HP 4000 repeat fuser fixing film sleeve problem

HP 4000 repeat fuser fixing film sleeve problem by Ray Kremer (11/4/09 9:02 AM) reply + / -
We bought a second HP 4000 last year or so, unbelievably we found one on eBay that was still unopened after all these years, with a LAN card and some toner cartridges included to boot. Twice now it has shredded the fuser fixing film sleeve, over on the side towards the gears. I note that on our older HP 4000 that we've had for over 10 years, even though I've had to replace the fuser due to the heating element dying, it's never destroyed its film sleeve.

I could replace the sleeve several more times for the price it will take to replace the entire fuser unit, but honestly either way it seems like a waste. I can find no obvious spurs or sharp points that would be causing this. Any advise?

What kind of lubricant are you using? That could have some effect on it. Also there are different grades of fixing films. I tried some once that shredded almost immediately during testing.

The first one was the OEM, of course. Though I suppose age may have contributed to the problem? It was sitting in a box unused for 10 years.

The second one I bought from this fellow on eBay:

and used the grease he sent with the sleeve. Who knows, maybe I didn't put enough of it on. This was June, so the second one lasted about five months.

Yeah, looking at that page I'm guessing you got cheap Chinese sleeves and you definitely didn't get the OEM Uniflor grease. They say you get what you paid for.
