Epson C82 Not Printing

Epson C82 Not Printing by KatieElisa (2/27/04 7:26 PM) reply + / -
Hi,

I haven't had any problems with my Epson Stylus C82 until a couple of weeks ago. I replaced one of the ink cartridges and it quit printing. I then replaced another cartridge, and it quit printing. On a hunch, I replaced the remaing two, and now nothing prints. I ran head cleanings and nozzle checks until the new cartridges were half used up. I then bought some cleaning cartridges from maxpatchink.com and let them set for at least 24 hours, and it still didn't work. I have only put Epson cartridges in it since I got it a year and a half ago. I loved the way it printed and I was really upset that it quit. I've read several of the postings on this problem so I know this is a common with the C82. I was wondering if there are any other solutions besides just cleaning the print heads.

I was also wondering, if I can't fix the printer, if there's any place that will buy a defective printer. I've already bought a new one, but I'd like to get back some of the money I put into the old one.

Thanks for any help.

Try using the SSC Service Utility: http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html

Otherwise, go to eBay to sell your defective printer-- there's a booming trade for defective machines there, for parts.

KatieElisa: JUST TO LET YOU KNOW: If you were to do a search on this Printer Repair Site, under the Epson C80 or C82 series Printers, you would see that you are not alone in your problem. I've read several posted messages on this Printer Repair Site on just that particular problem. It seems to be especially bad when you are using Non Epson Inks, but can happen even when using New Epson Ink Cartridges. I recommend that you do a general search on the "fixyourownprinter.com" printer repair site, under your C80 or C82 printer and then you can read about other peoples experiences, their advise and even what they have tried, sometimes successfully. It seems like the problems are not actually related to clogging, but usually more of a Hardware Failure [parts problem], but no way for me to really know. It seems to happen most of the time, just by simply repacing the ink cartridges, as normal...If you want to, you can actually try a Printhead Cleaning Kit, available through the home page on "fixyourownprinter.com" for around $10.00 plus shipping. The kit states that it is not designed for the C80 printers, or for that matter even the newer "C-Series" printers, but the fluid and syringe can still be used in the same way. The main difference is the instructions for the Felt Pad/Cap Assembly. The C80/C82 series and newer C-Series printers, use a different style cap assembly that does not use a felt pad, so you have to ignore that portion of the instructions. The Epson fluids, that comes in the kit, is still the best thing to try, especially if you have a possible clog. You can try the kit if you want to and see if it helps to get the printhead nozzles to open up again...Wes has supplied a link that might also help: "If you want to see what's involved in print head cleaning try this link. http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/printhead.html "...Good Luck! If anyone is interested, I was successful in repairing my C82's problem with printing blank pages.

I noticed that under the pad where the heads sit when parked, there is a black hose attached to it. That black hose is supposed to be attached to another clear hose. Mine was not. The clear hose was sitting there attached to nothing.

I took the cover off of the printer, and pulled the seating pad over to the right. I was then able to use a pair of needlenose pliers and a pair of tweezers to put these 2 hoses back together again.

I then powered up the printer and ran a head cleaning. Much to my surprise, the hoses blew apart again, leaving a pretty good mess with ink splatters. I cleaned up, then removed the hose clamp from the hose which is visible at the front of the assembly. I then transferred it to the hoses under the pad. I then used a simple wire tie to re-clamp the front hose.

I then ran a head cleaning again...this time, everything stayed together. I re-connected to my PC, ran a nozzle check, and voila...it prints. A few head cleanings later, and it was printing like normal again.

It took about 2 hours to figure out how to get it apart and find the problem, but, now my printer is functional again.

Hope this helps...I wish I had taken pictures to show the steps....

Re: Epson C82 Not Printing-->FIXED! by dieter (3/24/04 10:13 AM) reply + / -
The posting of AVTECH on 3/14/04 actually fixed my c82 on the spot. The repair took 30 min without proper finger-pliers. With long pliers it can be done w/o opening the cover. It seems, the hose is connected to a vacuum hose-pump. The vaccum sucks ink out of every set of color-heads at start and also during the cleaning procedure. This assures instant full functionallity and removes all the dry ink bits.

The same thing happened to the printer I had a look at, the tube to the purge unit had become disconnected.

Re: Epson C82 Not Printing by Paul (3/25/04 1:06 PM) reply + / -
I concur - fixed mine by reconnecting the hoses. There are two screws on the back of the printer and two screws on the inside of the front panel under the printer cover. Remove all 4, unclip the case at the four points marked by arrows (one on each side and two on the bottom, then the last retainer is on the inside of the case on the left hand side (opposite the ink pad), release that and pivot the case open to the right. Tweezers and two zip ties fixed mine, and three nozzle checks gave good prints again. Thanks for the help!

Just had a similar problem with at C80 with the vacumm not working, theres a little white adaptor that connects the black hose and the clear hose, the ink had dried up in the adaptor, had to use a straightened staple, (the only thing I could find at the time) but a needle or maybe some 24 G wire like from a phone or CAT5 cable would work also.

Thanks Avtech! Same problem with my C82. Reconnected hose and cleaned heads half dozen times, problem solved. Printer 3 months out of warranty and low use, on the second set of ink when problem surfaced.

