I am having scanner failure on hp d135 any fix for it.

Re: scanner failure on hp d135 by Theodore (6/8/04 6:03 AM) reply + / -
I have the same problem. Actually, I don't know how to fix it with a program. What I figured out: if you turn it off and unplug completely. After 5-10 minutes you can use scanner. Once you start printing again scanning function crashes again.

Did you get any reasonable feedback? Share pls.

Hi,

I also have the same problem. I am running Windows XP. I have gone online several times with HP for technical support. I have my printer plugged in to it's own outlet. I have tried a semi-full reset by doing #,6 and I have tried a partial reset by doing #,3. I have also recycled the power. Nothing I have tried works. I have tried to update my driver, but I have the latest update available. The scanner light bulb lights up just fine. I have also unistalled and reinstalled my HP software. If anyone finds a solution please share before I toss this printer out my window.

Re: scanner failure on hp d135 by Cathy (6/18/04 12:40 AM) reply + / -
Every time I need to use the D135, I have a hair dryer blowing hot hair into the chamber and outside all around the unit as well. Then I wrap a thick blanket over it and wait 5 to 10 minutes.

The "Scanner Failure, Turn power off and on" error message disappears, then it works fine. It could be that the temperature in my house is too low for the components of this particular unit.

I hope this warm-up works for your D135s. Good Luck.

I've had it with HP!!!!!! The d135 is a good machine and the consumer should not be expected to toss it after 2 years because of a "no fix" for the scanner failure message. Is there an actual fix according to HP? Or has anyone else resolved the problem them selves. Steve

I'm having the same "scanner failure" error on the d135, brought it to the shop, was told they couldn't repair it. He couldn't get a replacement part.( whatever he needed I don't know ) . I still can use it, but I have to reset ( turn off and on ) the printer several times a day.
Is it possible to override the scanner option so I can use the d135 only as network printer ?? Any ideas or suggestions?

I too am having the "Scanner Failure" Message, and it's always when I have alot of work to do !! I keep turning the power on and off, sometimes that helps, sometimes it doesn't.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Discouraged in Louisiana

Just got offline with another HP tech - this is what he had me do....

1. Verify that the unit is switched on. Unplug the all-in-one from power and disconnect the connection port(USB cable).
2. Wait 30 seconds.
3. Plug in the power only.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 two more times.
5. On the third time after plugging the unit into power, reconnect the connection port from the all-in-one to your computer.

worked for about 3 minutes - no scanner failure message - then it popped up again! Some of you may want to try instructions above - may work for you - meanwhile - I am going to try & clean all the scanning glass/mirrors/etc as someone told me this may help. The final word from HP was I could get a 15% discount on a new unit or buy a refurbished unit at a 'greatly discounted price'! HA! As if I'll buy another HP product after having this $500 printer for 3 years WITH an extended warranty that expired 7/28/05!!! Will let everyone know if cleaning helps....hope it does!

Re: scanner failure on hp d135 by BBQFritos (11/5/05 8:12 PM) reply + / -
Oh well - cleaning under the scanner glass and the white sensor strip under the glass (NOT an easy job by the way!!) did absolutely nothing. I know that HP just settled a class action lawsuit because they didn't give out restoration CDs with their computers...now they have to give them to consumers for free - maybe we should all think about some kind of action agaist them for these crappy units we are all having problems with! If it could be fixed - that wouldn't be SO bad - but they are telling me to toss it!! This just isn't right!

Re: scanner failure on hp d135 by Robert Miller (11/13/05 7:13 AM) reply + / -
If I didn't have the same issue with the scanner failure, I could recommend this unit to anyone for home office use. I can't understand why HP cannot stand behind there product. This is WRONG!

If you have a chance to buy a D135......DON'T

Re: scanner failure on hp d135 by BBQFritos (11/13/05 10:30 AM) reply + / -
Found out that if I leave the unit unplugged while not using, it will copy just fine if plug in & use to make copy only. Of course after being plugged in for awhile the message comes back. So for now, I am leaving unplugged and when I want to make a copy, plug it in, make the copy, turn it off & unplug again. Stupid procedure to have to go through - but it works....so it's not that the whole unit is crap...HP should be able to fix this minor issue but they'd rather sell me something else to get more of my $$$...well DELL will get my money from now on. Dell has a multi-task unit like this on sale for $189 and I haven't heard about them having all these mechanical problems combined with the lousy tech support! So my advice to others with this issue...try the 'unplugged' route and if you either don't want to do that or get tired of doing it....BUY DELL!

