 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Bert (12/18/04 10:18 PM) reply | + / - | Is the paper feeding crooked and catching on the carriage? If so, remove the rear access door and clean the feed rollers with a damp cloth. If that helps, use rubber rejuvenator. http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kkx3.html

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Wendy (12/30/04 11:02 AM) reply | + / - | darnit....my hp 6110 just took a dive. there was an error message that said to open the door and clear the cartridge jam, but actually what happened is that the long plastic thing that makes the cartridges roll has come off. Where do i put it back onto???
|
 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Bert (12/30/04 12:18 PM) reply | + / - | If you are refering to the long clear (more or less) plastic strip, it goes through a slot in the carriage, then attaches to a springy hook on the left and a stationary hook on the right. The proper name for it is encoder strip.

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Wendy (12/30/04 12:21 PM) reply | + / - | Thankyou thnakyou! Yes, that's it! i hooked it back up and am now trying to get the blasted thing together again! Is that what makes the cratridge stick? (or jam?)
|
 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Bert (12/30/04 1:15 PM) reply | + / - | The carriage counts tiny lines on the encoder strip to determine it's position. Some models show a carriage jam error and others slam the carriage to the right or left when it is not detected. If the encoder strip is installed properly, it will have little or no contact with the carriage since the lines are detected optically.

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by mwaterman (1/5/05 6:53 PM) reply | + / - | I have an HP Officejet V40 and it reads the above message. What strip are you referring to or little plastic piece?
|
 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Bert (1/5/05 10:39 PM) reply | + / - | Always open a new thread if you have a different printer!
The encoder strip runs horizontally the length of the printer, goes through a slot in the carriage, and attaches to a 'hook' at each end. It is made of more or less clear thin plastic.
If the encoder strip is in place, the odds favor a broken gear in the service station. Most of the V40 problems reported are caused by the broken gear. Generally they last about a year. HP does not sell it as a spare part. The only source is a Eastern European company that cloned it out of a stronger material. You'll have to do a V40 site search to find them.

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Kevin J (8/2/05 9:45 AM) reply | + / - | I have this same problem, but the paper feeds through and then stops just before it is completely out and released in to the tray. That's when the "Clear Paper Jam" error occurs. Tried all of the suggestions on this forum and from HP to no avail. Any idea how to tell if the gear is broken?

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by UrbanFirefly (10/19/05 1:41 PM) reply | + / - | I am having a similar problem which I have detailed in this thread:
http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/32717#7
But from reading this thread I just realized that I had a glitch before the incessant paper jam errors. About a month ago I had to send a fax, and the first time I sent it it was all skewed sideways. I had to re-do it several times to get a straight one.
It may be the last time I used it before it went kaflooey. Now it won't scan or print. SOmething else to ponder.

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Chris the computer g (4/5/06 8:23 PM) reply | + / - | Had the same problem w/customers hp 6110. Cleared her paper jam, but kept getting paper jam error message. After bringing it back to my shop checked for a bad sensor, ect. reset to factory setting, nothing.
After reading post about the optical sensor strip, had a wild thought. I cleaned the optical strip w/rubbing alcohol. Plugged it in and everything is working fine. The ink on the strip was causing a false paper jam error!!
Hope this helps.

 | Re: Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Anonymous (5/31/06 1:37 AM) reply | + / - | Chris,
Can you be a little more specific? Where is the optical sensor strip? It's near the mirrors?
|
 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by moe (5/31/06 6:19 PM) reply | + / - | The proper nomenclature is "encoder strip". It's a clear plastic strip with lines on it that runs through the back of the cartridge assembly and hooks on at either end of the printer. I use Window Cleaner on a paper towel as it works better than the 30% water solution that Chris recommended. Alcohol actually has little or no effect on ink.

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Anonymous (6/7/06 6:22 PM) reply | + / - | I've taken it apart, cleaned the encoder strip with windex, put back together, and STILL paper jam, and not dropping the page into the tray until I hit enter. No actual paper jam, just thinks so.