Hi I have the same problem with all the others a new printer not used for several months. I cleaned the heads once and got some minimal printing with several colours till I tried the cleaning cycle and it just didn't print anymore. Now I found out here that the hose was disconnected, I fixed that up too. Still nothing though. Not sure if I can do much anymore, anyone knows if I can replace the heads, or inkpad or anything at all to make it brand new? I am wasting away 4 new catridges just watching them go down with no ink on the paper at all. Cleaned under the print head too.... help!!!!!

I know this information does not really give you that much to go on, but I felt you should know about other peoples reports, just in case it happens to apply in your case...It's possible that you may even have an actual HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem] or even a bad/failing ink cartridge, but normally the most common problem is clogging of the Printhead Nozzles. You might want to try using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution, available through the Home Page on "fixyourownprinter.com", at " http://fixyourownprinter.com/ ". When it opens, click-on Epson, under PRINTER REPAIR KITS. Then click-on "Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution" and that page should then open correctly. I have the same problem. A friend gave me his bottle of Epson Head Cleaning Solution and I am worried about the solvent in the cleaning solution might soften or dissolve the plastic materials. I have some small animal feeding latex teats which have a small hole in the end. I was going to slip them over the ink inlet posts so as to make a little well atop the posts so the solution can seep into the posts and hopefully purge out the plugging. Does this sound rational?

Re: Epson C82 Not Printing by Wes (4/21/04 11:34 PM) reply + / -
The solution really needs to be injected slowly into the print head. If you don't have a syringe you may want to look into a low cost ink refill kit to obtain one.

You may be able to get a syringe from a feed & grain or pet store.

Re: Epson C82 Not Printing by John Clouston (4/22/04 2:43 AM) reply + / -
I had the same problems that a lot of other C82 users have been having. I lost the cyan colour so I put in a new cartridge (genuine Epson). This made no difference, so I ran nozzle check and cleaning about a dozen times. Then my black ink ran out so I replaced that cartridge (again genuine Epson). Now it wouldn't print black or cyan! This site then came to the rescue - a number of people said they cleaned the head itself. I did this with a soft cloth dipped in alcohol. You could see the ink starting to move out of the head again after several wipes. Put it all back together and it printed a perfect page first time! If your printer has stood unused for a few days, you may find that the cleaning utility isn't enough. The solution is easy if you can do as I did, but I have to say the tricky part is getting at the head. I took the top cover of the printer off, then removed the ink cartridges and then lifted the head itself out of the carrier. This is very awkward. Someone else said they managed to get a thin paper swab soaked in warm water or alcohol under the head - that's probably a better bet, but access is still very tight. Perhaps others may have some tips on getting at the print head from below without having to dismantle the whole thing?

Re: Epson C82 Not Printing by Denny Conway (4/22/04 9:35 AM) reply + / -
John Ferman: You have to realize that the actual "Epson Print Head Cleaning Solution", was developed by Epson Company to dissolve most clogs, especially if you were using Epson Inks in your printer. This is the same chemical used by Epson in their service department and is safe to use. IF YOU DECIDE TO, TRY THE "EPSON STYLUS HEAD CLEANING SOLUTION", JUST REMEMBER: The "nozzles" inside the printhead assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force on the plunger of the syringe. Damage can even occur when you are using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution method, if you actually try to force the fluid thru the nozzle. To much force/pressure can damage the little tubes inside the Nozzle Assembly and then it will never work again. One individual printhead nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair. You can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for a day or two, to try and dissolve a possible bad clog. Sometimes you might have to use the fluids several times to be able to dissolve the clog in the printhead nozzles. Sometimes the clog will never disolve, or it actually damages the nozzles. The longer the clog has been in, the worse it is to remove. Again, if the cleaning fluids don't help, then its generally time to invest in a new printer. In some more expensive printers, you may want to get an estimate to replace the printhead assembly, but as a general rule, its not really economical to do in the smaller Epson Ink Jet style printers. You can generally buy a new small printer cheaper than you can have your old one repaired for. EXAMPLE: The printhead assembly in the "C80" Printer sells for around $120 to $130...The Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution, sold by "fixyourownprinter.com", states that it is not designed for the C80 printers, or for that matter even the newer series Epson Printers, but the fluid and syringe can still be used in the same way. The main difference is the instructions for the Cap Assembly [felt pad]. The C80 series and some newer series printers, use a different style cap assembly that does not use a felt pad, so you have to ignore that portion of the instructions, if it does not apply to your particular model of Epson Printer. The Epson Cleaning Solution is still the best thing to try, especially if you have a possible clog. I have read of many people using the kit on their newer printers and there have been no reported problems that I am aware of. You can try the Epson Solution if you want to and see if it helps to get the printhead nozzles to open up again...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Re: Epson C82 Not Printing by John Ferman (4/22/04 9:31 PM) reply + / -
After reading about the disconnected tubing someone mentioned, I removed the C82 cover - 5 screws and 4 trip latches. The tubing connection that you can see from the front cover up on the right side was intact but the tubing connection underneath the 'cleaning unit (thingy with the plastic sponge in it)' was disconnected. The tubing connection that you can see easily had spring clamp, but the one underneath did not. I shook and jiggled the C82 to jar it loose were it hiding, but nothing. Why Epson would not use a spring clamp on the tubing (being that it is tough to get at) is beyond my understanding - shabby engineering maybe. Anyway I got it back together (used Monster Glue) and I am afraid I deformed the spring but that couldn't be helped. I was able to mount the animal feeding teats on the ink inlet posts, filled them up with the cleaning solution and they have been sitting for half a day now - tomorrow I'll withdraw the surplus with a syringe and tidy up the drips - and give her a test run. I'll know soon enough if I have a printer or a large paper weight. I took some digitals and would share them with the list if that were okay and I knew how to do it.

