 | Epson CX5200 clog by John H (1/26/04 8:34 PM) | +2 + / - | Believe I have a clogged print head on my Epson Stylus CX5200. The nozzle check has gaps in the black line, which numerous cleaning cycles didn't fix. Ordered the kit from elsewhere on this site, which promised complete instructions, but there's no sponge pads in the "service station" area in the printer. The "alternative approach" in the instructions is a bit ambiguous, willing to try it but wanted to double-check from the experts on the board as to whether that alternate approach would work specifically for my printer or not. Thanks.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (1/27/04 10:52 AM) | + / - | John H.: The Printhead Cleaning Kit sold by "fixyourownprinter.com", states that it is not designed for the C80 printers, or for that matter even the newer series Epson Printers, but the fluid and syringe can still be used in the same way. The main difference is the instructions for the Cap Assembly [felt pad]. The C80 series and newer series printers, use a different style cap assembly that does not use a felt pad, so you have to ignore that portion of the instructions. The Epson fluids, that comes in the kit, is still the best thing to try, especially if you have a possible clog, but you try it at your own risk on the newer Epson Printers. I have read of many people using the kit on their newer printers and there have been no reported problems that I am aware of. You can try the kit if you want to and see if it helps to get the printhead nozzles to open up again...IF YOU DECIDE TO, TRY THE "PRINTHEAD CLEANING KIT", JUST REMEMBER: The "nozzles" inside the printhead assembly can be easily damaged by using to much force. Damage can even occur when you are using the printhead cleaning kit method, if you actually try to force the fluid thru the nozzle. To much force/pressure can damage the little tubes inside the Nozzle Assembly and then it will never work again. One individual printhead nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair. You can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for a day or two, to try and dissolve a possible bad clog. Sometimes you might have to use the fluids several times to be able to dissolve the clog in the printhead nozzles. Sometimes the clog will never disolve, or it actually damages the nozzles. The longer the clog has been in, the worse it is to remove. Again, if the cleaning fluids don't help, then its generally time to invest in a new printer. In some more expensive printers, you may want to get an estimate to replace the printhead assembly, but as a general rule, its not really economical to do in the smaller Epson Ink Jet style printers. You can generally buy a new small printer cheaper than you can have your old one repaired for. EXAMPLE: The printhead assembly in the "C80" Printer sells for around $120 to $130...Good Luck! | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by John H. (1/28/04 9:01 PM) | + / - | Denny, thanks for the reply. You reference the cleaning kit not being for my printer, but all the site says is that it's for every Epson inkjet other than the C80 model. I have a CX5200, therefore I bought the kit.
That being said, you're likely right about it not being for my printer and it's just the site that's unclear. Worth trying as I was about to just replace the printer (they're $130, which is not much more than the retail value of the ink cartridges).
The solution is soaking now, we'll see how it goes.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog/blank page by John S. (2/16/04 3:56 PM) | + / - | I desperately need help. I've a one-year old CX5200 which has been working fine until I changed the black ink cartridge just now. I've changed ink many times but this time the new cartridge did not shake well. I did not feel like ink sloshing inside. But then I put it in anyway since the date code is 9/2005 (too much faith Auh!). After the printer finished charging I tried to copy a black and white page but a completely BLANK page came out. I tried cleaning the head and nozzle but did not help. This has never happened before. Does it sound like a clog print head or damaged print head.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (2/16/04 4:04 PM) | + / - | John S: It's possble that you may even have an actual HARDWARE PROBLEM [parts problem], but normally that would indicate that your printhead assembly is probably clogged. You might want to try using the Printhead Cleaning Kit, available through the home page on "fixyourownprinter.com", for around $10.00 plus shipping. It includes a syringe and some Epson Printhead Cleaning Solution, which is designed to dissolve most clogs, especially if you were using Epson inks. You can try it if you want to and see if you can get the printhead nozzles to open up again...If you want to see what's involved in print head cleaning, Wes has supplied a link that might help: " http://www.epsonhelp.web1000.com/printhead.html "...Good Luck! | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by John P. (2/25/04 11:14 AM) | + / - | A co-worker and I each bought the CX5200(same day, same store. We purchased them 53 weeks ago and they both stopped printing last week. I've done nozzle checks and head cleanings multiple times with no results. The printers show that the ink level is fine but when we print, the print head moves like it is prining but only a blank page comes out. It is very strange that we both have this problem on the same week. The printers were working the day before this happened. Could this be a timed microchip set to self destruct at the end of the warranty?

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (2/25/04 11:49 AM) | + / - | John: Not that I know of, but I know that it sure seems that way sometimes. Just to let you know: I work for an Epson Authorized Service Dealer. Unfortunatly the quality of most major manufactors printers, are not what they were just a few years ago. Of course printers were a lot more expensive then, so we were paying more for that quality. People keep buying the inexpensive printers, so the manufactors keep producing them. Almost any printer under $100, is basically thought of as disposable in the Printer Industry. Some printers only carry a 90 day warranty and it seems like they are lucky to even get past the 90 days sometimes. It costs almost as much to buy the replacement ink cartridges as it does to buy another new inexpensive printer. If you were to do a search on this Printer Repair Site, under the Epson CX5200 or even the CX3200 Printer, you would see that you are not alone in your problem...Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Alan L (3/7/04 10:50 AM) | + / - | I have an Epson CX5200 also, & it looks like I got lucky: my problem happened 2 weeks BEFORE my warranty expired: All the colors printed... but not Black. So Epson sent me a new Black cartridge. After I installed, the Black printed.... but now none of the colors print! As I am still (barely) under warranty... Epson is sending me a new CX5200. Until it arrives, has this happened to anyone else, & if so, any suggestions?
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Alan L (3/7/04 8:47 PM) | + / - | It helps... for next time. I guess the implication is that there is nothing I can do now?
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Wes (3/7/04 9:17 PM) | + / - | Basically it sounds like the print head is partially clogged. You can try running the print head utility a few more times. Clean the print heads by performing a head cleaning followed by printing a nozzle check pattern. A head cleaning and nozzle check pattern must be performed as a cycle. After printing a nozzle check pattern, examine the printed dot pattern. Each staggered horizontal and straight vertical line should be complete, with no gaps in the dot pattern. If there are gaps in the dot pattern, continue with another cycle. Perform up to 3 cycles if necessary. If that does not help then you can buy the print head cleaning kit from this site http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kea0.html But it will be tricky to use on a all-in-one. But if it's still under warranty why not let Epson deal with it. Wes.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Alan L (3/8/04 6:52 PM) | + / - | Thanks. I will. There is a "new"(?) one on the way. And I'll be sure to let you know how it all plays out.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by nietsni3 (3/22/04 8:39 PM) | + / - | i really dont wanna get a replacement, they said they will send a refurbished/used one for replacement. fvck, i bought it brand new and now they are sending me a used one. any suggestion??

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Alan L. (3/22/04 9:00 PM) | + / - | I got a refurbished/used one too, & it came with a paper jam & the yellow doesn't work. So now they're sending me a new yellow cartridge. If it doesn't work, am I going to be told to send this used one back for another reject?
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (3/23/04 9:11 AM) | + / - | nietsni3: If you want to get it repaired under the Epson Warranty, then dealing with Epson Company and their rules and regulations, is probably the only real choice that you have. You can always call the "Epson Customer Relations Department", at 1-562-276-1311 and deal directly with them. They also act as a type of complaint department, as well as handling the WHOLE UNIT EXCHANGES for customers with certain warranty claims. If anyone can help you with your complaint thats the department to talk too...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (3/23/04 9:16 AM) | + / - | Alan L: I seriously doubt that a new ink cartridge will actually help, so my guess is that Epson will have to send you another replacement printer. My guess would be that either there is an actual Hardware/Parts Failure, or of course a clogged Printhead Assembly. You can also read the reply that I sent to "nietsni3"...Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by MikeCox (3/26/04 7:02 AM) | + / - | I also had a CX5200 that was clogged. Purchased the unit in Sept 03. After 4 months of printing it started showing discolored lines in the printing. 2 weeks ago stopped printing black. I ran it through countless Head Cleanings cycles, even did a thorough print head cleaning but still no black. Called Epson, they sent another CX5200. It didn't work at all...nothing but blank paper. They then sent a 5400. It works. I sent the other 2 back...but before I did I tried another nozzle check on the original unit...it was then showing black but no blue... go figure! The next time I buy a printer, it won't be an Epson.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by hartless (3/28/04 8:39 AM) | + / - | My CX5200 quit printing all colors except magenta (which is streaked) after 13 months. Print quality began to decline over the course of about a week. This began as having to clean the heads every time I printed. I've gone through nearly US$100 in ink trying to clean the printheads (before I found this site). I have owned nothing but Epson in the past (4 printers over many years), as well as recommended various Epson printers to friends/colleagues. This is the last Epson I will own, and I will make sure that others know of my experience. I see a pattern emerging as to the timing of Epson printers ceasing to print. If anyone knows of a class-action suit that may be in the works, count me in.
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Chris G (4/11/04 12:40 AM) | + / - | My Epson stopped printing Magenta . We had bought a "cheap" replacement cartrige for black and magenta. The black leaked and bled and the magenta stopped. I will in the future use only Epson inks as , after reading many of Denny's replies, understand why Epson says to use only Epson inks. I will try the cleaning but have my doubts. Looks like it is time for a new printer. This printer had no problems until I tried the cheapo cartriges.
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Dennis (4/14/04 6:30 PM) | + / - | Chris, I have the same problem as you described. I thought that the cheap cartridges were the root cause. But now that I've read thru this discussion thread, perhaps it was just a coincidence. Whereas the non-Epson inks made it worse, perhaps the printheads would have failed anyway since I purchased the unit in Feb 2003. Denny Conway: if my best alternative is to get a new printer, do you know if the Epson CX5400 has the same printhead and/or print engine? Up until now, I have liked the performance my Epson CX5200, and feel bad that they only last for about 1 year.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (4/15/04 9:28 AM) | + / - | Dennis: I'm sorry, but I don't know much about any of the newer Multifunction Printers. About the only thing that I tell you is that the CX5400 uses different part numbers on its Main Board Assembly, Printer Mechanism, Carriage Assembly and Print Head Assembly. The CX5200 uses different part numbers, that do not cross reference, on at least those four assemblies...Denny Conway

 | Epson CX5200 nightmare by Lynn (4/18/04 4:51 PM) | + / - | I have been an Epson fan for years. My old dot matrix printer printed to almost laser quality, and worked for YEARS. My Epson CX5200 has been a DREAM since I bought it 1-1/2 years ago, and I recommended it to others. NOT ANYMORE. There was nothing gradual about when it stopped working - it just stopped. Now, everything is streaky, the colors are wrong, the black has gaps. Just as everyone else has posted here, multiple head cleanings do nothing. My printer has had very light use - I still consider it "new." I can't believe I will probably have to get a new one. Farewell, Epson.
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Dennis (4/20/04 10:50 AM) | + / - | As I've mentioned before, I love the performance of the Epson, as I gather from most of the comments in this website. I just shopped around for an Epson CX5400, and OfficeMax is offering an additional 1 or 2 year comprehensive (replacement if necessary) warranty for $20 and $35 respectively. Sounds like bargain insurance to me. Staples offers a 3-yr total for $50, but they might cover the use of non-Epson ink that they carry. Check it out.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 failure @ 13 months by Joe (4/29/04 5:51 AM) | + / - | Greetings... Surprise, Surprise! My CX5200 just gave up last night... it was printing perfectly, Cyan ran out, so I replaced it, then ALL colors would not print correctly. I cleaned nozzles over and over, then finally replaced black cartridge too... now NO black will print AT ALL! And guess what... my printer is 13 months old! Unbelievably I actually bought the 2 year warranty from CompUSA but it's starting to seem like an awful pattern here folks... I have a friend who is a class-action attorney ... do we have enough to start something here? Joe

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Mayur (4/29/04 1:01 PM) | + / - | My epson cx5200 ran out of black ink so I went and bought the whole set as some of the colours were getting low....and now it wont work (I only ever used epson cartridges). Magenta and cyan print but black and yellow are not working at all!!!! I feel like throwing my printer thru Epsons HQ windows as I spent nearly £150 on it. Wish I had never bought an epson...they will lose me as a customer if this doesnt get fixed properly. I will keep you guys posted as to what happens. Class-action suit sounds good

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (4/29/04 1:19 PM) | + / - | Mayur: If your CX5200 is still under its origional Factory Warranty, then Epson Company offers a "Whole Unit Exchange" here in the USA, to replace the defective unit. As you are not located in the USA, I cannot actually help you on what to do, to file a Warranty Claim thru Epson Company in your area. You might want to go to the Epson UK Technical Support web-site at http://www.epson.co.uk/support/ and check out your available options...Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Joe (5/2/04 2:55 PM) | + / - | I bought my Epson 5200 at CompUSA with a "2 yr TAP carry in replacement" warranty. This is the usual pain-in-the-@ warranty... NOWHERE in ANY CompUSA literature (including website) does it mention that you CAN'T just "carry in" your busted printer and walk out with a replacement. You FIRST have to call some 800 number that forwards to India, pretend to be listening to the script reader on the other end (I've been working with computers over 20 years... I think I can tell when a printer is BUSTED), and then wait 20 minutes for him to say... "your printer is broken my friend, return it to store for replacement". You then go to the store and are told it will be 24 - 48 hours before "approval" for the replacement comes from some outside office. Needless to say, I got logical about the issue with the mangaer, and I walked away with FULL ORIGINAL purchase money... turns out the newer Epson CX5400 is like $70 cheaper than I paid for the 5200... but I'm leary of another Epson... I've forwarded info about our 5200 problems to a class-action attorney... we'll see if he thinks it's worth pursuing (i.e. if it will make his firm lots of dough, and each of us $1.92). It never ends... J ;>