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Anonymous (11/21/06 9:05 AM) reply | + / - | I got this off the HP website & it helped me fix my printer.
Correcting carriage jam or carriage blocked messages:
The print carriage is the part that holds the print cartridges. Carriage blocked or jammed messages may occur for these reasons: A paper jam was cleared from the front instead of the back on models that have a rear access door. The print cartridges were installed incorrectly. There is some obstruction in the path of the print carriage. Follow the steps below to correct the problem: Open the print cartridge access door of the all-in-one so that the print carriage can be accessed.
Turn the all-in-one so that you are looking at the back side and disconnect the power cord. The power cord must be disconnected to remove all power from the all-in-one. Do not turn off the HP product first or the print cartridges will be capped at their home position and the carriage will not move. You must unplug the power cord or the all-in-one will not reinitialize. Unlock and remove the rear access door assembly. From the rear access door opening, remove any jammed paper. Use your hand to gently rotate the paper feed rollers in an upward direction about half a turn. Do the following to check print carriage motion. You may have to access the print carriage from the paper output tray on some models. Determine if the print carriage is located on the left or right side: If the print carriage is on the right but not completely right, gently push it to the right half the distance it can travel. After pushing the carriage to the right, try moving it left and right. If it now moves freely in both directions, proceed to step b below. If it doesn't move freely, repeat this step.
If the print carriage is to the left but not completely left, gently push it to the left half the distance it can travel. After pushing the carriage to the left, try moving it right and left. If it now moves freely in both directions, proceed to step b below. If it doesn't move freely, repeat this step. If the print carriage is completely left or right, plug the power cord back in and verify that the power turns on. If the print carriage moves to the center, disconnect the power cord and proceed to step b below. If print carriage does not move to the center, verify that the power is turned on. If the print carriage will still not move, contact HP for assistance. Slide the carriage back and forth across the print path to check for any obstructions. Clear any obstruction found. Also verify that the print cartridges are fully locked in place. HP Officejet 5600 and 6100 series and HP PSC 2100, 2170, and 2200 series models only: If the carriage is catching on a small round, white plastic part (absorber) that is raised, press the round part down until it is level with the black absorber.
Reinstall the rear access door and close the all-in-one. Reconnect the power cord and turn the all-in-one on. The all-in-one will reinitialize and the problem should be cleared.

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by dibu (12/1/06 9:31 AM) reply | + / - | experienced slanting of print/ "clear carriage jam + press enter" message; cleaned encoder strip as instructed and found this to be a temporary solution. Approx. every third paper feeds through w slanted print, a clicking noise occurs on right side, paper feeds through some more, followed finally by a loud screaching spine-tingling noise again from the right side (cartridge is positioned on right for each noise). This is it's final resting place. Message reappears. HELP !
|
 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Stephen (12/1/06 8:14 PM) reply | + / - | Noise from the right side is probably coming from the service station.
If the paper is feeding skewed the print will be slanted, cleaning the rollers generally fixes skew problems. (always check paper path for scraps of paper, etc)

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Colette (2/7/07 11:11 AM) reply | + / - | My problem: My encoder strip seems 'stretched'. I acutally had it off, bent the left hook so it would tighten, then replaced it. (Still slightly loose.) I was able to print for a while, but am once again receiving carriage jam message and the carriage resets itself back to the far right. I've tried just closing the front and pressing 'enter'. I get a soft tickety sound and then the carriage glides back and forth, (quietly but not smoothly) and goes back to it's far right position. I've followed all the steps I've found posted. Any other suggestions. This all started with a jammed transparency that was cleared from the front instead of back. That's when the encoder strip was initially a problem. I'm a teacher and can't afford to bring another printer from home! Help!

I did notice that the large wheels when you open theback door, only some of them have rubber rings (tracks) on them. 2 of them have no rings. Is this right?
when i press enter to clear it...it rattles and pushes the paper in the tray kind of back a tad, then acts like it wants to suck some up. then i get the paper jam mesage again.
i cleaned that clear strip and it is still doing it

 | Re: Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Stephen (edited 4/22/07 5:00 PM) reply | + / - | Colette,
When the strip gets pulled off the spring mount often gets knocked out of position.
Two flanges that go behind the metal plate the spring mount is screwed to get popped to the front.
steph1969
The two wheels without tires are normal.

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Bahra (8/2/07 8:18 PM) reply | + / - | I think the OfficeMax cartridges caused my problem. They don't seem to sit correctly. I changed the black one back to HP. So far so good. It did take a lot of opening and closing to get the cartridges out of the right corner. Open, enter and close. Over and over. It also seemed as though the cartridge holders not seated properly may have prevented the carriage from returning. Once you get it out, do not allow it to return to the right without properly securing those cartridges. If using non-hp cartridges, compare the fit, you might find it a little off, and that's all it takes to jam the carriage.

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by drytear (12/25/07 9:03 PM) reply | + / - | I have the same problem. My error is carriage jam, I fixed the metal spring bracket and that tightned it, then I cleaned it, but it still has the same message. One entry was designating a place for the encoder strip. Is there a precise location? Do I need to literally run it through something. I tried all that was mentioned and it still sazzes out and stops and has the error.

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Bert (12/26/07 6:40 PM) reply | + / - | If the encoder strip was reinstalled there is a possibility that it was not threaded through the optical sensor on the carriage. Email me by clicking on the crossed tools to the right of my name. Ask for the encoder strip reattachment photos for an Officejet 6110.

