 | HP m1522nf freezes by Cap7 (8/23/09 2:44 PM) reply | + / - | My HP m1522nf freezes from time to time and seems to be happening more frequently. I thought it was an HP ToolboxFx issue at first but it seems to be the hardware. From what I have recently read, I think it may be a bad formatter board issue that looks to be a common problem. I am a couple of weeks out of warranty and was wondering if anyone knows if there is a service note for the board before I hunt down and buy a part. Thanks.

I'm having a similar problem. But it is worse now, I tried to flash the firmware but the printer locked up partway through the flash so now the firmware is corrupt. Now if I plug the printer into a Windows PC's USB port to reflash it, the PC reboots!
And again, I'm out of warranty. :(

In fact, anytime I have a problem with a board in the future, first thing I'm doing is baking it. There isn't a thing to lose since the board isn't any good anyway.

Hello!
I know how to solve this problem.
First you must turn your printer on and if it shows "Firmware Corrupt Ready 2 Download", that's what we need.
If LCD screen is blank, then clear all tasks for this printer and delete its driver from "Printers and Faxes". Now turn it off and on again. Do it untill "Firmware Corrupt Ready 2 Download" shows.
------------------------------------------
When we see "Firmware Corrupt Ready 2 Download" we should do as follows:
1) TURN PRINTER'S POWER OFF (USB should stay connected)
2) Delete installed driver (if exists)
3) Manually install driver for your printer (When choosing port, use one of "Virtual Printer Ports for USB" which is your printer connected to)
4) Run firmware update program from HP Support web page (PRINTER IS OFF)
5) In firmware update program's window choose your printer (manually installed) and press "Send Firmware" button
6) Wait for firmware to be completely sent to your printer's task window
7) TURN YOUR PRINTER ON
8) First you will see "Firmware Corrupt Ready 2 Download" message. If there is no such message, turn off and on again untill it shows. Then message will change to "Downloading...", "Erasing..." and "Programming..."
9) When all this operations end, printer'll ask you to turn it off and on.
That's all. No need to contact HP Support or buy any parts.
P.S. While "Downloading...", "Erasing..." or "Programming...", printer may hang. It's not fatal. Just repeat all operations again. To prevent hangs use quality USB cable when updating firmware.
P.P.S. Sorry for bad english. I'm russian...

dmzcompute: I'll try the oven trick one night this week, thanks.
scapi5432: Thanks for that, I'd already tried following those instructions for reflashing my m1522nf, but when I turn the printer on attached to the USB port my Windows PC instantly reboots.
Cheers!

 | Re: HP m1522nf freezes by puck (10/9/09 8:31 PM) reply | + / - | Hi,
I've just removed a circuit board from my HP m1552nf and before I bake it I thought I'd better check if I have the formatter board. I have the circuit board that is immediately behind the left hand side plastic cover. It has a code CC368-80001 REVA on it.
A quick Google search indicates that this is probably the formatter board, but just incase...
Cheers!

 | Re: HP m1522nf freezes by puck (10/9/09 10:14 PM) reply | + / - | Cool, I have the right one then.
Will the plastic connectors be okay? I assume so, since this'll be how they mount them in the first place.

 | Re: HP m1522nf freezes by puck (10/10/09 12:53 AM) reply | + / - | Baked. I won't have a chance to try it out till tomorrow. The only downer is that the backup battery on the board popped. I would have removed it before baking but it was crimped on.
Oh well, easy enough to replace.

 | Re: HP m1522nf freezes by puck (10/16/09 2:31 AM) reply | + / - | I've installed the board back in the printer, and managed to use a different computer to re-flash the firmware.
The printer seems to be working perfectly now. The only remaining job is to solder in a new backup battery.
Thanks for the tips!

