 | canon s520 by terrence cameron (8/29/04 7:09 PM) reply | -1 + / - | Hi ... Our Canon s520 printer prints color perfectly but refuses to print in black. We have put in a new black cartridge (correctly) and still no black printing. When printing on a colored background we get white where it should be black. Please assist if possible ... thanking you... terrence.

If anyone can share some light on this it would be much appreciated :o) Dylan

 | Re: canon s520 by David (10/10/04 10:51 PM) reply | + / - | I hope someone is still monitoring this thread because I had the same problem facing me tonight with my S520. The only thing different was my operating system had changed (XP) along with some recent MS patches (and we all know how those break more things than they fix!) Well, what I found out with mine was that as long as I choose photo paper as my media in the printer dialog box instead of plain paper, I CAN PRINT BLACK AGAIN !!! If anyone else finds this to be true, please reply so I won't think I am crazy.
|
 | Re: canon s520 by Gary (10/11/04 8:45 PM) reply | + / - | Hi David, You're not crazy. I was actually going crazy with no black printing. I haven't changed OS (win98), but suddenly I can't print black. Did change the media to photo paper like you did, now I can print black! Thanks for the post. Wonder what caused it though? Gary

 | Re: canon s520 by David (10/11/04 9:46 PM) reply | + / - | Did you recently download any updates from Microsoft (Windows Update) or change your driver? It has to be either the driver or an update that Microsoft recently sent out. I am using the driver located on Canon's website (most recent) but I think I am going to try using an earlier driver if I can find one... By the way... you can chose any type paper as long as it is NOT plain paper. David

 | Re: canon s520 by Ed Roper (10/11/04 9:55 PM) reply | + / - | Not a printer expert by any means and I may look stupid here but I believe most windows drivers mix colored ink for black when printing on photo paper whereas they actually use "black" ink on normal paper. (Prepares to look stupid)

 | Re: canon s520 by Karen Sampson (10/15/04 1:45 PM) reply | + / - | This is strange, I have the I560, I did everything short of blowing mine up trying to get the black to print?? I changed it to Photo as above suggestion and now it works. Mine just quit printing black a couple days ago for no reason. One page was striped and the next nothing. Thank-You for providing a fix!!

 | Re: canon s520 and i560 by Mark (10/28/04 4:46 AM) reply | + / - | I have the same problem with the i560 -- suddenly no black. I have cleaned print head and replaced tanks. I'll look at the driver next. I did not change OS or even add any service packs -- I'm using W2k SP4 -- so I'm a little doubtful of the cause in my case. Even though I'd welcome the paper setting suggested here, I am concerned that my black output will come from the 3 color tanks rather than the black ink tank; that could be an expensive outcome for the amount of black printing I do. Has anyone had success with the paper setting and drawn down the black ink tank?

 | Re: canon i560 by Jon (11/11/04 7:12 AM) reply | + / - | My printer has also just recently stopped printing black! I have cleaned, realigned the nozzels, bought a new cartridge, etc and nothing works. Trying to set the media type to photo paper from plain paper doesn't seem to work either as I lose that setting as soon as I close the window and it defaults back to plain paper. What am I doing wrong?

 | Re: canon s520 by keith mason (11/14/04 2:41 AM) reply | + / - | I have a Canon i950 and it has done exactly the same thing after 15 months of perfect usage. Nothing has changed and I have added no programs that would have affected the printer drivers. I have tried the suggestions and find that yes, I can now print in "black" but it is a black made up from the colour cartridges, not from the black cartridge!! Something seems seriously amiss if so many Canon printers are suddenly experiencing the same problem. Has Canon been contacted and asked for help?? (In fact, is it even POSSIBLE to get Canon to service their own printers???)

 | Re: canon s520 by Bill (11/14/04 11:30 AM) reply | + / - | I too experienced the same problem with black ink on my S520. After some research, I found that the cause was a blockage in the black ink head due to using some poor quality replacement ink. Yes,choosing "Photo" will let you print in "black", but this "black" is made from the other three colors. If you run the "Nozzle Check" test in the Maintenance software, you will see that no black ink comes out in th pattern. What I did to get my printer back running again was to remove the printer head and cartridges. Put the cartridges in zip lock bags so that they will not dry out. I heated some distilled water and dipped the head assembly in and dabbed it on paper towels until the head was cleaned. I changed bothteh water and the paper towels regularly. The ink is water based and the clog just need to be cleaned out. I then re-installed the assembly and cartridges and ran through the cleaning steps in the maintenance steps. I ran the "Nozzle Check" and the full pattern printed. I hope this helps.

