HP 4550 by Lana (4/10/03 8:33 AM) reply+1 + / -
I have an HP4550 Printer and really like it but lately I have had some problems with it. I have a flashing light and the LED says "please close top cover". I press on the top cover where you load the toner cartridges and sometimes it will work and sometimes it won't. When it works it will print a couple of pages then the light comes on and and I get my message again "please close top cover". Can someone help me with some suggestions? Thanks!

Re: HP 4550 by chris (4/10/03 8:38 AM) reply + / -
has someone worked on it recently? sounds like they didn't put it back together correctly. i've worked on a lot of these, and have yet to see a bad door switch, but i guess that could happen.

Re: HP 4550 by david belton (4/10/03 8:50 AM) reply + / -
The top cover switch is on top of the scanner asm. to get to it you'd have to remove the whole top cover of the machine. It's actuated by a series of levers and linkages attached to the toner door. You could either have a bad switch or the switch/linkages could be contaminated with toner. I would first try to clean the associated areas and check the linkages for wear or a bind. If nothing is found, replace the switch.

Re: HP 4550 by Lana (4/10/03 1:15 PM) reply + / -
Thank you Chris and David for the quick reply. No one has worked on it but my husband did move it from a table to a printer stand so I wonder if picking it up has done something to it. I will check on cleaning the associated areas and check the linkages. Thanks again for your help!

this is a color laserjet 4550, right? i'm sorry, i was thinking of the laserjet 4050. i read wrong. the door switches (both top and rear) are prone to failure (especially from toner residue), and i have replaced a good share of these. sorry for my lack of full understanding earlier...david is right, though. you may be able to clean the switch up. lots of wires underneath the top cover though. if you do take the cover off, just make sure no wires come loose. good luck.

Thanks Chris! I will try it and if it cannot be cleaned, then I will have someone come out and work on it!

Replace Toner by Ray (5/26/03 9:56 PM) reply + / -
I have toner in my hp 4550. but i'm moving and want to temperarily remove the toners. How do I remove the toners?

We have a HP 4550 printer and are not impressed with the color quality...do you know of any quirks with this printer that would cause this?

Re: HP 4550 by moe (6/12/03 5:24 PM) reply + / -
You can rotate the toners around using the control panel, or you can hit the manual release in the right front corner and spin them around with your hand. You have to stop them in just the right spot in order to get them out.

Re: HP 4550 by doro (6/13/03 7:12 AM) reply + / -
Alot of people just remove the toner cartriges. This is a mistake because you also have to remove the toner catch tray under the carousel. To remove the tray open rear door. release the two straps that hold the door up. Then release the two levers for the fuser and remove it. You will see a black tray pull it out. I have seen this tray many times left in leaving a toner bomb when the move is complete. Also you will find missing toner flap springs if they fall off in this tray.

HP Color Laserjet 4550 color problems....HELP!!! by earlomizo (8/5/05 1:57 PM) reply + / -
We have a HP Color Laserjet 4550 printer and for some odd reason we are having problems with the quality of color printing. We tried replacing the Fuser, Drum, and we have also replaced most of the color cartridges. Unfortunatly we are having the same problem and it seems it's getting worse, and spreading to other colors. Would anyone perhaps know what might be causing this issue? Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to someones response...Aloha

HP Color Laserjet 4550 paper tray problems..HELP!! by earlomizo (8/5/05 2:07 PM) reply + / -
We have a HP Color Laserjet 4550 printer and we have been for sometime now having problems with the paper tray 1. Let me explain as long as we have paper in tray 1 we will not get an error. Now keep in mind we have another tray that has paper and thats tray 2. So my question would be why wouldn't it just take the paper from tray 2 when tray 1 is empty? Would anyone possibly know the answer to this? Any help or suggestions would greatly be appreciated...Aloha

Re: HP 4550 by dmzcompute (8/5/05 3:03 PM) reply + / -
Earlomizo,

We need more information then what you provided. What exactly is happening with the print quality. Is the toner smearing, does it have dropouts etc. You may want to go to the reference section of this board and download the service manual and look up print quality issues in the service manual and let us know what hp calls the problem you are having. Just to let you know the transfer belt also can effect print quality. Also your tray issue the way you explain it is very confusing. Lets try to simplify it. When tray 1 runs out of paper what is the message on the display. I assume all you have is tray 1 (manual feeder) and the 250 sheet tray. If you also have the 500 sheet tray, then we may have another issue and you will have to let us know. For now provide more info so someone can help you.

Re: HP 4550 by Stephen (edited 8/5/05 5:08 PM) reply + / -
One of the posts in this thread recommends removing the toner catch tray before moving the printer.

Please, remove it, clean it out, and put it back in.

If you leave it out while moving a large amount of toner that is deposited on the grate under the carousel will fall in to the paper path.

After you have moved the printer, then remove and clean the tray again.

I cleaned a printer that had been moved with the toner installed just a few days ago, toner had even gotten in to the laser scanner.

It cost the customer $130 fror the on site cleaning, and that was a bargain! (1 hour travel, plus 90 minutes spent cleaning)

Hello,
I appreciate you responding and getting back to me, ok to elaborate on what I was saying in regards to the printer tray problem. Sorry I was so vague about the error message and problem. Basically when ever we do not have paper in tray one, an error message comes up saying "Manual feed plain letter For help press the ? key" Now I have pressed this and tried to make tray 2 the default tray to print from, but for some odd reason it won't default to it. Any ideas? Ok now for the printing color quality problem. It started with the cyan it was printing all blotchy and not all the way on the paper. So we went ahead and changed the cyan, and much to our dismay it didn't help. Now we are have a new problem now the magenta now hen we print any color that would have either Magenta, or Cyan we are getting really light and blotchy, and some times even non transparent images. I have tried all that I can think of but Im hardly a printer tech :) Hopefully this has given you a general idea of whats happening. Thanks again for responding.