 | Re: HP m1522nf freezes by Cap7 (10/16/09 6:42 AM) reply | + / - | Thanks for all the responses. My issue got resolved - this isn't a fix but here is the story in case by some lucky circumstance anyone else can benefit from it.
When I got the printer I noticed that it printed a little crooked and called support to see if there was a way I could adjust it. There wasn't. They did not have any inventory to send out a replacement they gave me a case number said they would followup and that I could also. They also asked if I wanted to purchase an extended warranty. I asked why would I want to purchase a warranty when it is under warranty now and you can't send me a replacement now?
Weeks went by, they would call over and over me asking if I wanted to buy a warranty and would tell me that they still did not have replacments to send. I did contact a repair shop that was not close to me and they could not get to fixing my printer for over a week which was not good for me trying to start a new business. I just sucked it up for a while.
After about 10 months the printer would freeze randomly but not often, I figured it was just a windows issue or something and would restart.
I always planned to by an extended warranty but only after they could live up to the deal. As the year went by I thought I would get a reminder as I always have for the many other HP products I own - since the 1522 is a business product they don't send reminders. It fell about 10 days out of warranty and the freezes got worse, then I learned the issue was the formatter board.
Tried to buy a warranty but they don't have plans for this product after the one year as they do on other products. I called customer support and explained how I always planned to buy a warranty, thought I would be reminded, and discussed the original case (not the formatter board). Since they never fixed the original issue they extended my warranty two months and sent out a replacement - of course the replacement was bad, got another replacement, then hours and hours with tech support with software issues.
Finally after it all worked, the two free months opened the window for me to buy two more years of warranty. Sorry for the long story but if this opens any options up for any of you it is my way of saying thanks.

 | Re: Re: HP m1522nf freezes by macguru (11/27/09 4:29 PM) reply | + / - | My M1522nf printer died (i.e. LCD blank on power-up, no read out, only a brief spin up of the fuser/drum) about a week ago and is 3 months out of warranty. Unit worked well copying, scanning and printing up until a month ago. The first sign of trouble began with the scanner (error 5) stepper motor locking up. Printer was a paper weight until yesterday.
With nothing to lose, I desoldered the battery, baked the formatter board (325-350, 7-8 mins) after Thanksgiving dinner. Cooled the board for 30 mins, resoldered the battery and the printer is working again (w/ error 5 problem). Removed and found a scanner stepper motor replacement online for ~ $30. I hope this will fix the error 5 problem.
HP has really lowered their QA standards with these low cost printers and the company's answer (tech support response) is to purchase another one. I can't say if any other comparable brands are better or worst however I will would lean toward the same if not worse. How much to do think it would have cost HP to perform this simple annealing step before assembling the formatter into these systems?

 | Re: Re: Re: HP m1522nf freezes by Kyp (12/11/09 1:45 AM) reply | + / - | I'm having a freezing issue only, and I've heard that HP has just released a "service note" for the formatter board which means a local repair shop should be able to fix it for free outside the warranty. So I'm going to try that first, but if not I'm considering the baking method.
Also, after baking is there any way to tell that it had been baked?

seems to be working for now.

 | Re: HP m1522nf freezes by wcp_bill (1/23/10 8:09 PM) reply | + / - | i just observed the blank LCD. this machine was always freezing from the time I purchased it but I though maybe it was a network problem. I was wrong after reading this forum. I tried to upgrade the firmware but it freezes during the programming with >>. Power cycle and it went to Hewlett-Packard with >>.what a waste of money on this very expensive printer. as per my understanding, although the unit is made in china, it passed hp quality control thus they are being marketed and serviced by hp. but with this type of problem, hp has failed us by providing only a year warranty. hp should extend the warranty to 3 years just like what microsoft did for xbox 360 (offered replacement for a particular problem). My first hp1300 was purchased in 2004 and still working thus I purchased a color laserjet and the latest m1522nf....any suggestion in the community to resurrect this 1522?

 | Re: HP m1522nf freezes by dmzcompute (1/24/10 3:16 AM) reply | + / - | HP I believe has extended the warranty on these for formatter issues but I think it is only for 1 year. Best for you to contact hp customer care or call a local authorized service provider to verify if your printer is included.