 | Re: canon s520 by Jon (11/14/04 11:41 AM) reply | + / - | I finally took my i560 back to the dealer and it wouldn't print black for them either. I was told it was a failing part that was under warranty. For $20 they upgraded me to the next best Cannon Pixma 4000 and continued my warranty with that machine. I am now back in business but Canon needs to get out some information about was is going wrong with so many of its machines.

 | Re: canon s520 by Kirk (11/16/04 8:13 PM) reply | + / - | I looked this site up when my Canon S520 wouldn't do black, but I fixed it when I selected Preferences, Options and then Deep CLean. It cleaned, hummed and choked for a while, and then printed black fine. I run Windows XP, but I don't know if that makes a difference.

 | Re: canon s520 by showdoc (11/18/04 2:15 AM) reply | + / - | Ditto on the black ink non-printing! Mine's an i560 - tonight downloaded the new drivers/apps and ran a nozzle alignment... no numbers...no black ink!!!! saw these posts - ran a normal cleaning cycle - and tada!!!! black prints great (actually ran 3 cleaning cycles only on the black) i hadn't noticed it because 99% of my printing is on photo-pro paper, so it doesn't really show if the black is not printing... guess i need to print some stuff to normal paper every now and then to keep the black print head clear thanks guys... an easy fix! (hehehehe i too swapped back to my original print driver disk and thought it was odd that only "text" wasn't printing... :) morelater the show doctor

 | Re: canon s520 by matthew (11/19/04 2:19 AM) reply | + / - | i have an S520, the black seems to be printing(whether it's the black ink or not is another story) but every colour seems to skip a line so through out the whole page i have white vertical lines. could it be blocked heads? I'm running XP w/ the latest drivers.

 | Re: canon s520 by Ryan (11/19/04 10:51 AM) reply | + / - | WOW! I can't get over how many people are having the same problem! I've tried everything suggested here with no luck... my s520 still will not print black! I have even tried the deep cleaning and regular cleaning several times! I'm about to try some new drivers, but it seems like most people think it's the printer heads. . . I don't know, it's driving me nuts!

 | Re: canon s520 by Michelle (11/23/04 10:16 AM) reply | + / - | Bill, I shall try your suggestion of cleaning the printhead. My S520 has had very little, sporadic use, ink is fine, it just suddenly refused to print. I've been debating buying a new printhead or a new printer...definitely not a Canon as my printer is only 15 mos. old, bought new with warranty. If I'm successful I'll post again. I bought this particular model printer as Consumer Reports listed it as one of their "best buys".

So many people on the internet are chucking the printer and having to buy new ones, and I thought I would have to also, but the selection of a different type of paper may work for you too! Thanks!!!

 | Re: canon s520 by keith mason (11/26/04 2:55 PM) reply | + / - | Well,, REAL success at last, (with any luck.) (Remember my i950 was having the same problem of suddenly not printing black??) I've read all the postings and possible solutions, and cleaned the head and tried changing the paper setting etc, all to no avail, and have resisted the temptation to spend nearly £90 (uk) on a replacement print head as some people have done this to no effect. Last week I bit the bullet and packed my printer back off to Canon at a cost of £11 odd p&p. They have contacted me today and said that the printer has been fully serviced and repaired and is now 100% and on it's way back at a cost of around £45 including return postage, vat etc. The problem, it seems, was NOT the print head.. which is functioning perfectly, but a chip on a circuit board inside! (If I get any more detail on which one I'll post it here) . So, it seems that the answer to everyone's problem is to get their printers packed off to Canon and concede that repairing this kind of fault ourselves is not really on. Apart from anything we have no way of testing the microelectronics to ascertain just what is wrong. One more thing..I sent the printer back direct, myself to Luton, rather than doing it through the original printer supplier as they were quoting a turn around of something like 6 to 8 weeks!!! I hope this helps someone else.

