HP 2550L q3709a (Paper Tray 2) Fail by granvillea (11/3/09 12:43 PM) reply + / -
I have owned a HP 2550L Color LaserJet Printer for a number of years and have owned HP Printers since the original LaserJet (and at one time was an authorized dealer before I sold out of the computer store business). I had always loved HPs printers but had been getting more and more frustrated regarding HPs growing greed regarding consumables (Toner and Drums) policies and what I perceived as a constant of making the Printers less and less durable and more and more a throw away product.

I was particularly disappointed in the Off on Toner Out setting on the 2550L and had searched many sites over the years for a work around as my cartridges were always reporting out when they were still more than 1/2 full of Toner and were still printing perfectly. Likewise the Drum replacement was/is forced long before the drum generally show any signs of wear. Until I found your site and your solution to the problem. It is not what should be required (HP should have provided a menu choice for this so you could turn this "FEATURE" off) but it is a viable workaround and I will now be able to reuse the stack of half full cartridges I have stored at my office (I believe I have 3 of each color and 2 Imaging Drums so it should be a long time before I need to buy a toner cartridge or drum). For this I thank you sincerely and in particular your user dmzcompute! Thank you very much.

I have an additional problem with this printer and hope you have a solution for this as well. I purchased the q3709a 250 sheet Tray 2 Paper Tray several years after I bought my printer and I loved it. But, after less than 6 months, it simply stopped working. HP Telephone Support (After charging me $37.50 before they would even answer the question) told me I had to carry my printer in to a service center to fix it (which they could have told me either in response to my email inquiry or without charging me $37.50 for "Support" (some support) it took them less than 30 seconds to answer my question after I paid them). After inquiring with several authorized service centers, I decided that it would cost me more than a new printer to get it fixed and so have been back to the standard paper tray (flimsy fold out tray but that is another issue) since then. No warranty per HP on the accessory, even though it was almost brand new when it broke - warranty period is determined by the Printer purchase date not the accessory purchase date (again another story).

In any case between the brand new non-working paper tray and the printer stopping working arbitrarily when its page counter tells it the toner is gone (and since it counts each time it cycles as a page for its count I have yet to have used more than half of any cartridge and much less than that of the color cartridges) With the outrageous price for consumables (which basically make it almost less expensive to buy a new printer then to replace all the cartridges) I had become extremely disillusioned with HP a company I once greatly admired and I hated the situation.

Your forum by resolving my biggest issue makes me somewhat less disappointed in HP (And I have always used their OEM cartridges and used to always recommend them, but their recent outrageous greed has certainly stopped that). I had decided no matter how much I used to like HP, I would choose another brand the next time I bought a Printer and I currently own a 2550L, a 1500L, a high end HP Ink Jet Photo Printer, and several HP DeskJets, and have owned dozens of HP laserjets over the years.

If you are able to also help me get my q3709a paper tray 2 to work again, I might even change my mind. Again to reiterate the problem - I purchased a Tray 2 accessory for my HP 2550L Color LaserJet (model q3709a) which I loved for a few weeks before it simply quit working entirely. It simply quit doing anything one day, for no reason I could figure out. As I recall I was doing nothing special when it quit, it had simply been working and then suddenly wasn't working at all anymore. I would really like to get it working again if possible but have no idea what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Granville Alley (Former very satisfied HP customer)