Re: Epson C82 Not Printing by Xon (4/23/04 8:06 AM) reply + / -
Hi, when people say they inject the liquid into the head, do they mean the holes on the small block after taking apart the whole thing and left with the circuit board on top of the actual little print head? This includes removing a rubber layer on top of the block. I removed the whole thing and its quite easy after a few tries actually, even to put it back together. Seems like people are cleaning the nozzles that puncture the catridges, am I right? Seems you can get alot closer to the printhead by removing the metal brackets that hold the nozzles. Please correct me if I am wrong somewhere in terminology. After removing the part which puctures the cartridges, from the printhead, I know that ink did manage to flow all the way to the printhead as I could see fresh ink there, even after a previous cleaning. I tried dripping some fluid into the inlet holes on the printhead block for the 4 colors as I did not have any plunger, this seemed a little lame as the holes were smaller than a drop. Also I soaked the bottom of the head a few mm deep, maybe 5-7mm, into a tray of printer cleaning solution. The bottom of the printhead is smooth and consists of 2 fine lines of unbelievably small holes which is where the ink should exit from. Finally a few faint dots of blue did print, which is better than nothing at all. Ok now for a brand new continuation of the C82 saga, meaning, don't do what I did unless you want to end up like me.... I suspect that the overflow of some cleaning solution might have shorted my circuit board on the printhead a little. Whenever I try to print something, it halts just before printing and power offs. Strangely enough it can only be turned back on, if I change a power cable, or open the fuse on the power plug and put the same fuse back in again. Maybe some electrical engineer out there knows the problem after hearing this.. And once again, does anyone out there know if the little printhead can be changed for a **NEW** one? Sure beats paying for new ink catridges just so that you can run dozens of cleaning cycle with nothing printing still. Thanks

Re: Epson C82 Not Printing by Wes (4/23/04 8:40 AM) reply + / -
There is no removal of parts needed to clean the print heads. The ONLY thing that needs to be removed is the ink cartridge. And unless you know for sure the print head is bad you should never remove it. They are a little delicate and you can damage them if you are not careful.

To see how to clean the print heads read this link http://epsonhelp.freehttp.com/Printhead.html

Friday morning report after a harrowing Thursday. The animal feeding teats mounted on the ink inlet posts were nearly empty, meaning solution had dribbled through the inlets. Pulled them (the feeders) off, re-inserted the cartridges, ran two nozzle checks, got all colors and black on the second try. Ran my standard color test file (solid bands of magenta, cyan, yellow, red, green, blue and surronded by dead black) and it printed. Looked okay. Later on I'll be printing some challenging jpegs, so will report later. As I deformed (by over-stretching) the return spring under the cleaning station, the jury is still out on ongoing head cleaning by software.

Re: Epson C82 Not Printing by Denny Conway (5/5/04 4:28 PM) reply + / -
BB: Thats why printers under $100 are basically considered as being DISPOSABLE PRINTERS, in the Printer World. Unfortunatly its a disposable world anymore, even if we don't agree with it or like it. People want and buy inexpensive ink jet printers from almost all manufacters, at a tremendous rate. Think about it, you can usually buy a new printer cheeper than you can have your old printer repaired for, or at least close to the price. Today you can almost but a new printer cheaper than you can replace the ink cartridges for. People just don't want to pay for quality anymore, so all companies produce the cheep small ink jet printers. To keep those prices so low, quality is sacrificed and options are given up. Thats one of the reasons some new printers only have a 90 day warranty and it seems like they are lucky to last that long sometimes. Printers were more expensive a few years ago, but they were also built better and seemed to last longer. I know we get what we pay for, but it's still a shame...Denny Conway

Same thing.

I'm furious. New printer 1 year old. very light home use.
Paid 140 EUR for it. The ink cartridge cost 40 EUR !

The moment before it was printing OK the second after new black ink tank change does not print anymore!

I'm taking it apart anyway since is out of warranty. Tried cleaning with water the head. No success but water goes through.

Does anybody has service manual for the thing so I can take the print assembly out and check it from below? I'm not going to spend a single cent on Epson thing (including manuals) I rather I throw the damm thing in the bin.

Sorry.

Part 2.

Last night I took the C82 apart by removing top and bottom plastic case and checked all.
The tubes where attached, but I noticed inside the tranparent one a clog of dried ink so I detached all,
flushed with water and put it back.

Be aware that the trasparent tube cannot be completely removed because it goes through the vacuum pump (the black cilinder) where an eccentric disck punps ink out.

Now I'm reasembling the whole thing....finger crossed.

One thing I learnt never to buy epson again and since I'm responsible for corporate purchase I will try to minimize any Epson purchase in future.

I'm really disappointed it is allowed to sale such a thing.