Aloha

Stephen,
Thanks for responding so quickly, I will go ahead and attempt to clean out the trays. Did it really take you an hour and half to clean all of them out? You wouldn't happen to be in Hawaii by chance :) Anyway got one more question, do you know where I could find a step-by-step guide for doing this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: HP 4550 by dmzcompute (8/6/05 4:56 PM) reply + / -
Your issue can be as simple as having the wrong type of paper set for tray 2. Use the menu key to go th the paper handling menu and press the item key until tray 2 type is displayed and make sure it says plain. Another thing you can do is press the go button and the display should say use " " instead? If it does you will see what the printer thinks it has in tray 2. You can also run a configuration sheet and see what the printer says it thinks it has in tray 2. It could be the tray guides are not set right and the tray is signaling to the printer the wrong size. It could also be the switches in the tray cavity are defective. Do what I say first as this is the most common error.

Re: HP 4550 by earlomizo (8/6/05 5:41 PM) reply + / -
Dmzcompute,
Thanks again for the speedy responses, It's greatly appreciated.
Ok I went ahead and did what you suggested and unfortunatly when I go ino the Paper Handling menu to try and make the tray 2 the default, when I press "Go" nothing happens. Any ideas? Ok I also went ahead and printed up the Configuration page and this is what is seen.
Default Paper Size: Letter
Tray 1 (Legal)
Tray 2 (Exec)

So what exactly should be done....if anything? Now you were saying something about tray guides? How would you get those aligned? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Aloha
Earl

Re: HP 4550 by dmzcompute (8/6/05 7:20 PM) reply + / -
You may have an issue with the switches in the tray cavity. There are three switches and depending on what paper is in the tray and the side and back guides positioned on the actual tray change levers on the side of the paper tray which activate the switches. What I would do is remove the paper from the tray and slide the guides, both side and back, back and forth and watch the levers on the paper tray and make sure they are moving. Sometimes one gets stuck and refuses to move and do what I tell you will position it correctly. It the tray guides are ok, then it is probably the switches in the cavity and they are on a small printed circut board which may have to be replaced. By the way the paper handling menu will not allow you to change the default size of tray 2 since that is determined by the switches.

Re: HP 4550 by Stephen (8/6/05 7:29 PM) reply + / -
Earl,

Most of the toner I cleaned was in other parts of the printer.

I had to remove the top of the printer, and then remove and take the top off of the laser/scanner.

Re: HP 4550 by moe (8/6/05 8:06 PM) reply + / -
I don't know how many times I've seen that rear paper guide out of place. If you look at the right side of the tray, you'll see 3 white plastic arms. Exec position, the middle arm is out, the other 2 retracted. Letter position, the middle and bottom arms are out, top retracted. If you're still having problems let me know. I'd fly out tomorrow, but the wife's on the dmz's side of the country so I couldn't do it till next week. Where in Hawaii are you and do you have a guest bedroom?

Hi,
I have an HP4550 that is about 5 years old and today I had a problem with the paper from paper tray #2 constantly jamming. I called HP customer service/technical help. The technician there did some testing with me and he says I need a new paper pickup assembly. He said after several years usage that the rollers in
the assembly go bad and the paper gets hung up in the paper path and misfeeds. I bet this unit doesn't have more than 25,000 sheets fed through it. He tells me it will cost about $900.00 for the repair. He says I need part #RF52138000CN. I told him that I think it's a crime for HP to charge that much for the repair of a 5 year old printer that's mostly user serviceable and that we paid about 2000.00 for only 5 short years ago, particularly with such little usage as I believe. He told me that HP has a program to swap and upgrade to a new HP 4600 for my old printer plus $1600.00 including freight with fully filled toner cartrdiges and a new warranty. The paper feeds fine through feeder #1 and is useable this way. Is there any less expensive way of getting this printer repaired so I can use paper tray #2. This unit is low milage, hasn't been abused and it's tandamount to highway robbery to pay $900.00 for this repair. Any ideas?

Re: HP 4550 by moe (8/16/05 6:10 PM) reply + / -
I am shocked speechless. This is one of the worst attempted rip-offs I've ever heard of! If you're in LA, I could sell you a refurbished 4550 for $300. What in heaven's name is a pickup assembly? As far as I know there is no such thing on a 4550. There is a paper pickup roller assy., which is 4 rollers on a plastic shaft. That costs less than $20 and snaps in. The probable cause of your problem is the little roller that sits in the paper tray, less than $10.
This reminds me of the time inCOMPetent USA sent us a customer for a 4000. Uses the same roller as the 4550. $99 for diagnosing it and $500 for the pair of rollers, which take all of 30 seconds to replace!

Re: HP 4550 by dmzcompute (8/16/05 6:21 PM) reply + / -
Moe it could be a combination of the pickup roller and the clutch in the tray. Over time the clutch gets tights and does not let paper feed. I had one today. To test, just remove the pickup roller and the clutch which sits behind it. Put the roller back on even though it will move let to right. See if it draws paper now. If it does the clutch just needs to be separated by hitting the small shaft real hard on a hard surface and remove the center piece and remove about 1/2 of the magnetic filings and reasseble.

Re: Re: HP 4550 by rbcort (8/16/05 6:37 PM) reply + / -
Hi Moe (and dmz),
Thanks for the quick response. So, are you talking about the little gray roller that sits in the middle of the front of the paper tray? (front meaning closest to you as you pull out the tray). Should I somehow disassemble this roller to test it? Please advise and elaborate. Thanks. Rich

Re: Re: Re: HP 4550 by dmzcompute (8/16/05 6:45 PM) reply + / -
Yes. Just lift up the cover on the side of the roller and you can easily remove it. After you take off the roller you will see the black and beige clutch further on the shaft. Remove it and replace the roller and test. If you are not sure go to the reference section of this site and download the service manual.