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Patti (5/3/04 10:16 AM) | + / - | Well, this is another tale to add to the saga. I also have a epson CX5200 that is no longer working. And of course after spending a hour on the phone trying to get help I find my warranty is expired with Epson and my extended 3yr warranty with Gateway will not cover a new printer head!! Only covers hardware...I ask what is hardware if not the head? They could not tell me, just the head is a consumable part of the printer and not covered under the warranty. Go figure. After reading the previous comments I only wonder if the thing is worth putting more money into to fix. I have only used the Epson inks in my printer, have gone through the cleaning process numerous times (20) and can't get it to work. Up to the point now that I have numerous white lines through my copies of pictures. wahhhhh I give up!!!!! I have had the printer only 16 months!! Sign me up too Joe!
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (5/3/04 1:26 PM) | + / - | Patti: Its of course possible that may actually have a Hardware/Parts problem, or possibly even a bad/failing ink cartridge, but no way to really know. You may want to e-mail Epson Company and ask them if the Print Head Assembly on your CX5200 is a consumable part or not. I work for an Epson Authorized Service Dealer and to my knowledge the Print Heads on the Epson Ink Jet Printers are designed to last the life of the printer and generally not thought of as a consumable part. You can e-mail the "Epson Technical Support Department", for possible help or advice, at www.epson.com and then click-on "Proceed With E-Mail". They state on their web-site, that they "will respond via e-mail within 1 business day"...Good Luck! Denny Conway...P.S. If the print head assembly is actually bad, then its normally not economical to replace, as you can usually buy a new printer cheaper.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Blaine (5/5/04 9:38 AM) | + / - | Yes, I also would be interested in a class-action if I can't get this same clog problem resolved. In my case, I print black ink regularly but color printouts sparingly, perhaps only two or three times a month. I was just out of warranty (of course) when I was starting to replace my color cartridges for the first time. One by one as I inserted the new Epson color cartridges they would not work. Ironically, every time I ran the cleaning utility, the nozzle check would show LESS color ink, until after four or five cleanings, when no color ink shows through nozzle check at all. What's going on here? Design problem? If so, is it possible to get Epson to do a selective recall for units showing this problem? If so, can anybody advise me as to a successful replacement procedure for an out-of-warranty CX5200?

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Melissa (5/9/04 9:29 AM) | + / - | This site is unbelievable! Guess what, I too have a clogged printhead on my Epson CX5200. And mine happened at 14 months. WOW, 2 months out of warrenty! Amazing how all these stories sound so similar. Mine is the yellow, won't print any at all now. At first it was printing a broken black line instead of yellow. Changed yellow cartridge 3 times ($14 US each time) and still nothing. Guess this is my way of saying sign me up too!

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Mark (5/14/04 1:42 PM) | + / - | My Epson 5200 failed at about 6 months -- streaky, gaps, and not printing yellow and magenta at all. Service folks had me replace ALL cartridges ($60 plus), which did not solve the problem. I must admit they were very nice about sending a replacement. The replacement (seems to be a refurbished model) arrived yesterday. On the first try it did not print yellow or magenta!

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Glenn (5/14/04 2:20 PM) | + / - | Add another CX5200 to the list. exact same symptoms as so many others here have reported. Afer I replaced the black cart. it stopped printing black altogether. silly me, i assumed a bad cart. - bought another one ($33 later thank you) and found the same thing. the printer has had light usage. it's 14 months old (seemingly the "magic" age). e-mailed epson help but just an automated reply. Having just spent a total of almost $100 on ink i see they're selling the '5400 for $129 now. truly the age of the throwaway printer... shoulda bought an hp ...

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Adnan (5/16/04 12:50 PM) | + / - | Add yet another CX5200 to the list. Its been about 16 months since I bought my printer and one fine day my black stopped printing. So I bought a new cartridge. Did multiple head cleanings (over 25 at this point) and still nothing. In fact, the more head cleanings I did, the worse the nozzle pattern became. In fact now I've replaced all the cartidges and I have almost nothing being printed. This is ridiculous that Epson expects us to buy a new printer every year or so. I've probably printed less than 200 pages on it. Please add me to the class action lawsuit list against them as well. Adnan

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by DannyD2004 (5/16/04 9:55 PM) | + / - | Bye Bye Epson... I bet I won't be that last one, but add yet another CX5200 to that list... Oh yeah, same symptoms, and is not printing anything period. Hmm, and its 14 months old, that "magic" age. Whats up with this? My last printer was a Stylus Color 600, it worked for about 4 years with no problems.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by 5200Debacle (5/17/04 6:26 AM) | + / - | My 5200 worked very nicely until shortly after my first cartridge replacement. Symptoms are indentical to those described in most of these threads. The unit is barely over a year old and receives only moderate use. It also sounds like repair efforts have marginal effectiveness. I really don't want to fool around with temporary fixes. What a shame. It looks brand new, plus, to be economical I bought the 2-pack of black - the entire OEM ink cartridge markets seem to be a royal scam. Would anyone out there like my new black cartridge, and my 3 aftermarket color cartridges? You can have 'em. Just pay for shipping. I'm going with a different mfr printer. Anything has got to be better than this mess. What's a class action suite going to get you (us),... a 100 bucks?!? How about a recall?

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Chris White (5/21/04 12:28 PM) | +2 + / - | Dodgy / No printing is easy to fix. forget kits. put the cartriges in the "exchange" position so you can remove the ink tanks. pull the power lead out the back so the holders cant go anywhere. use a screwdriver to remove the heads from under the tanks, this shouldnt be too taxing! leave to soak in about 1cm deep of foam cleaner (used for cleaning computers etc. leave for about an hour. this will dissolve any blockage.) make sure vacuum pump tube is attached under ink tray (white thing where the cartridges normally park, slide it to the right and tube should be connected underneath, but often comes off) When finished soaking and checking vacuum tube, dab heads to dry with absorbant cloth (nothing with bits of lint etc that can come off!) Rifit all together. turn on printer without cartridges and then when its finished messing about do the usual cartridge exchange, replacing the original cartridges. Wait to charge and away you go! Hope this helps! Chris

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by underdog (5/21/04 1:17 PM) | + / - | I've been seeing on the last few C8x printers an IIRC a 5x00 printer (not sure which exact model) that the problem with not printing is the vacumn hose comes disconnected from the caping station, have to go in from under the printer mechanism and reattach the hose and it starts working again, and I use a small zip strip to hold it in place.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Nancy (5/21/04 1:38 PM) | + / - | Add yet another CX5200 to the list. Its been about 15 months since I bought my printer . I did the multiple head cleanings and still nothing. In fact, the more head cleanings I did, the worse the nozzle pattern became. I guess I won't try the new cartriges, after reading all these same complaints. It doesn't seem like the model CX5200 was out long before they came out with the CX5400 which has a different way of dispensing the ink. It would be nice, if Epson had figured out about the bad ink head design, and put out a new model, that they would have a recall on this CX5200. I will probably just buy a new printer at this point. Thank you all for helping me to make up my mind and stop wasting my time.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Tom Murphy (5/22/04 9:47 PM) | + / - | Well I too have decided that my CX5200 will have to go to the dust bin... but I will buy a CX5400 as a replacement. I have several ink cartridges still on hand... and frankly, I liked the CX5200 (until the yellow ink clogged!) QUESTION: Do I need to reinstall all the various software packages and drivers and all that I am sure will come with the new CX5400 or can I just plug it in and assume that the 5200 and 5400 drivers etc. are essentially the same? Anyone have any experience on this?? Tom

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Wes (5/22/04 11:53 PM) | + / - | It's always best to install the new drivers. You might even want to uninstall the old prinrer drivers just to make a cleaner install. Wes.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by JB (5/23/04 11:50 AM) | + / - | Unbelievable, My CX5200 just clogged. The yellow and Cyan don't work and the black is bleeding. Get this....(drum roll) just 15 months after the date of purchase. What gives??? Does anybody recommened another brand that is problem free?
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by JB (5/23/04 11:55 AM) | + / - | Tom Murphy: It is always best to uninstall the current software that is in your PC right now and make a fresh installation of your new CX5400. Good Luck.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Tom M (5/23/04 1:35 PM) | + / - | I just got home from OfficeDepot where I bought the CX5400. It is on special sale for - get this - $111.04 --- because they just started selling the CX6400 !! I asked the difference between the 5400 and 6400 and the answer was "there is a media slot" on the 6400 so you can put your camera media directly into the printer. I'll stick with the CX5400 as I already have a ScanDisk media reader attached to my PC. Any ideas what to do with the 5200 other than use it as a boat anchor? Tom (thanks all, I will uninstall and re-install the software as suggested)

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Ed (5/24/04 8:51 PM) | + / - | Well well well Add another to the list. I purchased my CX5200 on May 10 2003 from Office Depot.- It failed last week - literally 1 week after the warranty expired. I'm in Canada - anyone have any idea whether there is any recourse in this country.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Eric (5/25/04 1:39 AM) | + / - | Sorry Ed. you are screwed. Mine died 11 months into it, and the replacement just went out a couple of days ago (4 months)when I am in the process of printing out maps for Hiking on the applachian this weekend. (memorial day), what dumb luck. I too am stuck will lots of expensive ink in hand and am thinking about getting the cheapest CX possible so I could use all those inks I have within the 1 year warrenty time. I will soon to be known amongest all my friends as the "free photo" dude. BTW, I got the cleaning solution from here, soaking it now ... but I seriouly doubt it would help. Will keep you guys posted.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by eric (5/25/04 5:29 AM) | + / - | Well, after 8 hours of soaking and re-soaking, it still didn't work. Used the alternative method and inject it top down, the fluid seems to go thru, but still it won't print. The injector that came with the kit doesn't fit too well with the 5200's heads. In any case, good luck for whoever else that wants to try unclogging their heads. Just the thought of going out there after work, and buy another Epson so I could use all my expensive inks boils me. Never been mad-er

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Tom M (5/25/04 5:40 AM) | + / - | You would think that with all these units, all going bad shortly AFTER the warranty runs out... we'd have a class action suit going with Epson by now...
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Gary Otte (5/25/04 8:30 PM) | + / - | Well, mine's dead at 14 months. Same thing. Trying to soak the head now but not with much luck yet.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (5/26/04 9:10 AM) | + / - | You might want to check the information on the Compass Micro web-site, on the CX-5200 blank or fading output problem, do to the cleaning station tube coming unplugged from the bottom of the capping assembly. Check the information and pictures off the Compass Micro web-site, at http://www.compassmicro.com/tip_detail.cfm?TechTipID=23 ...Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by yz313 (5/26/04 5:34 PM) | + / - | Here comes another victim! My cx5200 cloged last week. Still under warranty. Replacement came on Monday. I was glad it was working. Just felt lucky. Unfortunately today, when the power button on, it showed me an error message--Printer error, contact blah, blah, blah... Turned it off, tried to turn on again. Never response... I am requesting another replacement. Will they charge the second replacement? Forgot to ask the rep. Is it possible to let EPSON recall cx5200 since it is really a defect product?

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Charlie B (5/26/04 7:45 PM) | + / - | add another purchased 3/29/03 working purfectly up to 5/25/04 symptoms as above prints blank sheets after I changed all 4 of the ink cartridges. However,http://www.compassmicro.com/tip_detail.cfm?TechTipID=23 is the answer. Follow their instructions. However, no need to take the printer apart. One hour of patience and two needle nose pliers, one of which should be of the 90 degree variety, a flashlight, a small alligater clip to hold the capping assembly against the wall of the printer (it is spring loaded)and you will have just enough room to slide the clear tube with the blue/green stripe back onto the capping assembly. There is a build up of ink over 12 to 15 months that makes the tube slip off (and on) very easily. Hence, the similarily of all of the above posted problems. Good luck.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by lparish (5/27/04 3:27 PM) | + / - | Lasted 13 months, goes through the montions, but no blank. Sad part is, i work for the place I bought mine at, and am also fixing another 5200 for a scanner error that's cronic from what i read. Am getting a replacement on one, stuck with this one. Trying to take the print head out of the printer, and use some tricks that work on the HP's i work on, time will tell. Have worked with and on printers for about a decade, bout ready to call it quits with any and all inkjet printers, they're just built too cheap to be worth it, either the ink cost more than the unit, or the unit 'breaks' after the warranty is up... too much plastic. My rule of thumb for printers (i work on hp, epson, samsung, oki, panasonic, and cannon) is don't buy inkjet, go laser (unless you just have to have color), and never get the 'bottom of the line', it's too many plastic gears. Bout ready to dust off the old impact printer and give the finger to hp/cannon/epson for all the inkjets, my impact does color... kinda.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Cynthia (5/27/04 11:40 PM) | + / - | Denny Conway and Charlie B are absolutely correct! I was ready to pull the new ink cartridges out and reluctantly head on down to the Office Depot to replace my CX5200 with a CX5400 (so I could still use the new ink cartridges!)when I read their postings. I'm not a fix-it type person - actually a 50 yr old woman - BUT - I work with medical instruments in my day job! So, I found that an old alligator forcep and a sharply curved kelly forcep along with a hairbin to hold the capping assembly against the wall of the printer and a small adjustable head flashlight worked well - 25 min later I had the tube back on the capping assembly (it looked sort of like a video I saw once on vascular surgery). The hard part after that was cleaning up the mess - ink had sprayed everywhere with the tube off. Used some alcohol and Q-tips for that and pressed the "Head Cleaning" button alternately with the "Nozzle Check" function about a zillion times to clear the clog that had developed. After 90 minutes of that, hey presto! my printer is functioning well again. And I thought it was a gonner! Thanks, guys.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Hymack (5/28/04 9:51 AM) | + / - | Had one replaced in january, and again it fails when I change the black ink catridge! Stupid Epson. Can anyone recommend another multifunction printer that is reliable? AND preferably one that doesn't use the color ink every print cycle to clean the heads and waste that ink for nothing. thx