My previous printer was Canon (branded Apple) and I changed to Epson after many years after having repeated cartridge head failures (of new cartridges that is).

Ho do I resent the ink level in the cartridge without buyin the 20$ harware device ? Any suggestion ?

Cheers

Hi everybody.

after all this plus additional flushing of water through the nozzles (I could see it coming out) I tried the self test and some faint color came out to disappear soon....:-(

I have ordered the ink cleaning set from this site and I'll try the deep cleaning.

One question :

looking at the print head from below I can see multiple ( 3 or 4 ) vertical lines of tiny dots (the nozzles I assume).
When I flush water with the syringe through the black one I see water coming out from one (the leftmost) hole column, but not from the whole column only from the upper and lower part. Does it means it is clogged in the middel or is this the normal shape of the nozzle outlet ? (I made a drawing here below where
W means water coming out and * means I can barely see something (a hole ?) but nothing coming out.

Further info on how to disassemble the lower plastic shell of C82:

1) remove the two screws on right side of the printer holding the metal frame to the bottom case
2) On the back of the printer there is a rectangular "hatch bay" door hold in place by two platic latch. Remove it (from inside gently push the two latches)
3) bak of printer, near bottom remove 1 screw fixing plastic lower shell to metal frame.
4) left pull the ribbon gray cable fixed to the lower shell out of its socket on the PCB
4a) remove the screen fizing the orange cable of the front control panel present in the upper shell to the metal frame
(front right)
5) Pull the metal frame out being carfull with the centronics upper metal "thingy" which need to be put completely open (up) before lifting the metal frame out from the lower shell.
6) be careful not to rip the ribbon cable between the upper and the lower shell.
6b remember to disconnet the transparent tube below the printing head from the bottom shell tube (wast ink tank I assume) (a small black tube to the right)

Voila'

Now you can access the thing from below.I was not able to dismount the vacuum pump where the transparent tuble goes through. Any idea ?

Also here you can take out the felt and access the wast ink depot below and clean it up that is. I flushed some water through as well here

Hope this help.

One way to unclog the printer head microholes is to set the head into water, (distilled, deionized, or filtered to make sure no calcium, iron, phosphorus or any other precipitatable solids deposit on or in the microholes - remember the microholes to us are too tiny to see but to water dissolved atoms or ions the holes are massive). If you have one of those electric plate coffee mug warmers, use it as warm water improves the cleaning action of the water.

I have already removed the whole print assembly, but then ?

Thanks in advance

Michele: You need a Service Manual for reference, disassembly and trounleshooting. I don't recommend actually removing Epson Printhead Assemblies for cleaning, because they are easy to damage and its also easy to get the Factory Settings thrown off, but thats your choice. I have not checked, but you can normally find Service Manuals and or Service Adjustment Programs/Resets for most printers, at www.2manuals.com (most Service Manuals can usually be downloaded for around $10 /- ), or from http://www.user-service-manuals.com/epson-service-manuals.htm, or even from http://www.sm.copyprofi.net/index.htm [check prices of available Service Manuals]...Denny Conway

Thanks AVTECH! Your solution worked like a charm for me. Seems like Epson should recall all these faulty printers...

I want to pass on a little trick for all of you that wasted a cartridge while trying to clean the print head. If you notice, your cartridge still has ink in it. The little chip embedded in the cartridge is lying to the printer about how many pages it has printed based on an assumption algorith to detect that the cartridge is empty. You can physically tell that the cartridge is not empty.

If you have a new cartridge laying around, you can trick the printer by installing the new cartridge and then replacing it with the old one without using the cartridge install method. Yeah, that means that you must switch the cartridge while the head is parked.

Hopes this works for some of you. Better than wasting another $30 too soon on an untruthful cartridge.

Re: Epson C82 Not Printing by Denny Conway (5/28/04 9:29 AM) reply + / -
Ximmortal: The only thing you have to realize is that your printer will not know when it actually runs out of ink. When that ink in the old used cartridge runs out, then air gets into the Printhead Nozzles. If you do not see that your printer ran out of ink and replace that cartridge with-in 30 minutes or so, that air then starts to dry out any remaining ink inside of the nozzles and that normally results in clogging. One individual printhead nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair. You can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. Then even when you reinstall that new ink cartridge, it may not be able to fush out the possible clog...Denny Conway

I also fixed this clogging problem by soaking the little "Sponge tray" that the heads sit in with some print head cleaning solution. I manually moved the prit head out of the way and dropped the solution on with a pippet. Once the "Tray" was soaked, I moved the head back to the parked position and left the printer like that for 48 hours. The printer is notw as good as new and all the nozzles are fine.

Hey everyone,

I too am on my 3rd C82 in less than a year and a half. I replaced the ink yesterday with Epson brand ink, and it wouldnt print after that. The printer is of course 2 months out of warranty, and Epson offered no help. I checked the hose that all of you are talking about, I took everything apart and cleaned the hose out... still no printing. It seems to be using ink each time I do a nozzel check, so ink is coming out but and it acts as if it is printing but still kicks out blank pages. I cleaned the "tray" out, but still no luck. Epson said my only option was to take it to their authorized repair center... well over a few hundred miles from here. Any other ideas? I really need to get this working. Any ideas would be much help. I've tried everything I can see/think of. Help!