 | Re: canon s520 by Michelle (11/28/04 6:21 AM) reply | + / - | I finally got the time to try what Bill had suggested as a fix for my printer, removing and cleaning the printhead, etc. and it worked like a charm. Thanks so much, your comments made perfect sense and have of course saved me from much hassle and expense. Everyone else experiencing the "black" problem should try cleaning their printhead as per Bill's instructions. This is a great site and well worth my time spent searching for it! Thanks for the help, Michelle

 | Canon i560 won't print colour by gerry (11/28/04 2:53 PM) reply | + / - | Just got this printer, and it is printing the BLACK just fine - but I can't get it to print COLOUR. I can't find anything wrong with the driver or the settings, but I'm not an expert with this stuff so perhaps I'm missing something. What should I try?

 | Re: canon s520 by keith mason (11/29/04 10:11 AM) reply | + / - | The print head of my i950 had been thoroughly cleaned and was working properly but it did not revive the black ink. It seems that the real fault with was a Logic PCB which needed replacing. Whilst I appreciate that many may have a problem with the same symptoms and may cure it by cleaning or replacing the print head, maybe others have faulty PCBs without realising it and only Canon can replace these (or even diagnose the fault!!) As many of these printers share similar technology it certainly seems likely.

 | Re: canon s520 by Wayne (12/8/04 1:07 PM) reply | + / - | I have this problem: Printer lights up green then blinks orange 3 times, then alternates green/organe repeatedly. Naturally, in this state it will not print at all. I called Canon tech support and they said to bring in the machine. However, I've lost my receipt and am not sure if it's still under warranty. So I took a crack at cleaning the heads myself with alcohol (which I understand now is not recommended). Anyhow, the printer worked and I thought I had fixed the problem. I actually printed at least 100 pages of color photos after that. Anyhow, the problem resurfaced. I cleaned it again with alcohol and q-tips (again, apparently inappropriately) and got it working once more, but this time only for about 10 more prints. I haven't tried the distilled cleaning (which I will) but does anyone know whether I've got another problem or the same one that you guys are talking about (with the clogged head)?

 | Re: canon s520 by James (12/8/04 11:02 PM) reply | + / - | I have a different problem from above. All of a sudden our photos were getting grainy. When I ran a print test, I was getting only half of the cyan printing out. I went through the cleaning steps (clean, deep clean) to no avail. Then I tried Bill's suggestion. Still no avail. It is as if it is a hardware problem (ie. circuit) as it is too precise a problem. I have a scan of the printer test if anyone can decipher from that. Too bad there wasn't a simple diagnostic hardware check that could be run, but oh well. I may be off to the store for another printer. I like the Canon ... was thinking of the IP5000 or the I960. Thoughts?

 | Re: canon s520 by Ben (12/11/04 10:52 PM) reply | + / - | I just started having the same problem with the Black not printing. I contacted Canon and they want me to take it to a service facilty. Of course they dont offer to pay for the service charge since it has gone out of warranty. I had given up on getting it fixed until today when I was visiting a friend and saw that he also had a s520 and he said his doesn't print black either. This is a serious defect that Canon has created. Maybe we should coordinate an effort to get Canon to make good on their product. Anyone interested?
|
 | Re: canon s520 by Michelle (12/12/04 8:52 AM) reply | + / - | I agree with you Ben--you'd think Canon would make some concession to the problems with this printer since there are so many disgruntled owners of the S520 out there. As I said in an earlier post, this printer was listed in Consumer Reports magazine in an article on printers as a "best buy"---WRONG!! I've had a similar experience with a bad compressor/design on a refrigerator a few years ago that was not long out of warranty and Whirlpool made it good when my repairman contacted them...the problem was so widespread and their reputation was at stake. What do you suggest we do?
|
 | Re: canon s520 by Ben (12/12/04 9:45 AM) reply | + / - | How many people are on this thread are still in need of repair of their printer?
|
 | Re: canon s520 by Raven Feathers (12/12/04 12:41 PM) reply | + / - | Hello Ben. I totally agree with you. Luckily, by crossing my fingers, I attempted to turn the printer on and hear the head move around. It did, no grinding. Then I attempted to print out some guitar tabs, just plain text and symbols, in black of course. Nothing printed, yet when I print color, it prints great. Photo printing does not work either, to get the black to work. I am low on black and cyan ink, but there is still enough for probably 40 pages of text. Any ideas?
|
 | Re: canon s520 by Dani (12/12/04 11:43 PM) reply | + / - | And yet another problem. After over a year of pretty good service I am now receiving a Status - error on every job without any explanation. This happens thru a print server or directly from three different PCs, so obviously the problem lies with the printer and not a driver or configuration one. Mechanically it looks and sounds fine. Any ideas?
|
 | Re: canon s520 by Bill (12/16/04 2:03 PM) reply | + / - | I have been having a similar problem. However, mine only occurs when I try to print something in Wordperfect. If I print an email, or something from a web page, it prints fine. When I try to print in Wordperfect, many of the letters are incomplete. It looks like only the top and bottom half of the letters print. I am puzzled!
|
 | Re: canon s520 by Wayne (12/16/04 2:32 PM) reply | + / - | I've gone back and forth w/ Canon and they finally gave me an exception code to get my printer fixed. Anyhow, the problem was the printer head. Apparently this will wear out in about 2 years with normal use (mine went early due to a defect, I guess) and then you simply have to replace it. Since it is so expensive, it's probably a better idea to buy a new printer with a head that comes with the ink cartridge (although that would probably increase the per page cost). I've got a new head now but I guess I'll be in the market for a different printer in a couple of years.