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Blaine (5/28/04 12:25 PM) | + / - | I went with a replacement 5200 before I learned from this website that this printhead problem I experienced earlier was so endemic to this Epson model. (Funny. Before I replaced it with another, I called & asked more than one tech rep at Epson if anyone else had this problem and they acted like I was the only one.) Now I'm worried that this problem is simply going to happen again. Is there any operational practice we naive owners of still-working 5200s can incorporate that make this problem less likely to occur? Blaine

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Jason (5/29/04 12:42 AM) | + / - | I too was about to add another epson to the scrap heap. I got it because it's one of the few multifunctions that will work with Linux. I got it for $5 off Ebay and now I know why. Right out the box nothing but blank pages. I noticed the tube on the capping was off. I put it back and at least I can get B&W now. Don't think I'll adventure with Epson again though. If I didn't love my Mrs. so much I'd steal the HP deskjet back from her.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Anonymous (5/29/04 5:45 AM) | -1 + / - | I've had one for over 12 months, and after some clogging problems, seem to have solved them by sticking to Epson inks or JetTec inks. However, I've had 2 replacement printers under the warranty - first time I was getting a blue tinge round the edge whne scanning, and the replacement wouldn't connect to the PC, so they brought out a third one. My biggest gripe though is that if you try to print anything on Glossy paper in Copy mode, and select Glossy as the paper quality, the white background prints as grey. When I told Epson about this they asked if I was using Epson paper!! (No fear - not at their price!)Just some cheap old Kodak paper. Also if you want to copy on to acetate sheet for OHP's there's no guidance about what option to choose. Epson Help Desk said that there was if I printed from the PC, which isn't a lot of use if you're copying! So I just select Plain Paper Normal (or Fine for photos) for everything now.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Glenn (5/29/04 5:48 AM) | +1 + / - | Kudos to Denny Conway for his posting!! Re-attaching the tube solved my problem, and I suspect that's the problem we've all been discussing. With the right tools and some patience you can make the repair without disassembling the unit, however being somewhat dexterity challenged (and liking to take things apart) i opted to do some disassembly. Took advantage of the opportunity to clean things up inside (there was a LOT of ink in there!) Thanks again for the great pointer!

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Bomber (5/30/04 1:15 PM) | + / - | Bought the 5200 a year ago for independent color cartridges and medium-quality photo copying. Clogged after second ink change; Epson sent a new one under warranty but admonished me for using non-Epson ink. Replacement was DOA so they sent a third unit. Worked OK until now. Stuck with Epson ink, but at last change of black (why is it always on the cartridge change?!?) black and then gradually colors stopped working. This site was very informative. I looked for the tube (it's still connected, so that's not it) and soaked the head (cleaned out nicely but didn't help) per various posts here. Unfortunately, none of it worked. Now I have a machine that scans well but won't print or copy. What a waste of time and money. I won't buy another Epson, but what instead is most unclear.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by JB (5/30/04 3:07 PM) | + / - | Ok called EPSON they heard my complaint and sent me a new CX 5400 to replace the 5200. Get this the letter said they a currently not manufacturing the 5200 model and are sending me the 5400 instead, I just installed it and already not to impressed. It needed a print head alingment right off the bat!! We will see how long this 5400 will last. Anyone else have the same thing happen to them???

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by DINO D (5/31/04 8:44 PM) | + / - | Me and my friend bought each an Epson cx5200 printer just over a year ago. Both had the yellow and red and blue colg up, the black ink was fine and the only one that was not Epson durabrite ink. Both printers clogged right after the warranty ran out. I ran into another person in Best Buy that was buying a Canon printer and I overheard him tell the salesman that his one year old cx5200 was all clogged up and he gave up on cleaning it. I have an idea that the problem is the ink. I ask myself this question, why do all the newer Epson printers like the rx500 and the rx600 switched back to the dye based ink? Why don't they use the durabrite ink? If the durabite ink is waterproof when it dries (I have seen it displayed in a water bottle at Comp USA) what happens when it dries on a printhead? I have had epson printers in the past and I used cheap ink from China without ever having a clog. I tell you it must be the durabrite ink that is bad and Epson is not admitting it made a mistake with pigmented ink.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Adam (6/3/04 5:49 AM) | + / - | My CX5200 also failed about a month ago with clogged heads in exactly the same manner and timing as everybody else. I just checked my 'capper' tube and unfortunatly it was connected properly.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Melissa (6/3/04 1:24 PM) | + / - | After seeing the posting about the cleaning station tube, I figured, what the heck lets give it a look. Well, it still appeared connected. So I gave my husband free rein to disassemble the printer and work it over. Much to my surprise, he was able to get it working a little better. He looked at the web site suggested by Denny, moved some things around, did some cleaning up of ink and after about 10 or more head cleanings the yellow started to appear very faintly. Better than what I was getting before! I also purchased one of the chip re-setters for the ink cartridges because he removed them and I didn't want to throw them out since they were still full of ink. I re-set the cartridges and I am up an running again, for a while anyway I guess.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Larry (6/4/04 4:02 PM) | + / - | I bought my CX5200 online in March of 2003, and it now no longer works. I found this board after doing a Google "Epson CX5200" search, trying to get a clue as to what I can do to make it function again. I had a few problems with the original Epson cartridges, but they resolved themselves. I tried some cheap cartridges for the first replacement, and they also worked OK after a little coaxing. Despite the permanence of the Durabrite inks, I had some concerns about using a pigment based ink. I'm also a fountain pen enthusiast, and I know how pigment based inks can clog up the flow on a good fountain pen. So, I decided to try the dye based inks. Now, on the third reload, only the black and the red works. From reading this long string, it looks as if my best option is to make this POS a dumpster snack, and go back to HP.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by DINO D (6/4/04 9:31 PM) | + / - | I solved my problem with my 2 epson cx5200. I donated them to purple heart and I'm getting a Canon multipass MP360. There is a $30.00 rebate that will bring the cost to $99.00. My son bought one and it works better than my Epson ever did. The original cartiges cost $7.00 black and $16.00 color, that's $22.00 a ink change instead of a $70.00 epson ink change. If you still like epson Staples is going to have a sale on the cx5400 for $99.00 this coming week. Check their website.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Rob Louis (6/9/04 8:09 PM) | + / - | I too have fallen victim - a second time. Looked at the cleaning tube this time and it's securely connected. The first printer was replaced by Epson so they knew a problem existed. Not sure what to do about this second clog. I may call them and complain and see if I can get another printer or at least a coupon/voucher/whatever for another printer. However, I'm not sure if I want to get another Epson considering all the problems with the 5200. Needless to say this has been a verrrrry frustrating experiance. Epson - what's the deal?!?

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by william v (6/12/04 12:13 PM) | + / - | OK GUYS YOU GOT TO HELP ME .... I JUST GOT OUT OF A CLOGGED DISPOSABLE CANNON PRINTER, THINKING ABOUT GETTING AN EPSON CX5400 AFTER KNOWING WELL CANNON, LEXMARK, HP, ALTHOUGH HP WILL BE ALWAYS BETTER... IS REALLY EXPENSIVE WHEN IT COMES TO INKS .. IF YOU PUT THE EXTRA $15 A MO FOR THE INK IN A YEAR YOU'LL HAVE THE MONEY AGAIN TO GET A NEW PRINTER..,SO.... THAT MAKES ME THINK... i HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE WITH PRINTERS AND ALL OF THEM SOONER OR LATER WILL DIE.... SO DOES ANYBODY HAVE A REAL RECOMENDATION FOR ME ABOUT THIS PRINTER (THE NEW CX 5400)
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Anand A (6/13/04 1:03 PM) | + / - | Ooh.. you guys are gonna like my little story here: So I bought an EPSON (they insist on putting their name in all caps for no reason) Stylux CX5200 last August at CompUSA. I didn't get the extended warranty. Just last month my printer died. It would print completely blank pages of black, but i could get streaks of blue and yellow still. Interestingly, when I called Epson, they thought my printer was out of warranty (based on some obviously inaccurate information they had about my printer's serial number). It seems I got lucky-- if it's true that they engineer their printers to die just after the warranty, they mistimed this one, 'cuz it died less than a year after I bought it. Anyway, after making me buy a new black ink cartridge just to prove that the printer wasn't working, they sent me a CX5400. So, I opened up this (refurbished) CX5400 printer and tried to print. It worked like a charm--just like the CX5200 did for the first few months. I also discovered that they had left the yellow packing slip out of the replacement printer's box, so I didn't have the necessary information to return the original printer. I sure hope my credit card doesn't get charged in the meantime... Anyway, upon further inspection of the printer, I discovered that the refurbisher at the Epson factory actually LEFT OUT a part of the printer--the mechanism that's supposed to detect when you raise the scanner unit. Although this part wasn't extremely necessary, I was peeved and decided to call Epson (long-distance) again to get the printer replaced and get the packing slip sent to me. So, Epson sent me a "new" (refurbished) CX5400 printer. This time, I turned it on and put in cartridges. The printer charged (aka wasted) the ink, and shortly after displayed "printer error..." So, I called Epson again. They're sending me a new one. This will be my third replacement printer, which I imagine will die after a couple of months if it isn't already dead on arrival. (Also, a day later, the "packing slip" for the first replacement printer arrived. I thought they would get this part right, but I guess I gave them too much credit. They sent me another UPS return label, instead. Guess I'm making another call to Epson on Monday.) I really find it pretty funny how I was assured by the tech rep that this is an extremely rare occurrence. Obviously he hasn't visited this site. Oh well... at least I'm getting $216 of free ink out of the whole deal (new ink comes with every replacement printer). That's not bad considering I paid $100 for the printer in the first place. For that matter, I hope the third replacement is broken too. Sign me up for the class-action suit, Joe.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by william v (6/14/04 2:39 PM) | + / - | OK I'M CONVINCED.... THIS PRINTER IS A POS... DOES ANYBODY KNOW ANY "NOT THAT BAD" PRINTER OF THE SAME TYPE.....???? (MULTIFUNCTION)
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by DINO D (6/14/04 3:17 PM) | + / - | Stop messing around with that dead printer. I had 2 and right after a year they both clogged up. I gave mine to purple heart and I'm sure they will toss them when they see that they are clogged up. Ask yourself why are the durabrite printers being sold at super discounts? Staples had them last week for $99.00 and Comp USA has them this week for that same price. The next one to be discounted will be the cx6400 by the fall. The new printers like the rx500 and rx600 do not use durabrite ink, why? If you want a good replacement for the cx5400 try the Canon multipass 360. It works better than my epson did and it's cheaper to buy ink for it. You can buy Chinese ink on ebay for $13.00 for a 5-black and a 5-color bundle. Another plus is that Canon does not have chipped cartridges. They are just ink tanks that anyone can refill.Buy the ebay ink, it's cheaper than refilling your own. The Comp USA website also has a $30.00 rebate on that moder untill July. That brings the cost to $99.00