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Bert (2/18/08 4:49 PM) reply | + / - | Check for a broken carriage drive belt. It is approximately 1/8" wide, attaches to the carriage, and runs the length of the printer. If broken it will be loose.
Also check for a disconnected encoder strip. It is approximately 1/4" in wide and made of thin plastic, and runs the length of the printer. It should be attached on the right and left.
Let me know what you find and I'll discuss how to repair it.

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Martiart (9/3/08 3:38 PM) reply | + / - | I'm receiving a carriage jam error. Looking at the font of the unit, my cartridges are jammed to the right. I can't seem to move them to the left; previoiusly. I had a clicking sound in the printer for awhile.
I cleaned the two 1/2" white strips that are connected to the print units. At the center point of each strip, there is an overlay opaque strip (1-5/8" long) that hangs below each strip about 1/4"; in each opaque strip there is a long (3/16") cutout and a screw-sized cutout. They correspond with a plate behind them that is part of the main unit. Should these strips be attached to the unit with a screw or other device? Is the fact they are hanging loose (and covering a green plate with two silver knobs) causing my problem?
Any help is greatly appreciated . . . Thanks!

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Bert (9/3/08 10:25 PM) reply | + / - | Make sure the encoder strip is attached on both ends. It is made of thin plastic 1/4" wide and runs the length of the printer.
If the encoder strip is intact your problem is a jammed service station (far right). The jam could be caused by ink buildup (a byproduct of priming the cartridges) or the service station drive motor has failed. I would start by cleaning the service station. This involves removing it, removing the drive motor, scraping out congealed ink, and then soaking the service station in hot water to dissolve the remaining ink.
If the motor has failed the only source of spare parts is scrap printers. Several printers that use the 56/57 cartridge set utilize the same motor.
If you need further help email me by clicking on the crossed tools to the right of my name. I'm currently working on a 6110.

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by pdl1 (12/10/08 6:44 AM) reply | + / - | I won't get fooled again. This POS HP printer gives a "carriage jam" notice whenever the inl cartridge carrier is not detected to be where it is supposed to be. It is rarely actually jammed. The causes (and cures) seem to be: 1. Make sure you removed the little strips from the new printer cartridges 2.Make sure the cartridges are seated properly 3.The plastic sensor strip that runs across the printer right behind the cartridges may be spattered with ink. Clean with Windex. 4. The strip may have broken or come off hooks. This strip tells the printer where the cartridges are, so any problem with it => "cartridge jam" error message 5. The system may be out of alignment. Usually pulling the plug and restarting fixes this, but rarely you have to program it manually. Several posts describe this. 6. The cartridge drive belt may have broken or stretched so it falls off. If this is the case, the cartridges won't move. 7. Unusual problems may actually break the machine. I personally doubt they're worth repairing.

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Martiart (12/10/08 7:04 AM) reply | + / - | After many frustrating hours of trying to resolve the problem, I contacted HP. They offered me a new 6310 for $94 to replace my 6110. I shipped my 6110 back to them in the prepaid box in which my 6310 arrived. The 6310 doesn't have the weight of the 6110, it's just a plastic box. We're co-existing at this point. The print quality doesn't come close to the 6110! I need iron-on transfers for my business, the 6310 will not reverse an image to make a transfer (I now flop on my computer first). There are idiosyncracies I've noticed but not made note of; and, it seems to be more difficult to fiddle with. Of course, it uses different cartridges.
I want my 6110 back (fixed). . . but, I shall not complain too loudly, as all computers talk to each other and my 6310 may become aware of my complaints!

 | Re: hp 6110 carriage jam by Andee (2/23/09 6:22 PM) reply | + / - | I have a 'cartridge jam" message and a stuck cartridge carriage (all the way LEFT). open door and inspect then close and hit 'enter' several times. turn machine off and on several times and let initialize;repeat open/close door routine. Then, from reading previous posts, unplugged power cord took back door off turned wheels upward about 1/2 turn (no paper there) closed and plugged in power - let initialize unplugged power again - cleaned the encoder strip as far as I could reach it (could not get behind carriage very well) tried moving carriage gently to left - it moved a little, but not much Encoder strip is attached and not loose Belt is attached and not loose. Looked for small white 'absorber' but could not locate it. tried to get cartridges out to see into carriage, but cannot remove them (not enough clearance?).
Bonehead disclosure: I cleared a paper jam (it had grabbed several sheets together) from the front instead of the back before this happened. Have never had problem with the printer that a reset or alignment could not fix.
I would appreciate any other suggestions!

I read through this thread and thought I'd look to see if the white strips (encoder?) needed cleaning or reseating. Discovered a narrow black strip (less than 1/4" wide) that appears to be broken & loose. What is this? How can I fix or replace it? How do I get access to this part of the printer? Should I be taking other steps to fix the "jam".
