Phaser 850 by Ann (8/16/04 8:24 AM) reply+1 + / -
I have a Tektronics Phaser 850. Of late, it has been feeding a sheet only halfway into the output tray. In other words, the paper feeds from the bottom tray, completely through the internal mechanism until it's headed out of the interior of the printer into the output tray. At the halfway mark, it stops and the printer says it's jammed. HELP! Surely this is something I can fix without the expense of a service call?

Re: Phaser 850 by marty5261 (8/16/04 9:25 AM) reply + / -
Ann, There can be a number of reasons this may be happening. What would be a big help is if you can go into the fault history and give me the error codes. The ones I am looking for will start with 22,xxx.xx.

Re: Phaser 850 by marty5261 (8/16/04 11:33 AM) reply + / -
Ann, based on the info you gave me I suspect the you may have a bad transfix solenoid assy. It may be sticking in up position causing the problems you describe. Another culprit could also be the dmc clutch but I would look at the transfix solenoid first. The p/n for it is 148030101 Xerox list price is $16.

Re: Phaser 850 by marty5261 (8/16/04 12:56 PM) reply + / -
Ann, another issue may be the transfix gear on the other side from the solenoid is broken. If teh key way is sheared off teh gear gets out of position causing the same jams you describe.

I'm having the same problems with an 850 DP. The print job goes all the way through the printer's internals and then on the way out to the exit tray it comes almost all the way out with the entire image printed but then stops and the printer lists it as a JAM. When I use the manual feed tray it works fine, but not when feeding from the internal paper tray.

HELP ANYONE!!

Re: Phaser 850 by skikaz (5/12/05 5:40 PM) reply + / -
It might be a bad spring on the lower exit guide paper path sensor. Open the exit cover, look in the middle and bit to the left. Find the black plastic piece sticking through the top plastic guide, thats the flag. Activate the flag, watching it to see if it oscillates too long. A lot of times all it needs is to shorten the spring. Not too hard a job, just dont make it too short. Cut about half the spring, reshape, reattach, then test. hope it works...

Re: Phaser 850 by youshineman (9/15/05 3:43 PM) reply + / -
Joe,

I am having a similar problem... If you can share if you were able to fix the problem... Did you follow skikaz's suggestion and did it solve your problem?

Actually my problem started when I leaned over the exit cover breaking one of the exit cover hinges (to my left one, and I saw there was a thin metal) and I taped the broken plastic hinge and it worked for a while...

When I tried to print avery labels, the label was not coming out well, and I glued the broken hinge for good this morning... Then, paper exits half way and stops there...seems like it's thinking if it should print both side... or not and then stops...

Yes, when I pull out the paper it was printed all right... When I open front cover and close, then it prints again doing the same when exiting the paper...

Any suggestion on how to fix this problem would greatly appreciated.

Re: Phaser 850 by skikaz (9/16/05 3:25 AM) reply + / -
if it's not the flag then it's probably the transfix soleniod. It might be sticking. You can place a tape on top of the soleniod to fix that. Lube the white cam while you're at it.

Good luck

Hey folks it most likely is the DMC clutch. Worked for Tektronix and Xerox servicing these printers and this was a chronic problem. They have a kit with a new clutch and a plastic widget to keep the clutch from slipping. Installation instructions are in the package. I don't recall the part number.
Part number for the original clutch was 401-0807-01 that should help their parts folks find the correct part number for the kit. The full name is the Drum Maintenence Clutch

That message is telling you to use the diagnostics mode to locate a blocked sensor. In other words that piece may be from a sensor flag or part of the sensor which is reporting that message.

We have a 850 out of warranty. It has died, error message is 22,500,00:161030. We have engineers on our staff, they have examined the printer carefully, with focus on the front door. Is there a sensor we are not seeing?

The maintainance kit roller was causing skid-marks on the output so we bought one and replaced the maintainance tray. The problem occurred shortly after we did this.

Any last gasp suggestions?

We did switch to a generic ink. But had no apparent trouble.

We like the capabilities of this printer. We are at the stage of A) Buy rpr by the hour, B) buy a used 850.

TIA for any help.

Rip

Re: Phaser 850 by Xerox Tech (12/14/05 6:17 PM) reply + / -
it could be:

“Jam – Open front cover” messages where a 22,500.00 fault is reported in the fault history may
indicate a problem with the Top Half, Upper Feed Assembly (P/N 351-1106-00)

I would try and replace that first.

Re: Re: Phaser 850 by Rip (12/15/05 7:14 AM) reply + / -
OK, thanks, we can consider that.