Re: Re: HP 4550 by rbcort (8/16/05 6:54 PM) reply + / -
Hi Moe, (and dmz)
The place where the paper is getting jammed is inside middle drawer (1). If you open the drawer and remove the transfer belt unit then you can see the paper is jammed and coming out about 3 inches out of a black plastic slot that sits in a metal housing at the bottom of the compartment. This is where the paper jams every time and with the same amount of paper coming out of the slot. I believe this is what the technician referred to as the "paper pickup assembly" and gave the part # as RF52138000CN.
Is this where you think my problem is or is it in the removable paper tray that I think you two had indicated? Please advise. Thanks. Rich

Re: Re: Re: Re: HP 4550 by rbcort (8/16/05 7:12 PM) reply + / -
Hi dmz,(and moe)

Okay, I tried the test and removed the little clutch and then replaced the roller in the tray. When I do this, the paper gets hung up inside the tray and gets caught going to wherever supposed to go on it's journey through the printer. Also,I noticed that each time I tried this (I did it 3 or 4 times) the bottom drawer (2) pushes out a bit and I then pushed it back in. It didn't push out far enough to stop the printer but it did put up a error notice that the tray was out. So when I do the test I get a different jamming problem. Any ideas? I am going to put the clutch back as before and try it again. Thanks for all of your help. Let me know what you think.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: HP 4550 by dmzcompute (8/16/05 7:23 PM) reply + / -
Thats a wierd one. Try pushing the paper tray in while you send the test print and see if that makes a difference.

Re: HP 4550 by Stephen (8/16/05 7:36 PM) reply + / -
Partsurfer says that that part number is a transfer assembly:

http://partsurfer.hp.com

I think it's the mounting piece for the transfer roller.

There are no instructions for changing this item in the manual.

I think the HP Tech just wants to sell a 4600 so he doesn't have to work on the 4550, note since it's actually HP doing the service they would probably really rather sell a printer.

Re: Re: HP 4550 by rbcort (8/16/05 7:50 PM) reply + / -
Hi Stephen,
I checked Partsurfer for the part number and it referred me to a ne part # RY7-5091-000CN for $84.00. Is this something I can replace myself if it's the cause of the problem? BTW, I agree that HP would rather sell a new printer than repair an old one. They make more money by taking my old one in and refurbishing and selling it and then selling me a new one plus it helps their sales figures. Please advise. Thanks. Rich

Hi dmz,
I tried pushing in on the drawer and what I got was a wierd loud buzzing noise for about 10 -15 seconds, like something was being forced and didn't want to go, as the printer was trying to print and then it jammmed again with the same result as previous - the paper was left in the paper tray. Any ideas? Thanks. BTW, I'm about to shutdown for the night here and will check in in the morning. It's 11:00 PM here and I need to leave the office and go home.

Re: HP 4550 by dmzcompute (8/16/05 7:55 PM) reply + / -
I guess it helps to read all the posts and study them. From what I gather now you may have an issue with the itb drawer itself. Since the paper feeds fine from the manual feeder and only jams from tray 2 and the paper is feeding part way out of the tray and just into the itb tray that is the area which may be at fault. You can remove the itb and then remove the tray. Turn the itb drawer over and you will some rollers which grab the paper as it feeds out of the paper tray and thru the slot. You can try to clean those rollers with soap and warm water and let dry. I do not know if that will help. If it does not the complete drawer may need to be replaced and that is very expensive. Best is to use it just from the manual feeder.

Re: HP 4550 by moe (8/17/05 10:10 AM) reply + / -
Let me clarify a couple of things. First off, the techs normal people talk to mostly read from scripts. Other things they do is check the HP site and forums like this one. They have no real formal printer training and have never worked on printers. There are other techs who do know their stuff, but you have to be an HP authorized facility with access numbers to speak to them. I think DMZ has a good suggestion there since those rollers would be the only difference between tray 2 and tray 1 paper paths. If the paper is getting as far as you say, then we can forget about the paper tray being the issue as it has done its job of getting the paper to the transfer belt. When you go to remove the transfer belt drawer, just lift up on the front of it and the guide wheels will come out of the rails. To reinstall it, put the front 2 wheels in the slots, push a little bit and then drop the rear 2 wheels in the slots. If the rollers are shiny, then you can use the rubber roller rejuvenator sold on this site to restore their grip.

Hello, we are trying to find a fan for our 4550 laserjet printer.
The one place we tried on-line was out. Part #1604kl-04w-b59.
The printer has been making a hissing noise for several months and we finally got a fan error message. Our "computer expert"
tried to take out the fan and left one of the toners on top of the printer and now the cartridge won't go in the printer
correctly (I think a part broke off). I'm also having trouble trying to find someone in our area (Louisville, KY) to fix the printer. Is it worth fixing, or should we just try to get a new one????? Thanks

Re: HP 4550 by Wish3096 (8/19/05 6:58 PM) reply + / -
I have a HP 4500 printer that will not print because of the error message "TRAY 2 is opened". All trays look installed correctly. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Re: HP 4550 by dmzcompute (8/19/05 7:14 PM) reply + / -
Frist off the message Tray 2 opened will not stop the printer from printing from the manual feeder in the center drawer which contains the transfer belt. The way the printer gets the signal that the tray is open is from the switches on the left side inside the tray cavity which tell the printer what size paper is in the tray. If all the switches are off it assumes the tray has been opened. My feeling is that you may have a bad paper size pca board or the connection to the board has come off. You can download the service manual from this site to find the exact location of the printed circut board and how to get to it. In the meantime you can print from the manaul feeder as I mentioned above. Also for your information, tray 2 is the small tray which sits below the transfer belt drawer. If you have a tray 3 that would sit below tray 2. If you have a tray 3, then you will also have to open it to make the printer take paper from the manual feeder.

Re: HP 4550 by moe (8/19/05 7:55 PM) reply + / -
Aren't the switches on the right side if you're standing in front of the printer? I thought all HP trays have the switches on the right side.

Hey, I got taken to task for making the same mistake a couple days ago. Being forum moderator has its advantages. They explained it away by saying I was looking at it from the rear of the printer.

