Epson 1280 paper light on

Epson 1280 paper light on by Roger (2/15/05 8:55 PM) reply + / -
A search of 1280 posts provided one with a similar problem as mine. The replies though didn't provide specific info on a fix. The thought was that the paper feed sensor was malfunctioning but the procedure referenced was for an Epson 960.

When powered on the printer goes through its procedure of cleaning the head but at the end of this process the red and green lights flash alternately. I have removed the cover, looked for obstructions and replaced the cartridges (Media Street CIS) without any success.

Any help would be appreciated. Also if anyone can recommend a repair center in the New York area I might use would be helpful.

Thanks
Roger

Roger: A Service Error where the power & error lights are alternatly blinking on a "1280" printer, is normally a Maintenance Request Error. The maintenance request error is actually a Waste Ink Ink Pad Error and usually your remedy is to replace the Waste Ink Pad/Pads with a new one/ones and then reset the Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter. If you just reset the counter and don't replace the pads, then your printers old pads will eventually overflow and normally start leaking ink out the bottom of your printer. You can see "Exploded Parts Diagrams" of most Epson Ink Jet Printers and can also check on possible parts ordering, by Compass Micro Inc, at http://www.compassmicro.com/parts_select.cfm . Some people actually wash the ink out of the old pads, by holding them under running cold water. Then they simply dry them out and reinstall them back into their printer. The choice on what to actually do, is yours to make. I would at least recommend getting that Waste Ink Counter reset procedure and performing it first, to make sure your printer will then work...THIS ADDITIONAL INFO MIGHT ALSO BE OF SOME HELP: Tim H 12/10/2003 2:46:24 Subject: Epson Reset Program Download Location. after a long search for a reset program for waste ink, without paying, i found it. goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/sscserve.exe . please check that your printer is compatible goto: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html . this program has other features as well...Unfortunatly, that "SSC Service Utility" does not work on all Epson Printers and not on all Operating Systems and sometimes will not even work on actually listed printer models, so you will have to check it out for yourself. Just in case that source does not work: You may actually need to go on-line to try and locate a "SERVICE MANUAL" and or the actual "RESET PROCEDURE", to buy and download for reference in disassembly, troubleshooting and servicing. I have not checked, but you can normally find Service Manuals & Reset Procedures for most Epson Printers, from 2manuals.com, at http://www.2manuals.com/index.php?cPath=2_18 . Most Service Manuals can usually be downloaded for around $10 [+/-]. The reset Procedure is usually available from the same source and is also around $10.00 [+/-]...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Roger: There is a free download of an "Epson Stylus Photo 870/1270 Service Manual", from fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/reference/manuals/public/epson , that you may be able to at least use a possible guide, on your "1280" printer. That manual may be of some help to you, in actual disassembly and servicing of those waste ink pads, but you will still need to obtain the actual Reset Procedure, to be able to reset that service error condition...Again, Good Luck! Denny,
Thanks so much for your prompt reply and the effort you put forth trying to help. I downloaded the Service Manual noted in your second post. However, the software used for resetting the Waste Ink Counter is only for Windows and I use a Mac. I also checked the compassmicro.com site for the Waste Ink Pads but they are not available. Guess my options have dwindled to taking my 1280 to the Epson repair center. There are no less than 4 here on Long Island. Better replace the original cartridges before dropping-off the printer!!! Thanks again.

Roger: Having your printer serviced, will normally be expensive. So be sure and get a quote or estimate first...As far as you having a Mac System: What most Mac owners do, is install their printer and printer cable onto a friends Windows PC, or possibly a Win's PC at work. Then they download the correct printer drivers from epson.com and then try to use that SSC Service Utility to reset that Waste Ink Pad Error Condition. If that service utility does not work, then you can always buy and download the correct Reset Procedure, from 2manuals.com ...As far as those old ink pads: Most people simply wash the ink out of the old pads, by holding them under running cold water. Then they dry the pads out and reinstall them back into their printer...Denny Conway
