are there different grades of toner

I am thinking about refilling my cartridges. Do different printers/cartridges (HPLJ4100,HPLJ2100,HPLJ2420,HPLJ4+)use different grades of toner, or can I buy one type in bulk. Also, in your experience, are the savings worth the hassle.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, all different. They all require different methods of disassembling. Also, just refilling it is really a bad way to go. For instance in the 4+, the wiper blade won't go another cycle. Most times you can get 2 cycles out of a drum, but you're pushing it if you go past that.

Contrary to popular belief, all toner is not the same. Toner is specially formulated to only work on the machine it was designed for.

Thanks for the quick replies moe & philly. Would you know / clarify if the HP cartridges would work with the same bulk toner, or as philly stated, each printer / cartridge requires specific toner type.

I forgot to ask if each re-filled cartridge requires a chip to make it work, or is there a way to get around that. Thanks!!

We both told you that you can't use bulk toner, whatever that is. The 4100 and the 2420 use chips. You can buy them at the same place you buy the toner. You really shouldn't be refilling cartridges if you don't know what you're doing. It's not as easy as most people think it is. I've seen too many really bad refillers out there.

That wasn't Mr. Bean, that was our forum troll. The one who swore that he was leaving the forum forever. All his posts get disappeared. It's not like he's fooling anyone.

There are companies (in the uk) that will sell toner for a specific printer, and they make kits and instructions on how to do it.
What have you got to lose - you never know all the snags unless you try, if you don't try you don't succeed - give it a shot!!!