Re: HP 4550 by dmzcompute (8/20/05 7:27 AM) reply + / -
Come to think of it Moe, there are a couple of exceptions to that rule. The HP 5000 series have the switches on the left and the big network printers (5si 8000, etc.) have the switches in the rear. I guess the rule could be any laser printer by HP which only prints 8.5 inch wide paper has the switches on the right. But I still can not tell my left from my right or is it my right from my left.

Re: HP 4550 by moe (8/20/05 11:04 AM) reply + / -
Come to think of it, the 4V had them on the left as well and the II/III series had them in the rear. I guess you can't over generalize these things. Which hand did you salute with?

Dear Moe, DMZ and Stephen,

Many thanks to all of you for helping me with the problem I had encountered with the HP4550 that I had posted about last week. With your help, I was able to come into the office today and clear the problem. I took out the middle drawer to clean off the rollers on the underside as suggested and what I found was a small piece of wadded up paper that was stuck in behind one of the two rubber rollers, about 3" across that snub up against a white nylon roller about 1-1/2" across. I removed this piece of paper, cleaned all of the rollers with warm soapy water and dried them, blew out the entire insides and the paper tray with compressed air, wiped everything down and let it dry, put everything back together, put new paper in the tray, let the machine warm up and calibrate, prayed very forcefully, and attempted to print a sheet. Low and behold, the sheet came through from tray #2 and printed. Although, I had to run about 10 sheets through before getting a decent print because I had stirred up so much toner dust while cleaning out the machine. Now it works and prints just fine! I intend to call HP customer service on Monday and give them an earful about wanting to charge me $900.00 for a repair or exchange my machine when I clearly didn't need it. Thanks again to all of you for your quick response and helpful advice. You saved me a bunch of time and $$$ and I appreciate it. Rich

HP 4550 fuser error 50.1 by alittlefischy (8/22/05 9:06 PM) reply+1 + / -
Hi all! I've got this error which makes it impossible to print anything. I just installed a new fuser in June- bought it new off of e-bay so I can't send it back for another... anyway, the description of error states:
A fusing error occurred that is related to low fuser temperature.

Another site tells me it could be related to the power cord or the fuser itself. They tell me to turn off the computer & then back on...if it continues to call customer support. It continues.

I've called HP customer support before, they weren't helpful at all and it took a LOT of time...my warrantee is out so I'll have to pay just to ask questions for answers that may or may not help. Before I go that route and expense, I thought I'd ask you all. Any ideas?

Re: HP 4550 by moe (8/22/05 9:20 PM) reply + / -
2 things I don't trust, refilled toner cartridges and anything bought off of eBay, or as I affectionally call it PirateBay. I guess it's possible you could have a power supply problem, but I've never seen a power supply cause a 50 error on that model. Of course, there's always a first time. I suppose you could pull the fuser and check the resistance across the lamp. If you get no resistance, then the fuser is bad. If you do get about 3 ohms, then I'd say it was the power supply. Power cord, huh? What kind of lame site advised you on that one. Sounds like advice you'd get from the expensive HP customer support know nothings.

Re: Re: HP 4550 by alittlefischy (8/22/05 10:05 PM) reply + / -
Thanks so much for your quick response. Yah, it was an HP customer support site. I'm not sure how to check resistance, I'll probably need to call in a tech. that has something that can measure ohms, right? (I'm pretty computer-illiterate, so I apologize if this is a silly question.)
Again, thanks! Tracy

Re: HP 4550 by moe (8/22/05 11:08 PM) reply + / -
I usually tell people to remove the fuser and take it to a Radio Shack store. They'll check it for free. Fuser comes out real easy, just 2 latches on the bottom and pull. You do have to lower the back door first for access. Unlatch the 2 plastic straps.

My Hp 4550n is printing greyscale...how do i switch it to color? Thanks for your help

Re: HP 4550 by dmzcompute (8/23/05 6:19 PM) reply + / -
We really need more info. If you print a configuration sheet from the menu on the printer does it print in color? Did something just happen to the printer, did you just acquire it, was any work done on it, etc? If the configuration sheet prints in color then your issue is software and I would look at the properties of the print driver to see if there is a tab for color or just black and make sure the right one is checked. If the configuration sheet only comes out in black, then there could be a issue with the gears on the left side, but only if someone just worked or tinkered with them.

Re: HP 4550 by joe1979 (8/23/05 6:28 PM) reply + / -
I just got this printer off e-bay....it was shipped ups...so something could be banged up. I just checked the configuration sheet does print in greyscale only :( what can I do...do I need proffesional help? Thanks!

Re: HP 4550 by dmzcompute (8/23/05 6:54 PM) reply + / -
As I mentioned in my original post someone has probably tinkered with it. Hopefully that is the case and it does not have a major issue. Download the service manual from the reference section on this site. On the left side there of two round gears towards the middle and most likely they have two lines on each. Those lines should be facing each other when the printer is off. If they are oposite each other, that is the most likely problem. Happens when one of the clutches needs to be replaced. If that is not the case it could be a bad dc controller or other items. I doubt the printer was banged up, but rather the seller sold you a defective printer.

Sublimation ink should not make a difference since it should transfer to regular laser paper. Are you sure the cartridges you are using (color ones) are good. Did the printer come with other toners and if so have you tried them just to make sure. I have encountered the black only sympton a few times and it was alwasys related to those two gears I told you about. Of course there is always the possibility that something else is causing the problem. If you are unsure if it is your toner cartridges, then the only other way is to test with regular toner. Hope this helps.

Re: HP 4550 by moe (8/23/05 9:53 PM) reply+2 + / -
I remember working on one that used sublimation ink. It's the only sublimation printer I ever worked on. The darned thing was ghosting. Problem was you couldn't see the ghosting because sublimation ink is gray until you heat it. Have you tried to transfer it with heat?