Re: scanner failure on hp d135 by dougcoleman (12/18/05 5:26 PM) reply + / -
I also have a d135 with the frequent, actually constant, scanner failure message. Like others, the bulb lights fine, and I can use a functions of the unit. If you call for a scan from "Director", you don't even have to shut and restart the unit, usually. This also clears the error message for a while.
Here is what I have done, with some success.
I note that hp is all over the issue of not having the unit plugged into anything other than a wall outlet, not a power strip, etc. I also noticed that my power supply had a very loose connector where the 110 volts enters the supply (the 31.5 volt line out is hard mounted). I asked if they thought that this might account for my trouble. Of course they offered no concrete answer, but offered to sell me a power supply. I asked them to give it to me, and after going up the heirarchy of hp chat, I finally struck out. I found a brand new supply on EBay for $8.50 (compared to the 40 or so dollars hp wanted).
I thought I had solved my problems, as I had no scanner errors for 12 hours or so, and the unit went into power save mode, something it never had time to do anymore given the scanner errors. Only problem was it wouldn't wake up from power save mode. Then, after waking it up by pressing cancel on the panel, it printed fine, but I then had the scanner failure message within a few minutes. Then, in trying to solve this problem, (power save) I noted in a hp knowledge base article that Dell laptops (at least Inspiron and Latitude) suffer from low USB power levels, and that that could cause a myriad of errors, including not waking from sleep, scanner errors, etc. Well, you woiuld think in the thirty or so sessions I have had with "chat" that this would have been raised? Do you think this issue would have indexed to the person who searched "scanner error"??? I told them on all occasions that I had a Dell Inspiron, but no, it seems that their script and flowchart didn't specifically spell out that combo.
The KB article suggests to purchase a powered USB hub as a solution. I am now installing this and power cycling, partial resetting, etc. It's great having an unpaid part time job with hp, isn't it?

Re: Re: scanner failure on hp d135 by Anonymous (12/18/05 6:23 PM) reply + / -
An update: @#&$$$^%$@%$#$&%!!!!!
I did a full reset, (#,9) after going through all of the other BS (#6,#3) suggestions from hp. This reset the total page count to zero (I didn't know I had printed over 10,000 pages since December, 2002). So far, since then (about 20 minutes), no scanner error. I'll take the small victories where ever I can find them.
One thing I have wondered is if noise on the phone line could be contributory. I find that the errors don't occur as much if there is no phone line connected to the printer. An inconvienience to be sure when needing to fax, but that is what the d series printers are all about, heh?

Re: scanner failure on hp d135 by dougcoleman (12/18/05 8:25 PM) reply + / -
Okay, so I went for one more trip to the joke called online chat at hp. I explained to "Shawn" how the unit functioned fine when run from Director, in spite of the error message. He told me to try a color scan, and if that worked okay, it would indicate the hardware was okay. Fine, I said, and as I did that, I asked if that meant a software issue, which I have long suspected. Yes, yes, it could be a software issue....just not "our" software.
Okay, so less than two minutes later, after successfully making a color copy, and a scan for that matter, and in obvious contradiction of his comments of 2 minutes earlier, where he said a good color scan would mean no harware issues, "Shawn" tells me that this a combination of a hardware and software problem. How could that be, I said? You just told me that the color copy meant no hardware trouble?
There are two idiots here. Not Shawn...he is sitting somewhere thousands of miles away I suspect asembling phrases from a list to construct his replies. The idiots on hp's side of this is management, if they think that this type of quality and product support will keep customers buying hp. And the other idiots are us, for continuing to think that this hardware can keep getting cheaper and cheaper and maintain any kind of quality.

Any fix for the dx135 "scanner failure" error yet?

Re: scanner failure on hp d135 by Anonymous (7/26/06 8:20 AM) reply + / -
you need to replace the scanner ccfl (cold cathode florescent lamp) on the scanner very VERY delicate assembly have changed 10 or 15 of them never got a call back yet the come from digi-key .com and are produced by jkl the part # is bf26240-24b (jkl#) or 289-1055-nd (digi-key part#) 2.6 mm X 240 mm as far as i know models are in-discrimanint as this is an industrial supply catalog and most likely where hp gets them from anyway .... you must CAREFULLY remove the top of the scanner un plug the white wire from the inverter on the scanner slide back the silicone covers from the glass use a silicone spray for a lubericant cut the wirs as close to the crimp connector as possible strip and tin the wires cut down and tin the terminals on the new lamp and CAREFULLY re solder them and re lube th ewire and slide the insulator back over the glass very improtant as the start voltage for these lamps is about 1300 volts and will arc otherwise reassemble scanner re rote wires clean white strip on glass do not power up without glass in place white strip is for calibration ...... if the ends of your lamp are black light output is to low for proper calibration and you get the scanner error message all the pluging and un plugging and driver/software uogrades in the world will not fix it you need to replace the lamp ....