 | Re: canon s520 by Derek (12/16/04 6:37 PM) reply | + / - | I get no black ink when I use the "print head alignment or nozzle check" settings. When trying normal printing in Microsoft Word/Wordpad/Word Perfect, lines of text are cut off? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

 | Re: canon s520 by David (12/17/04 10:23 AM) reply | + / - | Just an update from one of the "satisfied" Canon customers... in my earlier post of 10-11-04, I suggested using paper other than "plain" to get black printing again. Like others have said in this thread, that is only the other 3 colors printing 100%. I knew this was the case with the early ink jet printers that made you put EITHER a color cartridge in or black cartridge in, but NOT both at the same time. But with the newer printers that let you have all colors in simultaneously, I don't understand why they don't use black ink for black??? The pictures seem much more bold using the "plain paper" setting that gives you black ink instead of the "black" created from the other 3 colors. Anyway... I digress. I performed the cleaning procedure that Bill described above (11-14-04) and now mine is printing black again. Off and on, it took 2 days of putting hot water in a bowl and letting the print head soak for a while and then gently dabbing the black ink away from the print head. Be careful NOT to rub the print head as that might damage the delicate nozzle openings. Once you stop getting black ink settling in the bowl and appearing on the paper towel, you know the clog is finally clear. I think I used almost a whole roll of paper towels. I hope this helps with anyone having problems printing black with the Canon S520. David

 | Re: canon s520 by Chuck (12/17/04 2:04 PM) reply | + / - | Just out of curiosity, how many people having problems with their s520 printheads are running aftermarket ink? I only ask this because we're an Authorized Service Provider for Canon, and our experience has been most printhead failures we see are related to using inferior quality aftermarket inks. You can save money this way, but if it damages your printhead, are you really saving money in the long run? In some cases, if you're printing lots of pages, and saving lots of money on the ink, if you have to pay for a printhead every 2 years or so you still may be coming out ahead. I'm not against aftermarket supplies, we sell remanufactured toner cartridges all the time, but my personal experience with refilled/remanufactured/aftermarket ink has not been very good in any machine.

 | Re: canon s520 by Mike (12/17/04 4:32 PM) reply | + / - | I am experiencing the same problem and have never run anything but Canon ink . My machine has little time on it and I just recently replaced the ink cartridges for the first time . The original black cartridge is 3/4 full . How much are print heads ? I have had lot's of good luck other Canon products I own , what's with this printer anyway . I am disappointed .

 | Canon s520 by Anonymous (12/18/04 12:51 AM) reply | + / - | My printer doesn't print black either, I tried cleaning and deep cleaning the head, taking the head out and wiping it, did about everything even bought a completely new printing head, none of them worked. Tried printing a photo paper all it does is print colour. Therefore I think my problem must be it must be the same as Keith Mason's, a problem with one of the chips inside the printer. Why the hell isn't there any tech support on canon's website about this issue.