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Scott (6/15/04 6:58 AM) | + / - | Add my CX5200 also. I'm in the UK and bought mine in September 2002 after carefully sifting through the opposition, I settled on the Epson. About 5 months ago it started automatically doing de-clogs on the print mechanism before outputting any print. A bit weird I thought to myself. Then about 3 weeks ago the black stopped working midway through a page, not to say it instantly stopped working, but more like it looked like smudged mascara where it cocked up, then faded into nothing. Ink tank was still at 50% and was the original cartridge. Fearing that the cartridge was the problem, I swapped it for a brand new black cart, same problem, still no black. Checked the posts made earlier in this thread about the connector hose coming off, it's still on, in fact mine is held in place with metal clips so as to avoid the 'slip-off' problem. Must have been made like that at the factory. I'm only a very light printer user, I use the scanner far more (won't get into the crapness of the scanner drivers that stop working for no reason). Overall, not happy. I paid £220 when this came out and to only get a year's use (or about 3 hours if you boil down the actual time it's been running) is pretty galling. Add my name to the list.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Beatriz (6/15/04 11:30 AM) | + / - | After just over a year, my Epson CX5200 is no longer printing either. I'm very dissapointed since I loved it from day one. Ran out of magenta, so went to the store, bought all new cartriges, then...nothing! Sounds like it's printing, but I get a blank page. Tried (as many of you have)nozzle check, head cleaning, etc. Funny thing - the ink levels have dropped to 70%. Where'd the ink go if not onto the print page?! Will try some of the recommended fixes I've read on this site. Thanks! Will follow-up.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Jason (6/16/04 2:47 PM) | + / - | Ok, where do we stand on the class action!!! I'm ready to sign up. I bought two 5200s at the same time. Both clogged within 18 mths. I've spent more on ink carts trying to get it to work than I did on the original printer. I'll check the tube as other suggest, but this is crazy. Something isn't right when all of these huge printers (not so landfill friendly) are dying so quickly. I just told my wife ... it is the LAST Epson I own. I'm going with the Phazer with solid ink. I might keep the 5200 around as a scanner, but Epson print heads being build INTO the printer is a mistake.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Edward (6/16/04 4:45 PM) | + / - | Sign me up for the Class Action Suit, Joe. It's been less than 6 months of use and it's already dead, after trying to replace ink for the first time. At first, I thought it was a bad set of ink so I went out to buy a second set. It's now printing a blank page, and I can't return both set of ink after it's opened. Also tossed my original receipt for the printer. Then I searched and found this site. Mad as Hell! Gonna use my CX5200 for target practice this weekend. Epson Sucked!! The durabrite ink, (80 years and no fade) and their commercials lured me to buy this piece of crap. Can anyone recommend a better comparable quality printer and ink? Thanks.
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Jason (6/16/04 6:05 PM) | + / - | The tube was off and I was able to reattach (without taking apart the printer). Cleaned it five times and we're back up and running. Test pattern went from only black and cyan to 99% on all four inks. The design of the tube is clearly a major flaw and worth a recall to replace. Perhaps a petition on http://www.petitiononline.com.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Steve (6/23/04 10:18 AM) | + / - | Like everybody else, I had owned my CX5200 for 15 months and the black stopped working. I just recently changed all the colors and after numerous cleaning jobs, none of the colors will work at all now. I will try the cleaning kit, but I feel a lost cause coming in. I had always been a fan of Epson, but after this and reading everybody eles's story I will not be buying from them again. Epson are obviously a complete scam, and Iwould like to think that something should be done about this.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Marcia (6/23/04 8:14 PM) | + / - | Wow! I'm amazed at all of this. In the middle of a big project, 14 months after purchasing, the CX5200 just up and quit printing the black, right after changing from an epson cartridge to an epson cartridge. I told the tech person at epson that I knew what the problem was so would I really have to pay the $9.90 fee. He consented to just tell me what to do without charging - I should run the head cleaning cycle 9 times in a row and if that didn't work to call an authorized dealer. Well, of course it didn't work. It will cost at least $85 and 3-5 days at the repair shop, so that's not an option. I signed on to search for help, figuring it's a lost cause now, so I might as well try fixing it myself. This sounds like a class action suit to me, so if anyone gets one started, let me know. Tomorrow, I call epson to see what they are doing about this big problem they have. Then I will call Tekserve here in NYC to see what they will do for me, since I bought it on their recommendation.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Rob (6/24/04 8:46 PM) | +1 + / - | Although Epson denies there is a problem, there is a fix for this problem on the C82 (Same printer as used in the CX5200) that seems to work. The fix is at http://www.compassmicro.com/tip_detail.cfm?TechTipID=23 Warning: this may require you to partially disassemble your printer.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Joe (6/25/04 6:27 AM) | + / - | I sent the info and link to this site to a class-action lawyer a while ago (he is already working on another case for me involving auto warranty), but he never got back to me on the merits of an Epson case. If the law firm doesn't see potentional for big cash return (for them) they of course will not be interested.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Linda (6/25/04 11:53 AM) | + / - | I have owned 13 Epson printers. I presently have a 640 and 740 that work perfect. I purchased this CX5200 (a little over a year ago, LOL) because I needed copier and scanning capabilities. I like most of the posts started having problems when I changed ink cartridge. I have checked the hose it's in place, I am on my 3rd day of trying the cleaning solvent, I have put 1cc of cleaning solvent in the cartridges, I am still getting almost blank pages, totally blank on a nozzle check..I have ordered the CX5400 should be here in a couple of days, at least I can use the same ink..I will post back if my methods are successfull..
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Anonymous (6/25/04 12:51 PM) | + / - | BUYERS BEWARE!!!!! I too have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM!!! My CX5200 is a little over a year old. It has always printed very well with very good quality ... until day before yesterday. It ran out of black ink. I replaced the black cartridge and now it prints nothing but Cyan. I have run numerous head cleanings, reseated the cartridges, re-installed the software, and it still ... prints nothing but cyan. Since it all started with the new black ink cartridge, I took it back to Staples and exchanged it with another one (thinking it may be defective). That did not work. I decided to check out this web site and was SHOCKED at everyone that is having the exact same issue. That can NOT be a coincidence ... can it???? Also ... to the people who are considering buying their new printer from CompUSA ... BEWARE!!! I am a former employee (Technical Manager) of CompUSA so I know the "ins and outs" of their business. I'm not saying do not buy from them because they sometimes have good deals on things ... BUT ... do NOT think that the TAP replacement plan that the salesman is so insistant on is a "good deal". It is not! They will tell you that "all you have to do is bring it in for a replacement". That is what they are trained to tell you. Reality is this ... your "replacement" is judged on what your printer is worth or what it costs now(if it is not discontinued ... which it probably will be if it is close to being out of warranty( NOT WHAT YOU PAID FOR IT. You will NOT get a instant replacement and will have to wait until either the manufacturer (same with all printer manufacturers)or corporate says "replace it". Which may be several days. In addition ... if your printer has been discontinued, it will be replaced with a printer that HAS ALL THE SAME FEATURES even if it costs $100 less than what you paid for your original. DO NOT BE FOOLED. The repacement "warranty" is garbage. They are there to make money. And those salesmen are pressured (tremendously) to sell this TAP "warranty" because that is pure profit. That is why they try to make it sound so great. I left because I did not believe in lying to my customers ... and that is exactly what they expect you to do. Also ... stay away from carrying your printer in for service ... flat rate is $99.97 and 9 out of 10 times they can't fix it ... but you still have to pay for it. Any printer under $150.00 is considered "disposible". Spend your $99.97 on your new printer. So ... buyers beware!!!!!

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Andy F (6/27/04 11:15 PM) | + / - | Mine originally stopped printing certain colours while using Epson ink, but managed to get it working with a "clone" cartridge. Now all three colours have stopped (thankfully black is hanging in there). Phoned Epson Canada, as printer is still (just) under warranty, and they told me that using after-market cartridges may have voided my warranty. Does anyone know if that is legally correct, or just an excuse they like to use? I thought I read somewhere on-line that a company cannot use that is an excuse to wriggle out of a warranty (in Canada at least). If it is true, and I swap all my generic cartridges for pricey Epson ones before I return it, does anyone know if they can check any kind of log within the printer to see if I have been using generic ink in the past? Thx!
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Anonymous (6/28/04 6:21 AM) | + / - | not sure about the log, but i don't think they're legally allowed to say your warranty has been voided based on the cartridges you used tell them if they deny you the replacement, you'll sue. that'll get em to listen.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Anonymous (6/28/04 7:42 AM) | + / - | I have the only printing cyan problem. I was hoping that the tube fix would work for me but, the tube is connected so now I don't know what to do.
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Anonymous (6/28/04 8:16 AM) | + / - | I've been reading about some people having success with the "tube" fix... and other's that have the problem and say the tube is connected. Perhaps those who have a connected "tube" but still no printing-- can the tube be clogged? What is this mystery tube connected to? A pump of some sort? What's at the other end? Perhaps the tube is disconnected at the far end, or the pump is not working. Regardless, it is obvious Epson had a serious design flaw with this one (the 5200). As mentioned above, I got mine swapped with a new 5400 at CrampUSA (after getting loud about their BS "replacement" warranty). Hope the 5400 holds up... Joe

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by DINO D (6/28/04 8:46 AM) | + / - | As I said before, it's not the machine it's the ink. All the newer epson printers do not use durabrite inks. If the ink dosen't run under water imagine what happens when it dries on your printhead. The generic cartiges at least are water based and can be cleaned off with warm water. I lost two cx5200 right after my year was up and now my father is starting to get the same symptons before the death clog comes for his printer. If you have a printer that uses durabrite ink and it still works get rid of it on ebay while you still can because it will clog up and you will have no choice but to throw it away like I did.
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Rod Hazell (7/1/04 4:57 PM) | + / - | Add another victim to the list. The troubles are just beginning. This site has given me three little rays of hope: the loose pipe check, the free software download of the SSC Service Utility, and removal and soaking of the heads. Who knows, perhaps it will still be working next year! I use generic cartridges. The CX5200 does not seem to be a reliable design in the printhead area. This is a shame. Can you guess which make of printer I will not be buying next time round?
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Fleur12 (7/1/04 7:33 PM) | + / - | Same problem - barely used my Epson...after replacing the ink cartridges for the first time, it stopped working. will only spit out blank pages. called epson. the printer just went out of warranty. epson basically blamed me by saying that i must have been leaving the printer on when i wasn't using it!

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by JANE (7/2/04 12:09 PM) | + / - | Mines failed on me just 4 days ago.. I've had it for 14 months and it clogged... so basically I'm stuck here with a piece of dump. I have two ways to get this over with... one: try to unclog that bitch, or two: throw her out and get a new printer... I'll do both... if I can unclog that then I'll keep it and take pics and stuff and post up the good works... if it doesn't work I'll let you guys know. Epson should do a recall on their lastest machines using the durabrite ink... that's what cuzing all the problem... plus the printer head clogging up when you replace ink... it doesn't matter if you use generic or oem epson ink... its EPSONS PROBLEM and they should fix it!
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by JANE (7/3/04 12:03 AM) | + / - | Well here's the heads up... I ended throwing it in the trash can... I spent 4 hours cleaning that sucker... taking it apart... and putting it together ... my younger brother offers to help and strips part of the plastic thingy (he tried screwing the wrong screws in the wrong place)... So now its in the trash can. Not only was the CX5200 poorly design, the Durabrite ink didn't help much either. The tubes that I cleaned out were all clogged up with ink stones. Its weird to say how some people say there's no sponge pad in the higher models... but mines did have it. There was even a extra large compartment with those foam like sponage. It's ideally for soaking up running/extra/leaking ink. Two main tubes I tried clearing out. The first one was easy... I think it was the end hose gets extra leaking ink from print head to dispose at the bottom reserve sponge pad area. The second one I cleaned out was a bitch to get to... and this is the one that has the extra smaller sponge area for it. My print head was clogged, both tubes were clogged... needless to say these higher model epson 3 in 1 multifunction printer should be recalled. Sign me up for the complaint!

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Dan (7/4/04 6:07 AM) | + / - | Although my CS5200 clogged and broke and I was able to fix it, I am not happy with the printer. I found the hose was off on the cleaning unit as mentioned above: http://www.compassmicro.com/tip_detail.cfm?TechTipID=23 I had to dis-assemble the printer and after about 2 hours I finally got the hose attached to the cleaning unit stem, what a pain in the rear (not to mention back!) After attaching the hose, I still had blank pages. I then used a paper towel and cleaned the foam and all around the cleaning unit.. Then I had to run the head cleaning a few times. Finally the printer is printing. Black and blue are printing fine, red has streaks and I dont have yellow yet. Maybe after a few more cleanings it might print. I may remove the yellow cartridge and clean the nozzle like I did the others. The major flaw is a missing clamp on the cleaning unit hose! Dan

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Melissa (7/7/04 5:12 AM) | + / - | This is crazy!! I also have had my CX5200 for a little over a year and the same thing happened to me!!! Not only did I have to pay $10 to talk to someone that could only tell me to contact a local dealer, I then payed $30 to have it 'professionally' cleaned. That, of course, did not work either. EPSON sucks! And P.S... EPSON, get an 800 number for technical support!!!!

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by mjsm (7/7/04 6:14 AM) | + / - | I want in on this class action suit if it materializes! Same problem as above! Just a few weeks after the warranty expired, I started to get blank pages. Tried the cleaning solution kit. I'll check the vaccuum tube thing tonight. I used to have a Stylus 600 and it was great. I love Epson print quality but this hassle is just not worth it. Now I'm switching to HP!
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Anonymous (7/7/04 6:29 AM) | + / - | Turns out Epson does have an 800 number. Give this a shot next time if you want to put it on their bill for once: 1-800-533-3731

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Ron (7/8/04 4:43 PM) | + / - | I cannot believe this is happening. I bought my printer in June 2003, changed my black and cyan cartridges last week, and no more black and cyan on my printouts. The yellow and magenta are still there. I will check the tube tonight, but I have my eye on the HP already. Dead after 13 months!