I also have a C82 with a no print problem. I am trying to get the cover off my printer and I have read and followed the advice from the other posts, but I have a latch that is eluding me. I physically removed 5 screws-2 inside-2 upper back and 1 lower back; I was able to pop one latch in front left, one latch left side and the latch on the right side by the power switch. Where is this fourth latch? I even popped off the rectangualar box above the power cord and I can feel two metal clips but they don't seem to do anythng.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Pat

On the sides of the C82 towards the back (just below the vent slats, where the paper sits), you will see two slots, (one each side), get a thin piece of metal, (I used an old computer pci card metal plate), and push it in whilst pulling up gently on the cover. Repate on the other side and the cover will come off.
Hope this helps.

I also had a C82 that wasn't printing anything. I had cleaned 12 times but still NOTHING was being printed. I followed the advise from several people about the clear tubing being disconnected, but the tube connections were fine on both ends, Next, I read about the Epson cleaning solution - so I decided to give it a try. I received the pkg in 2 days and followed the directions exactly. The next day I cycled thru 3 cleaning routines and tried I print test. It was like brand new! I coundn't believe it! Great product. Thanks so much! I have almost a full bottle left in case it ever happens again!

Very light home use could be the problem by Cora (7/3/04 7:54 AM) reply + / -
Try this for all of those who are just about to buy a new printer because they are fed up with high prices and clogging heads.

First, with the hose fixes that are posted in mind, get some generic inks, some non scented, pure windex cleaner (if you want to spend the money on EPSON cleaner go ahead) and cheap copier paper.

Now clean and do as all others have said to get your printer working, printing printhead tests and so on.

Hopefully after using up a good amount of ink and cleaner, your printer can now print. If so, have a 3 week test. Print at LEAST one full color photo everyday using your favorite generic ink of your choice.

The purpose of this is to see if what I've read on message boards and seen myself holds true for all epson printers.

That you must, regarldess of ink, country, paper, print at least 3 times a week, ideally once a day to keep the printer from getting hopelessly clogged.

Re: Epson C82 Not Printing by Wylie (7/11/04 2:42 PM) reply + / -
I've killed my C82. After the forum suggested soaking routines failed, and despite cautions of how fragile the print head is, I accepted new risks. The device served no useful purpose in its clogged state.

After removing top and bottom covers, I noted that the vacuum pump exit hose (right behind the operators panel) could be routed "outide" the cover by drilling a small hole in the lower case.
The end result was good.

I tested my new "manual" access by filling the head parking pad with some water and then applying suction to the exit tube from a manual bulb. It drew the contents of the pad through the Epson pump and to the outside. The external access allowed purging ink at times of my chosing and (more importantly) without informing the smart chip.

An interesting benefit of this is that I can observe when the Epson program is purging ink and how much volume it consumes. I now understand why cleaning cycles empty the cartridges quickly.
An alarming side effect is the need to attach a catch-bottle to this external hose

Rather than remove the head to gain access, I snipped away the black tin shield at the far left of the carriage, then cut a square opening in the plastic case directly under that site so that I could clean or soak the business end of the head by turning the machine upside-down. This satisfied my curiosity but was unproductive. I believe I over-soaked the head and would have been better off soaking it in its parking pad (rightside-up) instead. The C82 now powers off in mid-page.

I have an Epson C82, purchased 1/2003. Since then, we've gone through 2 sets of Epson black & color cartridges and lastly, 1 Staples black cartridge. I just bought a 2-pack of Epson black cartridges and replaced the Staples black cartridge. No black in came out of the print head. Cleaning several times with the Epson cleaning utility did not fix the problem.

Came across this site. Read about the tube coming off the cleaning station. Checked and found the tube was disconnected. Disassembled top cover. Disconnected tube from pipe in front of cleaning station. Injected rubbing alcohol with a syring into the tube and used a very small nylon wire tie as a "pipe cleaner". Am still mid-way in cleaning the unit. Ordered print-head cleaning solution cartridge for C82 from this site. Printer now sitting with tube vertical, filled with alcohol to disolve dried out, clog of ink in tube.

Looks like the sponge is missing from the black cleaning tray.

I had a Lexmark Z22 which clogged up. I threw it out and bought a new one. The new one lasted for 12 months and clogged up. It also used ink cartridges at the rate of a set every 3 months. I threw it out and bought the Epson C82, vowing never to go back to Lexmark. Now, I'm seeing the light - the best thing you can do is go to a dry-toner Laser color printer. It's more expensive up front and the dry-toner cartridges cost more, but it won't aggravate you as frequently as these ink-jet printers do. I have an HP660 color inkjet that I've had since 1997. It has clogged up, too, but overall has been a better device than either the Lexmark or the Epson. Ergo, all ink-jet printers will clog up if not used frequently.

I'll update later.