Re: HP 4550 by joe1979 (8/24/05 2:45 PM) reply + / -
MOE, YOU ARE THE GREATEST! Sublimation ink infact prints in greyscale then once pressed with heat transforms into color. You don't know how happy you have made me. I am in school studying motion graphics at Savannah College of Art and Design. I decided to open my own business.I have spent around $10,000 setting up this print shop...I am out of money and was about to put a gun in my mouth because of all the problems...you may have just saved a life. Thanks again! Your #1 fan.

Re: HP 4550 by moe (8/24/05 3:43 PM) reply + / -
When I first saw sublimation ink, I was fascinated. I couldn't believe that gray scale on plain paper would transfer with such rich colors when heat was applied. That's why when you mentioned it was sublimation, the little bell went off. You're just lucky that I had seen it that one time. I doubt that 1 in 1,000 techs would know that fact. dmz is one of our star forum volunteers. He's fixed some real tough ones, but it appears he's never seen it either. I'm sure he won't forget it. That's what this forum is all about - teaching and learning.
I wish you the best of luck in your new business.

Re: HP 4550 by dmzcompute (8/24/05 5:54 PM) reply + / -
Good one Moe. I myself as you stated have never seen that type of ink so that is why I suggested using the original toner to make sure if it was a printer or toner problem. Your way was much better and you made a very happy user.

Here's some information on sublimation printing, they briefly mention the fact that the toner is black until heated.

Stephen,

It sounds like the same thing has happened to the 4550 I just bought.

Do you think I could try to clean it myself? Where could I find some instructions for doing so?

Thanks,
John

Re: Re: Re: HP 4550 by dmzcompute (8/26/05 8:59 PM) reply + / -
John,

The tray Stephen is talking about sits in the cavity on top of the fuser. Just remove the fuser and there is a black plastic strip in the middle of the tray which you pull on and pull the tray out. Best way to clean the printer is Moe's method. Remove all the consumables, middle tray and paper trays. Remove the top, back and side covers. Take the printer outside and use a air compressor to blow all the toner out. When no more toner comes out the printer is now clean. Good Luck.

Hi all

I have a HP Color LaserJet 4550 which is constantly jamming, either if I feed multiple sheets through the manual front feed or through the paper tray at the bottom. Can anyone give me some tips on how to clean the rollers and inards of one of these printers or will I need a set of new rollers/printer maintenance kit? Many thanks in advance for your advice.

Re: HP 4550 by moe (9/1/05 9:05 AM) reply + / -
It's a big printer. It would help a whole lot if you told us exactly where the leading edge of the paper was stopping. Does it jam on single sheet jobs, or multiple page jobs?

Re: Re: HP 4550 by Anonymous (9/3/05 8:58 AM) reply + / -
Hi Moe, apologies for the delay and thanks for the reply.

It seems to jam around the rear of the printer either feeding single sheets in through the manual feeder at the front of the printer or paper tray at the front. If I put several sheets into the paper tray at the bottom, it jams very quickly. It looks as though the paper is constantly jamming (fanfolding) at the back-end of the printer; I have to unhinge the flap at the rear of the 4550 and then remove the paper and start again.

Any ideas?

Re: HP 4550 by dmzcompute (9/3/05 11:57 AM) reply+1 + / -
Could be the fuser or the output assembly. What hapens if you lower the middle portion of the back door to have the paper come out face up in the back of the printer? Dies it still jam?

Hello again,
Sorry I didn't respond sooner been REAL busy lately. First off I would like to thank everyone that has responded, its greatly appreciated! Ok now for my existing problem...We have been having a printing color quality problem for sometime now. Now I have also learned something new in regards to this printer, we had a tech come over sometime ago, and he SUPPOSEDELY changed the drum for us, however he gave us no receipt and demanded cash. So here's what were are thinking quite possibly happened. He NEVER put in a NEW printing drum, and this might be the reason we are having these problems. Now here's a question, how would you be able to test the printing drum, to see what the life expectancy is? Anyone know? I went ahead and printed up a "Supplies Status Page" and this is what it reads...
HP DRUM KIT 36% (It was supposedly changed less than a yr ago)
HP TRANSFER KIT 85%
HP FUSER KIT 68%

Now a little note on the "Fuser" we had just replaced this maybe a couple of months ago, is it possible that we have used that much of it? I have tried all that I can think of but Im hardly a printer tech :) Hopefully this has given you a general idea of whats happening. Thanks again for responding.

Aloha
Earl

Earl,

The drum kit is what he said he replaced so maybe not. As to the fuser, if it was replaced before you recieved the message on the diaplay to replace it and it was never reset, then it would have to have been reset in service mode. You can download the serivce manual from this site and they give many examples of printing defects and what solutions could help for each. Best advice I can give is to download and see if any of the examples match your problem. The manual will also tell you how to change the fuser percentage.

Dmzcompute,
Ok well this is what Im thinking, we are seriously debating in just going ahaead and bite the perferbial bullet, and just get another printer. So here is my question to you and to anyone else that would have any input. What would be a good printer on the market today that would have the same speed if not better, and preferably a printer with cheaper consumables but still gets the job done effeciently? Off course you know the specs for this printer and Im sure you would know of one that would be even better as far as quantity and quality. So do you have any recommendations, and if so any would be GREATLY appreciated!

Well Thanks again

I have recommendations.

The Color Laserjet 4550 has one drum, bad idea. You want a color lj that has the drums on the toners already - better idea. The cost of one drum is more than just having them in the toners already. I sell these printers all the time and I know the cost differences.

The 4600 hp color laserjet is an upgrade and there are great compatible color toners for it. I sell them and use them.

If you need more help, contact me!

thanks, jdhall

Re: HP 4550 by halljd39 (9/9/05 8:13 PM) reply + / -
Do you print a lot of color? If not you may want to consider just getting a laserjet 4000 or 4050, it would be much cheaper to run. But, I don't know what type of printing you are doing.

Re: HP 4550 by dmzcompute (9/9/05 9:26 PM) reply + / -
My recomendaton for the quanity which you print would be the HP 3550 or 3750. I know the 3550 has a per page cost of 3.1 cents which is very reasonable.