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (7/8/04 5:16 PM) | + / - | Ron: Its a disposable world and any new inexpensive printer that you purchase, simply will not last very long, no matter what manufactor it is. Basically any printer under $100 is considered as disposable in the Printer Industry. There are also a lot of cheap HP Printers made, that were lucky to have made it to their 90-day warranty, let alone to a full year warranty period [do a search on the HP Deskjet 3320, as an example]. Some HP Printers only came with a Color Ink Cartridge and because Black is the most widely used color [for text printing], you had to buy a black cartridge right away, at an additional cost of around $30 to $35. You are taking a chance with any inexpensive ink jet printer you buy. Prices have came way down in the last few years, but something had to be sacraficed for those lower prices and it seems like it was quality. When you decide on a particular model, do a search on this Printer Repair Site and see if there are any posted messages on that new model, before you buy it. Maybe other people have already been having possible problems and at least you would know it in advance...Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by David Ellis (7/8/04 6:21 PM) | + / - | Thought I'd add this post to the cx5200 Some may find it helpful. I found the thread about a single clogged nozzle and smearing for cx5200 and it's 50 or so postings about the same problem I'm having. I got this 'as is' on ebay and the url's to tips on Compass Micro were great. I've gotten 2 of these recently and my son has one. The bad news is that they get clogged up every so often and the good news is that it's easy but time consuming to fix. I did follow the article at C.M. for taking out the nozzle cleaning assembly and at the end he recommends that you (I) get the manual from them. It's $20 delivered in 2 or 3 days and since I've got basically 3 of them to maintain so I decided to get it. I got this Multi-f b/c of all the good reviews about it when it first came out and the extreme price break now. I can see why the price has dropped so low and there are so many returned, as-is units available. I might just buy some more, clean them up and sell them for 1/2 of retail!! Thanx again

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Anonymous (7/9/04 10:50 AM) | + / - | My printer died after about a year, as well. I had been using generic black cartridges but original Epson color cartridges. When the color carts ran out, I replaced them with generic and the printer magically stopped working. I figured maybe you had to have at least one Epson cart installed in order for the printer to work. Bought a new Epson black, nothing printed. Said "Ah, what the heck" and bought a whole set of Epson color carts. Installed them and nothing worked. Ran nozzle checks and head cleaning over and over and over again and still nothing. Until I found this forum today, I thought maybe the cheap ink cartridges I used fried something in the circuitry. But now I know I'm not alone. I'll haul the printer out of the closet and try fixing the tube, but I just wanted to add my story to the list.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Levent (7/14/04 1:56 PM) | + / - | Same problem, called technical service in Toronto, told the guy I run head cleaning 5 times but did not work. He said "please do what I say sir", said ok and listened. He directed me to head cleaning software tool step by step : click start menu, click printers, ... I interrupted couple of times, "I have done cleaning 5 times, it DID NOT WORK" but he kept saying "please do what I say sir". I thought he would tell me something different and followed his directions. At the end of cleaning cycle he asked me if it worked. I said "I am telling you I have done this 5 times and 6th one is not different" He said "SIR YOUR PRINTER HAS A PROBLEM", oh really what a wise statement. You have to send it to us with this many dollars for shipping and handling etc etc. DO NOT EVER BUY EPSON... Oh buy the way mine is 16 months old.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Charlotte (7/28/04 11:21 AM) | + / - | I was surprised when I found this site. My CX5200 went blank after changing the ink cartridges. The printer is 15 months old. E-mailed Epson. Got a reply that the would recommend a repair service. Great! I changed 2 cartridges Saturday. This was the first sign of trouble. I printed an 8X10 picture prior to changing the cartridges and it printed perfect. Monday I changed all 4 cartridges as they used ones went bad. Today I purchased a CX6400. Office Depot swapped the used cartridges for me and Epson will replace them for Office Depot. My only loss other than the printer was my time and the 2 I used Saturday because I didn't save the boxes. Is anyone aware of any problems with the CX6400?

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (7/28/04 11:36 AM) | + / - | Charlotte: Not many reported problems YET on the "CX6400" model, but its still fairly new. | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Kennyboi (7/30/04 9:57 PM) | + / - | It seems that everyone that bought the Epson CX5200 have all been having problems with it after the 1 year warranty is over. I bought my CX5200 in march of 03' and for some stupid reason, when i switched the ink cartridges, all the ink stopped working except for the one i didn't replace. After skimming through this thread, i think i should just throw away this POS and buy a canon photo printer or some cheap Lexmark printer. If anyone knows a good all-in-one printer for cheap or some type of photo printer for cheap, please respond. Wasted a good 80 bux on the ink and now the printer is acting up..just a big waste of money!
|
 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (8/2/04 9:42 AM) | + / - | Kennyboi: The older ink jet printers, were just built better and lasted longer. Of course they also cost more, so you paid for that quality. The new ink jet printers [from all manufactors] are made so cheaply, that the have basically become throw away printers. Anytime something goes wrong, its cheaper to buy another inexpensive printer, than having your old one repaired. Its almost cheaper to buy another inexpensive printer, rather than replacing the ink cartridges in the one you own. Basically, any printer under $100 is considered a disposable printer in the Printer Industry. Even the quality of the printers from $100 to $150, is starting to look like they are becoming more disposable as well. The majority of people seem to buy those inexpensive printers at a high rate, so in turn printer manufactors keep building cheaper printers to compete with each other. To keep the prices lower, I guess something has to be sacraficed along the way. Unfortunatly with new ink jet printers, it seems like its the quality of the new products being produced. As usual, it turns out to be the consumer who ends up really suffering the most...Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Hal (8/9/04 10:15 PM) | + / - | My Epson CX5200 exhibited the same symptoms. Yellow and Magenta quit printing. Luckily I had the 2 year CompUSA replacement warranty so I returned it for a CX5400 on July 24,2004. The CX5400 printed fine until yesteday, August 8th. Now it won't print yellow at all, even with a new Epson cartridge and multiple head cleanings. I returned it to CompUSA and they are going to try to fix it, but after reading these emails, I think I'll demand my money back and get a Canon or some other brand.

Was printing the colours. Did cleanings without result. Changed the colour cartridges, thinking maybe there was some glitch, and then only majenta would print. Thought we had a bad batch of cartridges and went out and bought new black and new colour and changed them all... still nothing. Will look tomorrow at the tube problem, but I think it will be my last Epson as well. I'll be digging up my warranty...maybe I'll be lucky ;)

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Rob Louis (8/16/04 8:49 PM) | + / - | I went ahead and purchased an HP after my 5200 went bad. It still irks me that I thought the initial problem was bad toner. So what did I do? I went out and bought more only to find out that the problem wasn't the toner after all. I see others have done the same. Epson probably has seen a short term spike in toner sales as a result. Too bad printer sales will fall as no one I know will buy another one of these pieces of junk (5200, 5400, 6400 and so on). I know manufacturers are giving cheaply made printers away so you'll buy their toner. Long term I think it hurts the printer companies because I'll never buy another Epson printer. And because I don't own an Epson printer anymore I won't buy Epson toner. In the end hopefully the consumer wins.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Fran (8/17/04 5:06 PM) | + / - | I too experienced the same problem as everyone else. My CX5200 was about 16 mos. old and after changing the ink for the 3rd time nothing printed. I searched for help and sent EPSON tech support a note with my problem. They instructed me to a nearby repair center for service as there was nothing I could do. Today I found this site and I am amazed so many people are having the same problem. The tube was disconnected and I reconnected it and so far still nothing.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Tom (8/17/04 11:45 PM) | + / - | Ok, this is fascinating. I "inherited" this printer from my dad who recently passed away. He was having problems with the printer, so I replaced the cartridges- no luck! I just checked my tube. It was connected, but when I disconnected it and took off the white end that connects under the sponge, I discovered that the white plastic piece is completely clogged. Will let it soak overnight and see what happens. Those of us who have found that our tube has not become disconnected may still have a clog in the tip of the tube. I'll let you know if this works! I would hope Epson would take some responsibility for this- but who am I kidding?

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by sebert (8/19/04 11:12 AM) | + / - | Same problem. Tried everything included complete cleaning of the heads, tubes etc... No luck. Never purchase an Epson Printer. You would waste your money !!!!

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Joanne (8/19/04 2:47 PM) | + / - | I originally purchased mine on 1/03. Had the "clog" problem about 9 months later. Could not recover after numerous cleanings. Spent extra on new cartridges as well. Customer support replaced the printer on 9/03 because it was still under warranty. But now I have the same problem with the replaced one. Of course, my one year warranty has passed. So if I want to speak with tech support, I have to first pay a $9.95 fee to have a tech guy tell me that I have to go through cleaning cycles. It's not worth it. Very disappointed in Epson. I'm buying a Canon MP360!!!

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Wes (8/24/04 12:12 PM) | + / - | Since the printer is still under warranty why not just have Epson replace it. Are there lawyers on this board? This is ridiculous.

 | Re: Epson CX5400 clog by Tom (8/30/04 9:09 AM) | + / - | This printer is less than 9 months old. A Christmas, 2003 present. I normally print in black. The printer/copier has been excellent up to 8/26/04. when it ran out of majenta ink (disables all printing). I changed all color cartridges (for first time) but not the black cartridge(the black cartridge was 40% full). After the color cartridge change black printing started to skip and failed to print alltogether. I replaced the black cartridge (with a compatible catridge...the only one available locally). I printed 4-5 black pages ok then black printing began to skip and failed alltogether. Nozzle test shows colors but not black. Clean cycles did not help. I then examined the cleaning purge tube as instructed in the compassmicro.com tip site...it is disconnected...looks like a difficult job to reattach without extensive disassembly of printer. This is not the type of customer maintenance expected. As this printer was a Christmas present, while it is still under warrantee, I do not have proof of purchase...probably going to be a problem with Epson. Setting aside the 1 yr. warantee, after considering the problem, finding the disconnected purge tube and seeing all the similar complaint history collected here, I agree that this is a faulted product. It is unreasonable to expect a $150 printer to fail, requiring expensive repair or product replacement, within a three year window, and certainly not after 9 to 12 months as is cited repeatedly in this site. Ink ducts will clog for various reasons, a fact of life, this should be repairable as part of normal self maintenance at least. I am concerned as there appears to be no provision from Epson to facilitate and support self maintenance. For example: easy customer access to the print heads and related parts, suitable service instructions, availablity of cleaning materials, etc. Printer replacement is not an acceptable solution.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Becca (8/31/04 6:44 AM) | + / - | My printer had the same problem- thought it was a goner. The tube was in fact disconnected- I reconnected it (not easy), and it works like new! Thank you SO much for the link- you saved me from buying a new printer- thank you, thank you, thank you!!

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Jay (8/31/04 7:48 AM) | + / - | Is this a worldwide problem? I'm in the UK & I bought my CX5200 in April 2003. I moved house 3 months ago and promptly set up my PC in my new home. Any guesses what happened ? Yep, everything worked except my CX5200. I changed the blue and black (they were low but not out) and still nothing. I'm not a self doubter but I assumed that I had transported it badly from my previous home but these threads now tell me something else. My symptoms are exactly the same as most of the ones I have read and, oddly enough, so is my just-past-warranty time period. If it had been some cheap Lexmark type I wouldn't be so bothered but when it worked (Those lovely 12 months) it worked brilliantly. I haven't got the patience to sit and work out how much we all paid for printers and cartridges but I'm sure it would be a scary total!

Repeat a total of 4 times or until it looks like you've got the head clean. Print one page and let the machine dry out till next day. It worked for me, now my Epson CX5400 prints like new again, except now I have a paper jam problem........(5 weeks later) ************************************************

The black cartridge was working fine. I'm having the same problem accessing the compass micro link as the previous poster. If someone has the info, could you please send it to me also?
Thanks!

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by CcRider (1/7/05 6:40 PM) | + / - | Wahooo success :) I was feeling sure it was that tube thing off since nothing was printing & I didn't figure all the heads would be plugged. I had tried the paper towel under the print head with no results, then since this year old printer was given to me I went & spent $30 on new color cartriges. still no good, after spending the money on them I got pizzed & decided to use a hypo that I had from a ink refill kit & pulled all the cartriges & made a mix of 50% windex & 50% scalding hot tap water. the hypo would not fit down over the little ink points but I held it tighly against them & injected a good sqwirt of the mix into each one. still no results at the time but few hours later after giving up I accidentally bumped the scan button with my puter chair & it scaned a picture I had in the flatbed & printed it out, pretty streaky but at least I had gotten something :) ran one cleaning cycle & zowie! its printing beautifull pictures :) hope others can have the same luck Peace CcRider

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Jessica (1/7/05 7:57 PM) | + / - | No success here yet. We're trying the different head cleaning techniques, but the printer just seems to be getting worse. It now refuses to recognize the black cartridge and suggests we buy a new one. Right... Also it's saying the magenta cartridge, that I just replaced, is empty. It's not and neither is the black cartridge. There is definately still plenty of ink in both. But now we can't even get the darn thing to try to print. I spoke to customer service earlier today and the guy had no idea what I was talking about and was even so unfamiliar with the machine that he had no clue what I was talking about when I mentioned the indicator lights under the scanner hood.
Is there any hope of getting epson to repair or replace this since the warranty expired about 4 months ago? Did you all have to get mean with them to get some results?
I'm not going to go out and buy more of their expensive ink for a machine that probably won't work anyways. I already have a whole extra set of color cartridges that are likely to be useless at this point. Ugh!