Calm down chaps!
I repair these things everyday, in fact had one yesterday with "scanner failure" Cleaning under the scanner glass & the reference strip is not enough. You also need to clean the mirrors of the scanner. All this is not easy but if you do it properly your problem will go away! The mirrors may not even look dirty but they get a film on them which is enough to cause the error.
Good Luck!

I have use #9 press it at the same like 6 seconds while power is turning on (initialising mode) then I press cancel and it never ever came up again this annoying scanner failure! I never clean this printer anyway which was used for 2 1/2 years. The problem came up for the past 1 year. So I guess the glass mirror has nothing to do with it as well.

Re: scanner failure on hp d135 by Anon87988797 (12/10/06 1:45 PM) reply + / -
Hey guys. I am a printer technician. I do contract work from hp sometimes. I was just trained for the repair of these units. I have to say, I know these are a pain in the butt, and even tricker to work on. I found out that the "scanner failure" can be caused by a number of things. The methods that have been tried above will work for a certain percentage of people however for those that are unsuccessful, it may mean a couple things:
1. the high voltage power supply may be bad. (including a relay that will cause the clicking sounds as some of you have mentioned)
2. the scanner bulb may be burned out.
3. any number of the sensors inside this unit could be bad.

For those of you who don't have the patience to deal with these constant replacement printers that you are buying every two years, I can only reccomend one thing:
Buy a PROVEN model that has been around for a very long time! i.e. HP 4150's 4350's whatever...
As a technician, I see these all the time, but they are easy to work on, and easy to diagnose. you can find any part on e-bay for these!

Re: scanner failure on hp d135 by magnaray (12/11/06 9:39 PM) reply + / -
I tried all the hocus-pocus, plug, unplug, plug, push #9, stand on your head and spin tricks posted here and elsewhere. Finally, I carefully disassembled the unit down to the mirror stip mounted under the light. The mirror was noticeably dirty with a film that must have collected over time. The mirror is delicate and hard to remove. This entire task took about 2-3 hours and isn't for the faint at heart but it worked, for now anyway.

I sold the HP piece of junk on eBay for about $10 and bought a Canon Copier, Printer, Scanner for about $60 (after rebates) and a Brother stand-alone fax (about $20 after rebates). BEEN HAPPY EVER SINCE! Get rid of the HP garbage!! I will NEVER buy their products again.

Thanks for your posting last summer on regarding the scanner failure mesage on the HP d135. The only question I had was how do you get to the mirrors to clean them. Obvioulsy the glass was easy.

Thanks

It seems an awful lot of us have the same scanner problem on the hp officejet d135. "scanner error" turn off then on again. Online chat usually only tells you how to do the reset procedure either using the #3 key or the #6 key. None of their technical advice cured the problem. They did tell me I could use their upgrade option which was to buy another machine @$500.00. If anyone knows how to repair the scanner problem, please email me at jernegan@comcast.net. Thanks!

I did the complete clean a year ago and it lasted one day. I ordered a new bulb, but didn't remember there are two, if I change one is there a preference as to which one to change? Niether look bad...black on ends, but the plastic piece on the front end of the lamps is discolored. Could that be the cause, and if so can it be chemically cleaned? I did a good clean today with no result.

Re: scanner failure on hp d135 by Bert (10/17/07 6:37 PM) reply + / -
Clean the scanner head and glass

Removing the scanner glass

General
The Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) will need to be removed before the glass can be removed. You will also need a T10 Torx head driver approximately 6" long. Driver handles that accept removable bits may be too large in diameter for this particular job.

Removing the automatic document Feeder (ADF)
1. Hinge the ADF upward as if you are going to manually scan a document.
2. In the hinge area there is two black pull latches. Pull them up and lift the ADF straight up to remove it. Some side-to-side rocking may be necessary before it will disengage.

Removing the Scanner Glass
1. Remove the four T10 Torx head screws around the perimeter of glass, i.e. two in the ADF hinge area and one on the right and left.
2. Remove the Control Panel overlay. It pries off.
3. Open the printer as if you are going to access the cartridges and disengage the support legs. Two latches at the base of each leg must be pried outward with a slot style screwdriver to disconnect them. The scanner assembly will now "flop" freely, so steady it while removing the four screws on the underside.

Note: The screw in the front is hidden under the piece that you grasp to gain cartridge access. Two latches must be released to remove it. The screw can now be seen using a flashlight but may be obscured by some wires.

Clean the underside of the glass, giving particular attention to the white strip. Then clean the scanner bulb (gently, its thin glass) and the mirror(s) with a cotton swab sparingly moistened with Windex or a similar cleaner.