Can anybody get a little more specific as to what the problem in the Top Half, Upper Feed Assembly might be? What and where is the sensor that triggers that error code?

Second, sources for parts? Suggestions?

Been looking on e-bay and seem to be able to get machines with mixed pedigrees for $100-$200 + shipping. Get one and strip for part?

Thanks,
Rip

Re: Phaser 850 by jdwvw (12/15/05 7:19 PM) reply + / -
The top half upper feed asm is what I would call a registration sensor asm. It is located behind the front door and below/behind the big crome heat shield.

For parts call your local Xerox ASP/SDP.

OK. We are making progress.

A sensor is broken on the board marked "Media Right p/n 389-2459-00"

Will seek a quote for a replacement from a Xerox source.

Thanks to all - this forum is excellent!

Re: Phaser 850 - Update by Rip (12/16/05 9:35 AM) reply + / -
Actually it appears there are two sensors broken of the four on the board. They are designated U210 and U240 on the board. The sensors consist of a "u" mount (black) and a pivoting flag-like piece (grey/putty color)in the mount. Two of the gray pieces have been broken. The mounts are surface solidered to the board.

Plugging in 389-2459-00 on the Xerox automated phone part line service gets a "no such p/n" response. Our 850 was manufactured in 2001, so it would appear this board has maybe been replaced by p/n 351-1106-00 and this p/n now includes components that are more than just the circuit board. Also of interest is that requesting info on 351-1106-00 also returns a "no such p/n" response.

The drawing of the board in the 351-1106-00 that is shown on the Illustrated Part Breakout available on-line for the printer shows a different physical layout of the sensors than on our board. We wonder if this is artistic license or actual physical configuration? We can e-mail you some pictures if requested.

I fear we are being caught by manufacturing obsolence. Anybody got any of the mounts/flags around? We can do surface mount repair here.

(This is ALMOST an OCB problem!)

Rip

tdata2004: You're probably going to have to buy the whole assembly. It comes as one unit, with one pn. (351-1106-00) Xerox.com has a search utility to find a asp/reseller near you, otherwise you may be able to talk Xerox into sending you one over the phone.

13,004.43

Left jet stack heater is not heating. Make sure the printer has proper air ventilation, and isn't near any A/C ducts. If the wiring is all intact and properly placed, replace the printhead. (Read: Buy a new printer)

09,101.46

Not listed in my service manual. Are you sure you typed it correctly, and does it appear in the Error Log with any other error codes?

Re: Phaser 850 by hakamaka (3/20/06 3:13 AM) reply + / -
09,101.46 is the same as 9,008.43 and means:
Black ink melter heater is on but no ink seems to drip into the print head ink reservoir - stucked ink stick or heater defektiv, check all wiring to the ink loader by pull and reconnecting

I just got two 850dps. One looks like it had a meltdown with caked toner all over the insides. What can I part out and be reasonably sure works? The other starts up fine but every sheet jams in front of the maintence tray. Do i just need a new maintence kit or tray? parts from the other one or just some tlc and know how? Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Phaser 850 by wlulham (4/3/06 6:20 AM) reply + / -
As to the first one, these printers don't use toner (they're not a laser printer); they use a type of solid ink similar to wax. If you can clean off all the spilt ink, it may be salvagable. It sounds like someone moved the printer before it cooled down. If you can disassemble most of the insides, such as the drum heater, paper feed assembly, etc., and clean off the ink, it may be fine.

On the second one, what's the error log? The jam could be a lot of things, but I'd check and make sure the sensor flags on the paper feed assembly are still there.

Re: Phaser 850 by jdwvw (4/3/06 7:47 PM) reply + / -
1.)Take a can of air and turn it upside down so it sprays frozen air and spray the spilled ink. It will make it brittle and easy to break up. You can get the bulk of it up this way. Then try using a hair drier and some paper towels to clean it up.

(Besure to check the gears on the left side. Sometimes the ink will cake up in some of the teeth as well.)

2.)Does the paper make it up to the sensors above the maint tray?

I have a 8200DP that i have been working franticly on. First an error came up, after much research i found the bulbs needed replacing. So i did that, and to my amazment was able to put the printer back together with no extra pieces left over. But now however the printer jams at the upper feed roller. It doesnt jam, it just doesnt go through the feed rollers. I think something is keeping those rollers from doing thier job. This was not a problem before we took it apart. But if i try to manually feed it will not pull from the bottom tray, telling me the sensor is still working. Any ideas??

In addition to the above post, I came home a few minutes ago having left the printer running all day with the earlier error. The error number has now changed to 22,506.06:99477

This may assist to shed some light on the problem.