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by CcRider (1/7/05 9:03 PM) | + / - | Jessica you might want to look at this little utility I found on this site http://www.listsoft.com/13300 It does some things like lets you turn off the out of ink warnings etc, might be helpfull if your sure your ink isn't empty. I downloaded it but managed to fix mine before I tried it. with mine the paper towel soaked in windex & injecting the mix through the little tubes did the trick good luck CcRider

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Darrenmv (1/13/05 3:46 PM) | + / - | Hi all. I am a printer repair technician here at Computer Heaven, Inc. I am also the owner of the company. We have been in business for 10 years and I can tell you from my experience that as soon as Epson came out with the Durabright inks the troubles started. I have since stopped selling most Epson printers and switched over to Canon. I constantly get Epsons here in the shop with clogged heads. Some I can clear witht he fluid and others are a lost cause. Even when I can clear the clog they usually come back in a few months with another clog anyway. Eventually I get them into a Canon printer and their troubles disappear. Shame on Epson is all I can say. I used to be a big fan and promoted their printers. But I can't do that any longer. I cannot recommend such a poorly made printer that is virtually guarnteed to clog and waste ton's of ink on cleaning cycles.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by donnie (1/15/05 10:26 PM) | + / - | My CX5200's four colors failed last week. After reading this forum, I checked for a common problem source. Sure enough, that stupid clear plastic suction tube was staring up at me, when I slid the white tray to the right. Last night, I used a std needle nose pliers, and managed to guide the tube back onto the black connector on the tray bottom after 30 minutes. I folded a 3x5 card to hold the tray to the right. Noting the head rest rotates if pushed on, I held the (very soft and pliable) clear tube with pliers, and toggled the head rest to push the tube back on. Unfortunarly, by now many nozzles were clogged, despite using up lots of ink with cleaning and nozzle checks. Black works fine, but yellow has missing lines. It probably needs more work cleaning the head itself, but I just bought a HP 1315 3-in-1, with heads in cartridge! No more Epsons for me, as the tube design and clogging heads is a major engineering design flaw.

 | Re: Re: Epson CX5200 clog by donnie (1/20/05 9:49 PM) | + / - | I soaked a strip of paper tower, folded over 10-12 times, then placed the soaked strip in the unit. After traversing back and forth a few times, it was a black mess. I repeated this with a clean paper strip, and let it soak for 20 minutes.
It seems the black ink wicks out while sitting on the wet tower. At first there were some missing segments in the nozzle check print for all colors. But after a couple cleans, the nozzle check looked good. This was verified by both printing and copying -- it works fine again, for now.
Of course, now I am getting color ink warnings, and the black is getting there too -- as I had traded my extra Epson's for new HP 56/57 cartridges!
I presume if I wish to get more ink, that Epson ink is the only way to go, however expensive. I notice Epson raised the price by 20% a few months ago for the CX5200. Its like drug products, the price goes up as the product matures and costs go down -- the opposite of everything else high-tech except Windows.

I've done quit a bit of printing with mine & its still working fine. since I got my epson 5200 gave to me I'm not out anything by trying the cheaper ink. so I've ordered a full set of color and black cartriges from an ebay ink store for $18.20 that includes the shipping. after I've used these awhile I'll post & let everyone know if I experience any problems. the ebay place is http://corporate.auctionworks.com

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by anette (1/24/05 5:01 PM) | + / - | I knew it was not only I who got this problem. My husband and I bought one last June 2003. I did not know that it was relatively a new printer and no wonder at that time the reviews are good. It is true that this printer is noisy but I can live with that. But I was getting some streaky lines now and then which were fixed by head cleaning and nozzle checking. Recently, I was doing some printing and it was fine, then suddenly the print on the last page was so blurry and when I tried to print another one again, nothing came out. My husband found the contact number here in Canada but he doesnt want to talk to tech support people(he got pissed off so many times), so I tried. The voice respond system mentioned for the products that are out of warranty we have to pay 9.95 dollars for this service. What else did I do? I hang up the phone. we took care of our appliances and electronics carefully and most of them are 10 years old. Thinking about this makes me angry, I feel cheated and I do not take these things lightly. It is an insult.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (1/25/05 4:14 PM) | + / - | Anette: You might be able to fix it yourself, or at least try to repair it, if you want too. You might want to check out the "Dura Brite Blank Output Information Page", for the "CX82", "CX5200" & "CX64/C84" models, at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/duraink.html . It seems like most of the problems are not actually related to clogging, or even a bad or empty ink cartridge, but is usually more of a Hardware/Parts Failure, but no way for me to really know. The most common failure seems to happen most of the time, just by simply repacing the ink cartridges, or simply happens during normal use of the printer. The most common problem found on some of the newer "C" & "CX" printers, is the tubing on the cap assembly becomes disconnected. The cap assembly can't clean the print head if the tube is detached. That information page may be of some help on your printers possible problem, if that tube has actually come off. I know this information does not really give you that much to go on, but I felt you should know about this common problem, just in case it happens to apply in your case...There is an "Epson CX5200 Disassembly Instruction Page", available to view at http://www.inkjetprinterhelp.us/cx52001.html , that may be of some help...Good Luck! | Re: Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Anonymous (1/25/05 5:03 PM) | + / - | Thanks Danny. My husband already went to several sites and I think incuding the one you recommend. But its all the same. We are afraid to try out more for fear that we might wreck our printer. Thank you.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (1/25/05 5:24 PM) | + / - | Anette: You're welcome and I'm sorry that I could not help you further. At this point, if your printer is not printing at all, you probably do not have to worry about actually making it worse, or wreaking your printer. It will usually cost you as much, or sometimes more to have it repaired, than it may cost for another new printer. Prices have came way down in the last few years on new printers, but the cost of labor is still expensive [usually from $60 to $110 an hour]...The only other option you can try, is to contact the Epson Customer Relations Department for Canada and lodge an actual complaint. Once your printer is past its one year warranty period, I cannot promise you it will do any good to complain, but its always worth the chance. The only "Epson Customer Relations" number I have is for where I live, here in the USA [562-276-1311] and that probably won't do you any good living in Canada. However, you may be able to find a number for your area, by checking out the EPSON GLOBAL web-site, at http://www.epson.com/ . Then simply click-on Canada and then click-on CONTACT EPSON CANADA and see what your available choices are...Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson CX5200 & CX5400 clog by lstar (2/26/05 3:34 PM) | + / - | Add two more to the list of clogged Printer. Not even sure when I got the CX5200, but couldn't have had it over 12 months before it just seemingly was printing, but all pages were blank and this was with using the original ink cartiages which I know each were almost half full. I was still under warranty and email EPSON's Tech Support. They made me feel like a total a**, but I am sure theeirs emails were computer generated. I brought 2 more cartiage sets, because this was EPSON's suggestions. They would say, do the Head Cleaner, Noxxle Check and Print Head Alignment, which I'd already done, using the print's cleaner built in cleaner/adjustmenter/checker but still nothing was printing. Finally they sent me a address to take the printer to at a cost of least to have it repair at my expense. I called them and they said it would cost $35 and couldn't promise this would fix it. Besides doing all they said to and uninstalling and reinstalling the Printer Drivers which didn't help. I just felt I'd spent enough money and time and gave up. Must be nice being so rich and all the time wasted.
Ok, being such a April Fool, on April 1st I ordered the CX5400, thinking this one would be different and wouldn't have the same problems. Ok, yesterday the CX5400 started doing the same thing. OMG, I want nothing to do with another EPSON product.
I have a old EPSON Color Style which still prints will when the inks don't dry out.
I did alot of research on each of these Prints. The Reviews were all excellent for my needs and the price. Gee, the cost of their Ink is close to being more than what I paid for the CX5200 or CX5400 printers.
I found this site today and vertified what I thought was the problem and it wasn't just with mine.
Going to yell at EPSON about these printer tomorrow and let them know that they have lost another customer. Yeah, like will care. oooh, well. If I get this CX5400 replace I know it will clog again within a Year. So, why should I even bother.
Guess, just another company that doesn't care about their customers!

When I read the post re: the little hose coming off, I quickly checked it out. Sure enough, there it was - dangling. An hour later and few choice words, it was back on. After running a couple of cleaning cycles and changing the black cartridge, its good to go again. I'm so relieved. Thanks for tip!!

I have noticed that you seem to be responding to all of these people with the same problem I have. I have had my CX5200 for 14 months. I just changed the color ink cartridges and now it does not print ANYTHING! I don't understand how Epson can sit back and do nothing while just about everyone has the same problem with their printer. It is ridiculous. I think that Epson had better do something soon or they will have about a thousand complaints to the BBB. I know I intend to report them, and I certainly hope that everyone on this site with the same problem does also. It is the only way they are going to do anything about it.

 | Re: Re: Epson CX5200 & CX5400 clog by Jaci (3/1/05 8:51 AM) | + / - | I feel exactly the same way you do. I just yelled at Epson and they treated me like crap. They were rude and didn't help me at all. I have only had my CX5200 for 14 months and now that I have changed the color ink cartridges, it won't print anything. Please report Epson to the Better Business Bureau. It is the only way they will have to do anything about this problem.

No black and magenta would print out, and cyan and yellow was spotty, even after changing Epson brand carts, and multiple head cleanings. I called the US Epson Service line: (562)276-4382 Hours: Mon.- Fri. 6AM-6PM (PT). Since it was out of warranty, I had to pay $9.95 on my charge card to get to talk with a human, who had me clean 2 more times, pull out each cart, cover the spout with a piece of paper and shake it for 10 seconds, and put them back in, and then head clean once more. None of this changed the nozzle check, so he then gave me a Reference number, and transferred me to the Customer Satisfaction group. She offered me 3 choices: 1) a $40 off coupon code for any purchase on their website. 2) a discount price on 3 different printers: - CX4600 for $90 - $30 rebate = $60 - CX6600 for $160 - $50 rebate = $110 - RX500 for $190 - $50 rebate = $140 3) Free repair and shipping of my printer (they send you a UPS label by mail, you pack and call UPS, they repair in 7 - 10 days, and send it back). Since I could find the RX500 at Sam's Club for $149 without a mail in rebate, I figured that wasn't much of a deal. I opted for the free repair. [OR] Re: cx5200 not printing by SeaHawk (2/16/05 6:28 PM): Ok good news! I had a cx5200 and recomended it to numerous customers of mine. Recently mine and a customers quit printing as you described. The trick, I think, is to coat the outside (ONLY THE OUTSIDE) with threadlock compound afterwards. This should keep the piece in place for the future. Maybe someone could clue EPSON in on this. This solution has not yet stood the test of time; let me know if your results vary! Threadlock may attack some plastics. I used Loctite 242 #24206 (Methacrylic Ester) to bond the exterior of the connection from the black tube to the clear tube and in between. I did NOT use any inside any of the hoses. I cleaned the hoses with simple green prior to bonding them (inside and out). This repair (disassembly and reassembly) is for intermediate experience; there are several critical connections which are difficult to re-seat and align properly. Read the above referenced instructions CAREFULLY.....Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson CX5400 clog by Michael Hess (3/12/05 10:00 AM) | + / - | I have an Epson Stylus CX5400 that I bought just under a year ago. I went through two black ink cartridges, and just replaced the color cartridges. Recently, just before I replaced the color cartridges, the colors started to wash out, looking more and more blue. I thought it was simply because I was getting empty. After replacing the cartridges, the same phenomena occurs. I tried the nozzle test/head cleaning procedure 3 times or so, with the same results. The nozzle check shows the Cyan printing pretty well, and the magenta and yellow printing not at all. It seems that I must have a clog. What should I do? Thanks.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (3/14/05 5:57 PM) | -1 + / - | Michael: There have been a lot of strange printing problems that have been happening on the newer "CX" models. If your printer is actually still under its origional factory warranty, then I would recommend that you call the "Epson Technical Support Department". There's no charge to talk to the support department, when your printer is under warranty and that way you are talking directly with a technician, that is actually trained by Epson Company on your particular printer. To see available phone numbers for technical support and replacement parts ordering, go on-line to Epson @ " http://www.epson.com ", or call the Epson Automated Support Locator @ 1-800-442-2110 [press 1, then 1 & following prompts]. NOTE: If your printer is out of warranty, you will need a credit card, before the technicians can help you, because there is a charge for technical support over the phone. If they are unable to actually help you over the phone and your printer is under warranty, then you can call the "Epson Connection", at 1-562-276-1300 and file a Warranty Claim. Epson normally offers a WHOLE UNIT EXCHANGE on most ink jet style printers that fail under warranty, but you may need to provide "Proof Of Purchase" [origional sales receipt or invoice] to complete that warranty claim. You also need to know that a Whole Unit Exchange is where Epson will send you a replacement printer, in exchange for your defective warranty printer. That replacement printer is usually not an actual new printer. It may be another printer that also failed under warranty and was also returned to Epson Company. Returned warranty printers, then go thru the Epson Repair Facility, where they are repaired. Then they may be used as a replacement printer, for any other printers of the same model that may also fail under warranty...Good Luck! Denny Conway

Black started to give "light lines through print" at specific lines of print about 4-5 months ago. Cleaned according to directions and ok for couple months. Same about 1-2 months ago. Replaced black (guessed because can't see through casing) and ok again. REALLY bad with no warning 3-15-05. What?! Thirteen months for me, too??! What's going on here. Science says too many "coincidences" to be random. My love affair with Epson is in great danger. Who owns the store now? No toll-free number an indication of arrogance or deliberate built-in obsolescence? Very, very disillusioning in such a great 4-in-one.