Re: HP 4550 by earlomizo (9/10/05 7:12 PM) reply + / -
Thanks GUYS appreciate the input!

Ok here's another one of those questions...Would you say it would be worth us going ahead and keeping this printer and keep troubleshooting it, Or would you say go ahead and just upgrade to another printer? What do you guys think...you think it would be worth our time to keep it?

Appreciate your feedback

Re: HP 4550 by dmzcompute (9/10/05 7:22 PM) reply + / -
The choice is yours. If you can borrow another drum unit from someone who has your printer or the earlier 4500 that would be the next step. If that solves your issue then you know the issue and just have to see if you want to spend the bucks for a new drum unit. As was mentioned by someone above, your printer uses the carousel method which has really become obsolete. It is slower and more expensive to repair. The new printers use straight line toner technology which speeds the printing and each toner has its own drum so if there is a drum problem it only involves one toner which will cost less then a new drum unit for your printer.

Hey Halljd39,
You know what we have been doing some research on that perticular printer and we are impressed. Now how much would one of these printers run us if we say bought it from you? Another question would be, would you be able to finance? We do live in Hawaii so I bet shipping would be pretty expensive correct? Ok well whejn you get a chance, we look forward in hearing from you.

Thanks Dmzcompute,

Yeah we have been trying to weigh or pro's and con's and it just seems to make since to just go ahead and upgrade to a faster and more effecient printer. I think we might go the 4600 route, that is of course if we can get it at a reasonable price. I thank you again for your responses and recommendations. WISH US LUCK :)

Make sure you get a 4650 and not the 4600. The 4600 was the first of that model and canon had some issues with the engine and some needed a replacment dc controller. The 4650 solved most issues and is a very reliable printer.

The black plasic bit you put your fingers in to is just floating loose and i have a tiny piece of plasic in my hand that i assume used to work the release.

Are we totally stuffed ??

Re: HP 4550 by dmzcompute (1/16/06 6:02 PM) reply + / -
It has been a long time and I may be wrong, but if you open the top drawer which has the drum unit and remove the drum, it should give you access to the top of the middle drawer which you can not open. On each side is a phillips screw. Remove both screws and you should be able to lift the cover off. With the cover off you should then have access to the release bar at the bottom. I seem to remember on customer who did not want to replace the drawer using it with the cover off and it worked.

Moe,

I was following your instructions for testing whether my 4550 had a burned out fuser (I'm getting a 50.1 error on the front panel) but found several connections on the back of the fuser assembly. Surrounding the 8 pin connector are four larger contacts C1 - C4. Then to the right of the connector are two larger copper contacts, L1 and L2.

(I had to put '.'s in this diagram to maintain the layout as the whitespace got eaten so please ignore all the periods)

.....................................L2
...C1...||||...C3............L1
.........1234
.........5678
...C2...||||...C4

When you mean check the resistence of the fuser which pins should be checked? C1 seems to be open for me C2 - C3, C2 - C4 and C3 - C4 all read as 4.7 ohms and L1 - L2 is open.

Is that a bad fuser? Thanks!

Hi guys

I found a used laserjet 4550. With Duplexer and Second paper tray.
Its printed 80,000 pages and comes with a full set of toner cartridges.
The Drum kit is at 54%
Transfer kit at 71%
Fuser Kit at 81%

The last 4 error messages are
13.23 00
54.01 00
54.01 00
13.1 00

These were on the last 4 pages printed!? Does this mean there is something very wrong with this printer. The guy said he just pulled all the trays turned it on/off and it worked!

Hes asking 275$ Canadian

Is this worth it? Is it gonna die on me after a week!?

Hi DMZ,

I, too, have a 4550n with a 50.1 error message. Followed your directions for testing and came up with the following:
Pins 2 to 4: 5.7 ohms
Pins 3 to 2: 3.2 ohms
Pins 4 to 3: 3.2 ohms
1A to 2A: 416 k ohms
1B to 2B: 400 k ohms
3B to 4B: short OK

All seem to be within your given ranges except for Pins 2 to 4, which is a little low. Is this enough to throw a 50.1? I've also tried starting with the rear cover open in an effort to see the lamps, but sadly nothing shows.

Unfortunately, I don't have a spare fuser to test with and I don't want to drop the cash on a new one only to find out it's something else. I'd really appreciate any thoughts or suggestions you might have on clearing the error or, at the least, narrowing the location of the problem.

Thanks very much,
Stace

Stace,

Don't know how none of us managed to answer your post, in my defense September 19th was my birthday...

Generally a value slightly off from the nominal specification will not cause a 50 error.

I'mj not sure which pins you are refering to, I would list it by component you were measuring, refer to the diagram at the following link:

http://www.partsnow.com/service_today/4500.asp

If you are anywhere near Martinsburg WV I could loan you a used fuser to test your printer with.

The other technichian I work with was able to find the fan that we needed to fix our printer on line at:
www.newarkinone.com
part number 69K7662
price including shipping and tax was $ 17.18

The only bad thing was the new fan only had two wires attached they were the red and black and as you know the fan in the hp also has a yellow wire attached. So I had to solder the yellow wire onto the fan. I have put it back together and it appears to be working ok.

PS As I have talked to other people about this thy told me that you cannot skip wiring the yellow wire to the fan because the printer will start throughing fan errors.

I hope this helps you.

1. Basically out - The line go all the way across the page and are very dark, the lines appear up to 4 times on 1 page
2. Brand new - Lines are only in the middle and fade away at the edges. same patern but only once on the page

Re: HP 4550 by Stephen (4/30/07 8:22 AM) reply + / -
Two drums, and two different symptoms...

Then each one has a problem. Unless the ITB is failing, but this does not sound like a bad ITB.

Please print a blank page and let me know what it looks like.

With the new drum are you getting 4 colored lines?

Also plese take the old drum and open the shutter, turn the drum by hand using the gear, one direction will be easier, that will be the right direction to turn it in. examine the glossy surface for obvious defects, what do you see?

