 | HP2100 Paper Tray Issue by Ricardo M. (11/13/09 3:59 PM) reply | + / - | Hello, My HP LJ2100 only prints if the paper is in Tray1. If I close the tray and put paper in tray2, the Attention light turns amber and stays solid. It does not print from tray2. I have tried cold reset and nothing. Checked the configurations via IP address and nothing. Connected the printer to a PC and the printer settings are normal. Tray1 is not the default. Everything is set to auto. I don't know how else the change the settings so the the printer prints from tray2 and not from tray1.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

 | Re: Re: HP2100 Paper Tray Issue by Anonymous (11/17/09 1:11 PM) reply | + / - | Thank you for your suggestion dmzcompute. According to the config page, under the settings category, TRAY1 MODE = NORMAL TRAY2 MODE = NORMAL
This is the only information on the config. page about tray1 or tray2. What next?
Thank you again.

Thanks.

COPIES = 1 PAPER = LETTER WIDE A4 = NO COURIER = REGULAR ORIENTATION = P (PORTRAIT) FORM = 60 LINES MANUAL FEED = OFF RET = ON

 | Re: HP2100 Paper Tray Issue by moe (11/17/09 5:34 PM) reply | + / - | I read your post again. The attention light being on means that the printer doesn't see any paper in the tray. That would be why it's printing from tray 1 instead. To the right of the pickup roller, you will see a black plastic piece dangling down. This is the paper sensor flag. The way it works is it normally is in the up position. The paper tray pushes the paper up to the pickup roller. When the last sheet is fed, the arm drops into a slot in the tray and interrupts an optical sensor triggering that light. I've seen some get dislodged. Take your finger and push up on the arm and it should go up about 1/2 an inch and drop down when you let go. There shouldn't be any resistance. If you measure it, the arm should be exactly 1 1/4" from the right side of the white spacer to the right of the pickup roller. If that distance doesn't agree, then it's out of place or if it doesn't move freely, then it's also out of place.

 | Re: Re: HP2100 Paper Tray Issue by Anonymous (11/18/09 9:46 AM) reply | + / - | Thank you moe. The problem is with the black plastic piece dangling down as you describe. I took the paper tray out, pushed the sensor flag back up per your directions and as soon as pushed it up and kept it there the indicator light turned off and the Ready green light turned ON. However, looks like the plastic piece is not properly in place because I have to fill the whole tray with paper in order for it to know that there is paper and print. There are no problems with 3/4 of the way full, but as soon as the tray is half empty or even lower, the sensor thinks there is no more paper in the tray. So the stack of paper needs to be big enough to keep the dangling flag up in order for it to work. After all that said, is there a way to fix the sensor flag????
Thank you for your help. Ricardo M.

 | Re: HP2100 Paper Tray Issue by moe (11/18/09 9:52 AM) reply | + / - | You would have to remove the pickup roller to get it on right. The pickup roller has a rotating plastic latch on each side. Then you slide them to the sides to get them out of the way and slide the roller to the right and lift it out. Then you'll have to figure out how that sensor arm is supposed to sit. The sensor is visible above it and it has to smoothly rotate in and out of the opening in the sensor in order to block it.

 | Re: HP2100 Paper Tray Issue by dmzcompute (11/18/09 4:18 PM) reply | + / - | It may not be the sensor but the release of the paper tray to raise the bottom when the tray is inserted. There should be two clips one on each side that when pressed down with the metal piece of the tray at the bottom, releases it so the paper rises. You could have an issue where those clips are not being activated so the tray does not rise.

 | Re: HP2100 Paper Tray Issue by Ricardo M. (11/20/09 9:45 AM) reply | + / - | Thank you dmzcompute. Your suggestion was right on point. I did not pay attention to the release clips on the side of the tray. One of the clips is broken, half of it is missing, that is why the paper was not being raised. Finally!!! the problem has been found, with your help and moe's. I will have to order a whole paper tray. I was quoted one for $45.00.
Thank you both again for your help. I have never relied on forums for help but this was a great experience for me.
Good day. Ricardo M.