Thank you, AVTECH! The small hose was disconnected from the pad as you predicted. Printed for a couple weeks and began not printing AGAIN! Checked the hose, still attached. Next logical step: the pump. Problem is you need to lift the main chassis from the bottom half of the case. 3 screws on the inside, 1 on the back and a retainer tab inside rear. The small panel above the power cord removes so you can thread the cord out. Watch the white ribbon connector on the left side (facing) and unscrew the orange wire for the power buttons. Once the chassis was removed I discovered my new problem. Where does the ink go you may wonder. I'll tell you. It pools at the bottom of your printer. The hose ends in a trough with foam pads around it presumably to soak up the ink. The massive glob of sticky mess surrounded the discharge tube so it would not drain. This rendered the pump useless. I removed the tube from it's track and cleaned it thoroughly with hot water. Scraped up the majority of the mess and reassembled the printer and performed a head cleaning. First nozzle check looked perfect. I learned alot from this forum and from having the nizzuts to tear into my printer. I now scoff at the phrase "no user servicable parts inside". Thanks. I hope this helps someone.

Re: Epson C82 Not Printing by John Malone (8/12/04 8:04 AM) reply + / -
Update: Was able to remove print mechanism from plastic housing so that I could see under the docking station. After cleaning the clear plastic ink drain tube, I reconnected it to the male-to-male connector using needle-nose pliers. I used a very small plastic wire-tie to secure it to the male end of the connector. I put some rubbing alcohol in the cleaning tray and parked the heads there for an hour. I then ran through several cleaning cycles and the printer is finally printing black ink very clearly. I never had to use the black cleaning cartridge that I ordered and received after I got it working. The color jets are still slightly clogged and there is banding when printing color photos. I am very frustrated with inkjet printers, so I am buying a color laser printer with dry toner for important work and leaving the inkjet for family fun. These inkjet printers always seem to fail when you need them the most.

If I can purchase a color cleaning cartridge (none was available a few weeks ago, I'll try that and see if it brings the color printing back to a usable state.

I spent all nite last nite doing much of what's detailed in this fascinating thread. Cleaned the Tubes by injecting alcohol in the drain tube and on the parking pad. This was succesful. Removed the head and soaked it in alcohol also. Reassembled without a hitch, but now the printer turns itself off everytime it's about to start printing, then won't turn back on again without unplugging. So I guess its DOA.
BTW, to remove the print head:
Remove the 2 screws on either side, and slide the steel retainer out to the left. Note its orientation.
Pry up the four prong spring clip that pushes against the cartridges.
remove the plastic clip on the right the holds the 2 cables. It has 1 pin/slot combo near the bottom that has to go in first when replacing it, and 2 retaining clips higher up that need to be pried carefully to release it. Then it slides right up. Note carefully the orientation of the 2 cables, the mylar protector, and the tiny hook in the mylar that goes in the top of the retainer.
Good Luck.
I'm convinced that this is a great printer for daily use, but does not do well for the casual user like me. Also, it must be turned off at the switch to go through its tube and nozzle clearing cycle. turning your power strip off bypasses that critical function. Too late for me!

Did the AVTECH maneuver on my C82 but it still would not print. Noticed small bubbles on the cleaning pad which would indicate there was some backpressure and probably an obstruction in the plastic discharge tube. Removed the bottom of the printer and found exactly the same sludge buildup that J. A. Jones describes. Cleaned out the reservoir and hose. After one cleaning cycle it is printing excellent photos.

This website just saved me $100. Went cheap and replaced one of my colors with non-Epson and immediately that color would not work. Thinking it was the cartridge, I replaced it with Epson and still no luck. Tried multiple cleanings to no avail. Had to replace other colors after the cleanings and now THEY didn't work. Even tried the cleaning solution referenced above. Nada.

Took the printer apart per the instructions from this site and low and behold, the tube beneath the pad was indeed disconnected. With my fat fingers, long nosed pliers and my wife's tweezers (don't tell her), I was finally able to reattach after 30 minutes of aggravation. Did a quick 3 head cleanings and my printer is back at 100%. Didn't have any patience left to try and cinch-tie the connection. Hope it holds. Thanks AVTECH.

Those models are so new that I have not even seen one that was not actually under warranty still. Epson Company does not even allow their dealers to work on those models under warranty. They simply send a Replacement Printer in exchange for the defective unit thats under warranty and the defective printer is then sent back to Epson. If your printer is actually new and still under its origional Factory Warranty, then there's no charge to talk to the "Epson Technical Support Department". That way you are talking directly with a technician, that is actually trained by Epson Company on your particular printer. To see available phone numbers for technical support and replacement parts ordering, go on-line to Epson @ " http://www.epson.com ", or call the Epson Automated Support Locator @ 1-800-442-2110 [press 1, then 1 & following prompts]. If your printer is out of warranty, you will need a credit card, before the technicians can help you, because there is a charge for technical support over the phone. Same thing with me too, hose fell off but on the side under the print head cartridge. Took a few mins, but the easiest way was to disconnect the coupler altogether. I found this clogged anyway and used a paperclip to clear. I then pushed the bottom hose under the carriage support. I put the connector hose on the coupler (which is actually smaller on one end to get an idea of the diameter, very small)and held the hose to the vacuum with one set of pliers, and inserted the other coupler end. I then twisted the hose back under the support. It was fairly easy to guide the other end now on the sponge nipple. I think with the hose all connected except for the sponge nipple, it made it longer and easier to maneuver with a pair of tweezers. Total time approx 2 hours to figure it out???? Works fine. I used to sell these and had I known about the problem I could have fixed quite a few units instead of shipping back.