 | Re: canon s520 by Leighton (12/18/04 6:57 AM) reply | + / - | I have a 520 and yes, it doesn't print black. I've tried everything. The last resort from the IT section at work is to remove the print head and immerse it in water for a few hours. We have canons at work. Same problem there. The IT department report a 50% success rate using this method.

 | Re: canon s520 by Mike (12/18/04 8:22 PM) reply | + / - | Leighton , You say that your printers at work also do not print black and they are Canon's . Are they the same model ? My newest issue of PC World has a write up on " Most Reliable " equipment, and Canon's are supposedly the most trouble free,( yea right),this according to the responses of some 42000 of their readers , rating their equipment . I do not think I will buy another Canon printer if the factory does not help me with this . This is definitely an inherent problem with this machine , and I wonder about their other models . I am disappointed to say the least . I have not owned this machine that long and to replace it so soon sucks , plus I just replaced the ink cartridges .What a waste ,I also based my purchase on this model because of positive write up's in various publications . I have become very wary now . Is there anywhere to go to get legitimate information regarding the testing and reliability of various equipment in order to make smart purchases . I feel like I have been had ..

My S520 is also not printing in black and I too purchased this after all the so called experts gave it a best buy rating . I can't make my mind up between tossing this , or sending it in to Canon for repair . Is it worth fixing ? Would a person be better off buying a new unit . Any ideas appreciated . I have already tried new drivers , cleaning the printer head and hooking it up to other computers , all with the same negative results . What a bummer . This thing has hardly been used , I can't believe it has quit .

 | Re: canon s520 by wayshwing (6/12/05 12:02 AM) reply | + / - | For ALL of you who replied to this thread, HERE is the fix!
I have had MANY Canon printers. Four to be exact. With each and everyone, the problem is the printhead itself.
After a few years, the space between the printhead face and the cartridges (inside the printhead itself) clog up with ink. This happens with ALL models of Canon printers.
With the S520, the black section of the head clogs up permanently over time.
For about $60US, you can find a replacement printhead for the S520. Model # is QY6-0034.
Ive done this for my other Canon printers with 100% success!
I love my Canon printers enough to fix them over replacing them!
I KNOW this will help you all out there!

After trying a bunch of stuff, I finally just turned off the printer, UNPLUGGED it for 5 sec, and plugged it back in. My guess is that there's a firmware bug which is fixed by a hard reset.

 | Re: canon s520 by zestinator (11/27/05 7:53 PM) reply | + / - | Wow.... my 2 year old S520 just quit printing black also! I did the usual stuff like reinstall the printer but still no black. I just tried getting into the Canon support site but wouldn't you guess it, they are experiencing high volume and apolgize for the inconvienience. Too much..... I'm going to take the print head off and give it a soak and a dab,see if that works, and I'll try to get in touch with Canon. If anyone has anyinfo if Canon has done anything about this i'd greatly appreciate it and i'll try to investigate too.

 | Re: canon s520 by Expert (12/2/05 4:28 AM) reply | + / - | Hello Guys. Many problems you all seem to experience. I thought, after long time oberserving this post, I would shed some light on the problems nearly all Canon Printer owners experience after about 1 or 2 years (in some cases after they have not used their printers for a long period of time).
Quite astonishing is the fact that most of these problems involve the Black print head, rarely the Colour print head. That is why your suggestions of printing on High Quality mode or otherwise Photo Quality mode fixes your short term problem of printing the colour black.
On a deeper level, the REAL problem lies within the print head component of your Canon Printer - especially the Black component. When this black print head is overused (or in some cases underused) it wears out. The only solution is the replace the print head which is quite costly for Canon printer. Those with knowledge of the printer market will know that buying a new printer may in some cases be more expensive that buying a new printer!
You find that it is mainly Canon Printers which experience this problem because they use a PERMANENT print head in there printers. That is why their ink cartridges are cheaper than their competitors, such as HP. Now with HP printers, they don't use permanent print heads at all. In fact, the reason why their ink cartidges are so expensive is because their ink cartridge has a built in print head - so every time your change the ink, you're changing the print head. Thats why you don't find this problem with HP printers.
I hope this helps you. Speaking with considerable knowledge of the Canon system and printer market, I hope you will all choose wiser next time your buy a printer.

