hp psc 2210 by T. Childerhose (12/8/04 9:34 AM) reply + / -
I am getting a cartridge jam message but it is free to move. There is a thin black plastic strip that has come off on one end. I do not know how to thread it properly. Any help would be appreciated.

If you are refering to the strip that runs horizontlly the length of the printer, it is the encoder strip. It threads through a slot in the carriage and attaches to a springy hook on the left and stationary hook on the right. The tiny lines on the strip are sensed optically, so when installed correctly, it should have little or no contact with the carriage.

how do I re-install it. Do you have a picture of where it goes. What is a Torc screw.
Todd
Thanks for the help.

I don't have a picture. The best I can do is tell you how to remove the case for a better look. A Torx head screw requires a star-like driver. You can get them at hardware stores or tool specialty stores.

PSC 2110, removing the case

1. Remove the rear access door and the rear panel. The panel is held in place by two T10 Torx head screws.
2. Looking from the rear, disconnect the three cables on the left. Take note of how the two ribbon style cables are plugged in because they can be rotated 180 degrees when replugged.
3. Open the printer as if you are going to change the cartridges, then release the latches on the left and right and the scanner will rotate upward and lift off.
4. There are several T10 screws (they are obvious) that need to be removed and the rest of the case, a top and the two side covers, will come off.

Re: hp psc 2210 Scanner Carriage Jam by shailesh (9/28/07 6:54 PM) reply + / -
When I switch on my printer it does it initialisation. The cartridge carriage moves back and forth and seems to be working fine. The scanner light bar coomes out a bit and then goes in to right in many steps. It goes in all the way that I can not see it. After that it does not seem to come out and the printer keeps on making many cliking sound. If I do not turn off the printer for few minutes I get a scanner failure message.
Anybody has any idea what is going on. Please help as I need this printer and scanner and can not afford a new one.

Re: hp psc 2210 by Bert (9/28/07 7:15 PM) reply + / -
A clicking (grinding) sound coming from the scanner is caused by the scanner head drive belt slipping, most likely because it cannot find it's index position (or home position). Failure to find it's index position (IP) causes the scanner head to eventually hit something solid causing the belt to slip (grind, grind). The scanner establishes it's IP by detecting a white strip on the underside of the glass on the far right.

Why can't the scanner head find the white strip that it indexes on? There are several possibilities, the main electronics has failed, the scanner head has failed, the white strip it too dirty to be detected, or the scanner head bulb and/or mirror are dirty. (A dirty scanner head bulb or mirror is sort of like me trying to see through fogged glasses).

Do a reset. (Press and hold the # and 3 buttons while plugging in the power.) If that doesn't cure the problem clean the underside of the glass, giving particular attention to the white strip. Then clean the scanner bulb (gently, its thin glass) and the mirror (in the long slot) with a cotton swab sparingly moistened with Windex or a similar cleaner.

Go to this web page for instructions on removing the scanner glass.

Hi,
I opened the scanner glass as instructed by Bert, cleaned the glass and underside white strip with windex and it worked. Thanks a lot for saving my hp psc 2210 Bert.
I have a new problem. I installed a new aftermarket (but new) color catridge and it goes repeated in aling mode and cancels the alighment process half the way. I pressed options ans set up button together and the message went away and printer stopped attempting to realing. It is printing now but, the color printing is very poor. I can see lines. Any idea how to solve this problem. I did repeated cleaning and alignment through the printer maintenance option.

Re: hp psc 2210 by Bert (9/29/07 12:32 PM) reply + / -
The 56/57 cartridge set has been problematic when refilled. The alignment will fail if colors are missing.

Verify that ink can flow from the cartridge(s) by blotting the print nozzles on a damp paper towel a few times for two seconds. You should see all of the colors (three-color cartridge: yellow, magenta, and cyan) that are supposed to be in it flowing freely. If you do not, in spite of ink being in the cartridge it is defective.