Re: Phaser 850 by dmzcompute (4/18/06 5:18 AM) reply + / -
Drum home sensor error. for the first error. Remove the left side cover and there is big a round item with a clear plastic cover over it. The cover easily pops off. Blow out any dust and dirt especially on the brown disk and sensor it goes thru at the bottom of the item. Try power on again and see what happens. he other errors has to do with picking up paper, perhaps an error when it tried to pickup a cleaning page sheet.

Our school has two Tektronics 850s DP and N. My problems are:
All of the sudden the print on the DP has changed from black to violet. I have tried printing from several computers set on different settings. I even checked to see if a student switched out the cubed wax ink. I am stumped on this one.
Also, the 850n's A drawer is jammed. I tried unplugging the printer b/c I understand that there is an internal latching system. However, nothing I try works. I need to change out the maintenance kit. If anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated.
Both of these printers have been notorious for paper jamming. They are heavily used by students and teachers.

Re: Phaser 850 by wlulham (6/5/06 6:14 AM) reply + / -
techlady:

On the DP model, try printing the internal test prints to verify whether it's the printer or the drivers. If the printer prints fine, then blow away the drivers on the PCs and reinstall fresh ones from Xerox's web site.

On the N model, if you turn off the printer, then take off the right side cover (looking at the front of the case), you'll see a gear belt that runs vertical with a hose nozzle attached to it. If you manually spin the gear all the way down, you'll see the hose move to the bottom. About an inch from the bottom of its path of travel, you'll hear/feel a slight click as the latch disengages. At that point, you should be able to slide it out.

When my printer (Phaser 850 DP) boots up it goes through about 90% of the warm up process then gives a warning that an ink stick is jammed.

I then open the cover and check for any jams, but there are none.

The printer then goes through about 3-4% more of the warm up then it spits back an error code stating:

Contact service report fault:
09.069.41.79068

Any idea what that problem is and how it can be fixed? Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Phaser 850 by wlulham (6/12/06 2:53 PM) reply + / -
In a nutshell: The Magenta-ink melter is turned on, but there seems to be no ink dripping.

It then reports an ink jam 3 times before giving that particular fault.

Recommended replacements are to replace the ink loader, and then the power supply.

(After reading a service note):

Check the F3 fuse with a voltometer. If the fuse is blown, it may be due to a shorted cap/wipe/purge assembly. You shouldn't have to replace the ink loader in this case.

If the fuse isn't blown, just replace the ink loader.

Re: Phaser 850 by dmzcompute (6/12/06 2:54 PM) reply + / -
Turn the printer off and remove the megenta ink sticks to include the one partically melted and then put back in with the partically melted one in the back and see if there is a change.

Hi,

I think I have kind of the same problem with my Phaser. It warms up correctly and says it is ready to go. I cannot get any prints with black on them. The ink is simply not melted down, I switched the used stick that was all the way in for printing with a new stick, after shutting down, restarting the printer (going through cleaning cycle and everything) and printing a complete black page the new stick remains new.

Is this a problem with the ink loader? Is it easy to buy and replace?

BTW, I am using original ink, not third party.

Thanks for any help

Ah, I noticed at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/10395 that the last number is just a page count. Apparently 13.004.43 means "The left jet stack heater is not heating at all, or is heating too slowly."

The other page also says:

"Ensure the printer is not located next to an air conditioning duct. Check that the printhead-to-drum gap is not to close (the drum can act as a heatsink). Inspect the printer wiring. Replace the print head. The print head is over $1,000."

Printer is pulling paper through at an angle and bending top left corner of paper. Prior to this had a number of paper jams and there was shredded paper that was removed. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Marcia

Re: Phaser 850 by theprinterfixer (11/14/07 5:53 PM) reply + / -
You may have a piece of torn paper stuck in the drum heater. See if you can manually push some heavy paper or card stock through the printer to dislodge it.

Thanks. I tried your suggestion but am still having the same problem. Hope I don't have to call a tech for repairs. Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Marcia

Re: Phaser 850 by theprinterfixer (11/19/07 10:28 AM) reply + / -
If you feed a sheet of paper through the front feeder does it still jam or bend the corner?. If it does you will probably need a new upper feed assembly.

Re: Phaser 850 by marciae (11/19/07 10:40 AM) reply + / -
Yes, it still bends the corner when I feed it through the front feeder. Is replacing the upper feed assembly something that I could do fairly easily myself, or do I need a technician?
Thanks,
Marcia

Re: Phaser 850 by theprinterfixer (11/19/07 10:45 AM) reply + / -
If you can get an upper feed assembly it is not too difficult to change. If you are going to do this yoursely you may want to pull the old one out first before you order a new one just in case you have a piece of torn paper causing your problem.

