is my neighbours, so I don't have access to it any more to develop a step by step.