Re: HP 4550 by jacinta30 (4/30/07 4:21 PM) reply + / -
I did a test to see what was being put on the transfer belt, and the mirror image was there but the 4 line pattern was also there.

Drum 1 - Nearly dead when I inspect it it has a bit of toner on it but all in all it isnt to bad for a drum that has had a long life.
Drum 2 - New - When I inspect it it has a line from 1 side to the other about 2mm wide that looks like something has rub it a bit.

When I print a blank peice of paper the lines are there and very clear.

I have tried printing a number of blank sheets to see if it slowly goes away and that didnt seem to have any impact.

Re: HP 4550 by Stephen (4/30/07 4:33 PM) reply + / -
The line on drum 2 is what is causing it's problem.
That drum was probably stored for too long and the cleaning blade stuck to the photoconductor, (glossy stuff), then when the drum first turned the photoconductor stuck to the blade and was pulled off.

Drum is in the top drawer. It is most likely the cause of your problems. If you slide the drawer out and grasp the blue handle, it will lift out. If you pull back the drum protective shutter, you will probably see the lines and smudges on the surface of the drum. Are your network cables ok?
Is the status light on the network interfaces active?
Was your printer ever working fine and stopped working now? Or did it never work?

Print out a config page. Press the right side menu button twice, it should say information. Press the item + (right side) twice. You should now be at the config page. Press select. You should get two pages that come out. On the network settings page, it should show you the ip address. Is it handing out a dhcp address or is it manually assigned? If you do not get the second page, then the network card may be bad. I would check and see if you have a link light on the jet direct card and the hub. Is the card a 600, 610, 615, or 620?

I have the same problem with a grey smear (very faint) down the center of every page. HP LaserJet 4500/4550 Drum Kit (C4195A) was replaced and made no difference. Any suggestions?

I am getting blue vertical streak lines in color printed photos. The streaks don't show up in text or other parts of the printed sheets. Does anyone have an idea as to what could be wrong or how to fix it? Any help would be appreciated.

I just picked up a HP 4550N from a friends office that was clearing it out. However the printer is still configured to his domain and ip addresses. How do I get into the configuration to set the printer up with my local network configurations.

Thanks,

Holding down the go button while powering the machine on will perform a cold reset on the machine to set factory default settings and reset the jetdirect.

I have a HP Color LaserJet 4550 printer in my classroom. When my students try to print a picture that has had adjustments made to the contrast and brightness and placed behind text in Word, the printer will not print the picture and only prints the text on the page. If no adjustments are made to the contrast and brightness the picture prints fine including the text. Any ideas on what I can do to correct this problem?
Thanks!

Re: HP 4550 by Rizon (10/28/08 7:08 PM) reply + / -
Make sure they are using the PostScript version of the driver.

If you aren't sure which version it is, go to Printers and Faxes, right click on the printer, and select the Advanced tab. The driver box should say "HP Color LaserJet 4550 PS".

If not, hit new driver and use the PS driver.

Those directions are for XP, if you have Vista it may be different.

I noticed you are a teacher - you may not have enough access privileges to change the drivers - if not, ask a technology person to do it.

Re: HP 4550 by tmpowers (10/29/08 5:51 AM) reply + / -
Thank you so much Rizon! I changed the driver to the PS one and it prints everything fine! Thanks again! :)

Re: HP 4550 by Anonymous (11/4/08 1:16 PM) reply + / -
mechanically everything is working - diagnostics show no problems - only thing is that paper feeds through & nothing prints - even test page - no indication that toners are out (have one that is low that put back in to check indicators, but new one now...) - can it be the fuser even though no error?????

Re: HP 4550 by moe (11/4/08 1:49 PM) reply + / -
All a fuser does is melt toner onto the paper. If there's no toner, it can't melt it. If you send a one page job, does it keep feeding blank pages? If so, it's an ITB issue. The ITB is the large thingy in the middle drawer.

Re: HP 4550 by Anonymous (11/4/08 6:10 PM) reply + / -
THANK YOU - that was the problem.

On the copies of the printer, I have dark smudges and then when it prints, it repeats the print at the bottom of the page. Any suggestions on what this could be? Transfer? Drum? Thanks!

Re: HP 4550 by moe (1/16/09 10:43 AM) reply + / -
Most likely the drum. If it is the drum, you should be able to see it by pulling the shutter back. The drum should be clean. If it isn't, change it.

Re: HP 4550 by KasH (1/16/09 11:21 AM) reply + / -
What do you recommend cleaning the inside with? I'm not a printer tech persay, I am the computer tech in my school, with the added responsibility of this printer. I thought it might have been the transfer assy because of the duplicated printing, so if you think it's the drum, what exactly does the transfer assy do? Thanks for the quick response :)

Re: HP 4550 by Anonymous (1/16/09 1:13 PM) reply + / -
KasH,
The Intermediate transfer belt (ITB) pulls the toner image from the drum to the ITB. This process is repeated four times (one time for each toner cartridge). Once the entire print image is on the ITB, the secondary transfer roller is lifted into position and the toner on the ITB is pulled onto the media. Of course charging, moving these components into/out of position & timing are all involved.
I hope this helps.
Good luck!

HP 4550 - Random Color Dropout by jeedubya2k2 (1/16/09 1:57 PM) reply + / -
Has anyone ever seen a 4550 that loses only one color (or two) at a time? For example, in a multiple run of pages, the first page - a configuration page - is fine, showing all color blocks. The second page of the config. has no cyan, yellow. Third page is supply status with no cyan, yellow. Fourth page is demo and it is perfection. I have seen this on other 4550's in the past and it appears to be completely random. Any ideas?

Re: HP 3550 toner smear problem by texasgal43 (1/25/09 2:32 PM) reply + / -
I own an hp 3550 color laser printer.
When I print multiple copies of a colored graphic image on carstock, my copies begin to have ink smears running from the printed image.

