 | epson stylus 1290s by Sheila P (10/15/04 12:14 PM) reply | + / - | Hi, anyone know how to reset the epson stylus 1290? I use an ink cart feed system and when filling up the tanks recently unfortunately left the feed tube higher than the print head. Result was air in ink supply and print head mechanism shot up the left hand side and banged into the side a couple of times then tried to carry on printing. When I tried a cleaning cycle - I had spotted colour cast on the print but not spotted air bubbles in tube - i ended up with red ink light and green power light both flashing - daily use manual says unknown printer error, turn off machine and contact dealer. I have now replaced ink cartidges with epson ones and tried to get it to recognise this - looking at ink tanks on printer software they remained grayed out. Yellow button on printer to access print head does not work - instead I depressed small knob under ink holder in order to slide these gently along to the left when replacing them. Speaking to a dealer today he tells me that it has 'tripped' the system toprevent damage to the print head and needs to be reset. In order to do this I need to send him my printer (costly) and the repair costs then are about 50% of a new printer, plus if it needs a new head thats almost the same as a new printer. Is there someway of either resetting software or reinstalling driver that will 'reset' this? or is there a mechanical solution to this eg some reset knob or switch inside the housing? I cant afford to be without this printer for the length of time needed to parcelit up and send it away, so if anyone can help I would be eternally grateful. many thanks Sheila

 | Re: epson stylus 1290s by Sheila P (10/17/04 10:53 AM) reply | + / - | Hi, have downloaded software and looking like it might be the answer. Help file says to change pad which soaks up excess ink during cleaning cycles before resetting counter, to avoid damage to printhead. Having taken top off printer there is a lot of ink washing around and pas is completely soaked - can you tell me where i can order spare part - new pad - from, and also get a manual for this printer to make sure I replace it properly without breaking it! Thanks again.......

Squeeze dry before replacement. I got a repair manual and reset program on disk some months ago from www.2manuals.com .Received inside of 10 days to U.K. although I believe it came from former Soviet bloc. I do not know if they are still on the go. Download of repair manual and reset program were also available. However obtained they are only for use with WINDOWS 98 / 98SE. Hope this helps.

 | Re: epson stylus 1290s by Eddy (10/17/04 1:11 PM) reply | + / - | The pad which you can easily see with the upper housing removed is not the pad that requires replacement. The waste ink pads are located underneath the printer mechanism assembly.

It covers the 440 which is the same basic desing as the 1290. Once at the link click on the housing removal if you need to know how to remove the housing. Wes.

 | Re: epson stylus 1290s by DAVUID U.K. (10/17/04 3:36 PM) reply | + / - | HI SHEILA, Yes Eddy, you are right, the pad which you mention in the upper housing is not the "waste" / "absorber" pad. That part is the "capping assembly" and raises up on to the "working side" of the printhead to enable the pump to suck ink through the nozzles and to the waste pad. That "routine" happens at power up and at other times during use. *****"""""Hi, have downloaded software and looking like it might be the answer. Help file says to change pad which soaks up excess ink during cleaning cycles before resetting counter, to avoid damage to printhead. Having taken top off printer there is a lot of ink washing around and pas is completely soaked - can you tell me where i can order spare part - new pad - from, and also get a manual for this printer to make sure I replace it properly without breaking it!"""""***** I HAVE FOUND MY DISK. Sheila, the "waste ink pad", called "absorber" in the service manual,is in the "lower tray" in the bottom of the printer (as Eddy says) and is quite easy to remove by following the instructions, which are quite lengthy. You may be able to do it without if you can just figure out how to get in. I have read the manual and find that I cannot "copy" and "paste" those instructions, (YES, BEFORE ANYONE TELLS ME, I KNOW THAT WOULD BE AGAINST COPYRIGHT !!!!!) to enable me to re-write ( IN MY OWN WORDS !!!! ) for you. The 2manuals.com "reset program" is for use under WINDOWS 95 on LPT1-LPT3, AND WINDOWS 98 / 98SE on LPT1-LPT3 AND EPUSB1-EPUSB3. If you are normally using the printer on any other O.S. then the easy way is to do the resetting on another PC as the program resets the printer, not the PC. The error message ( protection counter error, as mentioned by NEWUSER above )for a full waste ink pad is, as far as I know, "software generated" by counting the actual time that the pump has been used and not some kind of "level sensing" of the waste ink in the pad. Having re-read your description of the problem, and your mention of "a lot of ink washing around", I think that you may have a problem with the "encoder strip" rather than the waste pad. The encoder strip tells the printer control software the position of the head along the carriage. You mentioned the head crashing into the left side end. If the encoder strip is dirty, with ink perhaps, damaged or disconnected from its mountings, it will not allow the head assembly to position correctly. Cleaning / remounting and powering up will cause it to crash again into the end, but may then have "found" itself. You mentioned that Epson cartridges are "greyed (U.K.)/ "grayed" (U.S.A.) out", that may be because of ink or other contamination on the contacts in the cartridge carriage preventing information being taken from the cartridge. Simple question, have you removed any tapes which may be on the cartridge contacts? Easy done perhaps if you have used a CIS for a while. I will assist further if I can.

