HP 8550DN formatter replacement

HP 8550DN formatter replacement by pl720 (11/6/09 5:35 PM) reply + / -
Hi,

We have a HP 8550DN in use. The carousel system makes them notoriously slow, but in our daily use most of the print time (around 80%) is in fact just due to data processing. We mostly print colour A3 using postscript. I'm interested to know whether it's possible to swap the 8550DN formatter board with one from a 8550GN ?

According to the HP specifications, the GN uses a 300Mhz processor versus the 200Mhz one on the DN. Even if we could cut the data processing time down by just 20 to 25% it would be useful.

A second thought is whether the hard drive could be upgraded to a faster one (but not larger capacity) - if so, which models are compatible ?

Thanks in advance !

Formatter should work in both units as the engine is the same. As to the hard drive I really have no idea and also no idea if it would improve performance. One thing is to make sure to max out the memory and use a network connection which provides for faster data processing.

Thanks for your thoughts. HP curiously advises not to increase memory beyond 128Mb (see link below). It seems to be an awkward (poor?) design for the optimal memory to be this low.

The printer is already on a network.