I was having the cartridge align problem so i changed the cartridge again ..black..then it said to check and reseat color cartridge...when I did the flip over retainer clip broke. Am I out of luck or can it be replaced?

Re: hp psc 2210 by Bert (10/2/07 4:37 PM) reply + / -
The part seems to be unavailable on the web. The P/N is C6490-60012 if it can be found. You can try finding a scrap printer that uses the latch. HP made a lot of models that used the 56/57 cartridge set.

I was recently given an HP PSC 2210 that was headed for the dump for exactly the same symptoms. I have followed your directions but gained no improvement.
Is it toast or are there other remedies?

Well, this forum software doesn't work as I expected. Let me elaborate.
Printer carriage initializes just fine. Scanner does not. Comes out about an inch, then works its way back to the right, and then bumps up against the stop, still trying to find its IP.
I have cleaned the glass, the light, and the mirror, done the reset thing (3+# while plugging in), and it doesn't fix things.
Is there any place other than the dump to go from here?

Re: SCANNER GRINDING by TROUBLESHOOTING (8/19/09 12:54 PM) reply + / -
I FOUND THE PROBLEM WITH MY SCANNER HEAD TRYING TO RESET WAS THE LITTLE BLACK AND WHITE STRIP ATTACHED TO THE BOTTOM EDGE OF THE GLASS . I LEFT THE WINDOW OPEN NEXT TO THE SCANNER AND A SMALL AMOUNT OF RAIN HAD BLOWN IN AND LEAKED UNDER THE GLASS. THE RAIN HAD BEGUN TO SEPARATE THE BLACK AND WHITE STRIP THAT THE SCANNER USES TO RESET ITSELF DURING INITIALIZATION . I (GENTLY) WARMED THE BLACK STRIP WITH A LIT MATCH AND PRESSED TIGHTLY ON THE STRIP TO REATTACH IT TO THE GLASS . I PUT THE TOP BACK ON WITH THE GLASS . I DID NOT EVEN HOOK THE BUTTON CONTROL MODULE BACK UP. JUST SET THE GLASS AND THE TOP ON AND PLUG IT IN ! SCANNER HEAD FINDS HOME NOW EVERY TIME !! I DID FIND A HAZE OF DUST (DIRT) OVER THE MIRRORS , BUT CLEANING THEM DID NOTHING TO STOP THE SCANNER HEAD THAT KEEPS TRYING MOVE. IT WAS ALL THAT LITTLE BLACK AND WHITE STRIP . LOOK CAREFULLY FOR ANY SEPARATION OF THE WHITE OR BLACK TAPE THAT ATTACHES THE STRIP TO THE GLASS. ESPECIALLY NEAR THE BACK OF THE UNIT WHERE THE SCANNER HEAD READS THE STRIP THAT TELLS IT TO STOP !!!! YOU WILL NEED A NO. 10 TORX HEAD SCREW DRIVER TO REMOVE SEVERAL SCREWS TO REMOVE THE GLASS . HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE WHO HAS TRIED EVERYTHING LIKE ME . CAREFUL THOUGH , DONT BURN A HOLE IN THAT TAPE STRIP AND CAUSE MORE DAMAGE !!! THIS ACTUALLY WORKED WHEN NOTHING ELSE WOULD ! AND WHEN YOU PLUG THE CONTROL MODULE BACK IN , THE FLAT RIBBON CABLE HAS A BLUE SIDE AND A WHITE SIDE TO IT. THE BLUE SIDE SHOULD FACE YOU WHEN YOU PLUG IT BACK IN . IT WILL NOT WORK THE OTHER WAY .

Blue alignment light does not turn on after replacing HP cartridges by new HP ones. The printer asks for cartridges alignment, then paper jams and sometimes it asks for a wider paper.Messages are cyclical. I already reset the printer to original setting, tried set-up + options, and #+6 option. Messages are cyclical. What could be wrong and how I could fix it?

Thanks beforehand for your response.