Re: Epson C82 Not Printing by Denny Conway (2/7/05 11:56 AM) reply-1 + / -
CoveredInInk: Either the magenta & yellow Printheads are clogged, or they are failing, or the Main Board assembly is failing, or those ink cartridges are failing. Although it's possible that you may even have an actual hardware/parts problem [failing Printhead Assembly or Main Board Assembly], normally the most common problem is clogging of the Printhead Nozzles. Thats especially true if you were actually using Non-Epson Ink Cartridges in your printer. You might want to try using the Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution, available through fixyourownprinter.com, at http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kits/epson , but it will only help, if there is an actual clogged printhead assembly. When it opens, click-on "Epson Stylus Head Cleaning Solution" thats listed for your particular printer. The Epson solution sells for around $10.00 plus shipping. It includes a syringe and some Epson printhead cleaning solution, which is designed to dissolve most clogs, especially if you were using Epson inks. This is the same chemical used by Epson in their service department. You can try it if you want to and see if you can get the printhead nozzles to open up again, but that will only help if they are actually clogged. It was basically designed by Epson Company for use on their older models of ink jet printers, but people have been using it on the newer models, with success reported. Sometimes the clog will never dissolve, or it actually damages the nozzles. EXAMPLE: The printhead assembly in the "C80" Printer sells for around $120 to $130. There is a REVIEW of the "Printhead Cleaning Solution", as well as general "Printhead Cleaning Instructions", that is available to view at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/EKR.html ...Good Luck! Denny,
Thanks for your reply. After thinking about the problem some more, I'm not sure if it is a print head problem. I tried to print a webpage that is primarily orange text and everything that was supposed to be orange is turquoise. Normally if a ink cartridge is not functioning, wouldn't that area of color just be blank on the page? It is as if signals are getting crossed somewhere and printing all colors as blue. Any thoughts?

Re: Epson C82 Not Printing by Denny Conway (2/7/05 4:52 PM) reply + / -
CoveredInInk: You have to realize that most shades & colors are created by simply mixing Cyan, Magenta & Yellow together. After all you do not have an Orange Ink Cartridge installed, to be able to print out that "primarily orange text". If one of the color Printheads was not printing at all, or if even some of the nozzles are clogged, then you do not get the correct color. You would need to run an actual Nozzle Test, to see if some of the nozzles are not actually open and printing. If so then either you have a clogged printhead assembly, or a failing printhead assembly, or possibly even a bad ink cartridge. Its also possible that the correct electrical signal is not getting to the actual printhead assembly, causing it not to fire. In that case, it would usually indicate a possibly failing Main Board Assembly...Denny Conway

Re: Epson C82 Not Printing by Denny Conway (2/15/05 1:27 PM) reply + / -
Anonymous: I have read, where another person actually used a silicone cement to hold that hose in place, onto its plastic pipe type of mounting. I would suggest that you clean off any ink on the outside of that hose end and on that pipe with damp q-tips first. Then you might want to use another q-tip, with alcohol on it, to re-clean both those areas again, just so the silicone cement will bond better. Its also a good idea to make sure that fluids will actually flow thru those tiny hoses or tubes, before you cement them in place. Several people have reported those hoses to actually be clogged. Then they have to take that area apart to get the clogs out, before the fluids, or even the actual inks will flow again. You might want to first try pushing a little water thru the hose, by injecting it with a small syringe...You might want to also review the "Dura Brite Blank Output Information Page", at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/duraink.html , for any possible additional help...Good Luck! The disconnected hose was my problem too. And this fix worked, for now.

The disconnected end is the end underneaththe cleaning sponge. You have to slide the print heads/ink cartidges to the left. On the righ is the sponge cleaner. Slide the sponge cleaner to the right. I held it in place by laying a screwdriver against it to keep it from spring ing back.

Now you should see a disconnected clear hose and a flexible black "teat" hanging down. With needle-nose pliers carefully massage the hose over the teat. Make sure it is pulled all the way up. I used my fingernail.

Put the cover back on. Run the head cleaning , ie. push the ink button for 3 seconds. This refills the clear hose with ink. It won't print again until you do that.

Voila. it works. I wish I found this site before I decide to throw it away. I punched, banged on and shook the printer the moving heads while it was printing blanks. And even turned it upside down and shook it while it was operating. Good thing is, now that it prints, it didn't seem to be affectd by the last-ditch kick it till it works efforts. It still prints good.

Hi

I have a client's Epson C82 and followed the steps to free the clog on the
waste ink tube and reconnect the loose tube. I took these photos so you can see.

Anyone know how to clead "maintenance request error" (all lights blinking when powering on). Cant find anything anywhere about it.

You can use the SSC service utility from here http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html install/configure it and reset the protection counter. It's a good idea to clean or replace the abosober pads but your printer won't explode if you skip the pads once.

I hope this helps,

Wes.

Saludos

There are several layers of hell inside your printer. Getting the cover off was OK - some sneaky tabs but that was expected. Getting to the hose under the print head was OK - mine was attached but I pulled it off, pumped some air through with a syringe, then put it back on again. Don't be pulling on the hose - it passes through a vacuum pump which I expect works like a kidney dialysis machine, so it rubs the hose to create suction - it's meant to be tight.