Thank you so much for your help. I will try to pull the old assembly tomorrow to see if I can find any torn paper.

Dear Folks:
You are amazing!
My Phaser 850 is displaying Error#15.004.45.17502.
This printer is about 8,000 prints on it total. Can you tell me what this error code means and how to go about fixing the error code.
Thanks in advance, Best, Walter

Help! My printer was printing just fine and then stopped in the middle of a 50 page job. The printer error code is 09,037.45:94482. Can anyone tell me what the problem is and if I can fix it myself?

Thank you!

My phaser 850 used to do a magnificent job of printing until the yellow ran low....I bought some from Printer Smith on ebay and it does not look like the original techtronic packaging.......
The sheets on the test pages are dull and missing sections of stripes... could I have damaged the drum or printhead when changing the maintenance tray?...suggestions?

Thank You/// David and Carol, Memphis

It was the yellow ink stick--thank goodness, and I'm up and running again. You are the best! Thank you so much.

I've got a Phaser 860 that we haven't used very much at all. it's telling me to replace the MX kit, but I know it hasn't been used enough to need changing. Is there anyway to override this? is it based on date or # of pages printed before needing to be changed? thanks...

Re: Phaser 850 Maintenance Kit by Geoffrey99 (12/22/07 8:24 AM) reply + / -
Hello all

have the exact same problem as labpup with the maintenance kit being almost new and just 1-2 month over the 2 years period with less than 1500 prints. Service sheet printing is flawless and I am not really interested in spending money on a new maintenance kit (just want to keep the printer as long as to use up all my ink).

So is there a possibility to override the counter? Guess there must be someone having found a solution on this one already?

Thanks for you help!

Geoff

Re: Phaser 850 by hakamaka (12/25/07 7:12 AM) reply + / -
@labpub and geoffey99

You can simply ignore the message telling you to change the MX-Kit, the printer prints until all 10.000 or 30.000 prints that the kit lasts will be printed. The only odd is you have to push a button to see the printer stat screen, since the the message in the display will show up until you changed the kit.

My rapid release guide broke and some pieces fell into the machine. I thought I got them all, but when I do a diagnostics, it has lite stripes, I do the fix and it gets better and then after printing a few times they return. I am looking for this part to replace the guide but does anyone have any other suggestions if it's more than just that?

13:004.43 error Is there really no fixing the left jet stack heater fault by any means? TIA. Mike

Re: Phaser 850 by dmzcompute (6/4/08 5:20 AM) reply + / -
The only way is to replace the printhead. Since it cost more than the printer is worth, just buy a new later model.

Re: Phaser 850 by monijn (6/4/08 5:41 AM) reply + / -
Bout had it with this printer. Got a white streak running up the middle of the page and the ink won't stick around the edges of the paper. I've performed the cleaning function about 29 times and the white streak is still there. I do notice a lot of ink flakes coming out with the paper as well. Am I wasting my time trying to fix this printer or should I put it on the curb?

Re: Phaser 850 by wpc (6/4/08 8:04 AM) reply + / -
Run the light stripes test. If you have missing jets then run the light stripes test 3 times. If you still have missing jets after 3 cleans then turn the printer off and leave it off for 24 hours. If after turning it back on you still have missing stripes then you have a bad printhead. I would throw the printer away at this point because of the excessive cost of the printhead.

You mentioned ink "flacking off" .....this could be caused by the media or you have a bad maintenance roller

Heck, I can not even figure out how to take the side covers off to look inside.... Have the Service Manual, but nothing in it describes just how to do this basic operation. Any help please? TIA.

AND, thank you dmz for your reply earlier.

850 DP. Not currently mine... Paper Jam error and no paper found in any part of the path? Also, what if print head error 13:004.43 then about 1000 prints later the paper jam message. Would this mean that the print head issue has been repaired and or rectified but can not prove this since paper jam error refuses to clear.... TIA

Re: Phaser 850 by Anonymous (6/5/08 1:42 PM) reply + / -
Err. The jam is a 22.500.00 error code.

Just a note to let all the group know that iTezen did indeed repair my Phaser 850DX printer and it is still working! Tech was delayed but hung in there until it worked. I am pleased. Also, told the sales guy that he should reply to those interested parties so that they know he/she is in a queue somewhere. Certainly worth the $159 to me. Thank you for getting me back up!

Are you the same person from the BEWARE of PRINTER REPAIR GUYS !!! it's a scam posting. For those who are confused here is the other forum
http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/55380

Is that you? I think it's you. Listen this is not the place to gripe about Itezen. You seem to be a wakjob to me. People are here trying to get their printers fixed. According to your own postings you refused to wait to get your printer fixed and went wakkkko.