 | Re: epson stylus 1290s by Sheila P (10/17/04 3:51 PM) reply | + / - | David, and Wes And Eddy - many thanks to you all. The pads under the print head assembly didnt seem that soaked at all, it was just the capping assembly and Ive carefully 'mopped up' most of that. I will order a new waste pad if i can find the spare part number/supplier, but for now have taken a risk and reset the counter using the software from SSC which seems brilliant, particularly since I use the ink cart feeder system. I have been using it for 18 months with no problems and saved so much money compared to replacing Epson cartridges! Thanks to one an all for your help, very much appreciated - now i can get my college assignment done tomorrow. cheers!

 | Re: epson stylus 1290s - random lines on prints by Steve (10/30/04 4:11 AM) reply | + / - | Hi - I have a bad feeling this could be the heads. The printer clogged and I cleaned as usual to no avail. (I have found recently it takes about a quarter cartridge following a change before it will print properly) I cleaned the head (as suggested on another site) with a small pad soaked in Windowlene left over night. There was ink everywhere round the cleaning pad (machine has been used a lot for A3 hi-res prints.) NOW I have intermittent thin colored lines through my prints. Someone else I knew had this and the heads needed replacing. Any ideas? Is is easy to replace the heads? (I've had the head assembly out but the ribbon seems to be hard fastened to the board.) I am familiar with working on PC's and cameras so it can't be that difficult....

 | Re: epson stylus 1290s by newuser (10/30/04 7:59 AM) reply | + / - | Heads are simple to replace since the ribbon cable is simply inserted into a slot, however it is necessary a program (adjustment program) to set the correct head voltage, without which you may experience poor quality or no print at all. Remember also that heads are really expensive, a printhead for 1290 down here costs more than 150$. Are you using original cartridges?

 | Re: epson stylus 1290s by steve (10/30/04 11:45 AM) reply | + / - | err - no. I was doing a large amount of printing and simply could not afford the 24 UK Pounds it costs to replace both carts. So there goes the life warranty on the heads... By my reckoning I've saved 100 pounds on ink, it'll cost about 180 pounds to repair the printer professionally (heads 100 pounds in the UK) so cheaper to trash the printer and buy a new one methinks. It's developed another fault too - the thing suddenly stopped printing and the heads shot to the parking position with a 'bang' and the red light came on. Oh dear...
|
 | Re: epson stylus 1290s by newuser (10/31/04 12:43 AM) reply | + / - | Usually the bang is caused by insufficient lubrication of guide shaft: I've solved this problem with a common penetrating oil, it evaporates quickly but it doesn't leave spots on paper and it is easy to place near the carriage. Third party cartridges may be responsible for the poor quality of your prints, the problem often comes by loose sealing rings which leave air passing through the printhead. I've obtained better results refilling original cartridges with bulk ink, they can be refilled at least 10 times and the print quality is unchanged.

 | Re: epson stylus 1290s by Steve (10/31/04 4:04 AM) reply | + / - | This has turned into a real disaster - I removed the head assembly completely and refitted. When I switch on the machine now the carriage flies across to the left then back to the right and the red lamp comes on. I see there is a photo sensor on a small PCB through which a translucent ribbon runs - I have a concern that this may a more serious fault. Any ideas anyone??!! BTW - I now find that two friends have had the same problem with colored lines on Epsons; both times it was the heads, both times they junked the printer due to repair costs.

 | Re: epson stylus 1290s by newuser (10/31/04 7:55 AM) reply | + / - | The green ribbon is the encoder strip and it is used by the printer to calculate the real carriage movement. This strip and the sensor can be cleaned with ethanol. You should check also printhead ribbon cable, if it is badly inserted it could cause the problem you just described. I've been using Epson printers for several years, all with third party ink, but I've never seen a damage printhead. For example I own a 777 printer which has the same printhead of your one, 288 nozzles organized in 6 rows of 48, and after three years of continous work it is still in perfect condition.