Anyway, it was the second hose that was my problem. Referred to the instructions about removing the chassis to get underneath and there was a black badness down there - plenty of goop to scoop out under the filters that had piled high enough to block the hose. I removed that hose and poked through a wire to clear the blockages and then rinsed it with water until the hose was clear instead of black. Cleaned it up, cut one of the filters to make some extra ink-waste room inside, and put the hoses and filters back in place.

Attached the chassis again - NOTE that you will detach the ribbon wire whether you mean to or not - and the colour is printing OK but not the black. I did crimp the ribbon wire when I was re-attaching it to the panel on the chassis, so I don't know if that's the problem or if my black ink nozzle is just clogged. Still, I guess I can make my text dark brown until I work that out.

Any ideas let me know.

I removed the black cartridge and then put it back again - after a head clean routine it did print in black for a page, then trailed off until it wasn't printing black at all, so it's definitely something to do with the black cartridge. Plenty of ink though and the head isn't clogged so I don't understand :(

Re: Re: Re: Epson C82 Not Printing by EllieG (5/3/06 1:34 AM) reply + / -
Hooray! Ran the head cleaning utility 4 times until I got a low ink warning on one of my colour cartridges - SOME black spots appearing on a nozzle test but not enough to use for printing.

SO - had a look around, found some instructions for using a head cleaning solution and decided to use warm water instead. Yes, it should be distilled/demineralised but if you're faced with a printer you can't use then good quality tap water will do.

Parked the print cartridges by pressing the ink button on the printer. Removed the black cartridge. Used a syringe to put some water into the nozzle of the ink cartridge (figured there might be an air bubble causing the problem). Then used the same syringe to gently gently put some fluid through the cartridge 'spike', and then sucked up the excess fluid and attached the black ink cartridge again.

TRICK - turn off the printer, hold the trash button down as you turn on the printer, keep the trash button held down until a nozzle test page starts to print (will have to wait for any cartridge cleaning so be patient). The good thing about this is that it also prints % values of how much ink you have left in each cartridge.

The black was back at about 80%, so I ran some text pages through and they printed fine - probably 100% within a page or two.

SO YAY - FIXED - and it only took 6 HOURS!!!

Well, Hey! After doing all the cleaning things (used genuine cleaning stuff) and checking the hoses which were attached, to no avail, I decided to take the bull by the horns before dumping the thing. Ends up what the previous poster said worked for me! I intended to come here and post this "new" albeit unofficial fix and low and behold EllieG had already done it! Anyway, took warm water and with the syringe, filled the hoses with warm water then put the syringe on the spike thing and injected some water in and gently reversed the action several times until it flowed freely. Did a cleaning cycle with the cover off so I could verify that fluid was flowing through the tube and it's working like new again. Granted, doing this may damage the fine nozzles but what the heck I was ready to throw it in the trash anyway. Only took me 3 HOURS!!! HAHA

I got my C82 from the trash. Pluged it in. It worked for a while. Its trash anyway. Lets take it apart! I got the cover off with great difficulty. I removed the parking thingy and pulled off the clear tube from the tit. Rinced with hot water. I squezed the clear tube to break up the ink clogs. Flushed the tube with water. Cleaned out the gob of ink in the waste bin. Reattached the hose to the tit with great difficulty. I turned the gears by hand to see what the tube did. The tube sucked water through the sponge on the parking thingy. Must be a vacume pump. BUT. You guys said the tube keeps blowing itself apart! Is that pump a vacume pump or a pressure pump? Or both? It seems to me it has to be both. The ink cartrigies have no vent. It seems to me they have to be pressurized for the ink to come out. BUT. Why the vacume? To help flush the print heads? It works now. Yea! All I need now is a DOS printer driver for Quattro Pro v1. Are there printer codes available? Like EPSON used to use. ESC1, ESC127, ESCd, etc and so on.

The clog causes back pressure.

Re: Epson C82 Not Printing by Simple 8 (1/7/07 11:58 AM) reply + / -
I think I know why I had great difficulty removing the cover. You have to remove the paper output tray first! If you examine the tray near the hinges, you will find a small access hole. I used a bent paper clip to slide the spring loaded hinge away from the hinge hole. Thus releasing the paper output tray.

Oops. That was another Epson printer I found in the trash. BUT. I am pretty sure the C82 has a similer access hole.

Re: Epson C82 Not Printing - patience and a Q-tip by Marcus FitzGibbon (1/13/07 6:48 PM) reply + / -
Think hard before getting the screwdriver out! I've been using Epson printers for over ten years andf despit the fact that they dumped all drivers for pre OSX printers (thank you Gimp print) I still reckon they're the best.
I've just revived a C82 that has sat unused on my shelf for 18 months with dried-up nozzles and probably a spider living inside.
Put in new cartridges - any old brand as long as they're new and then print a page with clear panels of each colour - especially black.
Then print again and again. Run a cleaning routine 'till you're bored shitless.
As a last resort take a Qtip, remove the offending cartridge(es) and press some lighter fluid, or isopropil alcohol, cleaning fluid, or even clean distilled water over the bit that sucks the ink out of the cart.
It makes sense. If you can get something through that teeny gap then the ink's going to follow.
Be prepared to spend lots of time and have agood book or a movie to take up the dull hours in between.
You'll get there in the end.

If not - chuck it. Buy a new one (it's cheaper than a new set of branded cart's).