I noticed Itezen no longer post here. They helped me get my printer fixed from their postings and I have had them repair my 3 printers over the past few years. By the way I got a backup to avoid the idiotic situation you got yourself into and now blame them for. It's the intelligent thing to do.

I would rather see you go than itezen. Bring them back and get rid of this wakkjob please. This is not the place for your gripes. How many people have you helped? How many printers have you help fix with your griping? They fix printers they belong here you belong in a nuthouse.

Why doesn't itezen respond to this idiot? I noticed they just vanished off the site. Their posting were always right on the money. Whats going on? They belong here this wackko needs to go! Who is with me?

Re: Phaser 850 by MichaelTech (3/2/09 12:24 PM) reply + / -
This is you're basic drum heater error. The lamps may have blown.
At start-up, look through the hole for the heater cable, and see if both lamps light. The contacts may be burned off.
Also: slide a piece of thick paper under the sensor at the left of the drum, it may be dirty, giving an error.

DRUM HEATER-Phaser 850 by TONER9001 (3/2/09 4:07 PM) reply + / -
Folks: These drum heaters can be a bear. Yes, they are only the approx. 5 inch long halogen lamps found in most standing halogen floor up-shining lamps with replacement lamps available at CVS drug store for a couple bucks vs. the $5 others request as though you are buying some exotic part. The problem as MichaelTech mentions is the contacts may have burned off, a fairly common event. I repaired one of mine by mechanically attaching an additional, properly bent to hold the heater lamp in the correct orientation copper end-of-lamp- holder contact to the one in place using a very fine machine screw. This secured through a 1 mm hole fashioned (with difficulty, ergo the comment to replace the whole damn thing) in the copper contact soldered to the heater board. I considered replacing the old contact and decided that desoldering it from the heater board, fashioning a new correctly formed contact and re-soldering it in place and expecting it to function given the small tolerances and high heat present was a task NOT worth my sanity and best left to one more skilled and saavy than I. Please permit me to suggest that you'd be better off finding another old 850 and robbing the drum heater off of the sacrificial printer. A good source is a local university computer "grave yard". I keep two 850s on the shelf to serve as parts sources for my work horse...so far it has worked. Amen.

I'll keep it short and simple. It does look like they updated the heater assembly and raised the price drastically last year.650-4155-01 is the old part number and you can find online for around 50 to 60 dollars the new part number is 650-4155-02 and is selling for around 150 to 200 Im guessing becuase its becoming harder to come by and production has slowed down.

Re: Phaser 850 transfix gear solenoid relay by John2009 (3/30/09 10:24 AM) reply + / -
One can remove and replace a black buffer tape (reduce pinging noise) on top of the solenoid relay due to its (glueyness) aging. Also the soft solenoid metal tends to magnetized itself, and do have some residual magnet effects even without a current through it; which causes a sluggish disengagement time and let transfix gear slip through. One way to fix this problem is to reverse the polarity of the solenoid by pulling and switch red and black wires from its terminal V I have successful did it.

Re: Re: Phaser 850 by Redpackman (6/26/09 12:03 PM) reply + / -
i did the same thing when I replaced the bulb in mine. There is a little flag that you likely broke off in an assembly you had to remove to get the bulb heater housing out. There are two flags in that assembly. You can probably see one and think it's fine, but there's a second one, and unless that's intact you get the symptoms you are experiencing. After three years, however, you've probably either solved it or given up.

machine keeps telling me to close cover to continue, however cover is closed, is there anything I can do besides call for repair Help

Re: Phaser 850 by moe (8/10/09 2:29 PM) reply + / -
Probably a bad door switch. If you look closely, while closing the door, you should be able to see a plastic protrusion actuating the switch. Of course, the plastic could have broken off as well, and there's nothing to push on the switch.

Phaser 850 - no cyan by Robert Hayden (11/19/09 3:33 PM) reply + / -
My 850 recently expired and I purchased another 'second hand' unit. It works exceptionally well apart from one issue. The previous owner obviously used a non standard wax in the blue (cyan) section and must have clogged it up a bit. I have so far put five coloured blocks (all colours) through the 'eliminate light stripes' area and still cant get it to print cyan. Even when I try to print a solid A4 page of cyan I get approximately 10mm wide of cyan coverage, a couple of light stripes and the rest of the page gets no coverage.

Is there any way to fully flush the cyan 'tubes' or should I locate the clogged component and take this from my old printer and replace it.

It would be great to be pointed in the right direction. Thank you.