I waste a lot of paper and toner trying to run more blank sheets trying to clean it before I try printing the colored image again.

Does anyone know what is causing this problem on this printer?

Re: HP 4550 by nivek (edited 1/25/09 4:02 PM) reply + / -
I would check your user manual and see if it meets the printers specifications sounds like it doesnt. Ive seen this before where it might work for awhile then it gradually gets worse and its becuase the paper is to thick or to slick and the toner doesnt bond right with the paper. Probably a fuser problem though. I believe on that model you can bump the fuser temp up and it feeds the paper through slower and at a hotter temp. Next step would be to replace the fuser but once again if it doesnt meet the printers specifications then you most likely will be left with the same result. Not sure exactly what the smears look like but also sometimes using heavy cardstock you get a build up of toner on the fuser guides so when it melts it will leave smear marks usually lines on the paper not full image smear.

I keep getting the ERROR E 10 does anyone know what this is? have to unplug from network and power to reset.
Thanks

Re: HP 4550 by moe (1/29/09 5:33 PM) reply + / -
I was confused by the error for awhile until I looked at it cross-eyed and realized it was an EIO error. I would have noticed it quicker if you hadn't inserted the space. That would be a problem with the JetDirect card or a network issue. That's why unplugging the network and resetting it fixes the problem.

I have a 4550 that used to print great. Wife and daughter moved and spilled ink everywhere and had to clean up with compresses air. Now prints well only on the right side of the page and the print on the left side is angling upward about 10-15 degrees and faded. Also, there are vertical faded area from top to the bottom of the page. I have changed the drum and transfer kit but problem persists. Should I change the fuser even though it shows about 98% remaining. Please someone help. Printer also will not print on the left side even though margin has been checked and set at 0.5". Please help!

Re: HP 4550 by nivek (5/9/09 6:36 PM) reply + / -
Probably between moving and air compressing you got toner in the laser scanner assembly. remove the top cover and you should see a black part with a yellow caution label on top. Inside is your laser, mirrors and lens. Using a lint free cloth and Q-tip gently wipe down the parts. Use the Q-tip on the motor mirrors (metal # sided piece). Also in front of the laser unit is a mirror that is angled down into the printer cavity if you blew air up in there you might have knocked one end up. Make sure its properly installed and clean. It should be angled but the piece should be laying level. Google/image, Hp 4500 laser scanner, to see what the part looks like.

Re: Re: HP 4550 by caoa1 (5/10/09 3:21 PM) reply + / -
Thank you so much for your response. Your instructions made a big difference in print quality. I tried printing a calibration page and it made a big difference but two issues remain. First, there is unmatched printing about 1/4 of the way from the right of the page. The 1/4 right side is higher than the left side. Secondly, the texts on the left side close to left the margin are not printed at all. Again, thank you. Any further help will be appreciated.

Re: HP 4550 by moe (5/10/09 4:38 PM) reply + / -
Since the image is caused by a laser that sweeps from one side to the other, the image should be linear from side to side. The only thing that could possibly change that linearity would be if the beam deflection mirror that the laser hit was broken. Then the broken part of the mirror would deflect the laser at a different level on one side of the page. I know that, because I've seen it happen before. That could also account for the second problem as well. That's the mirror Nivek mentions above "Also in front of the laser unit is a mirror that is angled down into the printer cavity"

I recently replaced the fuser unit on our 4550. It still says that the fuser has reached end of life, and it is now saying that the drum kit has reached end of life. Any ideas?

Re: HP 4550 by nivek (6/2/09 5:20 AM) reply + / -
The reset for the fuser is in the menu structure on the control panel. If you scroll the menus you will get to the resets menu. Go into that and you should find the sub menu to reset the life. The drum reset is reset when you replace the drum. There is no way to reset that with out replacing.

This is for the 4550, not the 4650 - you'll probably have better luck searching for similar threads for the 4650, or creating a new thread with your question.

i got problem for hp 4550 printer.
1)i cannot insert tray 1 properly,it seen something jammed inside the printer component.but i seen nothing jammed inside. any solution?

Re: HP 4550 by moe (9/3/09 10:06 PM) reply + / -
Tray 1 is in the middle drawer holding the Image Transfer Belt. Tray 2 is the actual lower cassette tray at the bottom of the printer that holds paper. Which one are you really inquiring about? You give very, very little information to help with a diagnosis.

HP 4550 - Replaced Drum, still get message by mblack (9/9/09 8:04 AM) reply + / -
Replaced the drum on our HP 4550 and we are still getting the message to replace the drum on our printer. It's printing fine. Any ideas?

Re: HP 4550 by moe (9/9/09 9:45 AM) reply + / -
2 things will give that message. 1. There is a chip inside the connector on the drum that determines page count. Could be a bad chip or a remanufactured drum where the chip wasn't replaced. 2. There are 2 windows on the left of the drum that are used to determine if the waste toner bin is full. A light shines through them. Could be that the light pipe is covered with toner and thinks the drum is full because of that.

stop being a wuss and reverse engineer it if you like it so much, thats what you have to do if you like a printer,no one is going to save you,no one but you can fix it,so get some tools out and start taking it apart. teck guys are too expensive, you have to be your own teck guy, Thats what I had to do with my hp 1120's and 1220's,I have a bj 230 and a 4550 but haven't taken either one apart to clean, the 1120 and 1220 are the ones I use.

Hi,
I am getting a 50.7 Fuser Error on a 4550n that was recently given to me. I do not have access to another fuser so I was wondering how to check the fuser. It had alot of ink inside and I used a top quality paint brush and vaccum to clean it out. Does this cause problems??
Thanks,

Getting a replace transfer kit error. Replaced it with a brand new one still get the same error. Alos took the drawer and transfer kit and put it in anotehr 4550n and it works. Connectors in the printer looks good. Are there sensors or something I could check.

Did you try the drawer and kit from the other printer in the problem printer? You might have a scrap of paper in the connector. They can be real hard to see. Get a flashlight and check carefully.