Sell/trash the piece of junk and buy a cheap scanner/copier/printer and stand-alone fax. That is what I did and I am SO happy! And will NEVER buy HP products AGAIN!
:)

Re: Re: scanner failure on hp d135 by Anonymous (12/23/07 10:11 AM) reply + / -
Bert,
I am not very handy but I am somewhat intuitive. Your instructions were very good to me! Thanks!

I took apart the scanner assembly and followed your easy instructions.

Her are some added tips for the unintuitive:

To disengage the support legs you must pry with a small flat head screwdriver. Pry back the female end tabs while pulling up on the support legs this can be tricky...try not to break the tabs.

To see the hidden screw...you will need to pull out one of the two latches(small grey round tube) from its square host(it looks like one piece but it is not) in order to remove the cartridge door handle. To get to the screw you will need a very narrow screwdriver. I did not have one so I used an eyeglass screwdriver. Putting the screw back was fun. I had to set up a standing tripod flashlight, put the screw on the end of the NON magnetic eyeglass screwdriver, dodge the wires and go for the hole....yeeeehah!.....made it on my first try.

I did not see the bulbs, there are two but they were so skinny.
The mirror was deep inside the bulb assembly so obviously a q-tip was ideal. After gently cleaning, I hit the whole area with compressed dust remover..in fact, I hit everywhere in the printer I could see electronics. It contained some kind of alcohol
I think and evaporated fast. It was made for electronics.

Bottom line....the copy function worked for 2 copies and then went back into the scanner failure mode. I did notice one of the two bulbs was dimmer than the other and had some pitting on the glass tube. Maybe I need to replace the bulbs.
Any advice?

Thanks again,
Terry

Re: Re: Re: scanner failure on hp d135 by Anonymous (2/16/08 7:09 AM) reply + / -
A simple answer to your question is that you can use your printer as a network printer even while displaying the "scanner failure..." message. I, as with the previous posts, am experiencing continuous "scanner failure" issues to the point where all I use this printer for is as a network printer - while the LCD display continues to display "scanner failure, turn power off, then on again". Every once in a while I can get it to work - althnough these instances are becoming more rare. Hopefully I, and everyone else experiencing this problem, will find a post that will remedy this problem. It's a shame that HP doesn't come up with a solution. This problem with the d135 is not exactly a secret.

I have another issue here. My display on my d135 is stuck in copy mode. No matter what i do, it says (1 copy / 100 %). I tried resetting it with #,3-6-9 but still nothing. As I press menu button, it only have copy options. Please help if you can, since I am not able to fax or anything, as i press in the fax numbers, it only changes the cuantities to copy. I can print and all that just fine...
Thanks in advance.

In general, our HP d135 is showing its age, including need to turn it off and on frequently for problem above and others. Time to get a new color AIO for home-office use - looking for something that's similar to the HP d135 but that works - sturdy document feeder, glass big enough to do legal-sized, not crazy on ink consumption, etc. Can be HP or other. What are your recommendations? Thanks.

Can anyone tell me where the relay is and how to replace it? And when you say high voltage power supply do you mean the black box power supply or some internal supply? I have checked the black box power supply output and it's 31 when the box indicates it should be 31.5, which leads me to believe it's something else. Please advise and thanks in advance

Does anyone in this forum know how to replace the relay? I am sitting on a couple hundred dollar dust collector until I figure out what the click-click noise is that causes the scanner failure. Please advise.

scanner failure turn power off and on again only appears if i open the cover to copy from the glass.........the automatic feed works fine to copy, but i am unable to scan or copy from the glass........i have tried all the same things i have read above and nothing has worked and chat support is a freaking joke!..

Re: scanner failure on hp d135 by moe (7/4/09 1:10 PM) reply + / -
When you scan off of the ADF, the scanner parks on the left side and the paper passes over it. When you scan off of the glass, the scanner has to find its home position and then scan across the paper. If the scanner can't find home, then it will give a failure. Take the top off and clean the underside of the glass where the white home strip is and also take the top of the scanner off and clean the mirrors inside using a dry cotton swab. Clean every one you can see.

thanks moe for responding, i have no clue as to how to take the top off, and im scared to make it worse, at least now i can copy off the adf..............no worries, though, i had read all of the responses and it seems several people tried that, i will take it in to the local repair shop and get an estimate, but i doubt if i will buy another hp printer......its only 3 yrs old and i have hardly used it, .........but thank for taking the time,

Re: scanner failure on hp d135 by moe (7/4/09 7:50 PM) reply + / -
Make sure that all they are going to do is clean the mirrors and glass. If they advocate anything else, then walk away. I'd charge $60 if someone brought it in to the shop and that's kind of low for California. Down your way, I'd expect it to be a bit less. Had a customer bring a couple of printers from New York with them last week for repair. It's nice to have a good rep.