 | Re: Re: canon s520 by Anonymous (1/11/06 4:29 AM) reply | + / - | I too am having problems with my S520 deciding not to print black. Was on the verge of spending money I really can't to see about having this fixed when I ran across these postings. Am willing to try what Bill did on 11/14/04. My question is: is it necessary to use distilled water? Thanks!

 | Re: canon s520 by matu155 (1/12/06 10:46 AM) reply | + / - | chalk another s520 user up with "the" black ink problem. i will try bill's 11/04 solution, too. i would think that boiling tap water would remove any impurities and that should be fine. however, i am going to go the distilled water route, because, at this point, i don't want to chance it. i'll keep you posted on the results.

 | Re: canon s520 by matu155 (1/13/06 10:29 AM) reply | + / - | i used the recommendation from bill to clean the printheads, but to no avail. i am getting no black ink at all on the test print. i repeated the cleaning procedure, but still no black ink. am i to assume that replacing the printhead is the only option?

 | Re: canon s520 by Greenman (1/14/06 1:19 PM) reply | + / - | Hi Lads and Lasses, Got a problem again, but looks worst. Started with a printer not printing yellow. Then started to get fadding and white lines. Unable to set up head alignment, wavy lines! Done all the normal stuff, alignment and head cleaning, also changed all the ink tanks. Done a complete reset. But still unable to get a clear aliment. Then, I guess with all the head cleaning got message that waste tank was almost full.[always happen when I use 'compatable' ink tanks] So, as done before done a compete strip down and clean. All done and cleaned, reprogrammed, tried the reset system, which has worked before, to remove 'full waste tank' setting, but will not work, still getting eight flashing lights and nothing working. What are my options?

 | Re: canon s520 by Esthra (6/8/06 1:46 AM) reply | + / - | hi everybody as happened to most of you my bjc-4550 suddenly won't print black, the printing motion and sounds are there, but only white paper would come out. yesterday i e-mailed a document to a friend who returned it to me after having worked on it - her os is mac where as i am working on windows xp. after having opened that document in order to print it, the printer just wouldn't print black anymore. it is curious that i tried to print the same document (after having got it from my friend's) the night before from another computer on an hp laser jet 6P and i wondered why only white pages came out. this is definitely not a printhead or cartridge problem. anybody got an answer?

 | Re: canon s520 by Anonymous (8/2/07 2:23 AM) reply | + / - | My Canon S520 has suddently started making black marks all over the left hand side of the page. As well as this, the printing is very faded. I was using generic printing ink but have just replaced it with canon ink again. However, the printing is still faded. Has this also happened to anyone? If so, what can I do?

 | Re: canon i560 by Speedtwin (9/3/08 9:21 PM) reply | + / - | I560 no black. Put print head under running hot water and kept shaking and rinsing for 10 to 15 min. paper towel dried, 1 full deep clean and works great now. Thanks

 | Re: canon s520 by Boog (11/21/08 2:50 PM) reply | + / - | Suddenly nothing but stripes in black. I recently installed a new scanner & I'm guessing I have a driver conflict. The only cure so far is to avoid plain paper setting, which I have used for 5 yrs. I tried color & greyscale and got nothing but stripes. When I run the nozzle check I only get half of the black pattern printed. Hey I can live with a 'photo paper' setting from now on if necessary.

 | Re: canon s520 by oskar (1/27/09 12:30 PM) reply | + / - | Ive got the fix for this. worked 100%
I took out the print head and had it just below hot watersurface. the same time I used toiletpaper on the top of the head, where the cartridge applies, and dried out every black fluid untill it only came wate on paper. then you know theres no black ink left. Then take some wet paper and clean the printer head, clean it the "head way" and not across. It should look like new after.
then install it and run the head alligent. no need for cleaning, it just flushes the head with massive fluid...
No yuou have a newprinter!
the printer head is removed with just lifting the grey pin over the cart ridge and then lift the plastic box out with the printer head.
good luck

 | Re: canon s520 by Anonymous (12/10/09 9:53 PM) reply | + / - | s520 printer refused to work after a power outage. Flashes alternately green and yellow 4 times, then repeats. Is it fixable or is it time to replace? Thanks