I called Epson and described the problem and they walked me threw some diagnostic steps and made sure I was using only Epson inks. After all that they sent me a new (well probally new refurb) cx5400. Same thing with my customer! Also note both printers were out of their year warranty!....Good Luck! Denny Conway

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Gary (3/22/05 8:17 PM) | + / - | Hey! I'm the Gary mentioned above.
I shipped back the CX5200 to Epson, and today I got a new (or refurb, can't tell) CX6600, complete with new ink carts - the Black ink is even the Extra Capacity one.
Note that this takes all different carts, so I guess I gotta sell my unopened CX5200 carts on eBay...
Anyhow, this printer seems to be doing fine so far, and is an nice upgrade to the CX5200.
My total cost out-of-pocket was $25: $9.95 for Epson to take my call, and $15 to package the printer to ship back (I had thrown out the box at Christmas). Epson paid return shipping with a UPS pickup label.
So far, so good! Good luck!

 | Re:Epson Stylus CX6400 by nolaelkins (3/23/05 5:33 PM) | + / - | I bought an Epson Stylus CX6400 all-in-one Printer in Oct. 2004 and by Mar. 2005 mid-month it stopped printing for seemingly no good reason! I took it back to Best Buy and replaced it, that day with the Epson Stylus CX6600. I will see how long this one lasts! Apparently, there are problems with the 6400, but nobody at Epson is explaining why the it's been discontinued? I should beat the crap out of the Epson "onsite" person at Best Buy for selling it to me. But if the 6600 does the same thing, somebody's going to have some mighty tall explaining to do. We'll see.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (3/24/05 10:33 AM) | + / - | nolaelkins: Don't blame the sales person at Best Buy, because they are not actually an epson on-site person. They are simply a Best Buy sales clerk, who are not actually trained by Epson Company on their products. Same as if you bought the printer from Walmart or Kmart. They are just expected to sell manufactors products, by their employer, which in this case is Best Buy. Sales people rarely have any knowledge of possible printers failures or weak points. I work for an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer" and I don't even get any actual training on the newer Epson Printer models, made with-in the last 3 or 4 years. However, I'm still expected to work on those printers by my employer and by Epson Company, when they come in for repairs...Here's some additional info that you may not be aware of: If Best Buy repaced your CX6400 because it failed under warranty, then you should know that your origional one-year warranty, from when you origionally bought the CX6400, still applies to the replacement printer. That means the warranty on the replacement printer will expire in October 2005. Thats because you only paid for the origional one-year warranty, when you bought the CX6400. Unless you actually bought the extended service contract that Best Buy usually offers people. In that case, Best Buy warranties your printer past the origional epson printer warranty and not actually Epson Company...Denny Conway

And he WAS an Epson "On-Site" Rep, Dear! That's exactly how he introduced himself!! And they know there ARE problems with their product....and he was trying to get the thing "sold." Like He's been told to do. And,I did buy Best Buy's 2 yr. extended warranty. The young man will appreciate your running defense for him. The Point IS...that there are defects in Epson's Product and We as Patrons are upset that We are on the phones, writing and burning gasoline because things are going way too wrong--way too often and too soon after spending our hard earned cash and its inconvenient and disheartening that we're going through this. Sure, I was fortunate to be under the protective "umbrella" of a 2yr. warranty but some others in this forum are not! I have a Small business and this inconvenience cost me! And I did all those little "nozzle cleaning" "head cleaning" things they suggested in the manual, hoping I could get back to work...but to no avail and to be honest, most of us Paying Customers are not expecting to have to call on our "mechanical skills" on the merchandise we purchase from Best Buy or anywhere else!

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (3/28/05 10:06 AM) | + / - | nolaelkins: I did not mean to upset you, so I appologize. You are right, about me not knowing what the sales person told you. I simply was trying to let you know that as far as I knew, Epson Company does not normally train any of the sales people that sell their products at sales outlets. At least they do not train any of the sales people that work at the company where I am employeed. And my employeer is not only an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", but they are also a PREMIER ACCOUNT, which is the highest level of service dealer that epson has. As the printer technician where I am employeed, if I know of particular problems that I am seeing in certain models, I let my sales people know. So that way, they hopefully don't try and sell those particular models...Again, my apologies for upsetting you, that was not my point at all...Denny Conway

Working fine one day and gone the next and just a few days after the warranty expired...how funny! Of course now I have 2 sets of opened ink cartriges cause I kept thinking it was bad ink. | Re: Re: Epson CX5200 clog by mleary (4/21/05 6:17 PM) | +1 + / - | Exactly! I, too, had 2 HP printers and looked forward to a long and reliable life with my beautiful Epson CX-5400, Epson having been super-reliable in the past (at least in the prehistoric days of tractor-feed). How sad to lose trust!!! So, where does one find a copier/scanner/color printer one can trust? Are all the companies in cahoots on this? Does make one wonder, considering the price-fixing in the oil market and the similarity of cost of so many other products. I've written to Epson. Used the address given at the end of their promise of warranty in the Quick Reference Guide. (How fitting!) Will see what happens and will post their answer here. If not satisfactory, I'm going to try to find a class-action suit if one has formed. My understanding about marketing is that ONE complaint represents 3000 dissatisfied customers who don't speak up. Hope more folks write to Epson!!

However, the most common problem is that a small hose falls off, causing a loss of printing ability. You might want to check out the "Dura Brite Blank Output Information Page", at http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/duraink.html . If anyone is interested, I was successful in repairing my C82's problem with printing blank pages. I noticed that under the pad where the heads sit when parked, there is a black hose attached to it. That black hose is supposed to be attached to another clear hose. Mine was not. The clear hose was sitting there attached to nothing. I took the cover off of the printer, and pulled the seating pad over to the right. I was then able to use a pair of needlenose pliers and a pair of tweezers to put these 2 hoses back together again. I then powered up the printer and ran a head cleaning. Much to my surprise, the hoses blew apart again, leaving a pretty good mess with ink splatters. I cleaned up, then removed the hose clamp from the hose which is visible at the front of the assembly. I then transferred it to the hoses under the pad. I then used a simple wire tie to re-clamp the front hose. I then ran a head cleaning again. this time, everything stayed together. I re-connected to my PC, ran a nozzle check, and voila, it prints. A few head cleanings later, and it was printing like normal again. It took about 2 hours to figure out how to get it apart and find the problem, but, now my printer is functional again. I found under the cleaning pad the suction hose (a small plastic pipe) had come loose, so any number of head cleans were a waste of time as the ink wasn't been drawn thro'. (Printed letter on someone else's printer. Also sent two copies of same printed on MY printer so problem was noted). Very immediate and responsive phone call (April 27) from actual human being. Sent me refurbished CX6600 immediately. Received same two days after phone call (April 29). Customer rep also sent me an extra black cartridge to replace the new one I had just installed in my CX5400 in attempt to "clean", etc. Thanks to all for this site. | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Jwalker (5/10/05 1:31 PM) | + / - | Wow! I am a victim of a crummy HP that died under light use and just after warranty, and I waded through mountains of customer complaints on the "fixyourownprinter" website only to realize that literally hundreds of people experienced the same problems I did at approximately the same time.
So . . . I cruised through the website to explore some other possible replacement printers (NOT HP), only to realize that ALL the inexpensive printers are manufactured to be truly disposable. They are simply not designed to last.
I will venture into my next purchase with that understanding, and I hope the rest of you won't waste too much time seeking the Holy Grail of printers. Doesn't exist - - not in this price range, anyway!
Best of luck to all of you! Cheers - -

Any thoughts or suggestions? Anyone...?

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog, printhead cleaning by Marc R (5/12/05 10:14 AM) | + / - | I followed the advice of many others on this forum when the printheads on my Epson CX5200 appeared to become clogged and head cleaning failed to resolve the problem. I purchased the printhead cleaning solution from fixyourownprinter.com. After several "flushes" of the printheads I was still unable to print without significant banding. Following other advice posted here I disassembled the printer and found the vacumn tube connected to the cleaning mechanism had become disconnected; without this tube connected cleaning the heads will be ineffective. I tried to reconnect the tube using a needle nose pliers, but because I have large hands there was no way to reconnect it with a complete printer stipdown. Directions for disassembly are posted elesewhere on this page and I found them quite useful; anyone with a Phillips screwdriver and 30 minutes could accomplish the job. After reassembling the printer I again used the printhead cleaning solution, followed by cleaning the heads. Banding still existed for the black and cyan colors. After reapplying additional cleaning solution and leaving in overnight I am still unable to print black or cyan without banding. At this point I've decided to give up on the beast, as I figure that the tiny printheads for black and cyan must have "undissolvable" particles in some of the nozzles. In any case the advice on this page worked like a champ for two of the four colors. Perhaps my problems stem from using third-party cartridges for over a year. I found the advice on this page to be sound and worth a short for anyone experiencing a similar problem.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Denny Conway (5/12/05 10:50 AM) | + / - | Marc: I'm glad our information was able to help you locate and try and repair your printers problems. Thanks for the kind words. I'm just sorry that all you efforts were just not completely successful. Unfortunatly, you may be right about the print heads being the cause of your problems. However, they may simply be failing, rather than actually clogged. If you run a "Nozzle Test Page" and there are nozzles still not open and printing, its those print heads that are causing the problems. Unfortunatly, the nozzles inside the print head assembly can also be damaged by using to much force on the plunger of the syringe, while injecting that epson cleaning solution, if you actually try to force the fluid thru the nozzle. To much force/pressure can damage the little tubes inside the nozzle assembly and then it will never work again. One individual print head nozzle is so tiny, that it will not accept a human hair. You can see why they can get clogged so easily, or even why the nozzles can be so easily damaged. The correct method is to use the syringe to add the fluid into the nozzle and then leave the fluids set inside the nozzle for a day or two, to try and dissolve a possible bad clog. If you did not try letting that solution stay inside those nozzles for several days, thats about the only other thing you can actually try...Just to let you know: Unfortunatly, not all "Generic" & "Third-Party" ink cartridges are made the same and none of them actually contain the right formulation of ink, for the epson printers [formula is patented by Epson Company]. Some are probably close and seem to be better than others, but some simply can clog-up or even damage the print head assemblies on epson printers. Epson ink jet printers are one of the few printers on the market that seem to have so many problems with non-manufactors inks, especially the newer models made with-in the last few years. Epson printers use a completely different print head inking system than most other brands of printers and correct epson ink formulation is vital. Most, if not all of the other manufactors, use thermal or bubblejet print heads and because the other brands use a totally different system, they don't seem to have as many problems using refilled inks or non-manufactor's ink cartridges. There are people that say they use generic or third-party inks or ink cartridges in their epson printer and have never had a problem. I've seen and read about too many problems caused by using non-epson ink, especially on the newer models of epson printers that have come out in the last few years...Denny Conway

1. Purchase the EPSON CX4600 for approximately $40. 2. Receive a $50 discount on the next model up, CX6600 and there is apparently a $50 rebate on this $199 beast. 3. Repair my CX5200 for free including free shipping both ways.
Hmmmm, not sure what to do. I DO NOT WANT to go through this again. Maybe I'll try another brand all-in-one due to FEAR.

After reading all the postings on this site, I checked my tube located under the printer head and found it to be disconnected. I reattached the tube and my printer worked great again. No head cleaning, no anything!
I did not disassemble anything to put my tube back. I put a long wooden Q-Tip against the head and pushed it all the way to the right exposing the tube. I then manually moved the ink cartridge holder to hold the Q-Tip in place which held the print head over. I then used two 8' needle nose pliers to replace the tube. I did need someone to hold a light so I could see. Good Luck!

I saw that some of you were having difficulties pursuing a class action. In my day job I work with a variety of attorneys. If you want some help, send me an email and I'll do my best. My email address is dave@santacruzimages.com.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by printerrepairpros (7/19/05 7:01 PM) | + / - | As an Epson authorized service provider, from my experience, I would suggest that the problem is a defective ink system (pump, wiper assembly).

 | epson cx6400 print head stopped working by Anonymous (8/7/05 4:22 PM) | + / - | I see these posts are a year old, but I bought a brand new cx6400 a year and half ago, it was wonderful , I loved it, I have replaced ink cartridges several times. This last time however, when I replaced the black one, it would not work at all and when it charged, it made an unusual clicking noise that it never made before. I bought the epxon head cleaning kit, used it several times, no luck, bought a new epson black cartridge (i always used epson cartridges) installed it, and now none of the color ones work either! I even took the print head cartridge apart and made sure the cleaning solution was working through the little tubes, it was going through fine, so the tubes were NOT clogged, put it all back together, still nothing, no black, no color. DId you ever follow up on your suit? Epson didn't seem to get any better with the cx6400.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by JR (8/10/05 8:36 PM) | + / - | I was just "Googling" for any forums on the net that might be discussing the unusual clicking noise that the previous poster mentioned. In fact, changing the cartridges, etc... sounds exactly like what I've gone through. The difference is that the problem is instead being exhibited on a C84 (I know, I know... time for a new printer anyway). Anyway, hope that someone may have a suggestion for a possible resolve. Thx! :-) =JR

 | Re: Epson CX6600refurbished by mleary (8/14/05 10:36 AM) | + / - | Well, I crowed too soon, I guess, about Epson's prompt and gracious reply to my CX54oo "banding problem: (posting April 29?). Yes, they immediately sent me a CX6600. Many wasted hours by myself and more knowledgeable computer person to try to install. Gets to point (after many steps) where screen orders something like "Now connect the printer to computer and click "Continue". Well, Continue must have meant continue to have problems with Epson because nothing - I repeat nothing! happened. Software? Hardware?
Have been unable to get to contacting Epson because of summer traveling but am now ready to "bell the cat". Again! So discouraging and so frustrating. But I'm bound to get this resolved - somehow. Did I hear Class Action somewhere? Will post Epson's response here for general info.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by delfeld (8/17/05 8:26 AM) | + / - | The funny thing about all these complaints is that Epson has not always been a bad company. It seems to me they are resting on the laurels of their older, better printers from the 1990's.
I have an Epson 3000 and an Epson 5000. The print heads clog if you leave them sit too long without printing, but they clear when you run the cleaning cycles. The printheads were the cutting edge at the time. Even the cheap Epsons from that time period (late 90's) I have collected I have been able to clean and keep running with minimal effort.
Recently there has been a big push to make photo-quality prints, which is one step beyond Epson's first generation technology. In that, the market has been encroached by Canon, Kodak, etc. So Epson had to compete, which meant bumping up their resolution (1440 for the first generation, 2880 and up for the next). But they reduced the quality of their printers overall to cut costs, and did not make any technological advances. The inks they sold were being replaced very often with off-brand inks, so they went through lengthy processes to correct that 'problem.'
Why? The only thing that *ever* makes money over time is something that is *consumable*. So, would they have made printers that don't allow more than one ink replacement? Or not accept off-brand inks? Well, all market indicators say that that is an effective business tactic. Would they have done it? I don't know, but it would be bad business not to. Selling lemons is the best business model imaginable. That is, as long as the general public never knows you are doing it. (This is McDonald's, Wal-Mart's, and almost every dollar-store's tactic.)
What can you do? Start a class-action suit. (Why should we have to clean a clog on an *active* printer? Why should we *not* be able to change inks? Why should we have to wait for Epson to send replacements, or even talk to them at all?) That is a good idea; it would be a great boon if you can get a programmer to verify that there is destructive coding in the drivers, or that the off-the-shelf ink cartridges are different in some way from the originals. Is there proof? Induction is proof if there is a consistent pattern (it seems there is), but that needs to be quantified. What percentage of owners experience the same problem at the same interval? Make a web-site that can start to record that statistic(s), and make sure that the data can be verified (actual owners - use the printer's unique id number).
Also, write to every store that sells the Epson model and tell them the problem, including the warranty issue, and ask them to stop carrying that particular model.
Whenever someone talks about buying a printer, tell them not to buy Epson (this, by the way, is the exact opposite of what you should have done in the late 90's). If you see someone buying an Epson, let them know your woe story.
Get the word out! Hold them accountable!

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Kensey (9/4/05 4:26 PM) | + / - | I was excited to read all of the above. Our Epson CX5400 stopped printing in black. We cleaned the heads etc. Replaced the ink cart. twice. Asked the tech people where my husband works what could be wrong, 2 other fellows and a computer repair place - all said buy a new one. The warranty ran out 17 days before the black stopped printing. My husband bought a CX6600 yesterday. I was trying to follow Denny's and Marty's messages of 4/25 and 7/19 to try and fix the CX5400 anyway and am stumped. Is the "pad where the heads sit when parked" the same thing as the "cleaning pad" ? There is a screw on the left holding this in place - I took it off and can't get it to budge to get to the black tube.. The ink cartg. are off to the right and I could see the clear tube before I moved them there. Can any of this be moved when unpluged? I can't figure out how to take the top/cover off either. I took the "lid" with the white "sheet" on it off but the part with the light in it has 2 screws, 2 plastic things and a band of some sort on the back left. do I need to take that apart? When I unscrewed the front screws on the main body and back screws nothing loosened. I know nothing about all of this but am frustrated with our throw away society so try and fix everything before I have to pay to have it recycled. Help!

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Kensey (9/6/05 11:27 AM) | + / - | Re 9/04/05 Kensey I called the Epson people at the number Denny gave and they are going to fix or replace the 5400 for free. They did feel we should keep the 6600. So the 5400 will go on the other computer. The fellow was very nice about it all. So I now do not need help in taking it apart. Thanks

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by brendaknee (9/14/05 1:08 PM) | + / - | Oh Boy! Had my Epson cx5200 for almost 2 years until the other day it stopped printing. I tried printing in "best photo" setting and it actually worked for another week. Anyway . . . I tried the paper towel thing which did not work, then I tried the tube to see if it was connected - it wasn't. I hooked it up and it kept blowing back off. I decided the clog must be somewhere in the hose. I took the other end of the hose off (experimenting) and upon pushing the ink out of the hose I came upon a small hard object, looked like a small stone (I know it was ink) I managed to work it out of the tube. I reconnected everything and hooked it back up to my computer and now I am getting an error message that won't go away. Should I just toss it in the garbage and shop for something else? By the way, all of the above took me about 3 hours.

 | Re: Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Anonymous (12/3/05 8:11 AM) | + / - | Do you know what kind of Fluid is used in the cleaning process? I'm thinking of attempting it myself maybe with a syringe. I actually own a CX 6400 and I've had it for about a year. Barely used it. Right before I started changing the first set of cartridges my yellow went out completely. It won't print yellow at all. thanks

Now it prints nothing but blank sheets.
Thursday I'm putting it out to the curb with the trash.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Anonymous (12/9/05 9:50 PM) | + / - | LOL I join the ranks of those suckers who bought the biggest POS printer in the world EPSON. Of course, I did not discover that the pile of plastic was in fact JUNK until I purchased all FOUR new ink cartridges thinking that this would solve the "printing blank pages" problem. The only problem that was solved by this was that of having 65 too many dollars in my wallet THANK YOU EPSON for fixing that one for me. I read through this entire thread for ideas before performing the "final solution" I use for the MANY defective and disposable pieces of electronic equipment I have owned. I take them out to my driveway, get out the cameras, then I run them over repeatedly with my truck. Somehow it just makes me feel better. :) Anyhow, I got to the part about the plastic tubes, opened up the printer best I could, nice little port on the back BTW, and discovered that ALL the tubes, about twelve inches worth, WERE CLOGGED SOLID with trusty DURABRITE INK. TWO hours later, still haven't got them all cleaned out. Coming dangerously close to tearing it to pieces getting the hoses out to clean. OH well, think it is time for the "final solution." DONT BUY EPSON. TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND EVERYONE YOU KNOW THE SAME THING. THEY SUCK SUCK SUCK.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by williewell (12/14/05 10:41 AM) | + / - | My cx5200 was working great until I replaced an epson magenta with a Staples generic ink. The red printed very light with lines. Then cx sent a message that it needed black. This I replaced with epson black and it printed blank pages. I tried half a dozen cleaning cycles and got the blue to print. My question is does a faulty print problem in one color affect the others, or do they all work independently? The machine has worked flawlessly for two years and I really love the all in one capability. Anyone have any suggestions about sturdy, longlived (ha) replacements?

 | Re: Re: Epson CX5200 clog by markandjudy (12/24/05 3:46 AM) | + / - | I have an almost new Canon Pixma IP4000 printer which printed in vivid colors up until a few days ago when I changed ink cartridges for the second time. Since then, all the colors are washed out, except black. I have tried all the maintenance procedures which come up in the printer's menus, with no effect. Fortunately, Google led me to this web-site, where you are apparently discussing the usual superiority of Canon over Epson on this particular point. Am I right? If so, what would you suggest I try next? Thanks for your input.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Anonymous (12/30/05 11:21 AM) | + / - | yet another dissatisfied customer . ... . .. . the epson cx5200 sucks . . .cartridges are expensive and Epson has gone to great lengths to prevent one from refilling cartridges (e.g. siphon design, intelli-chips, seals that are punctured when you install them, special inks, etc). Epson is expert at making money on consumables and therefore I will never again return as a customer.

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by crunch (12/30/05 3:05 PM) | + / - | Just another person's woes to add to list: I changed out my ink last week, printer had worked well for two years, and all of a sudden it doesn't work at all. | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by M_Mich (1/14/06 11:09 AM) | + / - | Surprise, surprise. Too people don't find these posts until AFTER something goes wrong. After reading the posts of the last couple years for over an hour, I find I have the same problems as so many others. However, perhaps my experience differs a bit because of the surprising customer support. I was one of the first "kids on the block" to buy a 5200, I think it was in January 2003. Sent in my registration like a good boy, etc. Over the years, the print quality would sometimes suffer, but nothing a head cleaning wouldn't generally take care of. Scanner from day ONE would occasionally power up with an error and the message (on the LCD) of contacting customer service. (Turning the printer on and off a couple times would solve the problem tho, and I've never been not able to scan stuff when I've wanted.) So, that just being a hiccup, I never contacted EPSON about it. All was dandy until I replaced the black (blue was already low) and after all was said and done, replaced with another black, and finally the blue when it died after all the head cleanings. Went to the Epson website, nothing about this (strange, with all the problems) so sent them an email. Got the response (do 3 head cleanings & check patterns, and if still problem, call customer support for further assistance. Epson would like the opportunity to look into this issue on your behalf and provide an appropriate resolution.") Ok, I call, was told about the $9 something fee, told the lady how I was gonna throw the unit in the trash and never buy Epson again, please log my complaint and thanks for the worthless email, and she interrupted me with, Oh? You tried email support, in that case this call is free there is no charge. Hmmm.. Ok, I go over the problem with her. They actually had my info from when I registered the printer 3 years ago! Wow... she says it's a hardware issue and would have to transfer me to someone who could help. After verifing my phone number, I was transfered: and waited on hold for 30 minutes! Not being an 800 number I was getting pretty pissed by the time the phone was finally picked up. (At least they played some decent music as I fumed...) gave the woman on the other end my phone number, and they immediatly offered what others reported: two models for "buy now" at substaintial discount (CX7800 & RX620. Maybe I should've got the RX620 for $159? Seemed like a good deal.) The $40 coupon, or free shipping and fix/or replacement. After 3 years, the original box has been thrown out, but I'll eat the cost of a box & peanuts to ship it back. Really, after all is said and done, I was happy with the performance of this $125 printer for 3 years. Yes, the ink costs are terrible. Yes, I've had piddly little problems with the scanner (although it always worked). But for the cost at the time (they can't be making much on the hardware. I doubt they are losing money per unit, but they must make the money off the ink.) And really, that's an exceptable exchange for me. I thought for sure that after 3 years, I was going to have to buy a new printer, and honestly, would it have been an Epson? Probably not... buy wow, if they are going to stand by their product like this, and if the sent replacement lives an additional 2-3 years??? Maybe I will get an Epson yet again? I have an old color HP gathering dust (that ink was no bargain either and never happy with the print quality) and a Stylus 440 both probably still work too. Hell, I actually have some replacement NIB Star color printer ribbons somewhere in a box! The point is, when I bought those old printers, they cost ALOT back then. $125 for a AIO printer that I used more over 3 years than I did the others? And they'll now after all this time still "make it right". I'm impressed. Granted: without everyone else having the same problems with this model and complaining about it, I probably wouldn't have been treated this way. I owe it to the others before me, and was probably just lucky my unit lived as long as it did. That being the case, I'm still surprised they are standing by their product, and they are earning themselves a second chance, in my book. Heck, I even got to speak with people that were obviously AMERICAN when I called: I could understand them! This whole experience for myself and others must be costing Epson a fortune... maybe they've learned? I've seen posts by others with newer models that suggest perhaps they haven't, but still, how are you normally treated by most tech. support? Bad enough where I won't consider their products again! Epson handled this differently, and I will remember. Printers are a hard item to quantify: well pay $100 dollars and wonder why it stopped working after 3 years? I remember paying $300 for an HP color 500! And guess what? After 3 years there were better products available at less cost. What the 500 print at? 300dpi? So what if it still worked after 3 years, would I still be using it? No, which is why I bought the other HP, and later the Stylus 440, and finally this 5200: they offered what I wanted for a price I'd spend. When this printer died, I thought for sure I was going to cough up another $100 - $250. As far as I'm concerned, Epson just saved me that unexpected expense by their unexpected response to my problem. If all turns out as I hope, I just might spend that money on their company some day in the future. Wow - I was going to be brief: sorry. I just wanted to balance out some of the complaints, and got way long winded. I'm glad I found this group tho, and will look to it in the future when I make another purchasing discision.

 | Re: Re: Epson CX5200 clog/blank page by Anonymous (2/17/06 1:37 PM) | + / - | This seems to be a common problem with the 5200cx and 5400cx printers. What happens is that a small hose below the print head cleaning sponge becomes unconnected. To see if this is the problem, 1) start up the printer 2) select "change cartridges" from the service menu atop the printer 3) after the printer carriage has moved and come to a stop, unplug the printer. 4) slide the carriage gently away from its resting holder - push to the left - and look down at the normal parking position of the carriage (far right) to see a sponge assembly. 5) slide the sponge assembly to the right and look down with a flashlight to see if a hose leads up to the bottom of the sponge assembly.
If the hose has become disconnected, it can be "plugged back into position" with a couple of pairs of extra long (10")tweezers. It's tricky, but after servicing a couple of times, the whole operation can be completed in less than 5 minutes.
Good Luck

 | Re: Epson CX5200 clog by Anonymous (5/2/06 6:55 PM) | + / - | Although I had minor problems with my first printer (HP) they were nothing compared to either of my Epsons (Stylus Photo 820 and CX 5200). And, HP always sent me free ink cartridges when I had a problem. My mom has a CX5200 also. The tube in hers had come loose which I managed to figure out before I discovered this site, but after re-attaching it, the printer still does not print magenta well. That was a couple of months ago. Tonight mine died, at least as far as the black ink goes, and the tube is still attached. The more I run the print head cleaning, the worse it gets and I can see where ink has sprayed out and even appears to have been sucked down into the tube, although it may just be on the outside. I'm tired of fooling with it and cannot believe all the time I have had to waste on simple printing chores because of these near worthless printers. If there is a class action suit, sign me up.

Well a seven inch hemastat won't do it, but I will try to borrow some longer implements tomorrow and see it this can be done... I am also considering taking a sabre saw or a rotary cutter and cutting part of the case away to get to those two hoses.. BTW - the large hose has to go onto a smaller hose which is also very flexible - kinda like threading a piece of overdone spaghetti into a piece of well cooked macaroni... hmmmmm I wonder how many of these printers have been trashed due to this stupid design?
